Chapter 44

Chapter 44

"Seriously, learn to read the room. Can't you see everyone's busy?"

Someone's irritated voice echoed through the waiting room in front of the firmly closed gate.

This was the final stage of the B-rank promotion examination.

The practical dungeon evaluation.

The participants waiting for their turn looked both nervous and excited.

There was a reason for that.

This final examination wasn't only about passing.

Recruiters from major guilds were personally watching through the monitors.

If someone achieved an impressive record or demonstrated outstanding combat power here, they could immediately enter an elite career path involving contracts worth hundreds of millions of won.

Everyone gripped their weapons while thinking about how they could shorten their clear time by even a single second.

Chaeho sat quietly in the corner and tightened the Velcro on his gloves.

Unlike everyone around him, his expression remained as calm as a still lake.

He had absolutely no intention of joining some meaningless race for speed.

"Attention."

A staff member stepped onto the platform and activated the microphone.

The noisy room immediately became silent.

"The final practical evaluation will now begin."

"The location is a closed artificial dungeon whose environment is strictly controlled by the Hunter Association."

"The rules are simple. Enter your assigned zone, recover the target magic stone marked with your examinee number from deep inside the dungeon, and return to the extraction point before the time limit."

"The routes from each zone eventually connect inside, so you may encounter other candidates."

A large display behind him turned on.

A complicated map of the dungeon appeared.

"The dungeon contains monsters ranging from upper C-rank to lower B-rank."

"Your final B-rank promotion will be determined through the time required to recover the magic stone, your combat efficiency, and your response to unexpected situations."

The staff member emphasized the final point.

"I'll repeat this once more. This is not a speed competition. Prioritize your survival and safety above everything else."

A few participants yawned at the obvious warning.

Most were already memorizing the map and calculating the shortest possible route.

"Enter the gate corresponding to the zone assigned to you."

The heavy steel doors opened.

Around a dozen participants immediately launched themselves forward like predators finally released toward their prey.

Chaeho didn't rush.

He loosened his ankles, cracked his neck from side to side, and slowly walked toward the gate marked Zone Three.

Dark, damp air clung to his entire body.

The dungeon had been artificially created for safety purposes, but the thick smell of monsters and the moss underfoot made it feel almost identical to a real wild dungeon.

Rustle.

Gravel shifted beneath something in the darkness.

Three pairs of red eyes appeared.

C-rank monsters.

Black-Armored Boars.

Their bodies were covered in thick black bone armor that could easily deflect careless sword strikes.

GRRRR!

The largest one scraped the ground with its front hoof and charged.

Its acceleration was terrifying.

Its huge body filled the narrow tunnel.

An ordinary hunter might have frozen simply from the pressure.

Chaeho drew his sword.

But he didn't activate [Time Slow].

The world continued moving at its normal speed.

He stood completely still with both feet firmly planted on the ground until the boar's sharp horn nearly reached his chin.

He had spent years as a porter watching the attack patterns of low-level monsters from behind other hunters.

Once these creatures reached full speed in a straight-line charge, they couldn't easily change direction.

The moment its power reached its peak...

BANG!

The boar's horn pierced through Chaeho's afterimage and smashed directly into the dirt wall.

Chaeho had only needed one tiny diagonal step.

His wrist lightly turned.

Slice.

The cold edge of his sword slipped between the steel-like bone armor.

Straight into the narrow cartilage gap where the neck connected to the spine.

The monster didn't even manage a proper death cry.

Black blood sprayed from its body as it collapsed.

Turning his back on the first corpse, Chaeho lowered his body and rushed toward the remaining two.

Every flash of his blade was followed by another efficient movement.

The monsters' weak points were struck with pinpoint precision.

There was no unnecessary display of strength.

No flashy eruption of mana.

Only stabbing, cutting, and redirecting attacks.

Every motion worked together like parts of a perfectly built machine.

Chaeho flicked the blood from his blade, took one breath, and continued forward.

Not long afterward, he reached a three-way intersection.

He stopped.

Then crouched and carefully examined the ground.

Heavy footprints belonging to several people covered the paths straight ahead and to the left.

The left path, which was the shortcut, was especially messy.

The dirt had been deeply torn apart, and mud had splashed everywhere.

The distance between footprints was also abnormally wide.

Someone had clearly ignored the monsters and sprinted forward at tremendous speed.

Chaeho lightly brushed his fingers across the wall.

A thick residue of unpleasant mana clung to it.

He could also smell blood.

That meant there wasn't simply a small group of monsters farther inside.

There was probably a large cluster.

Or perhaps a dangerous trap.

It's definitely the shortest path, but with this much mana concentrated inside, the situation ahead is probably a complete mess.

Chaeho turned toward the rightmost tunnel.

