Chapter 51. The Shooter of the Nativity

“…Did I hear that wrong?”

John quietly muttered after Gabriel’s sudden declaration that he would go to Korea.

“No. Your ears work perfectly fine, Bishop John. When I go to Korea this time, you’ll be my guide.”

“Haha… so you heard that.”

John had desperately hoped he had misunderstood.

Unfortunately, Gabriel’s hearing was excellent and immediately confirmed the words John least wanted to hear.

Gabriel scoffed at John’s awkward smile.

“Hmph. Anyway, I’ve delivered my message. Nocturne says there’s someone it wants to see…. This one is impatient, so finish everything within ten minutes.”

Gabriel affectionately stroked the nail gun he called Nocturne.

John nearly cringed.

I understand cherishing a Holy Relic, but isn’t that a little excessive…?

John swallowed the thought rather than saying it aloud.

Gabriel’s youthful appearance, looking as though he were in his twenties, and his above-average physical abilities came from the nail gun he carried.

One of Christ’s Holy Nails.

A Holy Relic had been embedded inside the nail gun.

It was one of the nails used to fasten Jesus to the cross on Golgotha.

The influence of the Holy Nail had stopped Gabriel’s aging and kept his body permanently strengthened.

“Even if you are the owner of a Special-Class Holy Relic, this behavior is excessive!”

At that moment, one of the bishops shouted.

The grade of a Holy Relic was usually connected to the achievements of its original owner.

Relics belonging to saints without major accomplishments were placed in the third rank.

Relics connected to widely known achievements were second rank.

Relics belonging to historically famous figures were first rank.

Because of that, the rank and actual performance of relics did not always match.

“Wait, the Holy Nail is a Special-Class Holy Relic?!”

“You didn’t know that? You’ve gotten old without learning anything.”

Some bishops were shocked simply hearing about Gabriel’s relic.

It existed on an entirely different level from ordinary Holy Relics.

Special-Class Holy Relic.

As far as John knew, Special-Class Holy Relics were objects directly connected to Christ or His disciples.

A representative example was Gabriel’s Holy Nail of Jesus.

“How annoying….”

The topic was controversial enough among the bishops to attract Gabriel’s attention.

“Hmmmm. The fallen angel dwelling in my right arm knows the answer, but refuses to tell me. More importantly, I don’t recognize you. Who are you?”

John had no idea what this fallen angel was supposed to be.

Earlier it had apparently been sleeping.

Now it was refusing to answer.

The thought of having to deal with this man made John’s head ache.

“I am Bishop Beno of St. Martin’s Cathedral in Slovakia.”

Beno, the bishop brave enough to confront Gabriel, wore a worn red cloak whose color had faded toward brown with age.

He looked to be in his thirties.

Excluding Gabriel, he appeared to be the youngest priest there.

He was recently promoted to bishop, if I remember correctly.

John remembered that Beno had been promoted after defeating a high-ranking demon.

Gabriel looked over his cloak after hearing the introduction.

“Then that cloak must be Saint Martin’s ‘Miraculous Cloak’?”

According to legend, Saint Martin once cut his cloak in half and shared it with a beggar.

The next day, the cloak was miraculously restored.

It later remained behind as a relic and was classified as second rank.

Beno nodded.

The relic originally belonged in France.

However, Beno’s father, the previous bishop, had earned significant achievements and received it directly from the Pope.

Since the cathedral itself carried Saint Martin’s name, Beno was deeply proud of both his father and the cloak.

“I will repeat myself. This gathering is practically a council. Such tyranny cannot be tolerated!”

The bishops had gathered because of Cardinal Antonio’s death.

However, there was another reason behind their presence.

When a serious problem occurred within the Church, the Pope could summon bishops to a council.

Not even cardinals had the authority to block such a gathering.

“…Pfft. Hahahaha! Hahahahahaha!”

Gabriel stared at Beno’s confident declaration with a blank expression.

Then suddenly burst into laughter.

“How ridiculous. Nocturne and my fallen angel can’t stop laughing after hearing you. If Saint Martin could see your childish behavior, he would regret leaving that cloak behind.”

Tremble. Clench.

