Chapter 87

Chapter 87, Association President, Dorothy (2)

They were people we had definitely killed once already.

We had burned them so thoroughly that there hadn't even been any need to confirm the kills.

I could roughly guess how they were now standing perfectly fine on two feet in front of us.

They must have used some kind of Mystery.

I didn't know whether they had truly resurrected or whether they were just illusions, but even if they had come back to life, it wasn't all that surprising.

Though resurrection seemed more likely.

In a world where invincibility-type Mysteries and death-regression Mysteries existed, there was no way resurrection-type Mysteries didn't.

I tried to take Lucy out to figure out how they had revived.

In the end, I couldn't.

Whoosh!

A thin blue line grazed the back of the hand I had slipped into my clothes.

A burning pain flared, and blood trickled down my wrist.

“Trying to gather information with a detection-type Mystery and counter me! Good idea, but did you think I'd just let you do that?”

Dorothy laughed and stabbed her staff into the air as though dotting a point.

At the same time, a blue line was drawn along the path of the staff.

The range of the attack itself was small, but its power was extremely threatening.

I couldn't even guess how strong its penetration was.

Seeing it slice through the marble floor as easily as tofu told me I definitely didn't want to take a direct hit.

A dangerous ranged attack coming from far away.

If we wanted to stop it, we'd have to somehow close the distance.

But there was almost no delay between attacks, so merely dodging was already difficult.

Countless blue lines rained toward us.

We couldn't keep dodging forever.

I was also worried about our stamina, and about the Demon Worshipers doing something suspicious in the distance.

We needed to turn the situation around.

I exchanged a glance with Lee Yeonhee beside me, then bent my knees.

My right hand touched the ground.

Sticky flames flowed down my hand, spread across the floor, and extended in every direction.

Crack!

Dorothy didn't miss the opening and attacked, but Arlin's defensive magic blocked it.

The barrier shattered with the sound of breaking glass.

Blocking a single attack was enough for me.

I began moving the flames that had seeped through the ground.

Rumble...

The earth shook.

At the same time, pillars of fire erupted one after another from all over, rising as if they would pierce the sky.

But that alone couldn't deal meaningful damage.

Dorothy used some mysterious method to avoid harm, and among the roughly ten Demon Worshipers, only one died from the attack.

That was fine.

I hadn't expected much from this strike in the first place.

I only wanted a small opening.

And the situation flowed exactly as I wanted.

The moment Dorothy and the Demon Worshipers focused their attention on me, Lee Yeonhee spread her wings.

She kicked off the ground and shot into the sky in an instant.

Normally, the ceiling would have blocked her.

But the pillars of fire had already punched holes all over it.

Lee Yeonhee flew through one of those holes and left the exhibition hall, ascending into the blue sky.

Her figure was wrapped in such brilliant light that I could barely see her.

The same was true for our enemies.

Dorothy swung her staff toward the sky, but not a single blue line reached Lee Yeonhee.

“...How annoying.”

They didn't just fail to hit her.

They couldn't even graze her.

The light was too intense for Dorothy to properly aim.

In the end, she gave up on Lee Yeonhee and began targeting us again.

Dorothy's attention shifted from Lee Yeonhee back to us.

That was her mistake.

Fwooom!

A massive spear of light shot down from far above, leaving a thin glowing trail behind it.

It was so bright and radiant that it looked as though someone had carved the sun itself into the shape of a spear.

Like heavenly judgment, it struck Dorothy.

Perhaps because the attack had been completely unexpected, Dorothy was pierced through without offering any meaningful resistance.

Her mouth opened soundlessly.

Then the spear exploded in a burst of light.

Dorothy's body was torn apart.

Pieces of flesh flew through the air in wide arcs like baseballs thrown with full force.

Even while watching her corpse scatter, we shifted our attention toward the Demon Worshipers.

They were holding their dark red books open and muttering something.

I didn't know whether Dorothy had actually died from that attack, but at the very least, we had gained an opening.

I immediately opened Lucy and searched for the Mystery that could have resurrected them.

There were two recently added resurrection-type Mysteries.

[Scq207, Doll That Dies in Your Place]

[Upon death, one part of the doll is consumed and you revive.

The doll has six total parts, the face, two arms, two legs, and torso.]

[Scq802, Dream Fragment of the Dreamer, Revival]

[One of the fragments of a shattered dream belonging to a certain dreamer.

It is one of the three dreams the dreamer desperately wished for, and this fragment contains the dream of revival.

When used, it revives those who have not been dead for long.]

One could only be used by a single person.

The other could revive several people.

Naturally, the second one seemed to be what had revived the Demon Worshipers.

Dream Fragment of the Dreamer.

