Chapter 52

Chapter 52

A disgusting smell stabbed at their noses the entire time they climbed through the narrow, steep gap between the cliffs.

It smelled like old blood mixed with animal waste.

The smell was completely different from the dry earth near the dungeon entrance.

"Wow, breathing here is awful. This area smells especially bad."

Jo Mingyu, who was following from behind, pinched his nose and frowned deeply.

Irritated, he kicked a small stone lying on the ground.

"Everyone stay alert."

Park Junhyeok tightened his grip on his shield.

"Watch your footing too. The rougher the terrain gets, the more ambush points these things have."

He was right.

The middle section of Blackstone Gorge had extremely troublesome terrain.

The path was only wide enough for two or three people to barely walk shoulder to shoulder.

Huge strange rock formations surrounded them, blocking visibility in awkward and unnatural ways.

If anyone lost concentration or broke formation, the party could collapse almost instantly.

Chaeho continued walking while carefully examining the deep shadows between the rocks.

Thanks to his new special-fiber boots, his footsteps were nearly silent.

But the cramped, suffocating atmosphere of the narrow path continued scraping against his nerves.

Then...

Rustle.

A tiny sound came from above.

Small stones were falling from a sharply cut ridge.

"Above us!"

The moment Park Junhyeok shouted, two enormous black shadows tore through the air and dropped toward them.

Black-Armored Wolves.

The same monsters they had encountered near the entrance.

Their red eyes shone as they threw themselves directly toward the front of the formation.

BANG! BOOOOM!

Park Junhyeok shouted and immediately raised his enormous shield.

He directly absorbed the mass of both charging wolves and blocked their path.

The tremendous impact cracked the rock beneath his feet.

Fragments scattered.

"Urgh! These things are much bigger than the ones near the entrance!"

Veins bulged in Park Junhyeok's neck as he gritted his teeth.

The two wolves alternated their attacks, slamming their heavy front paws into the shield over and over.

The sound of metal bending echoed violently between the canyon walls.

"I'll support you!"

Lee Soyeon urgently raised her staff.

Seo Eunbyeol also began creating a faintly glowing mana barrier around the party.

At that exact moment...

Rustle.

On the party's most vulnerable right side, beyond Lee Soyeon and Seo Eunbyeol's field of vision...

One of the large rocks pressed against the cliff wall moved unnaturally.

Its texture and color were identical to the surrounding stone.

But it wasn't a rock.

It was a massive Rock Lizard.

Its yellow eyes narrowed vertically and flashed.

The monster kicked powerfully off the wall and launched itself through the air with unnatural elasticity.

Its target was Jo Mingyu, who stood at the end of the formation, hidden from Park Junhyeok's defensive line.

Its thick tail, as hard as a stone pillar, tore violently through the air toward Jo Mingyu's upper body.

"Huh...?"

Jo Mingyu noticed the danger late and instinctively tried to raise his bow.

Far too late.

His face instantly turned pale as the massive tail filled his entire vision.

Park Junhyeok couldn't even turn his head.

He was still struggling to hold back the weight of two wolves from the front.

There was no time to dodge.

No one was in position to block it.

At that moment, rather than recklessly charging toward the monster's throat, Chaeho quietly inhaled.

His eyes became calm.

The skill activated.

[Time Slow].

The gears of the world seemed to grind as though forced to stop.

The sounds of air being torn apart and the growls of monsters stretched out as though heard underwater.

Everything moved at an extreme crawl.

Inside that slowed world, Chaeho clearly saw the Rock Lizard's tail advancing centimeter by centimeter toward Jo Mingyu's face.

He could even see the sharp rocky protrusions covering its surface.

And that wasn't all.

One of the wolves attacking Park Junhyeok's shield had begun shifting its weight backward.

It seemed to have noticed that the side defense had been broken.

Its gaze was fixed above Park Junhyeok's head.

It was pretending to continue attacking the shield while preparing to jump over the front line and strike the rear directly.

The wolves draw attention while the camouflaged monster attacks the blind spot.

This was the vicious coordination B-rank monsters displayed instinctively.

They weren't simply fighting independently with their own strength.

They used each other's movements as bait to create fatal openings.

Chaeho finished his judgment quickly inside the nearly frozen world.

There was no value in showing off by rushing forward and cutting down an enemy first.

The most urgent variable he had to eliminate was the death of a party member, which could destabilize the entire formation.

Immediately after planning his movement with accelerated thought, Chaeho deactivated [Time Slow].

Then his legs kicked off the ground.

Tap!

His new lightweight equipment pushed his body forward like a feather.

With his old steel boots, he would have reacted half a beat too slowly.

Following the short route he had already planned, Chaeho moved directly in front of Jo Mingyu.

He gripped his new one-handed sword firmly in a reverse grip.

Then he struck the side of the Rock Lizard's incoming tail at precisely the right angle.

CLAAAAANG!

A sharp sound rang out like steel colliding with stone.

Chaeho didn't try to overpower the tail's enormous kinetic force head-on.

Instead, he lightly struck the side of its path with his blade, twisting its direction away.

The tail that would have shattered Jo Mingyu's ribs swept through empty air and smashed into the nearby cliff wall.

CRASH!

Rock fragments exploded everywhere.

