Chapter 49. Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Good at Naming Things

“Is that demonic energy inside the cylinder? He doesn’t look like a demon worshipper.”

A tiny amount of demonic energy, too faint for Sia to notice, had leaked from the gas cylinder the man was carrying.

Michael initially assumed the man was a demon worshipper and followed him.

However, he could sense no special energy from the man himself.

“I’ll find out once I go down.”

Step, step.

Resting the sheath against his shoulder, Michael followed the demonic energy down the stairs.

“Here?”

The demonic energy abruptly disappeared.

There were no hallways or other passages.

Only a locked door.

That meant the man must have gone through it.

“Would you look at this?”

No light leaked through the gap beneath the door.

Michael placed an ear against it.

He heard nothing.

He lightly tapped the door.

There was no response.

Someone had clearly entered, yet everything inside was unnaturally silent.

Considering the connection to demonic energy, there was only one answer.

“A barrier. A very cheap one too.”

A barrier that only blocked noise and demonic energy without even providing proper security was clearly low grade.

Now that Michael understood what it was, there was no need to hesitate.

He drew out his aura.

White Flame ignited around his right arm.

“Let’s see what kind of faces are hiding inside. ignícŭlus [Igniculus].”

* * *

FLASH!

Bright lighting illuminated the entire sealed underground chamber, making it difficult to believe they were underground.

Around thirty people were gathered together.

Among them, a sharply dressed man climbed onto a small platform while surrounded by bodyguards.

“Ah! Everyone, fellow demons! Thank you for answering my call. My name is Park Sangtae, a loyal worshipper of our master.”

Clap, clap!

Applause followed Sangtae’s introduction.

At first glance, it might have looked like a strange cult gathering.

In reality, calling it a demon den would have been more accurate.

They had already placed a barrier around the room so demonic energy would not leak outside.

“For the sake of our master, several of our people have installed distributors filled with demonic energy throughout the Korean department store!”

“Hehehehe.”

“So it’s finally beginning? Kuhahaha.”

According to Sangtae, demonic energy would soon be released throughout the department store, throwing everything into chaos.

The demons grinned sinisterly while imagining the destruction they would cause afterward.

Unlike the excited demons, Sangtae frowned slightly.

Did something go wrong?

The demons installing the distributors were supposed to return after finishing their work.

Their seats were still empty.

Sangtae could not tell everyone that.

So he quickly attracted their attention with another topic.

“Ah, that reminds me. Come in!”

Clunk!

At his signal, the man carrying the gas cylinder opened the door and climbed onto the platform.

“And this gentleman here! He delivered another cylinder because he wishes to join us. Let us greet him with warm applause while we wait for the signal…!”

BOOOOM!

“AAAAAGH!”

A stream of White Flame smashed through the door and swept across the platform.

Sangtae, the demon worshipper, and the man carrying the gas cylinder were unharmed.

Instead, the bodyguards beside them screamed once and turned into ash.

Apparently, they had been demons.

“No wonder there were way more demons than usual today. You even put up a barrier and hid together like a swarm of insects.”

Michael looked around the chamber.

Other than the two humans standing on the platform, everyone had already completed demonization.

Shing.

Michael drew his new sword and pointed it at the demons.

When he poured aura into the weapon, a faint aura flowed across the blade.

“All right. I don’t know what plan you prepared for your precious master, but it failed. Throw everything away.”

The demons were confused by Michael’s sudden attack.

However, after seeing their bodyguards turned to ash and feeling the aura coming from Michael, they immediately recognized him as an enemy.

“Who brought him here?!”

“Idiot, he’s an intruder!”

“No, this might actually be good. We’ve never put a demon inside a priest before, have we?”

One part of their conversation caught Michael’s attention.

Put a demon inside someone? Forced possession?

It seemed these demons were trying to crudely imitate the abilities of Great Demons that could forcibly implant demons inside humans.

“Exactly! Sometimes we need someone who struggles!”

“Right! Big guy, deal with him!”

At one demon’s shout, a shadow covered Michael.

Apparently, another demon had been outside the room earlier.

The horned demon stood at least a head taller than Michael.

“GRAAAAAH!”

The demon clasped both hands together and swung them down like a hammer.

SLASH!

Michael instantly turned.

His sword drew a horizontal line.

“Nameless low-class trash like you really think you’re impressive just because you finished demonizing?”

