Chapter 55. A Sinner Called Mother (2)
[Anyway, this settles the debt I owed you. If you need my help again next time, you’ll have to prepare something of equal value.]
Doctor Mozg spoke in a stiff tone, almost as if warning him.
Seryun grumbled loudly enough for her to hear.
“She really is stingy every single time I see her.”
The moment she heard that, Doctor Mozg shrieked.
[Shut up! When we lived together, I paid more of the living expenses than you did!]
Seryun immediately shot back.
“Oh, please. I did more of the housework.”
[Housework? What housework? You were constantly letting bizarre experimental creatures loose! Do you have any idea how much trouble I went through cleaning up after them?!]
The two immediately started growling at each other again.
At this rate, the argument was going to drag on forever.
Victoria hurriedly pushed Yukgap from behind.
“Let’s go. Nothing good ever comes from getting caught in a childish fight between divorced spouses.”
“Y-Yeah.”
Yukgap nodded while gripping the information he had received.
For once, following Victoria’s advice seemed best for his own well-being.
“Name: Choi Subin.”
Sitting in the passenger seat, Victoria calmly read through the information Doctor Mozg had given them.
“Apparently, she operated overseas under the name ‘Ronnie.’ She’s one of Kevin’s closest associates. Looks like she mainly recruited mercenaries in Korea and China.”
Yukgap, sitting behind the wheel, carefully asked,
“Then do you think she might know about me?”
“She might even be the one who recruited you. If that’s the case, we won’t have to meet Kevin at all. We could just ask her about your past.”
“I hope she knows something.”
Yukgap held onto that hope as he drove toward the outskirts of the city.
Before long, they arrived near a residential neighborhood.
“This is the address from the file.”
Victoria compared the information with the house in front of them.
Yukgap looked around.
“For a mercenary broker, this is an awfully normal place to live.”
“Yeah.”
There was nothing but an ordinary row of detached houses.
It looked so normal that the normality itself felt suspicious.
While they were talking, the front gate of one house suddenly opened.
“Crap!”
“Hide!”
Yukgap and Victoria ducked behind the food truck at the same time.
A neatly dressed man in glasses and a suit stepped outside.
“I’m off to work.”
He spoke warmly.
A child’s voice and a woman’s voice answered from inside.
“Bye, Dad! Have a good day!”
“Take care, honey.”
The man answered his family affectionately.
“I’ll be late today. Eat dinner without me.”
“Okay.”
With that, he headed toward a car parked along the street.
Still hiding behind the food truck, Yukgap and Victoria cautiously whispered to each other.
“Those must be his wife and kid.”
“Then that guy must be Choi Subin.”
The man went off to work without realizing anyone had been watching him.
He looked no different from an ordinary office worker.
Yukgap could hardly believe an underworld mercenary broker would look like that.
“Do you think his family knows Choi Subin is a mercenary broker?”
“Probably not. Look at him. He’s dressed like a salaryman. He probably keeps it secret from them.”
Victoria seemed just as baffled.
Then she abruptly asked Yukgap,
“Are we following him?”
Yukgap thought for a moment, then shook his head.
“Not yet. The timing isn’t right. If we approach carelessly, Choi Subin might sell me out to Abraxas. We need to be careful.”
“Then what?”
“We wait until night. For now, we watch while pretending to run the food truck.”
Just in case, they had brought Robert in food-truck form.
The plan was to pretend to sell food while observing their target.
“Excuse me!”
A sharp voice suddenly cut in.
A fierce-looking woman with messy hair came striding toward them.
She glared at Yukgap and Victoria as though they were already getting on her nerves.
“W-What is it?”
Yukgap stumbled over his words.
The woman pointed angrily at their food truck.
“Don’t do business here. The kindergarten buses use this road.”
“B-But I have something really important to do...”
“I don’t care! Move the truck before I call city hall!”
The woman yelled whatever she wanted to say and then strode off.
Victoria stared after her in disbelief.
“What’s her problem?”
Yukgap tried to calm her.
“Let’s just move. Causing a scene won’t help us.”
“Haa.”
The man sighed as he headed home.
Between working overtime and attending a company dinner, his entire body felt like lead.
All he wanted was to get inside and rest.
“Hey. Wait a second.”
Yukgap, who had been waiting for him to come back, stepped in front of him.
The man immediately looked wary.
“Who are you?”