Beno tightly clenched his shaking fist to suppress his anger.

“I will not overlook further disrespect.”

“Time continues passing while you complain. His Holiness isn’t even personally attending. A council in name only is meaningless.”

Ignoring Beno’s warning, Gabriel held the nail gun against his ear.

“What? The people buried in the catacombs say we’re being too noisy and should get out already?”

Then Gabriel turned toward John.

“Bishop John, you heard them. The people downstairs are complaining about noise from upstairs. Before Saint Martin has to see this pathetic mess, why don’t you, the cardinal candidate, end everything quickly?”

“Excuse me?”

John’s mouth opened at the arrow suddenly being redirected toward him.

Beno’s eyes flashed.

“Your mouth will be the death of you!”

Beno kicked off the floor and charged Gabriel with dense aura surrounding both fists.

However,

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

It happened in an instant.

Before Beno’s fist could reach Gabriel, five gunshots echoed.

THUD.

Before he even understood what had hit him, Beno collapsed onto the floor.

He grabbed his chest in pain.

His face turned pale.

Beno himself was shocked.

The bishops watching were equally speechless.

“How did he do that?!”

“Weren’t there only five shots?”

Five gunshots had sounded.

Thirteen holes now covered Beno’s cloak.

“G, guh!”

Sweat formed across Beno’s forehead.

He struggled to breathe and repeatedly struck his chest.

Whenever he barely managed to exhale, a thin whistling sound escaped.

WHOOSH!

While Beno continued suffering, the holes in his cloak regenerated.

Then thirteen holes appeared again.

This repeated over and over.

With every repetition, Beno’s pain gradually decreased.

“Haa. You’re weaker than the rumors suggested. I didn’t even need to recite a prayer.”

Gabriel had already stepped down to the floor.

Trying to look stylish, he blew across the nail gun despite there being no smoke.

“What? Nocturne, really? You think the fact that his cloak can’t block damage exceeding its limit means his own ability is lacking? I agree.”

Then he pressed the nail gun to his ear and started talking to it again.

Beno’s eyes trembled.

The Miraculous Cloak absorbed damage in place of its wearer.

Gabriel had dealt more damage than the relic could repair in a single moment.

No demon Beno had ever fought had managed that.

Even now, the cloak continued regenerating because it was still processing the damage.

“Now you understand the difference in our abilities? Primitive fool.”

Gabriel looked down at Beno.

The man who had boldly challenged him earlier could not even gather the courage to stand.

The contrast was almost embarrassing.

Click.

“Saint Teresa once said that prayer changes us, and we change the world. But my fallen angel says you weren’t relying on prayer, you were trying to take shortcuts.”

Apparently intending to finish things, Gabriel aimed the nail gun at Beno’s forehead.

“Thirteen holes symbolize a traitor, right? That means there shouldn’t be a problem if I execute him. What do you former inquisitors think?”

Gabriel treated the bishops like spectators at an execution.

Then he moved the nail gun toward the back of Beno’s head and started pulling the trigger.

WHOOOM! BOOM!

At that moment, a morning star wrapped in aura flew from among the bishops.

It buried itself perfectly between Gabriel and Beno.

“We can no longer tolerate the tyranny of such an arrogant man, brothers.”

“Leave the young one alone. Would you like to test yourself against us old men, Shooter?”

“Lord, examine the sins I committed today through thought, word, deed, and neglect of duty. Help me recognize those sins that have become habits within me. Amen.”

Three bishops stepped in front of Gabriel.

Shield.

Sword.

Spear.

Each carried a different weapon.

The bishop holding the shield pulled the morning star from the floor.

“Being favored by His Holiness does not give you the right to treat bishops however you please.”

“It has been a while since I used my sword. This works out nicely.”

“In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.”

John examined the three men.

A heavily muscled old man holding a shield and morning star.

A less muscular old man carrying a sword who radiated experience.

And finally, an old man holding a spear who continued praying.

Facing all three at once would not be easy even for Gabriel.

I should stop this soon.

John had wanted to intervene since the fight with Beno.

The three old men simply acted first.

They were clearly powerful.

Even so, John doubted they could defeat Gabriel.