BOOM!

The aura-filled blade glowed pale white as it sliced the demon called Big Guy completely in half.

“AAAAAAAGH!! It hurts! It hurts!!”

Aura remained on the severed wound.

Even without Michael actively controlling it, the aura began penetrating the demon’s body.

“…Guuuh.”

The demon slowly dried out while writhing in pain.

“What?”

Aura was a power that purified demons.

It did not normally drain their strength like this.

Michael focused his senses.

Among the aura purifying the demon’s body, he felt a small amount of demonic energy being pulled out and flowing into the sword.

What is this, some kind of demonic sword? Is it because I used the claw?

Michael had asked Heesong to make a weapon that conducted aura well.

Instead, she had somehow created a ridiculous sword that also absorbed demonic energy.

Most people might have wanted to seal such a weapon immediately.

Michael was different.

“This is pretty good. I should give it a name.”

Normally, demonic energy and holy power reacted violently against each other.

However, the aura flowing through the sword seemed to dominate and tame the demonic energy.

That created the bizarre possibility of using demonic energy to kill demons.

Michael was already excited by the idea.

Step, step.

While Michael thought about names, the demons quietly approached from behind.

“Hmm. It’s made from a claw, and it causes constant pain. Good. Your name is Claw Peeler.”

Michael gave the sword yet another terrible name.

While he proudly admired his naming sense, the demons behind him attached a sprayer to one of the gas cylinders and aimed it toward Michael.

“Spray him!”

PSSSSSSSH!!

The concentration of demonic energy was so thick that an ordinary person would have become paralyzed and collapsed.

Apparently expecting the demonic energy to weaken Michael, another demon with particularly strong demonic energy spread both hands.

WHOOOOSH!

Demonic energy lifted nearby chairs, whiteboards, desks, and other objects into the air.

Then they shot toward Michael.

“Who the hell do you think you’re messing with?!”

The demonic energy covering the objects increased their acceleration.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOOOM!

The accelerated objects crashed into Michael.

A cloud of dust filled the room.

Anyone unaware of who they were facing would have assumed Michael had suffered critical injuries.

WHOOOM!

Their opponent was Michael.

With a single swing of his sword, the objects shattered.

The demonic energy was absorbed into Claw Peeler.

“You seriously thought that would work? I waited because you were being so obvious that I wanted to see what you were planning…. Just die.”

Tap!

After absorbing enough demonic energy, the blade began turning purple.

SLASH! SLASH!

“AAAAAGH!”

“Guuuuh!”

A violet afterimage remained every time Michael swung.

Each demon cut by the blade lost its demonic energy and became thin and dry.

“Fight back!”

“Would you fight a monster like that?!”

“Guh, w, what the hell is happening over there too?”

While demons died one after another, one fortunate enough to survive a strike looked toward the platform.

Another situation was unfolding there.

Sangtae no longer looked anything like the confident host from earlier.

Now he was only furious at the delivery man who had led Michael here and ruined the plan.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Sangtae, who had struggled to stand back up, repeatedly kicked the man.

“Guh, guh! I, I’m sorry. I just wanted power like you people….”

“Power? Sure. Great.”

Sangtae immediately brought over one of the gas cylinders.

He grabbed the back of the delivery man’s head and forced the breathing mask connected to the cylinder over his face.

“Mmph! W, what are you doing?!”

“Why? You wanted to become like those demons, didn’t you? Then become one.”

Click. PSSSSSH!

Sangtae turned the regulator.

Demonic energy began flowing into the man through the breathing mask.

“MMMPH! MMMPH! MMMMPH!”

Thud.

After absorbing far too much demonic energy, the man gradually lost strength.

He never gained the power he wanted.

He simply died.

“Tch. You couldn’t even endure this, yet you wanted power? Idiot.”

Sangtae frowned as he watched Michael slaughter the demons.

“Useless bastards. No wonder they’re stuck in a place like this taking orders from worshippers…. I need to report to our master that an interferer appeared.”

Deciding to use the demons as bait while escaping, Sangtae quietly slipped from the platform toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

GRAB.

Michael had already finished dealing with the demons.

He grabbed Sangtae by the back of the neck and grinned.

“Want to die by being stabbed, or come quietly?”

Michael’s senses told him clearly that Sangtae was a demon worshipper.

