Chapter 52

Chapter 52

Belvar was the happiest when Yohan told them they had secured a base close to their destination.

“See? My instincts never fail me! Hahaha!”

“You just got lucky, old man.”

“Lucky?! Nonsense! It was instinct! Instinct!”

The dwarf soldiers had spent years fighting inside the Underground City’s Burrow Well.

If they could not accomplish at least this much, it would hurt their pride.

That was the meaning behind Belvar’s celebration.

And since things had worked out well, nobody except Danforth bothered arguing with him.

The only useful items left in the warehouse were several kinds of alcohol and grain.

The previous owners seemed to have taken everything else.

Still, something was better than nothing.

The expedition stored the newly found supplies alongside everything they had carried with them.

The commanders then ordered everyone except the guards to rest.

Yohan did not object.

While the others rested, Yohan stood near the entrance and spoke with Belvar and Kalkerak.

“Our strategy will depend on how much power the ruler of this place, the ‘Hibernator of Devermos,’ currently possesses.”

“Until we understand the situation completely, we should move quietly. A direct confrontation would be dangerous.”

“Agreed. That thing has been active since the Four Great Powers first entered the Dungeon.”

Yohan nodded.

“And the Derhai enslaved by it are extremely troublesome. Especially if one of them has already become an Apostle...”

“...If one has?”

“Half of you will probably die.”

Naturally, Yohan did not include himself in that half.

That was extremely like him.

Yohan glanced at the exhausted expedition members and thought for a moment.

They had somehow made it all the way to the thirteenth floor.

They certainly had not reached this place through their own strength alone.

Still, it would be unfair to say they had done nothing.

Several had even played major roles during earlier battles.

Enough for Yohan to remember their names.

Either way, he needed to preserve as much fighting strength as possible.

His first destination was the thirty-sixth floor.

No matter how many people he had, it would never feel like enough.

Starting from the thirteenth floor, defeating an Apostle alone became almost impossible.

At the very least, he would need others supporting him.

Everyone needed to perform their own role properly.

“Well... it’s not all bad news.”

Yohan pointed downward.

“The Hibernator is located underground, closer to the fourteenth floor than the thirteenth. If we defeat its Apostle, free the Derhai from its control, and obtain authority to open the gate, we can completely skip the fourteenth floor.”

“...That’s true.”

Now it was time to investigate again.

“Finding the entrance this easily doesn’t mean we can relax. Devermos is a large district. The Derhai aren’t the only ones living there, so outsiders walking around won’t immediately look suspicious. Even so, move carefully.”

Yohan raised three fingers.

There were three major things they needed to confirm.

First.

Whether Bulsum, the Hibernator of Devermos, had entered hibernation.

“Its hibernation cycle is at least eight hundred years long, so the chances are low. Still, we need to confirm it.”

Second.

Whether Bulsum’s Apostle had obtained the authority of immortality.

“Bulsum is a Great Old One capable of handing out that authority fairly freely, so the probability is high. If the Apostle isn’t immortal, our chances improve dramatically.”

Third.

What weapons Bulsum’s slave soldiers possessed.

“If they’ve moved beyond the age of cold weapons, our chances of victory drop below fifty percent.”

“If not cold weapons... do you mean firearms?”

“There weren’t many signs of them last time, but quite a lot of time has passed since then. We’ll check first.”

“Wait. When exactly was your last visit?”

“Ten years ago.”

“......”

Belvar had no words.

General Kalkerak lightly patted him on the shoulder.

“We’ll begin investigating tomorrow. Nobody moves alone. Groups of three should be good.”

Once the information was shared and the groups organized, everyone returned to resting.

The following morning, roughly one hundred investigation teams spread throughout Devermos.

Three full days passed after the investigation began.

“What about somewhere closer to the center?”

“You mean the fountain plaza?”

“Yeah. It feels like the sort of place where something could be hidden.”

“Um... how much longer do I need to keep watching?”

“Thirty more minutes.”

“Captain, I’m seriously going to run out of mana!”

Team 44 consisted of Danforth, Frank, and Dexter.

Their first task was understanding Devermos’s geography.

They befriended the human owner of a grocery store and gathered detailed information about the district’s layout.

Then they compared it with a map of the Underground City and continued forming theories.

They had observed twenty different locations in total, hoping to identify the dwelling of the Great Old One.

Unfortunately, they had achieved nothing.

As they moved toward the manhole leading back to the Burrow Well, Dexter wiped sweat from his forehead.

“But seriously... wouldn’t it be faster to search from inside the Burrow Well? It’s much deeper than this place.”

“They wouldn’t hide it that carelessly. They might connect the middle using a gate only they can access. Or the passage might have nothing to do with the sewer at all. Maybe both.”

“...Then how are we supposed to find it?”

“Hey. Did you already forget what you’ve been doing since yesterday?”

Danforth folded his fingers one by one.

“We heard how that thing creates slaves before leaving, remember? Someone has to visit its dwelling before they can be enslaved. If we keep observing the whole district, sooner or later we’ll identify somewhere the Derhai visit suspiciously often. Right?”

