Chapter 47

Chapter 47

A scream like the dying cry of a beast violently struck the narrow cavern.

The Black-Mane Ogre's legs were completely torn apart.

It had lost all reason.

Every time blood poured from its ruined knees, the creature transformed its pain into rage and swung its weapon wildly.

CRASH! BOOOOM!

The massive piece of steel smashed through the dirt walls and tore apart the ground.

Rock fragments exploded in every direction like shotgun pellets.

The monster's breathing became rough and metallic.

Its bloodshot eyes had lost focus.

Only one thought remained inside them.

Crush the human in front of it.

But Chaeho didn't retreat.

Instead, he tightened his grip on his sword in the middle of the dust and lowered his stance.

Its pattern is dead.

Extreme rage.

It gave the beast terrifying destructive power.

But at the same time, it made its movements obvious.

There were no more feints.

No defensive movements.

Only simple attacks meant to destroy everything within sight.

Chaeho watched the huge piece of steel rushing toward him through the dust.

He stopped breathing.

[Time Slow].

The world seemed to sink into thick liquid.

The blunt weapon tearing through the air approached in slow motion.

Chaeho let the horrifying mass pass directly in front of his face.

With only the smallest twist of his body, he slipped outside its path.

The resulting wind struck his face.

But his feet remained firmly planted.

He deactivated the skill.

Less than a second later...

He activated it again.

Slow.

Normal.

Slow.

Normal.

Repeatedly switching the skill on and off placed enormous strain on his mind.

But there was no better way to dissect every movement of the monster.

Inside the slowed world, the ogre's body was revealed piece by piece.

Its chest muscles were swollen enough to burst.

Its torn knees trembled as they struggled to support its weight.

And covering the outer surface of its skin was a faint but dense layer of energy.

There.

Chaeho's gaze moved beneath the ogre's armpit.

Every time it raised both arms for a large attack, dense mana swirled around that area before spreading throughout its body.

That was the central point maintaining its abnormally tough hide and defensive power.

The sword hadn't been failing simply because the creature's skin was tough.

Mana flowing from that point covered its body like invisible armor.

The monitoring room had fallen completely silent.

The situation in Zone Three shown on the main screen looked like hell itself.

Dust filled the screen.

Fragments of rock exploded everywhere.

Attacks powerful enough to completely destroy a person continued without pause.

Yet Chaeho, standing in the middle of it all, was unbelievably unharmed.

"Is he insane? He's avoiding all of that?"

One staff member muttered while leaning toward the screen.

It was exactly as he said.

Chaeho wasn't running.

Instead, he repeatedly slipped dangerously close to the monster, avoiding its attacks by the width of a sheet of paper.

He lowered his body to avoid horizontal swings.

He twisted his ankle and redirected his body away from downward strikes.

There wasn't a single wasted movement.

It almost looked like he and the monster had practiced this dance together hundreds of times.

"That's B-rank! Not some C-rank monster, but a mutated B-rank! How can anyone have reflexes like that? Even an A-rank hunter specialized in agility couldn't move like that!"

The control-room supervisor grabbed his head.

What they were witnessing was directly destroying everything the Hunter Association considered common sense.

A candidate whose history included D-rank was standing directly against a berserk B-rank monster.

"Evaluator Moon! Shouldn't we intervene? If he makes even one mistake, he's going to die instantly!"

The supervisor urgently turned toward Moon Gihyeok.

Moon Gihyeok didn't answer.

His arms remained crossed while his gaze stayed fixed on Chaeho's feet.

A deep crease formed between his eyebrows.

Those aren't reflexes.

This isn't something reflexes alone could solve.

Moon Gihyeok had fought countless real battles.

He could see what was happening.

Chaeho wasn't waiting to see the monster's attack before moving.

Before its arm even rose, he was reading tiny signs such as the expansion of its muscles and the shift in its center of gravity.

Then he moved first.

And he wasn't escaping completely outside the monster's attack range.

He was maintaining the perfect distance for a counterattack while steadily draining the monster's stamina.

"Keep the rescue team approaching."

Moon Gihyeok's voice sounded rough.

"But don't shout at him through the speakers right now."

"What? But according to regulations..."

"He's not only defending."

Moon Gihyeok narrowed his eyes.

"He's setting bait."

The staff turned toward the screen again with blank expressions.

On the display, Chaeho suddenly lowered his sword and stepped directly in front of the ogre.