If demon worshippers were involved, there was probably a larger plot behind everything.

Michael pressed the sword closer to Sangtae’s throat.

“W, well….”

Sangtae carefully looked at the weapon.

Claw Peeler glowed pale purple from the mixture of Michael’s aura and demonic energy.

It looked extremely sinister.

“Grrrrgh.”

Unable to even resist the killing intent coming from Michael and the sword, Sangtae foamed at the mouth and fainted.

“No pride at all. If it were me, I’d bite off my tongue and kill myself.”

Michael tied Sangtae up using his own outer jacket.

Then he looked around at the destruction he had created.

One unconscious man.

One dead man.

Piles of demon ash.

The sealed chamber was completely ruined.

“Even though I did it myself, this looks brutal.”

Fortunately, someone else could handle the cleanup.

Michael was about to contact Sia when hurried footsteps approached.

Step! Step! Step!

He briefly wondered whether it was another demon returning from outside.

His senses detected no demonic energy.

Step… step… step!

A hand grabbed the edge of the broken doorway.

“Haa, haa! You were here?! You suddenly disappeared and scared me!”

It was Sia, whom Michael had left behind at the park.

“You found me quickly.”

“A huge amount of demonic energy appeared, so I ran here immediately.”

Michael nodded and showed her the destroyed room.

Then he pointed toward the gas cylinders the demons had been using.

“These bastards seem to have caused trouble inside the department store. Contact ESP and tell them to search for cylinders like these.”

Since they were filled with demonic energy, ESP should find them quickly.

Then Michael dragged Sangtae over.

“The Exorcism Association should interrogate this one. He’s a demon worshipper.”

Sia’s eyes widened.

“A worshipper? Good grief. Understood. I already contacted ESP while coming here. As for the Exorcism Association, I’ll contact them separately.”

“All right. Oh, right.”

With the situation mostly settled, Michael sheathed the sword and pulled out his card.

“Buy the clothes you dropped again with this.”

“Weren’t you saving money to buy a house?”

Michael smiled bitterly as he remembered Korea’s terrifying real estate market.

“Saving the price of some clothes isn’t going to change those insane housing prices anyway. Forget it. You’re on vacation today. Think of it as a gift.”

“…Th, thank you.”

Seeing Sia’s face turn red again after accepting the card, Michael frowned.

“Your face is red. You really aren’t sick, right?”

“I, I’m fine! Huh? But is that sword really okay?”

Sia hurriedly changed the subject and pointed toward the sheath, which still gave off an unusual energy.

“This? It’s fine. It just absorbed a lot of energy. You worked hard too, Claw Peeler.”

Sia froze.

She had been following Michael’s explanation until she heard the disastrous name.

“Th, the sword’s name is C, Claw Peeler?”

“Yeah. Good name, right?”

Michael puffed out his chest proudly.

Sia immediately drove a nail straight through that pride.

“Michael, don’t ever tell anyone you’re good at naming things. You’re no better than Heesong Unnie.”

“….”

Michael did not want to hear that from someone who named animals Samsik and Jeomrye.

Still, saying that would only start an argument.

He stayed silent.

“Anyway, let’s go back!”

While contacting the Exorcism Association, Sia removed the finished items from her schedule and closed her phone.

“How could I take only your card and leave the owner behind?”

Then she smiled brightly and held out her hand.

“Let’s make the rest of my vacation worth it. Oh, and since you’re buying the clothes, you absolutely have to tell me how they look!”

“…Fine.”

Michael took her hand.

Sia’s smile suited her better than he expected.

They had already removed the immediate danger by wiping out the demons.

He had also been given permission to accompany her.

There was no longer any reason to secretly follow Sia.

In that sense, Michael had achieved his original goal.

“See how much better you look when you smile? Smile more often from now on. It suits you!”

At her words, Michael touched his own mouth.

The corners had unconsciously risen.

Everyday life, huh.

Talking with Sia somehow made him feel comfortable.

It was the same kind of ordinary peace he had once felt while spending time with Helena.

Michael gave a quiet scoff.

“…Yeah.”

For some reason, no other words came to him.

* * *

SHAAAAAAA.

In front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Austria, John stood beneath the heavy rain without an umbrella and muttered quietly.

“Durandal disappeared…. What unfortunate timing. Is this another trial You have given Your lambs?”
