Chapter 89

Chapter 89. Silence and Darkness (2)

“Mijiiiin! No! My daughter! Mijiiiin!”

A middle-aged woman screamed in horror at the sight.

Apparently, she was Mijin’s mother.

No. 10 ignored her completely.

He opened his jaws wider and swallowed half of Mijin’s small body in a single bite.

Blood that clearly belonged to Mijin ran down from the corners of his mouth.

Gulp.

No. 10 tilted his head back and forced the rest of her body into his stomach.

Her body slid helplessly into his mouth.

“Nooooooo!”

Yukgap screamed as well, his eyes bloodshot.

But No. 10 only muttered coldly,

“Sample acquisition complete.”

After swallowing Mijin whole, his stomach looked slightly more swollen than usual.

Yukgap could only let out a long, broken sound.

“Aah... aaah...”

She was dead.

The girl who had chattered beside him from the moment they met.

The girl who had rushed at No. 10 with that tiny body because she wanted to save him.

She had been crushed and swallowed in an instant.

And Yukgap had been unable to do anything.

Nothing.

A crushing sense of guilt pressed down on his mind.

“You son of a biiiiiiitch!”

Yukgap gritted his teeth and reversed his grip on his daggers.

Hatred and rage surged through his yellow eyes.

Then a savage roar burst from his throat.

“ROOOOOOAR!”

His body became a yellow streak and repeatedly slammed toward No. 10.

The daggers in his hands flashed like an animal’s fangs as they struck No. 10’s armor again and again.

Clang! Clang-clang!

The sound of monomolecular cutters colliding with reinforced armor echoed without pause.

“I told you, your attacks don’t work!”

No. 10 shouted while tracking Yukgap’s movements with his eyes.

But Yukgap never stopped swinging.

Four strikes per second.

Sixteen.

Sixty-four.

One hundred and twenty-eight.

His blades accelerated further and further as he lost himself to rage.

Every strike began concentrating on the same spot.

Like water dripping against stone, the attacks slowly ground away at one point.

Then, at last...

Crack.

A fracture appeared in No. 10’s reinforced armor.

“W-What?”

Shock crossed No. 10’s face.

His overtechnology weapon boasted absolute defense.

He had never even imagined it could crack.

“Don’t worry.”

Yukgap panted heavily as he glared at him.

“I’m not going to kill you.”

His eyes locked onto the fractured section of armor.

“But I swear I’ll cut open that stomach of yours.”

Yukgap accelerated again.

There was nothing left in him but violent, indescribable fury.

Surrendering himself completely to that emotion, he raised his arm and aimed directly for the cracked armor.

“No. 6, you’ve become quite emotional since we last met.”

At that moment, white mist suddenly gathered in front of him.

It slowly took the shape of a person.

Yukgap immediately recognized the one calling him by his old name.

“No. 11?”

His former comrade.

Another of the Twelve Archons.

The sudden appearance of No. 11 made Yukgap stop his attack.

No. 11 greeted him with a friendly wave.

“It’s been a while. Have you been well?”

He sounded like an old friend asking after him.

Yukgap growled.

“Move! I don’t have time to deal with you!”

“Oh, I’m afraid I can’t.”

No. 11 smiled pleasantly.

“We have orders from Abraxas.”

Then he simply looked at Yukgap.

Agonizing pain, as if his chest were being seared from the inside, suddenly erupted.

“Ghhk! Kgh! Ghk!”

Yukgap collapsed to his knees.

Bright red blood began pouring continuously from his nose and mouth.

He could barely breathe.

He could only choke and cough up the blood flooding into his throat.

“I would rather not have gone this far with you.”

No. 11 watched him calmly.

“But you did not seem likely to calm down.”

“Well, you are one of the Twelve Archons. I trust this much damage will heal with time.”

While Yukgap struggled to breathe, No. 10 smacked his lips and asked indifferently,

“The experimental sample has been secured.”

“There’s no reason to remain here.”

“Is that so?”

No. 11 nodded.

“I just finished disposing of the original as well.”

No. 10 looked around.

“What about the rest?”

Many experimental subjects derived from the original still remained.

The daughters born without fathers, inheriting their mother’s genes exactly.

No. 10’s eyes gleamed ominously as he looked at them.

If given the order, he seemed ready to slaughter them all immediately.

“The combination was completed just now.”

No. 11 casually struck the ground with his cane.

Thump.

A short but powerful vibration spread through the area.

“Ghhhk! Kghhh! Aaaaaagh!”

“Cough! Ugh! It hurts! It hurts!”

“Ghhhk... please... save me... please...!”

At once, the surrounding women began collapsing just like Yukgap.

