Chapter 15

Chapter 15. Things That Make Money

"Should we take it?"

Do-yoon and Liana spoke almost at the same time.

They looked at each other for a moment.

Then both laughed.

At the very top of the Mercenary Guild board was a request bordered in red.

[Emergency Investigation Request]

[Northern Abandoned Mine Investigation]

[Reward: 3 Gold Coins]

Do-yoon slowly read it again.

"Investigation request?"

"Yeah."

Liana crossed her arms.

"It's not a subjugation mission."

"Big difference?"

"Huge."

She lightly tapped the title with one finger.

"Subjugation ends once you kill the target."

"And investigation?"

"You have to come back alive before it counts as finished."

Do-yoon laughed.

"That sounds harder."

"That's why it pays more."

An investigation request meant confirming dangers and bringing information back.

What monsters were there?

How strong were they?

Why had the incident happened?

The guild sent people to collect those answers.

The request only counted as a success if the investigator returned alive.

But Do-yoon was making a different calculation.

Three gold coins.

Clearly a lot of money.

But his standards had already begun changing.

Instant noodles.

Chocolate.

Coffee mix.

Soap.

Those things alone were enough to make money.

But there were limits.

He could carry only so much at once.

And the black market itself was not infinite.

Potions were different.

They saved lives.

They kept people from dying.

If survival was possible...

People would willingly pay amounts beyond imagination.

Do-yoon was already beginning to understand that truth in both worlds.

"What are you thinking about?"

Liana asked.

"Money."

"Of course."

Do-yoon smiled and nodded.

"If I could just secure a stable supply of good potions, that would solve everything."

Liana blinked.

"Potions?"

"Yeah."

"They're extremely expensive."

"How expensive?"

Liana thought briefly.

Then raised one finger.

"Standard potion."

"Effect?"

"Small cuts."

"Price?"

"Two silver coins."

Do-yoon looked surprised.

Cheaper than expected.

Then Liana raised a second finger.

"Intermediate potion."

"Yeah."

"Deep wounds."

"And?"

"Twenty silver coins."

Do-yoon's gaze changed.

Ten times more.

Then Liana raised the final finger.

"High-Grade Potion."

"..."

"Organ damage."

"..."

"Severe fractures."

"..."

"At least five gold coins."

Do-yoon quietly inhaled.

Five gold coins.

Converted into real-world money...

It would be an enormous amount.

Liana continued.

"Even nobles can't easily obtain Top-Grade Potions."

"Why?"

"Almost no one can make them."

Do-yoon's mind began moving rapidly.

Potions.

They did not exist in reality.

They were rare even here.

Then their value could become absurd.

The back of his hand suddenly grew warm.

Pride.

Recently, the fruit had been reacting far more often.

Especially whenever Do-yoon imagined greater wealth...

And higher positions.

Almost as if it enjoyed desire itself.

In the end, the two removed the request from the board.

Northern Abandoned Mine.

About two hours on foot from the royal capital.

Once they left the city gates, a broad grassland spread before them.

Soft wind moved through the grass.

Farmers worked in fields beside the road.

Wagons passed.

Children ran through open fields.

Do-yoon slowly looked around.

"It's more peaceful than I expected."

"What is?"

"This world."

Liana laughed.

"Did you think only monsters lived here?"

"A little."

"People still need to eat."

For some reason, the words felt extremely realistic.

Life continued even outside the royal capital.

Children laughed.

Farmers planted seeds.

Merchants sold goods.

It was not that different from reality.

Two hours later...

The Northern Abandoned Mine came into view.

A massive entrance.

Collapsed wooden supports.

Rusted mine carts.

Abandoned tunnels.

But the first thing Do-yoon noticed...

Was the silence.

Too quiet.

Even the wind sounded loud.

Liana stopped.

"Something's wrong."

"Why?"

"If investigation requests have been coming from this place, there should be signs of mercenaries entering and leaving."

Do-yoon looked down.

There were almost no recent footprints.

It looked as though no one had entered for a very long time.

"Let's be careful."

Liana grabbed the handle of her sword.

Do-yoon drew his dagger.

The inside of the mine was damp.

Drops of water fell endlessly from the ceiling.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

As the darkness began swallowing their vision, Do-yoon pulled a flashlight from his pocket.

White light stretched deep into the tunnel.

Liana stared at it in surprise.

"What's that now?"

"Secret."

"You really have a lot of weird things."

"Convenient, right?"

Liana admitted it honestly.

"Extremely."

Do-yoon laughed inwardly.

Modern civilization really was impressive.

They had been walking inside the tunnel for around twenty minutes when the flashlight illuminated something.

A person.

More accurately...

Human bones.

Pieces of armor and old leather equipment were scattered across the ground.

Liana's expression hardened.

"A mercenary."

"How do you know?"

She pointed at the necklace around the skeleton's neck.

The emblem of the Mercenary Guild was engraved on it.

Someone had accepted an investigation request here.

And never returned.

Do-yoon looked around.

Then noticed something faintly glowing inside one wall.

Blue light.

Ore.

"What's that?"

Liana's eyes widened.

"Mana Stone!"

She practically ran toward it.

"A real Mana Stone!"

Do-yoon approached too.

The Mana Stone embedded in the wall was slightly larger than his palm.

Blue light pulsed inside it like a heartbeat.

The core energy source of this world's civilization.

Mana Stone.

"You could sell this one alone for dozens of silver coins."

Excitement entered Liana's voice.

Do-yoon leaned closer to inspect it.

Then suddenly...

The back of his hand burned.

Pride.

Hotter than ever before.

Do-yoon instinctively turned around.

"Liana."

"What?"

"Behind us."

Liana slowly turned.

Then froze.

Inside the darkness...

One red eye appeared.

No.

Two.

Four.

Six.

Ten.

Twenty.

Dozens.

It looked as though the entire tunnel had filled with red eyes.

Then...

BOOM.

The ground shook violently.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Liana's face turned completely pale.

"Do-yoon."

"Yeah."

"We..."

She swallowed.

"Picked the wrong request."

BOOM.

The ground shook again.

Closer this time.

The red eyes began moving one after another.

Then an enormous shadow slowly stepped forward.

At first, Do-yoon thought it was a boulder.

It was not.

Gray fur.

Long protruding front teeth.

An enormous body covered in muscle.

Dozens of times larger than a normal rat.

A gigantic beast large enough to block the entire tunnel emerged from the darkness.

Do-yoon swallowed without realizing it.

They had not entered the mine to investigate it.

They had walked directly into the center of a massive nest.

And the enormous monster's red eyes slowly turned...

Straight toward Kim Do-yoon.
