Chapter 257

Chapter 257. Expedition (4)

“They resemble the existing demons, but they’re clearly different beings.”

Joo Minha spoke while intercepting the monsters that kept swarming toward them with magic.

“It looks like they’re being born from the plant-like entity covering the ground.”

“Born from that?”

“Yes. I just saw one emerge when something like a flower bud formed below.”

Kang Yujin frowned and looked down.

Sure enough, things resembling flower buds were appearing here and there.

But what looked like petals...

were actually the monsters’ wings.

“It may be absorbing demons and giving birth to a new species of demon.”

“Why would it do something like that?”

“I don’t know.”

Joo Minha answered in a stiff voice.

“Maybe it really is trying to turn this world into Hell.”

"...!"

Demons controlled a large part of the world, but they hadn’t literally turned it into Hell.

The war had certainly created terrible chaos, but within Pandemonium’s territory, a relatively stable society had still existed.

This place, however...

was a Hell where even the original demons could barely survive.

“We need to break into Pandemonium’s heartland as quickly as possible.”

Heracles frowned as he drew his bow.

At that moment, a massive shadow rose into the sky.

“What is that?”

“It’s enormous.”

A dragon with the heads of a dog, an eagle, and a human was flying toward them.

It screamed as it approached.

“A three-headed dragon...”

“That’s Duke Bune, one of Pandemonium’s Seventy-Two Demons.”

“A Demon God-class demon!”

Heracles immediately aimed his bow.

Alexandros also raised his bow, mirroring his Constellation.

The difference in power was enormous, but two laser-like arrows shot toward the three-headed dragon.

“SKREEEEE!”

But the arrows never struck Bune.

Twisting his body like an acrobatic aircraft, he narrowly avoided both shots.

And without slowing down at all...

he rushed straight toward the Roc carrying Kang Yujin’s group.

“No choice, then!”

Heracles pulled out his metal club, his Constellation Armament.

According to what Kang Yujin had heard before, it was a weapon forged by Hephaestus, the god of smithing.

“Hm!”

Heracles leaped.

Flying through the air, he swung the club and smashed one of Bune’s heads apart.

“SKREEEEE!”

But Bune had three heads.

Only the human head was destroyed.

The dog and eagle heads remained intact.

“You bastard...!”

Heracles tried to smash the remaining heads too.

But Bune twisted violently through the air once again.

Heracles momentarily lost his balance...

and missed his chance to attack.

“Waaah!”

Sinbad screamed.

Bune’s enormous body was about to collide with the Roc.

"...!"

Kang Yujin moved instinctively.

Alexandros moved at the same time.

They each jumped onto one of Bune’s wings and used their strength to interfere with his wingbeats.

“H-Hey! You two...!”

“Lord Sinbad, I think this is as far as you can take us.”

“J-Joo Minha, what are you planning to do?”

“You said the Roc is difficult to control precisely, didn’t you?”

“We’re almost there anyway. We’ll handle things ourselves from here.”

“A-Are you sure?”

“Don’t worry. Please withdraw.”

After saying that, Joo Minha jumped into the air as well.

Using magic, she created footholds in midair and began supporting Kang Yujin and the others.

“Good luck!”

With Sinbad’s shout, the Roc flew away.

In the end...

Kang Yujin, Joo Minha, Heracles, and Alexandros were left fighting Bune in midair.

“This thing seems to have lost its intelligence, unlike the other Demon God-class demons!”

“Could it have been newly born like those monsters from before?!”

“It may have been altered somehow!”

Bune thrashed violently.

He kept twisting his body, trying to shake off the enemies clinging to him.

But Kang Yujin, Alexandros, and Heracles possessed enough physical strength to hold on despite the aerial acrobatics.

“OOOOOOH!”

Heracles finally stabilized himself.

With a roar, he swung his club.

The eagle head exploded.

At last, Bune’s wingbeats became sluggish.

“He’s falling!”

“Everyone, be careful!”

With a thunderous crash, the enormous three-headed dragon fell into the ruined city below.

Kang Yujin barely managed to get back to his feet.

He pushed through the rubble and rushed toward Bune.

Just as he gathered internal energy into his fist to destroy the final dog head...

a voice came from it.

“You...”

The voice came from Bune’s remaining head.

“Are you... humans...?”

“Did you regain your senses?”

“Ah... I see.”

“You must be Kang Yujin... the savior who appeared among humanity.”

Bune looked at Kang Yujin.

“Then please... kill me, Kang Yujin...”

“What happened to you?”

“My spiritual energy was drained... my soul suffered severe damage... and I became a mindless beast...”

“I can barely speak to you now... but I’ll lose my mind again soon...”

“So while I still have some reason left... please...”

Kang Yujin looked troubled.

Joo Minha descended nearby and examined Bune’s condition.

“What exactly happened inside Pandemonium?”

“His Highness Bael... was doing something with His Majesty Lucifer’s corpse beneath the Assembly Hall...”

“Lucifer’s corpse...!”

“His Highness Bael’s goal... was the resurrection of His Majesty Lucifer...”

“These grotesque things now covering Pandemonium...”

“they are the resurrected body of His Majesty Lucifer...”

"...!"

