Chapter 57

Chapter 57

“...Are they taking them directly there?”

“Probably. They have plenty of useful supplies.”

The main force cared about only one thing.

Where would Belvar and the others be taken?

The answer was somewhere completely outside their expectations.

“That direction should lead to the plaza...”

Dexter’s eyes widened.

He spoke quietly.

“That’s it! The fountain!”

“But we never detected anything there. We watched that place longer than almost anywhere else because it looked suspicious.”

“Exactly... We observed it at least thirteen times. More than five hours total.”

“How does it work?”

“We’ll know once we see it ourselves. Move.”

At Yohan’s signal, more than one hundred seventy members of the main force began jumping from rooftop to rooftop.

They approached the plaza.

An enormous crowd had already gathered there.

Humans and Derhai formed the majority, but almost every race on the thirteenth floor seemed represented.

Most knelt with both arms tied.

Several who had resisted had been melted or beaten down and lay collapsed on the ground.

Around one hundred soldiers pointed weapons toward them.

That was not an enormous number.

But with such a massive difference in weapon technology, nobody in the plaza could oppose them.

Eventually, the soldiers forced several residents to stand.

They brought them to the fountain.

Then they pushed the captives into the flowing water.

The entire fountain suddenly sank downward.

It swallowed the residents.

Danforth and Dexter stared from a distance.

“I’ve never seen the fountain do that before. Right, Dexter?”

“Yes... Not once. We watched it at least thirteen times for over five hours.”

“It could be a temporary passage created specifically for this operation.”

The fountain continued moving up and down.

Ten residents disappeared each time.

Once Belvar’s group approached the front, Yohan glanced at Albern and Kalkerak.

They knew the destination.

Now they needed to suppress the slave soldiers before more residents became involved.

Removing the soldiers’ weapons would make defeating them easy.

They could not die, but their actual combat ability was not especially high.

Yohan prepared to signal.

Then...

SCREEECH!

SCREECH!

Fish suddenly burst from the fountain.

Fish that had not existed there moments earlier.

“What the hell?!”

“Ghk! These things...!”

The creatures had huge eyes and enormous teeth.

They attacked only the soldiers.

Those bitten had chunks of flesh torn away.

They screamed in pain.

Bang! Bang!

Whoosh!

The soldiers opened fire in every direction in an attempt to drive the fish away.

Chaos spread throughout the plaza.

Belvar and his companions immediately seized the opportunity and attacked several soldiers.

Danforth shouted,

“Now!”

“Everyone in! Take their weapons first!”

“Prepare barriers at all times! Don’t lose the people assigned to you!”

“Yes!”

The main expedition force stormed into the plaza.

The counterattack began.

Several brave residents joined them.

The battle became intense almost instantly.

Yohan used Blood Magic to destroy the soldiers’ hands so they could no longer use weapons.

General Kalkerak and the other swordsmen focused on cutting off wrists.

The soldiers had been focused on the fountain and failed to respond in time.

Their formation collapsed rapidly.

Yohan would never miss an opportunity like that.

He jumped directly into their formation.

Bullets struck his body.

He ignored every shot.

Tentacles burst from his shadow.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Dozens of necks snapped.

Thud.

Thump.

Thud...

The soldiers collapsed.

Even then, true to their immortal nature, they twisted their bodies and tried to stand again.

The elves immediately suppressed them with paralysis and binding magic.

Residents realized this might be their only chance.

They fled from the plaza in panic.

Aren arrived several minutes later than most.

He suddenly felt someone staring.

He turned left.

Among the many alleys connected to the plaza, Asenas Waite stood elegantly.

She smiled.

Then she silently gestured toward him.

If he fled in her direction, he would be safe.

“......”

Aren gave no answer.

He showed no reaction at all.

Instead, he immediately turned away.

Yohan and the main force were already moving toward the fountain.

From Asenas’s perspective, that decision was utterly absurd.

She let out a disbelieving laugh and touched her trembling lips.

“H-Haha...”

They planned to fight head-on?

Against a Great Old One?

She already knew Yohan Blake was insane.

But she had not expected this level of insanity.

If they went this far, even her side could no longer help them.

“...Maybe they really might reach our homeland.”

Asenas disappeared.

Which force would reach Innsmouth?

The immortal army inheriting Bulsum’s mission?

Or the foolish expedition dreaming of conquering the Dungeon?

Whichever one arrived, she had absolutely no intention of losing.

Still...

This would be entertaining.

“Please become a magnificent sacrifice for our Father.”

Apparently, news of what had happened in the plaza had not yet reached the soldiers below.

They continued pointing weapons toward the captives and ordering them down the staircase.

Step.

Step.

Only the footsteps of many different races echoed through the silent passage.

As they descended, the expedition members silently reviewed the strategy they had discussed beforehand.

More than ten minutes passed.

Finally, the staircase ended.

