Chapter 149

Chapter 149. The Person I Am (1)

One look at No. 3’s eyes was enough to tell that he had already lost all reason.

He had clearly come here determined to start something.

If this continued, it could easily turn into a bloodbath.

“Stop!”

“No. 6 was only acting under Alpha’s orders!”

“If you have a problem with what happened, take it up with Alpha!”

Driven by the need to protect Yukgap, No. 7 stepped directly in No. 3’s path.

But No. 3 did not listen.

“Who cares?!”

“I just want to cut that bastard into pieeeeeeces!”

With a long roar, No. 3’s body expanded.

His skeleton swelled as he transformed into a massive tiger-like beast.

At that moment, he was nothing more than a predator excited by the prey before him.

As expected. There’s no talking him down.

No. 7’s eyes sharpened.

“If you’re going after No. 6, you’ll have to deal with me first.”

Black fur surged across No. 7’s body.

Her frame shifted into the sleek form of a jaguar.

Once she had fully released her Archon form, she stood firmly in his way.

No. 3 growled at her.

“I have no interest in killing women.”

“So move.”

“And if I don’t?”

No. 7 refused to budge.

No. 3 ground his teeth.

Then he abruptly swung his longsword.

“Then I’ll cut you apart too!”

The heavy blade came crashing toward her.

No. 7 merely smirked.

“Too slow.”

She slipped through the opening in an instant.

Her razor-sharp claws raked across No. 3’s chest.

Blood sprayed.

“Ghk!”

Caught off guard, No. 3 staggered.

Apparently, he had never expected her to exploit the tiny opening created by his attack.

No. 7 held up her claws.

“You Extermination Team types are slow.”

“And you’re unnecessarily huge, which just gives me more places to hit.”

“Shut up!”

No. 3 lost his temper and charged while swinging wildly.

But to No. 7, even that looked painfully sluggish and full of openings.

“As long as you’re not No. 5, I’m not particularly scared of you.”

She immediately closed the distance.

Then she swept her inward-curving claws through a long arc like blades.

Blood burst from No. 3’s shoulder.

“Aaaaaagh!”

“That hurts!”

No. 3 screamed under the repeated attacks.

No. 7 looked at him coldly.

“Perfect.”

“I’ve been stressed anyway.”

“I might as well take it out on you.”

“You dare treat me like some toy?!”

No. 3 clenched his teeth in rage.

Every swing of his longsword unleashed a shockwave.

No. 7 lowered her stance, preparing to attack again.

“You’re not even worth using my cloaking suit on.”

“I’ll carve you apart nice and slowly.”

Just as she charged again, a dagger suddenly flew between them.

Both immediately recognized it.

“Both of you, stop.”

For some reason, Yukgap staggered out with a deathly pale face.

The despair in his expression, as though he had lost everything in the world, had not changed at all.

“No. 6!”

“You finally feel like moving?!”

No. 3 looked delighted simply because Yukgap had appeared.

Yukgap stared at him blankly.

“I’m the one you want, right?”

“Damn right!”

“My arm ended up like this because of you!”

No. 3 furiously showed off his metal prosthetic.

Yukgap looked at it and let out a long sigh.

Then he spread his arms wide.

“Go ahead.”

“Kill me in one strike.”

“Cut off my head.”

“Or stab me through the heart.”

“What?”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Even No. 3 was stunned by the unexpected response.

But Yukgap did not seem to have the energy to explain.

“Or torture me for a while before you kill me.”

“I don’t care.”

His face showed that he had let go of everything.

He simply stood there waiting for No. 3’s blade.

No. 3 was not the only one shaken.

“Hey!”

“What the hell are you saying?!”

“Die?”

No. 7 was equally stunned that the man who had refused to speak a moment ago was suddenly asking to be killed.

Yukgap answered hollowly.

“Nothing matters anymore.”

His expression was empty.

There was not a trace of emotion in it.

“It’s over.”

“I don’t want to live anymore.”

“This body should’ve ended up like this from the beginning.”

“So just...”

“Kill me.”

He looked like someone who had completely abandoned everything.

He did not even release his Archon form.

He remained in his powerless human shape, simply waiting to die.

No. 3 raised his longsword again.

He cared far more about revenge than Yukgap’s state of mind.

“If that’s what you want, I’ll grant it!”

Just as No. 3 prepared to charge, the lights in the corridor suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the area.

No. 3 stopped in confusion.

“W-What?”

“Alpha controls the lighting here!”

Every facility inside No. 12 was controlled by Alpha.

With her overwhelming computational ability managing the base, equipment failures simply did not happen.