“But... we still haven’t found a single suspicious location.”

“You’ve only been watching for two days. Stop complaining.”

Danforth grinned.

“We’re just getting started, Observer Dexter Boyle. We might be searching for a month if necessary. Stay focused.”

“...Would you believe me if I said I suddenly don’t want to do this anymore?”

“Shut up and keep looking if you don’t want to die.”

“Yes, sir.”

The other teams were equally busy.

Some focused on identifying the key strategic situation.

Others studied the overall atmosphere of the city.

Several searched for trustworthy allies or useful clues.

At that same time, Yohan was alone at the southern end of the Burrow Well.

His goals were searching for remains and investigating the sea.

On the twelfth floor, he had only performed a simplified search in Zul-ba-Sair.

From the Underground City onward, there was no need for that.

[By the way, if we follow the original plan, we won’t be able to check whether there are remains on the fourteenth floor, right? We’re skipping it completely.]

It can’t be helped.

[Hmm... what if we miss an important clue because of that?]

If I let every unlucky possibility control me, I’ll never accomplish anything. First, we reach the thirty-sixth floor. I’ll worry about the areas we skipped afterward. We can investigate them on the way back up.

[Well... that isn’t wrong. Though I’m not sure whether you’ll reach the thirty-sixth floor with those idiots. Hehehehe.]

Yohan had already searched most of the thirteenth floor, focusing heavily on the Burrow Well.

Now only the Nameless Sea remained.

The magical beasts that had crowded around him earlier had already lost their courage against his overwhelming strength and scattered.

“......”

Beyond the enormous moss-covered stone passage, waves gently rolled.

Yohan gathered the cores of the beasts he had killed earlier and quietly began working.

The closer he approached the sea, the brighter the cores glowed.

The ones who had stolen this sea’s name were none other than the Deep Ones.

That was their specialty.

They drove away existing divine beings and replaced their names with their own.

By doing so, they expanded their influence.

The same reason they had flaunted their influence over the lakes and seas of the Dark Caves.

They must want to create the idea that Sea = Dagon.

Old memories slowly surfaced in Yohan’s mind.

Long ago, this place had been called the Sea of Pontus.

Back then, several divine beings, including Bulsum, competed for control over the thirteenth floor.

Pontus and Dagon had been among them.

Bulsum fielded slave soldiers.

Pontus commanded sea spirits.

Dagon led the Deep Ones.

In the end, Bulsum claimed overall victory.

But Dagon effectively defeated Pontus as well, forcing him to retreat toward Innsmouth.

The sea escaped Pontus’s control but never fell completely under Dagon either.

From that point onward, it had no true name.

Residents originally called it the ‘Unnamed’ Sea to remember what happened.

As time passed, that title became the actual name.

Yohan was probably the only conqueror still alive who knew the full history.

Back then, Yohan had been attempting his very first expedition.

He had practically been a kid.

A reckless fool.

No other words described his younger self better.

He had been overwhelmed by joy at seeing a world he had watched for so long come to life.

Thousands of comrades stood beside him.

Terrifying yet magnificent divine beings appeared.

Apostles served them.

His excitement over victory had been so overwhelming that even his fear of death had disappeared.

Real despair only began during the fourth expedition.

Members of the Four Great Powers whom he had grown close to slowly disappeared one after another.

The Dungeon was far more cruel and vicious than anything Yohan had imagined.

The once-lively mood among the expedition faded rapidly.

The bright faces of his comrades became weighed down by worry.

Even then, Yohan still had hope.

The six other Players who had been dragged into this world alongside him remained at his side.

Later, the world would praise them as the ‘Seven Miracles.’

Yet the end of that grand journey had been miserable.

By the end of the ninth expedition, every one of them had died.

Only Yohan remained.

That was when optimism and hope truly began disappearing from his heart.

Elise died.

Joshua disappeared.

Noah disappeared.

Then Elias, Baldwin, and Sibylla died as well.

Only then did Yohan finally cry.

Was it despair because he had lost all his companions?

Yes.

Was it fear that he would never reach the end of the Dungeon no matter what he did?

That too.

But more than any of those things...

The fact that he alone had survived after leaving all his comrades behind was what made him break down.

And the fact that despite making such a horrible choice, part of him had still felt relieved to be alive.

That realization made him sob even harder.

“......”

How different was the Yohan of today from the person he had been then?

He did not know.

And he had not returned here to find out.

Still, there was one conclusion he had to reach.

He needed to use every ability, every piece of information, and every ally available to discover the truth.

Why had this world dragged them here?

Why had they been forced to die?

Why was he unable to die?

“Once I uncover every secret... maybe I’ll finally be able to face them without shame.”

His companions.

And himself.

The cores flashed continuously.

The remains were somewhere inside this sea.

Yohan did not hesitate.

He jumped into the water.

The Nameless Sea gladly accepted the man who had lost hope.