An enormous underground cavern appeared.

It served as Bulsum’s altar.

It was also the facility where new slave soldiers were created.

Nearly one thousand people were already gathered inside.

Hundreds of soldiers surrounded them.

The captives stood in twenty long columns.

The expedition members quickly studied the scene.

“Move. Unless you want a hole through your skull.”

“......”

A soldier pressed a gun barrel against the back of General Kalkerak’s head.

The general’s eyes flashed dangerously.

Yohan gave him a look.

Not yet.

Kalkerak lowered his head.

Danforth noticed Alshun standing several rows ahead.

He scratched his forehead bitterly.

The residents at the front struggled desperately to escape from something beyond a thick barrier.

Every one of them wore a different expression of fear.

But their struggling did not last long.

Soon...

They began moving toward the barrier instead.

They rubbed their bodies against it.

Sniff.

Sniff, sniff.

The sound of desperate breathing filled the cavern.

Ugthun stood watching with folded arms.

He snapped his fingers.

The barrier disappeared.

A strange cry erupted from the captives.

It was impossible to tell whether it was terror or joy.

Soon, all twenty lost consciousness.

Their limp bodies were tossed aside like corpses.

Yohan watched the process repeat in groups of twenty.

He nodded.

I see.

A faint smile appeared.

So that’s how they mass-produce the soldiers.

[Looks like Bulsum stored quite a bit of power. If it can create soldiers this quickly...]

The goddess appeared again.

She licked her lips at the interesting sight.

[This won’t be as easy as last time. Poor Yohan. Hehehe.]

Poor, my ass. I welcome it.

[...Oh? Really?]

This Apostle will be different from Naberius and Ran-Tegoth.

Around then, the sweet fragrance finally reached his nose.

They were still some distance away from the Old One’s true body.

Even so, several people were already becoming dazed.

Yes.

This was Bulsum’s most terrifying ability.

Its personal authority was relatively weak compared to other Great Old Ones.

But its obsession with troops and technology surpassed most Old Ones.

Once it swallowed the thirteenth floor, it would naturally aim for the fourteenth.

After gathering enough soldiers and weapons from both floors, it would challenge Innsmouth on Floors 15 and 16.

The army of Deep Ones was absurdly large.

A war against them would require overwhelming numbers.

It would take time.

But probably only a few months.

Then a brutal full-scale war would begin.

Many would die.

I don’t particularly care who lives or dies...

But Yohan wanted to avoid a single faction conquering several Dungeon floors entirely.

Right now, the Great Old Ones competed because each desired its own influence.

That conflict between them was exactly why an expedition of this size could descend.

He could not allow this place to become another R’lyeh.

A floor effectively ruled completely by a sleeping god.

And more importantly...

“The Deep Ones are mine to tear apart personally.”

“Hey! What did you just say?!”

Two slave soldiers nearby had heard him.

They approached.

“Perfect timing.”

“No talking inside the sacred sanctuary, Sapiens.”

“You speak our language surprisingly well. Do they educate you too?”

Click.

The soldiers pointed their guns at Yohan.

Exactly as they had done to General Kalkerak.

Yohan smiled.

He glanced toward the expedition members.

The unpleasant sensation of gun barrels touching his forehead and temple caused murderous intent to burst from his body.

“Who gave you permission to point guns at me?”

Then...

CRUNCH!

Small tentacles emerged from Yohan’s hand.

They crushed both gun barrels.

“Y-You bastard?!”

“I’ll make those mouths apologize properly.”

Yohan deliberately raised his voice.

Then he threw both soldiers across the cavern.

BOOM!

The battle began without warning.

The soldiers immediately opened fire.

Not a single bullet reached Yohan.

An unknown force deflected them.

The bullets instead struck nearby residents.

Yohan’s shadow expanded.

Using the confusion, expedition members grabbed nearby civilians and retreated toward the cavern entrance.

Several overlapping barriers appeared.

Ping!

Ping!

Several subordinates hurried toward Ugthun.

“The resistance is growing stronger. Should we suppress them?”

“No.”

Ugthun smiled.

“Leave them. They’re all future soldiers. There’s no reason to damage them.”

Instead, he removed the massive translucent barrier that had been blocking Bulsum in preparation for the next feeding.

His smile became cruel.

“You think moving that tiny distance will let you escape His temptation?”

Ugthun laughed.

“You cannot escape, outsiders. He will not allow it.”

Then...

Yohan jumped across the cavern.

He landed directly in front of Ugthun without even bothering to soften the impact.

BOOM!

“Escape? I never planned to.”

Ugthun’s eyes narrowed.

“Then?”

“I’ll capture you, force Bulsum to open the passage, and descend to the next floor.”

Yohan smiled with obvious excitement.

“That’s my only option.”

He finally had an opponent who might be worth fighting.

“Try to entertain me this time, Apostle.”
