Chapter 44

Chapter 44. Oh, My Bodhisattva

It was an excellent opportunity.

And if I stepped in as an emergency replacement, Seo Hoe-dong might owe me even more goodwill.

His full support was always sweet.

The only problem was how little time we had.

By the time I'd spoken with Seo Hoe-dong, the members had already woken up before dawn and even gone to a salon they usually didn't use.

And 〈The Sixth Sense〉 was filming the very next morning.

We were going to have to tighten the schedule again.

Part of me wondered whether it would've been better to simply let the broadcasting station handle their makeup like usual.

Still, if we had an all-time great song, choreography, and stage, then the members' condition also needed to be all-time great.

We'd simply done our best.

The members didn't seem upset about it.

Of course, the very first thing I did after confirming the schedule with Seo Hoe-dong was call Serin and order her to sleep immediately.

The sudden schedule threw not only me and the members into chaos, but Dae-hun too.

"Still, it's lucky the members live together. If they all lived separately, sudden schedules like this would be impossible."

Dae-hun said while urgently organizing things from early morning.

Hearing that made me unexpectedly sad.

As idols gain years of experience and become more popular, they grow capable of managing their own schedules.

Eventually, the company's role becomes little more than telling them where and when to go.

That was how they prepared for independence.

They couldn't remain at our company forever.

Would our members eventually become like that too?

Probably.

That was my goal.

If Universe could perfectly support every aspect of their entertainment careers, maybe they could stay forever.

But I'd never heard of an agency capable of doing that.

Every company had strengths and weaknesses depending on the field.

"Sudden schedules only happen because of where we are now. Once they're top tier, we won't need to cling desperately to every little appearance."

"That's true."

"Anyway, I'm leaving. Hold down the company."

I forced the unnecessary thoughts out of my head.

Then I gathered the members waiting in front of the parking lot and headed to the station.

The moment we arrived at the 〈The Sixth Sense〉 set, the CP recognized me from a distance and hurried over looking relieved.

"Ah, you really came. I'm getting saved by PD Seo Hoe-dong again... No, wait. You're Manager Do Jun-hyeok, right? I know this sudden schedule must've been difficult. Thank you so much for coming."

"It's a popular program. Even if you'd told us a few minutes before filming, we'd still come."

Apparently, the celebrity originally booked for the episode had been called in for police questioning.

The production team had spent almost the entire previous day devastated.

Just like PD Jo Gwan-seok from 〈Live Singing Contest〉.

"Only one is fake! Find the real one hidden among the real! The shocking twist quiz show... The Sixth~ Sense~!"

After brief greetings with the directors, filming began almost like routine work.

Yoo Jun-seok and the regular panelists sat together on set and delivered the opening.

After some conversation, Yoo Jun-seok proudly introduced Blue Moon.

The members entered and sat in the four empty chairs.

"Now we'll begin meeting today's guests. Blue Moon, are you ready?"

"Yes!"

The members answered in unison.

Yoo Jun-seok introduced the first guest.

"Our first guest is Master Kim Seong-wan, a fortune scholar who reads your fate through the foods you like!"

The format of 〈The Sixth Sense〉 was roughly like this.

Three people with unusual professions appeared every week and introduced themselves.

They answered questions from the guests.

One of those three professionals was fake.

The guests had to figure out who.

At Yoo Jun-seok's introduction, the cylindrical screen behind the set opened and revealed the fortune scholar.

The panelists and members applauded.

The scholar gave a brief introduction.

He said he researched saju, the traditional Four Pillars of Destiny, and sometimes read people's fortunes using both birth information and food.

"Could you read my fortune?"

Serin raised her hand.

Everyone's attention turned toward the scholar.

The instant Serin finished asking, he took out paper and a pen.

"Do you know what time you were born? Solar calendar, correct? What food do you like?"

He asked surprisingly detailed questions while rapidly writing things down.

"Imsul day pillar. Your middle years are fortunate, and you have several signs connected to official authority, but government work doesn't seem to suit you. Your energy is strong. If you take the wrong path, you could easily become a troublesome person."

"Oh..."

"You're naturally curious and imaginative. So you probably had a princess complex as a child, but because your year pillar is blocked, it's unlikely those desires were properly satisfied."

Serin looked impressed.

Apparently, he'd hit something.

As far as I knew, Serin had grown up poor.

Whether it was a princess complex or simple greed for food, I doubted many of her childhood desires had been fulfilled.

"I-It feels real."

After Kim Seong-wan came Sangcheon Doryeong from a philosophy house.

The last guest was Janggun Bodhisattva, a male shaman from Palbong Shrine.

Aran took responsibility for questioning the shaman.

"Bodhisattva! We just released a new song. Do you think it'll do well?"

"People need to know their place. This one's already doomed."

I had no idea what basis he had for saying that.

Still, the entire set suddenly became awkward.

"Even though we're already inside the top eighty on the chart?"

Aran asked again.

The shaman shook his head.

What did he mean doomed?

Do you know how much we'd poured into this song?

Fake.

He was definitely the fake.

"Then when will things start going well for us?"

Serin asked.

"That Doctor Kim or whatever his name was said someone's natural energy was blocked, right? Every one of you is blocked. How could anything go well?"

"Gasp..."

"Still, you recently met a benefactor. The situation isn't something an ordinary person could solve, though."

Maybe... he wasn't fake?

Every member turned to look at me.

Strong natural energy, but blocked.

That interpretation was disturbingly accurate too.

"My kindergarten teachers used to call me Aran Bodhisattva. Want me to read your fortune?"

