Chapter 75

Chapter 75. Victoria’s Ordinary Afternoon (1)

“Huh?”

Yukgap tilted his head while checking the cupboard in the middle of preparing food.

Victoria noticed and asked,

“What’s wrong?”

“We’re out of soy sauce. I forgot I was supposed to buy some yesterday. I’ll run to the supermarket nearby.”

Yukgap held up the empty soy sauce bottle.

Victoria immediately raised her hand and stood up as though she had been waiting for an excuse.

“Then I’ll go! I was getting bored anyway.”

“You’re the owner. Should you really be doing little errands like that?”

“Come on. I’m not some authoritarian owner.”

Victoria grinned.

“Besides, I’m bored.”

She seemed delighted to have found something to do.

Yukgap nodded.

“Fine. Then buy some soy sauce.”

“Got it. I’ll be right back.”

Victoria left Restaurant Shelley while humming to herself.

It was late afternoon.

Warm sunlight filled the quiet back alley.

Nothing seemed likely to happen.

It was an utterly normal, peaceful day.

“Hmm-hmm-hmm. Nice weather.”

Yuhyeok carefully watched the woman walking along while humming from behind a wall.

There was no mistake.

The stitched scar across her face.

Blonde hair.

And a towering height close to two meters.

She was definitely their target.

“Is that really the daughter of that famous alchemist, Mary Frankenstein?”

His companion Sewoon asked while gesturing toward the woman.

Yuhyeok immediately nodded.

“Yeah. She’s Mary Frankenstein’s only blood relative. The same Mary Frankenstein rumored to have created the Philosopher’s Stone.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“Her name was Victoria Frankenstein, I think. She might know where the Philosopher’s Stone is.”

Their other companion, Jincheol, spoke excitedly.

“If we actually find the real Philosopher’s Stone, we could leave this back-alley life behind.”

“Leave it behind? The three of us could live like kings.”

Yuhyeok looked at his companions with anticipation.

Yuhyeok.

Sewoon.

Jincheol.

The three had met in prison after getting caught committing petty theft in the back alleys.

They had not met beneath a peach tree like sworn brothers from an old tale.

Instead, they had met behind the cold walls of a prison.

Even so, they had quickly become close and decided to stick together for life.

And now they were watching for the perfect opportunity to pull off one final score that could turn their lives around.

“All right.”

Yuhyeok, acting as their leader, spoke with resolve.

“We kidnap her.”

Jincheol asked nervously,

“Can we really do that? She doesn’t exactly look normal.”

“She’s still just one woman. There are three of us.”

Yuhyeok had clearly already made up his mind.

Sewoon smiled knowingly and took out the tranquilizer gun they had struggled to acquire.

“That’s why I went through all that trouble to get this from the Crescent Moon Auction.”

“They said the drug in this thing could knock out ten grown men. One woman should be nothing.”

Yuhyeok spoke tensely.

“Then we shoot her first and knock her out. Got it?”

“What do we do after that?”

Jincheol asked.

Yuhyeok answered as if there was nothing to think about.

“We kidnap her and make her tell us where the Philosopher’s Stone is.”

They had even prepared an isolated warehouse nearby where nobody would come looking.

Sewoon would shoot Victoria with the tranquilizer gun.

Once she lost consciousness, the three of them would quickly drag her away.

Then they would scare her enough to make her reveal the location of the Philosopher’s Stone.

Simple.

Clean.

That was today’s entire plan.

“Good. She’s coming...!”

Sewoon aimed through a small opening in the wall and breathed slowly.

Their target, Victoria Frankenstein, walked peacefully along, completely unaware of what was about to happen.

The moment she entered range, Sewoon pulled the trigger without hesitation.

“Go to sleep!”

The tranquilizer dart shot forward with a sharp sound.

It struck Victoria squarely in the back of the neck.

“Ow!”

Victoria raised her voice in surprise at the sudden sting.

She reached behind her neck and stared curiously at the dart.

“What’s this?”

Watching from hiding, Sewoon clenched his fist in triumph.

“Good. She’ll collapse any second now!”

But contrary to his expectations, Victoria neither fainted nor fell.

She simply pulled out the dart, tossed it away, and complained,

“Jeez. Who’s playing such a nasty prank?”

Then she casually continued walking down the alley.

Yuhyeok, who had been waiting for her to collapse, shouted in disbelief,

“What the hell? Nothing happened!”

“N-No way! They said that tranquilizer was insanely strong!”

“Did you get scammed?”

At Yuhyeok’s question, Sewoon picked up the dart Victoria had thrown away.

He indignantly protested while tapping the drug-coated tip.

“No way! They clearly said even brushing against this would... Huuuuh...”

