Chapter 239. Beowulf (1)
A Hindu temple located a little south of the Victoria Memorial.
Merlin sat alone there in a chair.
The situation throughout Kolkata was being projected onto the wall before him through his magic.
Using it, Merlin could roughly keep track of how the battle was progressing.
“Merlin.”
At the sound of a girl’s voice, Merlin turned his head.
Three humans were entering the temple.
A slender girl.
A huge woman.
And a well-built man.
Christina, Siegfried’s Contractor.
Sylvia, Beowulf’s Contractor.
And Alexandros, Heracles’s Contractor.
“We came back like you ordered, but is this really okay?”
“What are you referring to?”
“Are we really not supposed to join the fighting?”
Battles between Constellations were currently raging throughout Kolkata.
“I would like to ask the same thing, Lord Merlin.”
The one who spoke was Alexandros, whose appearance resembled that of his own Constellation.
“I wanted to fight the Knights of the Round Table alongside Lord Heracles.”
Heracles was currently battling the Knights of the Round Table on a road in western Kolkata.
Alexandros had appeared alongside Heracles, but after killing the Demon God-class demon Barbatos, he had immediately withdrawn from the battlefield.
“I already told all of you.”
Merlin spoke gently.
“There is no need for you Contractors to fight Constellations.”
“But...”
“The reason I summoned you here in the first place was so you could deal with the Demon God-class demons.”
Merlin had brought Christina, Sylvia, and Alexandros to Kolkata so they could fight Demon God-class demons such as Moloch.
By showing other Constellations these three defeating Demon God-class demons, he intended to prove that direct Constellation intervention was unnecessary in the war against Pandemonium.
This time, Christina and Alexandros had defeated Moloch and Barbatos respectively.
And the Society’s Constellations had not interfered at all.
“Fine. But Merlin.”
“What is it, Christina?”
Christina raised a hand.
“I can’t manifest Balmung.”
"..."
“Did something happen to my Constellation, Siegfried?”
Merlin slowly nodded.
“Siegfried has perished.”
“I see...”
Christina didn’t look particularly shocked.
She simply accepted the fact calmly.
“Then I’m a Contractor without a Constellation now.”
“No... if I don’t have a Constellation anymore, does that mean I’m not even a Contractor?”
“But Christina.”
Merlin reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“The Skills you learned as a Contractor and your enhancement ranks remain intact.”
“You simply can’t receive Siegfried’s Blessing anymore, and you can no longer use his Constellation Armament.”
“Other than that, your combat ability remains unchanged.”
“Got it.”
Christina slowly nodded.
“Then what should I do?”
“Do I need to contract with a new Constellation?”
“Just wait patiently.”
“I have plans for that.”
As he spoke, Merlin raised one hand.
A glowing sword appeared in it.
“If you can no longer use Balmung, then use this.”
“What sword is that?”
“It’s called Marmyadose.”
“It was a sword King Arthur used long ago.”
“It originally belonged to the giants, and it was said to be an even greater sword than Excalibur.”
“Greater than Excalibur...?”
“Britain in those days was a land where all kinds of holy swords gathered.”
“A weapon like this existed there as well.”
Merlin handed Marmyadose to Christina.
“There are stories that Vulcan, the Roman god, forged it.”
“There are also stories that Heracles once wielded it.”
“I don’t know whether either is true.”
“Lord Heracles’s...”
Alexandros, Heracles’s Contractor, looked at Christina with envy.
"..."
Christina took the new sword and lightly swung it.
Then she wrapped the blade in sword aura.
“It’s definitely an excellent sword.”
“It’s not inferior to Balmung at all.”
“You should be able to use it with a similar feel.”
“Hey, Merlin.”
Sylvia, who had been silently watching, finally spoke.
“Don’t you have anything for me?”
“You already have Beowulf’s Constellation Armament, the Giant’s Sword, don’t you?”
Merlin smiled.
“If Beowulf dies and you can no longer use his Constellation Armament, I’ll give you something then.”
“What a horrible thing to say.”
“You really don’t care if your fellow Constellations die, do you?”
“Haha. Of course I do.”
“Suspicious.”
Sylvia glared at Merlin before sitting on a nearby chair.
“Whatever.”
“So we just wait here for now?”
“Yes.”
“Just wait a little.”
Merlin looked out the window.
“If Kang Yujin reaches this place...”
“that will be when you step in.”
“Kahaha...!”
Beowulf charged toward us while laughing.
A massive sword was in his hand.
The weapon was around two meters long, though its silhouette resembled a short sword.
Then that had to be the giant-sized short sword Beowulf had obtained while fighting monsters...
the Giant’s Sword.
“Kang Yujin, you should be careful.”
“That sword was described as incredibly powerful in the legends.”
“So...”
Hearing my advice, Kang Yujin snapped irritably.
“I told you to stop ordering me around!”
With that shout, Kang Yujin rushed past me and charged straight at Beowulf.
He already had [Saint’s Divine Fist] equipped and wrapped himself in [Protective Aura] to block Beowulf’s attack.
“Ghk!”
But unlike the enemies he had faced until now...
Beowulf’s strike pushed Kang Yujin backward.
If Kang Yujin hadn’t hurriedly withdrawn his arm, [Saint’s Divine Fist] itself might have been damaged.
“That’s why I warned you!”
I opened fire with the Count of Monte Cristo’s handgun, using the shots to restrain Beowulf.
Kang Yujin used the opening to escape, and the two of us retreated together.
“Where do you think you’re going...?”
Beowulf’s eyes flashed as he tried to pursue us.
But at that moment, Princess Longji’s Mist-Dew Universe Net captured him.
Water moved as though it possessed a will of its own, swallowing Beowulf and trying to drown him.
But...
“Useless!”
Beowulf ‘tore apart’ the water.
Water exploded in every direction as he leaped forward again.
“Kang Yujin! In terms of raw strength, he’s on Heracles’s level!”
“Avoid taking his attacks as much as possible!”
“That’s easy to say...!”
Kang Yujin and I moved in different directions while exchanging those words.
Kang Yujin pulled out his flail to increase his attack range.
I kept pulling the trigger.
“Kang Yujin, you’re the only one I’m interested in...!”
But Beowulf didn’t even look at me.
He charged straight at Kang Yujin.
Just like Heracles, he caught the flail Kang Yujin swung at him with his bare hand...
then threw it right back.
“Ghk...!”
Kang Yujin barely avoided the incoming iron ball.
But doing so disturbed his posture slightly.
Beowulf didn’t miss it.
He rushed in.
“Kang Yujin!”
Kang Yujin narrowly dodged Beowulf’s sword.