Blood poured from their noses and mouths.

The area filled with screams and agonized groans.

No. 10 briefly commented on how quickly everything had been settled.

“Clean. I like it.”

Neither of them appeared to feel the slightest guilt over so many deaths.

No. 10 merely watched while No. 11 slaughtered the women as though clearing away unwanted objects.

“Why...?”

Yukgap forced the words through a mouth drenched in blood.

His whole body trembled from pain, but he still screamed desperately.

“Why are you doing this?!”

“These people lived quietly!”

“They were never any threat to Abraxas!”

“Why do you have to go this far?!”

No. 11 looked genuinely confused.

“Are you truly asking because you don’t understand?”

He let out a short laugh.

“These ladies were born through Abraxas technology.”

“The contract period has ended, and they failed to provide any meaningful research data.”

“So why should we leave them alive?”

He spoke as though the answer were obvious.

“Of course we follow the disposal procedure.”

Yukgap immediately shouted back,

“But they’re people!”

“They’re living human beings!”

No. 11 did not even blink.

“We Archons are weapons.”

“Do knives or bullets avoid someone simply because they are alive?”

He looked at Yukgap with something close to contempt.

“And hearing such words from you, the fastest Stalker, is rather absurd.”

“You’ve been killing people under Abraxas’s orders just fine until now.”

“Th-That...!”

Yukgap fell silent.

The words struck directly at the truth.

Even if he had never wanted it, his hands had still been stained with blood.

Just like the other Archons standing before him.

“Still, let me offer you one piece of advice.”

No. 11 smiled unpleasantly.

“It will take a little time before the ladies here actually die.”

Sadistic amusement gleamed across his face.

“If you struggle hard enough, you may be lucky enough to save a few of them.”

“So do your best.”

With that, No. 11 lightly tapped his cane against the ground.

His body slowly faded.

It began dissolving into mist.

He was clearly preparing to leave.

Yukgap immediately shouted,

“Where are you going?!”

“I have work to do in Korea.”

“We’ll soon be launching a large-scale project.”

By then, more than half of No. 11’s body had already vanished.

He looked toward Yukgap and asked teasingly,

“What will you do?”

“Come after us?”

“Or save the ladies here?”

His voice sharpened.

“Or perhaps you intend to fight both me and No. 10 at once?”

“In your current condition, I doubt that would go well.”

He understood Yukgap’s condition perfectly.

No. 11 was right.

Yukgap did not have the strength to fight both of them now.

He barely had enough time to recover himself.

And more importantly...

There were people all around him who needed saving.

“Damn it!”

Just as No. 11 had expected, Yukgap neither pursued nor attacked.

Realizing what choice Yukgap had made, No. 11 smiled with satisfaction.

“We’ll meet again soon.”

“Alpha asked me to give you her regards.”

“Alpha?”

Yukgap looked up in surprise at the unexpected name.

It sounded as though Alpha had known Yukgap would be here.

No. 11 asked,

“Have you never found it strange?”

“Why were neither No. 10 nor I surprised to see you here?”

“You deserted Abraxas, after all.”

“That’s...”

Yukgap trailed off.

He had only come here because of the information No. 5 had brought him.

Had it been a trap from the beginning?

Seeing his confusion, No. 11 continued,

“Just so there is no misunderstanding, No. 5 did not betray you.”

“Alpha simply told us everything.”

“She told us that you would be here.”

“And who you would be with.”

“And what you would be doing.”

It was as though Alpha had predicted even No. 5’s betrayal and her decision to approach Yukgap.

No. 11 gave him one final warning.

“No. 6.”

“No matter what you do, everything lies within Alpha’s prophecy.”

“There is no such thing as coincidence.”

“There is only carefully arranged inevitability.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

Yukgap stared at him.

“Are you saying everything that happened to me was part of Abraxas’s calculations?”

No. 11 extended a hand toward him.

“Would you like to come with us?”

“If you do, I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”

“This, too, is Alpha’s order.”

“You know that I do not refuse Alpha’s commands.”

He was probably telling the truth.

The Archons, Yukgap included, did not reject Alpha’s orders.

More precisely...

They had not been made capable of rejecting them.

If Yukgap accepted that hand, he might finally learn every answer he had been searching for.

He remained silent for a long moment.

Then he slowly shook his head.

“I’m... not going.”

“There are people here I have to save.”

No. 11 smiled.

“Just as Alpha said.”

And with that, his body completely vanished into the air.

No. 10 glanced once at Yukgap.

Then he turned and stomped away through the undergrowth.

Surrounded by agonized screams from every direction, Yukgap could do nothing but watch helplessly as the two Archons disappeared.