His voice faded weakly.

Then Sewoon collapsed.

Jincheol watched him fall and summed it up briefly.

“He fainted.”

Yuhyeok shook his head.

“Leave that idiot. We’ll kidnap her ourselves.”

“Do you have another plan?”

The tranquilizer gun had already failed.

What else could they possibly do?

Yuhyeok grinned.

“We use a method that women have fallen for since ancient times.”

“Please help! Please help!”

Yuhyeok stood beneath a nearby tree and cried out pitifully.

Victoria, who had been walking past, heard him and became curious.

“What happened?”

Good. She took the bait.

Yuhyeok smiled wickedly to himself and lied with complete sincerity.

“Miss! The tall lady over there! Please help us get our cat down! It climbed up and can’t come back!”

He pointed toward the top of the tree.

A gray cat was clinging there, unable to move.

“Meow.”

“Oh my gosh, how cute!”

The moment Victoria saw the cat, she became completely absorbed.

Seeing her interest, Yuhyeok carefully asked,

“Can you reach it? If so, could you please bring it down?”

“Don’t worry. This much is easy.”

Victoria stepped forward as though helping was the most natural thing in the world.

Yuhyeok quietly smiled in victory.

While she was distracted by the cat, he and Jincheol planned to jump her from behind with the rope and cloth they had prepared.

“Hup!”

At that moment, Victoria punched the middle of the tree with all her strength.

CRACK!

The tree split in half with a thunderous sound.

Victoria grabbed the trunk and calmly lowered the entire thing sideways.

The cat still clinging to the top looked confused.

“Meow?”

Victoria smiled brightly at Yuhyeok.

“There. Hurry and take the cat.”

“Th-Thank you.”

Yuhyeok blankly picked up the cat from the fallen treetop.

Did I just hallucinate?

If not...

Were trees really something that could be broken in half with a single punch?

It felt like every piece of common sense he knew had just been denied.

“Hehe. Don’t mention it!”

Victoria casually tossed the tree aside into the street.

Then she resumed humming and continued on her way.

“Wow. She’s insanely strong.”

Jincheol, who had been hiding nearby and watching everything, spoke in amazement.

Yuhyeok stared blankly after Victoria.

“So this plan’s no good either.”

“What do we do? I don’t think we can beat her with force.”

Jincheol sounded hopeless.

The woman could break a large tree with one punch.

What were the three of them supposed to do against that?

“We can’t give up on the Philosopher’s Stone! Do you have any idea how valuable that thing is?!”

Yuhyeok clearly had no intention of abandoning his greed.

But Sewoon and Jincheol were far less enthusiastic.

“Are we even sure she knows anything about the Philosopher’s Stone? She lives way too normally for someone who supposedly does.”

“I heard the Philosopher’s Stone can produce gold, but she’s just running some ordinary restaurant.”

Yuhyeok clicked his tongue at them.

“Tch, tch, tch. You guys don’t know anything. Turning things into gold with the Philosopher’s Stone is just a myth.”

He leaned closer.

“But it has a far greater power.”

“What?”

Sewoon asked.

Yuhyeok answered gravely.

“They say it can bring the dead back to life.”

He was completely serious.

But Sewoon and Jincheol looked unconvinced.

“Come on. Even if it’s amazing, bringing the dead back to life?”

“Yeah, that’s impossible. Maybe as an undead, sure.”

There were ways to return as an undead.

But that was little more than forcing consciousness to remain attached to a decaying body and postponing death.

Because of that, even in the back alleys, undead were treated with contempt.

The lowest of the low.

Only a rare handful of people with obsessions or purposes strong enough to overcome even death would willingly choose such an existence.

“No! I definitely heard it from an alchemist I met in prison!”

Yuhyeok insisted stubbornly.

“Doctor Mary created the Philosopher’s Stone specifically to revive the dead, and I heard she succeeded!”

Even then, his companions remained unimpressed.

“But Doctor Mary herself is dead now.”

“Exactly. If the Philosopher’s Stone really worked like that, shouldn’t she have used it to become immortal?”

Faced with those perfectly reasonable arguments, Yuhyeok went silent.

“W-Well...”

They had a point.

If the Philosopher’s Stone could revive the dead, why had its creator, Doctor Mary, died?

Flustered, Yuhyeok quickly changed the subject.

“Anyway, sitting around talking among ourselves won’t get us anywhere.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“There’s an old saying. If you want to catch a tiger, you have to enter the tiger’s den.”

Yuhyeok’s eyes gleamed as he looked toward a small restaurant farther down the back alley.

“We go directly into the restaurant run by Doctor Mary’s daughter.”
