Chapter 48

How to Live as a Hero in a Magical World (48)

Settling Accounts Is Fun

It was a clean break that Pett hadn't expected.

"I'm requesting termination of the request due to identity fraud by the client and the discovery of a double contract."

Identity fraud and a double contract.

He had tried to deceive merchants.

There was no way the price would be small.

Only then did Pett wipe the drool from his mouth and look at Kaian.

"M-Mister Reaper..."

He put on the most pitiful expression he could manage.

But it was already too late.

The employee at the information desk placed her hand on the crystal orb and recorded the conversation.

"Thank you for informing us."

She continued politely.

"We will temporarily isolate this space so that we can hear the details."

"If you feel nauseous or uncomfortable at any point, please tell me immediately."

Then she pulled a wand from her waist.

Swish.

The movement was perfectly clean.

Not a single unnecessary motion.

Kaian admired it.

No matter how many times I see it, it's so neat.

The stance a mage took when using magic was called their casting posture.

Its style varied enormously depending on the mage's personality.

But the casting postures of Saint Dust employees all resembled the woman standing before him.

It felt almost ceremonial.

Like swordsmanship or a formal tea ceremony.

It was very different from Kaian's own style, which favored slightly flashy but highly efficient magic.

Maybe it's because she uses a wand.

Kaian didn't use a wand when casting.

Partly because Eldarin had taught him to use his own body.

And partly because Kaian himself thought it was better.

It's the fastest and most efficient.

Most mages, however, used wands.

A wand was custom-made according to the distance between the user's wrist and elbow.

The feeling changed greatly depending on its material.

Wood?

Metal?

A combination of both?

If wood, then what kind?

Oak?

Paulownia?

Ash?

Ebony?

That employee's wand is willow.

The possible materials were almost endless.

But their purpose was generally the same.

They use it to stabilize mana control.

For Kaian, a wand was almost useless.

His left hand would be far more useful.

But I'd like to own a few staffs someday.

Unlike a wand, a staff wasn't meant to stabilize magic.

A staff existed to push a mage's powerful mana farther and harder.

That was why even obtaining the basic materials required enormous effort.

The mage had to personally find a mana stone capable of enduring their mana waves.

They also had to find a craftsman whose soul felt compatible with theirs.

That must take an unbelievable amount of time and money.

Kaian was about to sigh when the receptionist drew a semicircle in the air with her wand.

"[Gentle Veil, Be Polite.]"

A soft green light spread along the semicircle.

Shhhhh...

The light soon formed a hemisphere around the employee, Kaian, and Pett.

Kaian was impressed again.

This really is strange.

How can magic feel this natural?

Normally, when someone else used magic, there was an instinctive sense of danger.

That person's about to do something.

Or...

The mana around me is moving.

But Saint Dust employees were different.

I don't feel threatened at all.

The employee had pulled out a wand directly in front of Kaian.

She had spoken an incantation.

She had even visibly activated the isolation spell with bright green light.

Yet Kaian hadn't felt even a trace of caution.

When I really think about it, that's terrifying.

It wasn't a style of magic Kaian particularly liked.

I'd rather cast faster than my opponent can even notice something feels wrong...

Still, every Saint Dust employee used magic in this way.

As a private hotel, their policy was apparently to never make their guests uncomfortable.

That's probably why even drunken fights almost never happen here.

It really is a comfortable place to rest.

They didn't suppress people with force.

They calmed them with comfort.

It sounded simple.

Actually accomplishing it must've required enormous effort.

Who exactly owns this place?

The owner of the northern entrance remained surrounded in mystery.

The only thing anyone knew was that she was a "beautiful Madam."

Nothing else circulated as rumor.

If there aren't even rumors, that means she's controlling the rumors themselves.

Kaian sincerely hoped he'd never become involved with that mysterious Madam.

She was probably both an incredibly skilled mage and a terrifying businesswoman.

He had no desire to become part of the capital behind her success.

I'd be lucky if I only became capital.

If I became an obstacle, I'd probably disappear without anyone hearing a thing.

Kaian shivered.

The employee briefly checked his expression, then continued.

"People outside the [Gentle Veil] cannot see or hear us."

"Because perception interference magic is active, even anyone passing nearby won't think anything unusual is happening."

"If you aren't experiencing any discomfort, may we continue?"

Kaian smiled gently and nodded.

"Thank you."

The employee continued.

"Have you identified the client's true identity?"

"If you've only confirmed the impersonation but not the client's original identity, ⟨Saint Dust⟩ can assist with identification."

It was extremely polite.

Yet Pett immediately noticed the violence hidden beneath those words.

His face turned pale.

Identify me? How exactly are they going to identify me...?

Fortunately, Kaian already knew who Pett was.

Using [Quick Draw], he pulled out Marius's identification card and Pett's wanted poster.

Whoosh!

"The person who originally requested the transaction was Marius Sterling, the man shown on this identification card."

Kaian handed them over.

"But during the journey, I discovered that this man had changed his appearance using a magical tool."

He pointed to Pett.

"His real identity is the wanted criminal known as Sewer Rat Pett."

Kaian deliberately didn't mention the Artifact.

Later, Saint Dust or the Silvaris Federation might try to verify his testimony.

But with [Intention] magic placed on Pett, it would be difficult to uncover the full truth anyway.

The employee recorded the information in the crystal orb, then nodded.

"We will verify the truth of your statement and assist with ending the request."

"If no major issue is discovered, the request will automatically be terminated without requiring another visit."

"Please keep that in mind."

Then, even without Kaian asking, she brought up something he would likely need.