Kang Yujin and Joo Minha both sucked in a breath.

“Everything here is... part of Lucifer?”

“The Lucifer of the past was never a plant-like existence like this.”

“He should have had a humanoid form.”

“That is why... His Highness Bael... has gone mad...”

Bune panted heavily.

“His Highness Bael... sacrificed the others.”

“Agares... Vassago... Paimon... Buer... Beleth...”

“Those are some of the greatest demons among the Seventy-Two.”

“All of them had their spiritual energy drained into this ‘Lucifer’?”

“Yes.”

“That is how... such a powerful existence was created...”

“What is he planning to do with something like this?”

“If this thing covers the Earth, is that supposed to count as Lucifer conquering the world?”

“Ah... that... that is... SKREEEEE!”

Bune’s eyes suddenly changed.

His wings began flapping again.

He had lost his reason once more.

“No choice.”

Kang Yujin drove his internal-energy-filled fist into the last remaining head and destroyed it.

The body twitched several times.

Then Heracles swung his club once, and Bune finally went still.

“We have a rough idea of what happened now.”

Heracles frowned.

“Bael, the leader of the Seventy-Two Demons, tried to resurrect Lucifer and caused this disaster.”

“So this was a separate resurrection plan from the Vessel project being carried out by the pro-war faction and Ha Mina.”

“Then all we need to do is enter Dis City, defeat Bael, and finish off Lucifer.”

“At least the objective is clear now.”

Heracles muttered that...

then looked back and forth between Kang Yujin and Alexandros.

“You two should probably turn back.”

“What?”

“Lord Heracles, what do you mean?”

“Didn’t you hear what he just said?”

“Lucifer is in the middle of being resurrected.”

Heracles’s voice was cold.

“You haven’t forgotten that both of you are Lucifer Vessels, have you?”

"...!"

“At first, I thought that probably wouldn’t matter.”

“But after seeing monsters being born from those flower buds earlier, I changed my mind.”

Heracles looked around.

“I don’t believe this plant-like thing covering Pandemonium is the true Lucifer.”

“It will probably absorb nutrients from all over the world through this form...”

“and then use them to give birth to the real Lucifer.”

The real Lucifer.

The moment Heracles said those words, his expression grew grim.

Even Heracles was clearly wary of Lucifer’s true resurrection.

“Your bodies may become the ‘vessels’ for Lucifer’s resurrection.”

“Vessels?”

“It could pour all the energy it has absorbed into your bodies and turn you into the true Lucifer.”

“Of course... your personalities would be completely destroyed in the process.”

"..."

“So it would be safer to flee as far away as possible.”

Even Kang Yujin couldn’t dismiss the idea as nonsense.

But he still shook his head.

“No. I’m not doing that.”

“Why?”

“Even if I run away now, it won’t make much difference if this thing spreads across the entire world.”

If he fled now, Lucifer’s tendrils would eventually reach him anyway.

Of course, if the problem were solved before then, that would be different...

“And Alexandros and I aren’t the only Vessels.”

“Christina and Sylvia.”

“We don’t know where they are right now.”

“But as long as they exist, there’s no point in us running away.”

Alexandros nodded beside him.

“Mr. Kang Yujin is right.”

“We should commit our maximum fighting strength now and end this as quickly as possible.”

“You think so too?”

“Please let me fight, Lord Heracles.”

“No helping it, then...”

Heracles nodded.

Perhaps he had brought it up partly to test their resolve.

“Then let’s move quickly.”

“The walls visible over there should be the outer edge of Dis City.”

Heracles took the lead.

The others followed him.

Ha Mina slowly opened her eyes.

It was dark around her.

There seemed to be no sunlight or artificial light, but a faint green glow seeped in from somewhere, allowing her to see her surroundings.

Where am I...?

The walls and floor had the texture of tree bark.

The ceiling was covered in something similar.

“You’re awake, Ha Mina.”

A voice suddenly spoke.

It was a dignified male voice.

“Who are you?”

“Bael.”

She remembered the name.

No. 1 of Pandemonium’s Seventy-Two Demons.

The leader of the Demon God Assembly.

The demons of the pro-war faction who had cooperated with Ha Mina had often warned her to be cautious of Bael.

“Then where am I?”

“Dis City, the capital of Pandemonium.”

“You brought me here from Korea?”

“Teleporting such a long distance was no simple matter.”

“In the end, I had no choice but to borrow His Majesty’s power.”

“His Majesty...?”

“Yes, Ha Mina.”

A man wearing a crown approached her.

“The place you are standing inside right now... is His Majesty Lucifer himself.”

"..."

Lucifer.

Hearing that name, Ha Mina looked around once more.

After confirming the overwhelming spiritual energy filling the area, she spoke.

“No.”

“What?”

“There’s no way this silent, inorganic thing is him.”

Ha Mina denied it without hesitation.

Bael fell silent, as though caught off guard.

“You know that too, don’t you?”

"..."

“That’s why you brought me here.”

Ha Mina stood.

She gently touched the bark-like surface surrounding her.

Then she spoke calmly.

“I’ll help you bring forth a Demon King that everyone can truly accept.”

“That is exactly the answer I was waiting for.”

Bael nodded with satisfaction.