It was a long detour that curved around before reaching the objective.

But the ground was calm.

The unpleasant traces of monster mana were also very faint.

It would take longer.

However, the route clearly reduced unnecessary stamina consumption and the risk of injury.

Chaeho was about to turn right without hesitation when three candidates from another group came running up behind him while breathing heavily.

"Hey! It's this way! I saw the map in the waiting room. The left path goes directly to the magic-stone altar!"

"Hurry! Looks like Group One and Group Two already went inside. We need to catch up if we want the guild scouts to notice us!"

They glanced at Chaeho and snorted.

"What are you doing? Lost? Keep standing around like that and you'll finish last."

"Forget him. He's probably scared and looking for some route without monsters."

Then one of them spoke impatiently.

"Let's go. If we fail to reach B-rank here, our guild signing bonuses will get cut in half."

The three hunters rushed past Chaeho and ran straight into the left shortcut, where the presence of monsters was thickest.

Their weapons were overflowing with mana.

They were even shouting excitedly as though victory were already guaranteed.

Watching their backs disappear, Chaeho clicked his tongue.

Running forward like that without checking anything will pull the aggro of every sleeping monster in the area. They're going to create one hell of a mess.

There was absolutely no reason for him to risk himself just to produce an impressive record for others.

His only reason for becoming a hunter was to provide his parents with a safe home and a peaceful life.

If he got injured or died while recklessly trying to impress some guild scout, only his family would be left suffering.

That was the coldest and firmest rule Chaeho followed inside dungeons.

He stepped into the right-hand detour without hesitation.

Just as expected, the route was long and dark.

Occasionally, spider-like monsters hanging from the ceiling launched surprise attacks.

Groups of Venom Goblins also appeared from hiding.

But none of them slowed Chaeho down.

He avoided acidic poison dropping from above with a narrow step.

Then, the instant a monster landed and lost its balance, he struck and ended its life.

Not once did he activate the miraculous skill that gave him more time to think.

The more Chaeho understood how absurdly powerful his ability was, the more brutally he trained himself to avoid relying on it.

No matter how clearly he could read the flow of a battle, it was meaningless if his body couldn't keep up.

He continued along the planned route, calmly eliminating every threat in his way.

Eventually, the air changed.

The damp smell of mold and blood faded.

In its place came a cool, clean flow of mana.

Chaeho turned the final corner.

At the center of a wide cavern, a softly glowing red target magic stone came into view.

This was the final area.

There were no monsters guarding the magic stone.

Judging from the mangled corpses scattered across the floor and the deep sword scars carved into the walls, someone from one of the groups who had taken the shortcut had already passed through and killed them.

The corpses were damaged so badly that their original shapes were difficult to recognize.

Whoever had fought them had dumped mana into the battle without restraint.

This is much easier than I expected.

Now all he had to do was collect the magic stone from the altar and return to the extraction point.

Then this long promotion examination would finally be over.

A B-rank Hunter License.

With that alone, he could move his parents into a new apartment and earn enough money that hospital bills and retirement would no longer be constant worries.

Compared to the days when he had carried other people's equipment through unstable low-level dungeons for almost nothing...

It felt unreal.

A faint smile appeared on Chaeho's face as he approached the altar.

Then...

RUMBLE!

The ground violently shook beneath his feet.

This wasn't the footstep of a monster.

Nor was it a small earthquake.

It was a heavy, destructive vibration powerful enough to shake the entire artificial dungeon.

Chaeho stopped.

Thick dust and chunks of stone rained from the ceiling.

Emergency lights scattered throughout the dungeon began flashing wildly.

"What the hell?"

The violent shaking continued.

Then a horrifying explosion assaulted his ears.

BOOOOOOM!

The sound of an enormous boulder shattering was followed by something unbelievably heavy repeatedly smashing through layers of walls.

The direction was obvious.

The left shortcut.

The same route the other candidates had rushed into in hopes of setting impressive records.

This wasn't a level of destruction that a few candidates fighting ordinary C-rank or lower B-rank monsters could create.

Something powerful enough to destroy the dungeon tunnels themselves was moving there.

Then...

BEEEEEEP!

A piercing mechanical alarm tore through the darkness.

It was the emergency rescue beacon provided by the Association.

Candidates had been told to use it only when facing a threat to their lives that they could no longer handle.

And there wasn't only one.

Red emergency signals flashed from several locations at once.

Desperate alarm sounds overlapped and echoed through the tunnels.

Someone screamed.

Then came the horrible sound of something being crushed.

Chaeho's eyes became cold.

The target magic stone that could end his long struggle was glowing quietly close enough for him to touch.

But his head had already turned toward the dark tunnel filled with violent vibrations and bloody noise.

"Fuck."

Chaeho tightly gripped the handle of his sword.