"If the client is confirmed to be a wanted criminal, he will need to be transferred to Silvaris."

"Would you like us to handle that process on your behalf?"

"Yes, please handle it."

Escorts working in Vernas Forest often had personal reasons for hiding their identities.

Because of that, they tended to avoid direct dealings with governments.

⟨Saint Dust⟩ handled such transactions for them.

That was known as transaction agency.

It was one of the northern entrance's main businesses.

Sometimes I end up paying fees twice because of it...

But what could he do?

The thirsty person had to dig the well.

"Your agency request has been registered."

The employee bowed according to an old Silvaris custom.

"Also, the fact that the exchange failed to properly verify the client's identity was clearly a mistake on the exchange's part."

"On behalf of all Vernas exchanges, we sincerely apologize."

Then she continued.

"If you wish, you may file a compensation claim against the exchange that arranged the request."

"⟨Saint Dust⟩ can handle that claim as well."

"Would you like us to proceed?"

Kaian was impressed by the smooth offer.

She had apologized on behalf of the exchanges...

Yet clearly stated that the original exchange had been responsible.

Then immediately used that fact to offer another paid service.

Their calculations really are precise.

Kaian shook his head.

"That's all right."

"I was there when the original request was accepted, and I didn't notice either."

"Thank you for your concern."

Kaian answered with as much courtesy as he could.

The employee seemed pleased by his politeness and smiled gently.

Only Pett's expression continued to grow stiffer by the second.

"Mister Kaian."

The employee spoke carefully.

"I apologize for asking, but do you know which exchange accepted the double contract?"

Apparently they intended to police their own members properly.

Whether the exchange had knowingly participated or not.

Hmm. I can't let this hurt F&F.

Kaian used [Quick Draw].

"Fortunately, it wasn't one of the Vernas exchanges."

He continued,

"It seems the request was accepted through these people."

Whoosh.

The next moment...

Kaian was holding the severed head of a dark elf whose dead eyes remained wide open.

The employee stared blankly at the head.

"..."

"..."

About two seconds of silence passed.

Then Kaian spoke again.

"What's the current market price for these guys?"

The employee instantly regained her composure and answered as naturally as ever.

"Regardless of whether they are captured alive or dead, the current rate is ten silver per individual."

"Would you like to add them to the agency transaction?"

"Yes, please."

"How many would you like to submit?"

At the employee's question, Kaian looked toward Pett.

Pett had never seen Kaian's eyes so cold.

There was open disgust in them.

Like Kaian was looking at an insect.

Pett, who had been horrified by how politely the two could speak with a severed dark elf head sitting between them, immediately remembered his situation.

He answered quickly.

"Forty-one...! No! Seventy-five!"

Kaian looked back at the employee.

"Apparently seventy-five."

"Thank you for confirming."

She opened a box decorated with a purple ribbon.

"Please place the items for the agency transaction in this box."

The box looked barely large enough to hold a single cake, let alone seventy-five severed dark elf heads.

But when the sack filled with heads was brought close...

The box stretched its opening wide and swallowed the entire sack in one gulp.

CHOMP!

Then it released a tiny fanfare and spat out confetti.

Pop! Pooooof!

Purple and gold confetti floated through the [Gentle Veil] before slowly melting away.

Kaian laughed at the small event.

"Haha. Has the cargo I brought also been inspected?"

"Yes. The inspection just finished."

"The horse and the high-quality tableware can be appraised and purchased."

"However, because the items were included in the original request, we recommend sharing the proceeds with F&F Exchange."

"Please exclude the horse from the transaction."

Kaian answered immediately.

"Only purchase the tableware. I'll contact F&F separately."

"Understood."

The employee paused.

"We also finished inspecting the items besides the tableware..."

This was the problem.

The mana crystals.

Items that legally couldn't be moved anywhere without government permission.

Just as Kaian expected, the employee continued.

"We can only proceed with the agency transaction for those items after you meet with Madam."

"Madam?"

For the first time, Kaian's brow slightly furrowed.

Madam was one of the mages he most wanted to avoid meeting.

"Do I really have to meet her?"

The employee looked apologetic.

"The items you've brought are unusually sensitive."

"The total settlement amount is also high."

"We will arrange your meeting with Madam as soon as possible..."

She checked something.

"One hour from now."

"Hmm..."

If it couldn't be avoided, Kaian preferred to get it over with quickly.

"Could I meet her right now?"

This time, the answer was firm even though the employee's smile remained gentle.

"I'm sorry, Mister Kaian."

"Your meeting with Madam will be available one hour from now."

Kaian swallowed a sigh.

If an employee known as one of Saint Dust's "smiling fairies" spoke this firmly...

There was essentially no room for negotiation.

I understand because the mana crystals are involved... but I still don't like it.

Noticing Kaian's mood darkening, the employee handed him a sheet of deep purple paper.

"This is the settlement estimate for ending the request and the agency transactions you've requested."

Rustle.

The rough paper contained neat golden writing.

"Because this is only a preliminary settlement, the final amount may differ slightly."

"However, we don't expect a large difference."

"Please keep that in mind."

Kaian stopped hearing her explanation.

He'd assumed that Pett's bounty, the money he'd taken from Pett, and the bounty on the dark elves would be more than enough to cover his academy tuition.

But Kaian had never been particularly good with numbers.

Calculating money is such a pain.

So he'd lazily decided to let ⟨Saint Dust⟩ handle the exact amount.

But now...

All of that adds up to this much...?

Kaian's heart began pounding as violently as it had when he'd heard Liana's Word Magic.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

D-don't tell me...

Am I rich now?