"Oh? Aran has spiritual power too?"

"Of course."

Yoo Jun-seok instantly brightened.

Aran walked into the center of the set, closed her eyes, shook her body, and began muttering.

I didn't know where she'd learned this from, but she looked surprisingly similar to shamans in movies.

"Let's see~ Let's see, let's see, let's see! I can see it... I can see it... I can hear it, I can hear it~ Today's fortune!"

As Aran danced wildly with empty hands, Yoo Jun-seok happily encouraged the panelists to laugh.

Then suddenly...

As if the spirit had entered her, Aran's eyes snapped open.

The entire set went quiet.

"Soon, you'll be eating the government's rice."

"Oh. Is there a reason? The phrase 'government work' came up earlier, so it sounds like you're just reusing it."

"No! I vaguely saw it."

Youngchae, sitting in her chair, raised a thumb toward Aran.

Honestly, the I can see it, I can see it shaman dance alone had already completed Aran's mission for the day.

It would've been even better if Janggun Bodhisattva actually turned out to be a civil servant.

Then people might start saying Aran Bodhisattva was genuinely powerful.

But that did not, in fact, happen.

Nothing in life was ever that easy.

The members were furious at Janggun Bodhisattva's curse that their new song would fail.

So they all voted for Number 3 out of personal resentment.

The correct answer was Number 2.

The moment the answer was revealed, the gold pig about the size of a canned coffee that had been placed in the center of the set slowly descended beneath the floor.

After filming, Yoo Jun-seok briefly visited the waiting room.

"Hahaha. Everyone worked really hard. I heard the schedule was so sudden you didn't even receive the script beforehand. I think it went extremely well. Especially Aran!"

"Hehe. It's nothing, Senior Yoo Jun-seok. I merely did what had to be done."

The expression didn't quite fit the situation.

Still, Yoo Jun-seok apparently liked it.

He gave Aran a thumbs-up.

"You're Manager Do Jun-hyeok, right? It's been a long time."

"Huh? You remember me?"

After chatting with the members, Yoo Jun-seok approached me and lowered his voice.

"Of course. I think I saw you two or three times when we filmed 〈Walking Boy〉 years ago. You were more handsome than most celebrities, so I remembered you. We even talked briefly."

He was talking about an old KBC pilot show that no longer existed.

Right.

Victory had appeared there for about a month.

Naturally, I remembered it too.

I simply assumed it had been such a minor schedule for Yoo Jun-seok that he'd forgotten.

Apparently, he was simply very good at remembering faces.

"Your members are really talented. And obviously failing the quiz has nothing to do with being good or bad at variety shows. Honestly, if they'd not voted for Janggun Bodhisattva, it would've been less funny. The whole episode built up that little rivalry with him because of the new-song fortune, right?"

"Hahaha. Yes, that's true."

Yoo Jun-seok joked that even if they'd won the golden pig, converting it to cash after taxes wouldn't amount to much.

Listening to him, I realized the chemistry with Janggun Bodhisattva really had been entertaining.

He wasn't even the fake guest.

And since he'd appeared on this program, we'd probably see him on television occasionally in the future.

If Aran's shaman dance got mentioned every time, that would be worth more than ten roasted golden pigs.

Bzzzt.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

Yoo Jun-seok must've heard it because he immediately took the hint.

"Anyway, you all worked really hard today. If we get another opportunity, I'll contact you. Let's meet again."

"Yes."

He was clearly giving me space to answer the message.

I almost let him leave.

Then I thought that since we'd reconnected, I should establish at least a small personal connection with national MC Yoo Jun-seok.

"Here's my business card. When I say, 'Let's have tea sometime,' I'm the kind of person who genuinely goes to a tea shop. So I'll be seriously waiting for your call."

"Really? Hahaha. Ah~ I picked the wrong person to talk to."

Yoo Jun-seok laughed and accepted my card.

He even showed me that he was saving my number in his phone.

Once I was alone, I checked the message.

[Title: 1/7]

[Recorded: 2022.12.08. 10:48]

Spam.

This was the first one since receiving the upgrade notice.

There was no introductory question asking whether I wanted to see the future.

The image had simply arrived.

Just as the upgrade notice promised, it was a GIF.

And not some low-quality GIF.

The motion was so smooth and the image so sharp that it almost looked like HD video.

I briefly wondered whether my phone screen had always been this good.

I examined it immediately.

First, I recognized the location.

The parking lot in front of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, Seongnam Branch.

I'd visited it exactly once before.

On the left side of the GIF stood a group of people in suits.

On the right was someone who appeared to be a suspect surrounded by numerous reporters.

I zoomed in on the suited group first.

The face of the man standing in the center, watching the reporters, immediately caught my eye.

I knew him.

Prosecutor Yoon Jin-seo of the Seongnam Branch Criminal Division 3.

The man who'd personally sent Won-woo to prison during the Club Area incident.

When I was still under suspicion, I'd visited for questioning and spoken with him once.

He was one stubborn bastard.

Before he'd even begun investigating properly, he'd already decided in his head that I was some low-level drug and sex-crime offender.

I hated looking at his face.

I dragged the image toward the reporters.

The man standing beneath their spotlight as the suspect also looked familiar.

Another face I knew?

I zoomed in as far as possible.

The image quality was incredible.

It remained sharp without breaking apart.

Then I recognized him.

And at the same time, I understood exactly why this GIF had been sent to me.

It was the man who had been on the set with us only moments earlier.

Janggun Bodhisattva.