The missed attack caused the Rock Lizard's body to float helplessly in the air from the recoil.

But Chaeho didn't follow up against it.

That threat had already been neutralized.

He immediately lowered his body and changed direction.

His cold gaze was already fixed on the Black-Armored Wolf attempting to jump over Park Junhyeok's head.

The exact moment the wolf stepped onto the upper edge of the large shield and leaped into the air...

Chaeho had already predicted where it would land.

He was standing there before the monster even arrived.

It almost looked as if the beast had willingly thrown itself onto the tip of his sword.

SLASH.

Chaeho's blade entered beneath the wolf's chin.

The only soft gap not protected by the black armor.

The sword slipped past the bone and went directly toward the brain.

"YELP!"

With a short, deflating cry, the wolf collapsed at Chaeho's feet.

Only two simple trajectories.

Not a single unnecessary movement.

Saving the life of the rear-line hunter and then seeing through the enemy's clever attack pattern had taken only a few seconds.

"Mr. Jo Mingyu. Finish the lizard."

Chaeho's calm voice snapped Jo Mingyu back to reality.

"It's falling."

"A-Ah! Yes! Yes!"

Jo Mingyu hurriedly drew his bowstring back to his ear.

Three arrows struck the forehead of the Rock Lizard, which had fallen awkwardly onto the ground.

Lee Soyeon's magic crashed down like lightning immediately afterward.

The Rock Lizard died before it could even properly scream.

The remaining wolf at the front also looked confused after losing its partner.

Park Junhyeok didn't miss the opportunity.

He aggressively pushed forward with his shield.

While Seo Eunbyeol blocked the monster's vision with mana, they quickly finished it off.

The battle in the middle section of the gorge finally ended.

The ground was covered with bloody monster corpses and broken pieces of rock.

"Hoo..."

Park Junhyeok lowered his dented shield to the ground and breathed heavily.

His forehead and neck were soaked in cold sweat.

After catching his breath, he stared at Chaeho as though he still couldn't believe what had just happened.

"Hunter Lee Chaeho. That just now..."

He couldn't immediately finish his sentence.

Chaeho's movements had been far beyond what one would expect from a hunter who had only recently reached B-rank.

He hadn't become obsessed with cutting down the enemy directly in front of him.

Instead, he had read the openings across the entire party and the enemy's attack order at the same time.

Then he had intervened at exactly the right moment.

Even among veteran B-rank hunters with countless battles behind them, very few could make judgments and plan movement like that.

"Damn, I seriously thought I was dead! My heart almost jumped out of my chest!"

Jo Mingyu dropped to the ground as though his legs had lost all strength.

Fear was still thick in his voice.

"Hunter Lee Chaeho! Seriously, seriously, thank you!"

He repeatedly bowed.

"If you hadn't been there, my head would've flown off like that rock!"

Lee Soyeon also joined in while gripping her staff tightly with a pale face.

"I didn't even realize that lizard was hiding there. All of my attention was on the wolves."

She stared at Chaeho.

"How did you even notice all of that?"

Chaeho lightly flicked the sticky blood from his sword and shrugged.

"I was lucky."

The party stared at him.

"The shadow around that rock happened to move strangely. And I saw the wolf twisting the muscles in its legs while preparing to jump behind the shield."

Chaeho explained it calmly.

The others could only stare in disbelief.

He had just said that during such a chaotic battle, he had noticed tiny changes in a shadow and even the contraction of a monster's muscles.

"Hunter Lee Chaeho."

Park Junhyeok adjusted his heavy shield and spoke more seriously.

"This is our first time fighting together today, but I'm honestly surprised."

He looked directly at Chaeho.

"Are you really a rookie? This isn't the tempo of any ordinary B-rank hunter I know."

Chaeho glanced down at his special-fiber boots.

"The new equipment helped a lot. I spent too much money on it."

It was a convenient excuse.

But it wasn't completely false.

The reason his body had been able to follow the short opening his eyes had seen was indeed because of the lightweight equipment and the brutal lower-body training he had repeated.

Park Junhyeok gave an incredulous laugh.

"You're seriously too modest."

Then his expression became more relaxed.

"Anyway, you saved us. From now on, I don't think we'll have to worry much about the formation breaking."

He tapped his shield.

"I'll stand in front and take the hits like an idiot. You keep attacking the openings like you just did."

Chaeho lightly nodded.

He had also gained valuable information from this battle.

Even inside the suffocating speed of B-rank combat, if his judgment and physical control could keep up, he could manage the party's overall danger.

There was no need to force [Time Slow] to remain active for long or solve everything alone.

"All right. If nobody's hurt, collect the magic stones and let's continue."

Park Junhyeok looked around.

"The terrain gets rougher ahead. Keep the formation a little tighter than before."

The party members spread out and began skillfully dismantling the monster corpses.

Jo Mingyu was still rubbing his chest while carefully cutting apart the Rock Lizard's hide with a dagger.

Chaeho quietly returned his sword to its sheath.

A damp wind from deeper inside the dungeon brushed past his face.

The rest of the path could be handled the same way.

Read it.

Don't get greedy.

Move precisely.

His footsteps became slightly lighter as he continued toward the next gap in the rocks.