“I don’t know what happened, but this works for me.”

Using the darkness, No. 7, whose fur blended perfectly into the shadows, rushed forward.

Her claws slashed hard across No. 3’s knee.

“Ghk!”

His leg immediately buckled.

The strike had hit the joint perfectly.

It would regenerate eventually, but she had bought time.

“I told you.”

“I’m the one who gets to kill you.”

No. 7’s eyes gleamed as she walked toward Yukgap.

Then she suddenly grabbed him by the back of the neck and dragged him along.

Yukgap looked startled.

“What are you doing?”

“Shut up and follow me.”

“I’m not letting you die by someone else’s hand.”

With that, the two quickly disappeared down the dark corridor.

All that remained behind was silence and No. 3’s directionless rage.

“Ugh...”

Victoria slowly opened her eyes through tearing pain.

Blurred smoke filled her vision.

Broken machines lay everywhere.

Scorch marks covered the surroundings.

Victoria pushed herself upright and looked around.

“What happened?”

“Alpha was supposed to be readjusting my Philosopher’s Stone...”

Alpha had definitely tried to modify it using the equipment in the facility.

But for some reason, red light had suddenly erupted from the Philosopher’s Stone.

Both of them had been swallowed by the resulting shock.

After that, Victoria remembered nothing.

Apparently, she had lost consciousness.

“Alpha?”

“Are you okay?”

Victoria cautiously called out.

No answer came.

“Alpha?”

Only then did Victoria notice how unnaturally dark everything was.

The monitor displaying Alpha had gone black.

So had all the lights.

She did not know exactly what had happened, but the recent impact seemed to have caused a complete blackout.

“I don’t know what happened...”

“But this is my chance.”

If the facility had lost power, Alpha’s functions might also be temporarily disabled.

This was the only chance she would get to escape.

Victoria immediately ran out and looked around.

She did not know what was happening elsewhere in the facility.

But Yukgap had supposedly brought her here.

That meant he had to be somewhere inside.

No matter how deeply they were trapped in Abraxas’s headquarters, she could not run away alone.

“Yukgap!”

“Where are you?!”

“If you can hear me, say something!”

Victoria wandered through the darkened facility, shouting at the top of her lungs.

How long had she been searching?

A familiar voice finally came from the darkness.

“Are you looking for the chef?”

Victoria immediately stopped.

She knew that voice.

“You...?”

A thin, pale-looking man stepped out of the darkness.

No. 8.

Theta.

One of the Archons she had encountered several times before.

He smiled lightly at her.

“If you don’t mind, I can guide you.”

“My night vision is excellent.”

“What are you planning?”

Victoria immediately became wary.

No. 8 shrugged.

“Nothing in particular.”

“I only came out because No. 12 suddenly stopped functioning, and I wanted to know what happened.”

“No. 12 stopped functioning?”

“Is that Archon in charge of the facility’s machinery or something?”

No. 8 gestured ahead with his chin.

“I’ll explain while we walk.”

“It’s a rather long story.”

“You’re telling me this entire base is an Archon?”

Victoria asked in disbelief after hearing No. 8’s explanation.

No. 8 clarified,

“To be precise, it would be more accurate to say that No. 12 carries the base on his back.”

“No. 12 is an Archon fused with a blue whale.”

“His body was enlarged several times, so he’s now several hundred meters long.”

That naturally raised another question.

“Then what happens when he changes back into a human?”

“No. 12 cannot return to human form.”

“Unlike the rest of us, he spends his entire life in the form of a beast.”

Victoria summed it up in one word.

“Cruel.”

No. 8 did not seem bothered.

“We are weapons.”

“There is no need to feel that way about weapons.”

Victoria immediately objected.

“Then why have you helped us several times?”

“I wasn’t helping you.”

“I was helping No. 6.”

No. 8 answered firmly.

Victoria pressed him.

“Then why?”

No. 8 paused.

Why had he acted that way?

On the surface, he had always claimed he was following Alpha’s orders.

But if he was honest, that had never really been the reason.

He had simply wanted to help Yukgap.

After thinking for a while, No. 8 answered flatly,

“I don’t know.”

“Why did I?”

Victoria replied with certainty.

“The reason is simple.”

“You and Yukgap are friends.”

“Friends?”

“Exactly.”

“People naturally want to help their friends.”

“And that’s also the greatest proof that you Archons aren’t weapons.”

“You’re people.”

Friends.

No. 8 knew what the word meant.

Yet it felt strangely unfamiliar when applied to himself.

After thinking about it for a moment, he slowly nodded.

“Friends...”

“Perhaps that’s what we are.”