This was already the second one I'd seen.

The previous one had been Immortality.

This one was Revival.

For some reason, I felt like I would end up seeing the final piece someday too.

For now, I told my companions how the Demon Worshipers had been revived, then checked the information on Doll That Dies in Your Place.

A Mystery that provided six spare lives.

This one was probably being used by Dorothy.

Six lives.

Then did that mean she had around three left?

Probably not.

She had been swallowed head-on by my flames twice already, but according to my instincts, neither attack had dealt serious damage to her.

The only time I was certain she had actually died in front of me was when Lee Yeonhee's spear of light pierced her.

My senses, sharpened by the Runestone, told me so.

“Looks like she has a Mystery related to fire resistance. There happens to be one resistance-type Mystery newly added to Lucy... Let's change our fighting style from now on.”

I explained the information I had gained from Lucy to my companions while taking out Fragment of Faith.

If fire couldn't damage her, then I would attack her another way.

But before that, we needed to clear out the troublesome ones.

The Demon Worshipers had been doing something for a while now, and it was beginning to feel ominous.

I held Fragment of Faith in my left hand and swung my empty right hand, releasing flames toward them.

Arlin created lightning and fired it.

From the sky, spears of light fell again in succession.

The Demon Worshipers died without much resistance.

But we remained tense.

Turbid darkness began rising from where they had fallen.

The darkness churned like clay being molded into shape, gradually forming a human figure.

Color entered the pitch-black humanoid darkness.

What emerged were the forms of the Demon Worshipers who had just died.

I opened Lucy, but no new Mystery had been added.

That meant one of two things.

Either this phenomenon wasn't caused by a Mystery.

Or it was caused by a Mystery already registered in Lucy, one that I simply hadn't found yet.

“Ooh...! O Demon...! We are deeply honored that you have personally descended in answer to our call...!”

The revived worshipers looked over their own bodies, then dropped to their knees before the writhing darkness.

The darkness bubbled like boiling water and gradually deepened in color.

What had been closer to gray turned into pure black.

Around then, a new Mystery was added to Lucy.

[Scq966, 72 Demons]

My heart, which had been pounding ever since I first saw the darkness rising from the ground, now beat as though it would smash through my chest and burst free.

A cold shiver brushed across my entire body.

The excitement of battle was swallowed by tension.

My fighting spirit was buried beneath fear.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and used Fragment of Faith to cut away my own fear.

Then, with my mind slightly calmer, I stared at the darkness.

The writhing darkness swallowed Arlin's lightning and brushed aside the spear Lee Yeonhee threw.

It gradually began taking shape.

And when the darkness finally formed completely, it became a woman clothed in sticky blackness.

White hair.

White eyebrows.

White skin.

Like Seolhwa, she was a beautiful woman whose entire body was pure white.

Her long, closed eyelashes twitched several times before slowly opening.

Cloudy pupils appeared between them.

“I am Astaroth. An ancient being who knows every secret in the world, the twenty-ninth among the Seventy-Two Demons.”

It, or rather, she introduced herself in a completely emotionless tone.

Then her eyes moved toward the Demon Worshipers.

All she did was meet their gazes.

Yet the Demon Worshipers nearly fainted from joy and slammed their heads against the ground.

Even when blood flowed and their foreheads split open, they struck their heads against the floor again and again.

Astaroth looked over them with emotionless eyes that seemed almost colorless.

Then her gaze shifted toward us.

Her eyes were pointed at us, but her cloudy pupils seemed to be looking at something beyond us.

Her voice flowed out.

Astaroth had called herself a being who knew every secret in the world.

As though proving that claim wasn't an exaggeration, she looked at each of us one by one and spoke our secrets aloud.

Arlin was the first.

“You are the cherished favorite of the Blue Magic Tower Master.”

Next was Hwa-ryeon.

“And you have a master you cannot be proud of.”

Then Lee Yeonhee.

“Your relationship with your family is not very good.”

Every one of them reacted violently, as though something they desperately wanted hidden had been exposed.

Arlin's eyes shook.

Hwa-ryeon clenched her teeth.

Lee Yeonhee was still in the sky, so I couldn't see her reaction, but she probably wasn't unaffected either.

Astaroth had casually exposed secrets they had hidden, secrets they didn't want revealed.

Then her gaze finally turned toward me.

I couldn't help becoming tense.

What secret would she see in me?

Reincarnation?

My family relationships?

Memories from my previous life?

Under my tension, her gaze gradually became clearer.

And then.

“Regression, Possession, Reincarnation Gallery... True Immortal...? Cthulhu...? ...Ah. Aaaaaaaagh!”

The next moment, with a scream, the darkness maintaining her form melted like water and seeped into the ground.