He deliberately exposed an opening as though provoking it.

Moon Gihyeok clenched his fist.

"He's going for the finish."

"GRRAAAAAAA!"

A roar mixed with blood burst from the ogre's mouth.

The insect-like human had stepped directly in front of it without fear.

The monster's remaining patience disappeared.

Forgetting the pain in its legs, it raised both arms high above its head.

The massive steel weapon rose until it nearly touched the ceiling.

Every muscle in its body expanded grotesquely.

The mana surrounding its body gathered violently at the tip of the weapon.

The monster intended to crush both Chaeho and the ground beneath him with a single strike.

A faint smile appeared on Chaeho's lips.

It took the bait.

He had deliberately offered himself to draw out the monster's largest possible attack.

The ogre had reacted exactly as Chaeho wanted.

The massive steel weapon began falling with the force of gravity.

Chaeho didn't retreat too soon.

He waited.

He waited until the monster committed to the downward strike and could no longer change its trajectory significantly.

The weapon was still above his head when...

[Time Slow].

The world slowed again.

Chaeho kicked low against the ground and launched himself diagonally.

BOOM!

Even inside the slowed world, the impact sounded powerful enough to tear apart his eardrums.

The steel weapon smashed into the spot where Chaeho had been standing and created a massive crater.

The shockwave rushed outward like a tidal wave.

But Chaeho had already slipped into the blind spot on the monster's right.

Immediately after releasing its strongest downward strike...

Its upper body was leaning heavily forward.

Both arms holding the steel pillar were stretched downward and temporarily stiff.

And beneath its right armpit...

The mana concentration point Chaeho had repeatedly observed through [Time Slow] was completely exposed.

The mana that should have protected its entire body had been drawn toward the massive attack.

Its defensive layer was thin.

Chaeho deactivated the skill.

At the same instant, the muscles in his lower body exploded with power.

The force from the ground traveled through his waist.

Then his shoulder.

Then into the very tip of his sword.

THUNK!

A dull tearing sound rang out.

The sword that had repeatedly failed to pierce the creature's tough skin finally sank deep beneath its armpit.

"GRRAAAAAAGH!"

The ogre's body bent backward like a bow.

A horrible scream burst from its throat.

Through the sword, Chaeho clearly felt the mana defense surrounding the monster's body shatter like glass.

The core of its defense had been broken.

Now it was nothing more than a huge beast with thick skin.

Chaeho violently pulled his sword free and immediately pushed off the ground again.

He didn't miss the brief opening created as the monster staggered in agony.

Lowering his body, Chaeho rotated and then launched himself into the air.

The ogre's thick neck filled his vision.

The blood-filled artery.

No mana protection remained around it.

SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!

One leap.

Three consecutive slashes, so fast and sharp they were difficult to follow with the naked eye.

Silver lines tore across the monster's throat.

"Grrrk... kh."

The ogre's roar transformed into a strange choking sound.

Bright red blood and mana poured like a waterfall from the severed artery.

The creature desperately reached into the air.

But the strength inside its body was already gone.

BOOOOOOM!

The mountain-like body finally fell to its knees and crashed into the ground.

The heavy vibrations stopped.

Only the eerie sound of settling dust remained inside the cavern.

"Haa... haa..."

Chaeho landed and lowered his sword as he breathed heavily.

Sweat ran from his forehead and dropped from his jaw.

The muscles in his thighs and calves screamed.

His heart pounded as though it might burst.

Yet his eyes remained clear and calm.

He quietly stared at the unmoving corpse of the ogre and took a moment to control his breathing.

I still have some time left.

The daily limit of his skill.

Because he had used [Time Slow] only in short bursts when absolutely necessary, there was still some time remaining.

Even after defeating an irregular opponent like a mutated B-rank monster alone, Chaeho hadn't used every card in his hand.

He slowly loosened his tight grip around the sword.

His gaze moved toward the faint glow of a magic stone deep inside the ogre's body.

He had already stopped thinking about the promotion examination.

He had rushed here to save people and somehow ended up killing a mutated B-rank monster.

He had no idea what that would mean for the result of the evaluation.

Chaeho brushed the dust from his clothes and walked toward the corpse.

"I should collect it first."

He looked at the huge body.

"It's basically a pile of money."

With that calm remark, the tip of his sword moved toward the ogre's hide.