He stood to stop them.

CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!

Before John could speak, Gabriel suddenly stood and applauded.

“Kukuku! You pass! You old men have incredible style. I can’t resist an entrance that cool. My fallen angel also says I should let you go.”

The three old bishops frowned.

They assumed Gabriel was making excuses to avoid a three-against-one fight.

“What is this supposed to be? Are you afraid now?”

“So even the Shooter of the Nativity was only famous in name?”

Gabriel laughed off their insults.

“Good, good. The fact that you use weapons already makes you impressive. No matter what happened, it means you’ve encountered a Great Demon before, right?!”

In Gabriel’s experience, the greatest change in a priest usually happened after encountering a Great Demon.

Priests who met one for the first time generally fell into three categories.

Those who accepted reality and searched for genuine weapons capable of fighting demons.

Those who refused to submit before an overwhelming wall and instead trained their aura and prayers even harder.

And finally,

Idiots who give up on everything.

Fortunately, the three old men before him had met Great Demons and still continued walking the path of priests.

People who did not surrender before despair deserved respect.

“What does that have to do with anything?! Pick up your nail gun!”

The muscular old man, his pride wounded, prepared to charge Gabriel.

The other two also readied themselves.

The atmosphere became explosive.

John finally stepped forward.

Clap, clap!

“All right, that’s enough! Would everyone mind allowing me to take some of your time now?”

John clapped twice to attract attention and changed the atmosphere.

They had fought enough.

Now they needed cooperation.

John looked toward Gabriel, silently asking permission.

“Do whatever you want. My fallen angel likes those three, so it says I can give you more time.”

John had no idea why permission came from the fallen angel rather than Nocturne.

Still, he received permission.

He stepped onto the altar.

This was where the real work began.

They needed to cooperate with the bishops gathered here and solve each problem one by one.

First,

“I hereby begin the temporary Council of St. Stephen. Today’s agenda concerns the missing Durandal,”

the location of the lost Holy Sword,

“and the death in battle of Cardinal Antonio.”

They needed to discover what kind of powerful enemy was waiting for them.

* * *

“Oof, my back. Am I getting old? Moving a few boxes shouldn’t make me ache this much.”

Heesong was carrying miscellaneous objects out of the basement she had never opened to anyone.

Flasks.

Fans.

Unknown mechanical parts.

Objects with absolutely nothing in common were appearing upstairs one after another.

“That damn bastard squeezed so much money out of me. I need to sell something to make it back.”

Michael had taken a huge amount of money from her during Glasya-Labolas’s trial.

Heesong was selecting objects she could sell to recover some of it.

“Yeonhwa’s living expenses, tuition, what else do I need? Haa. I never even got married, yet somehow I already have a kid. Life, how did you end up like this?”

Of course, she did not regret taking Yeonhwa in.

She was only upset about the money Michael had taken.

While Heesong continued organizing,

“Woof, woof!”

Taking advantage of her absence, Samsik stared at the open door.

“Woof woof! Woof! (This is our chance! Let’s go outside!)”

Samsik repeatedly tried sticking his head through the doorway.

Jeomrye bit his tail and pulled him back.

“Meow! Meow! Meow! (Why do you keep trying to go somewhere?!)”

“Woof woof! Grrr! (I’m getting out of this suffocating place! Don’t stop me!)”

Michael constantly left Samsik inside the cramped animal clinic.

The young puppy had been going crazy from boredom.

At an age when he should have been running everywhere, he was repeatedly trapped inside a tiny space.

“Hiss! Meow, meow! (I said no! What if we leave and can’t find our way back?!)”

“Woof! (Trust my instincts!)”

After giving the irresponsible answer, Samsik used his strength to shake Jeomrye off.

“Meow…. Meow! (I can’t deal with you. I’m coming too!)”

Filled with worry, Jeomrye followed Samsik outside.

Then,

“Kids, time to eat!”

Heesong returned after roughly finishing her work.

She carried their food upstairs.

Only an empty room greeted her.

“Huh…? Kids?”

An open door.

An empty clinic.

Heesong finally realized something had gone terribly wrong.

She sprinted out of the clinic.
