Chapter 49

Chapter 49. Pyramid (2)

Because the pyramid had turned out to be a government facility, I had not expected it to contain anything like a dungeon.

However, this was a world where magic and monsters existed.

Making assumptions about what might be inside was dangerous.

Our group gathered in front of the door Axel had discovered.

I picked up the canary cage again.

“Same method as before. Stay silent, and I’ll lead. Keep your weapons ready so you can enter combat at any moment.”

“Yes, my lord!”

The knights adjusted their equipment.

Since the passage looked too narrow for longswords, they switched to short spears, greatswords, maces, and other weapons that could be used more effectively.

Knight Commander Axel looked slightly nervous.

“Do you think undead will appear?”

“Maybe. If many people died underground, it’s possible.”

“If this place was caught in a war, then there may have been many deaths.”

Judging from the size of the facility, at least fifty people probably worked here.

If they had all been killed at once and abandoned underground, undead appearing would not be strange.

“I’ll open it.”

I used [Convenient Lesser Appraisal] and entered the password.

Rumble.

The iron door leading underground opened.

A gust of air carrying the smell of ancient dust blew toward me.

No gas, apparently.

The canary in my hand remained calm.

“We’re going in.”

I held the cage in my left hand and Soul Reaper in my right.

I moved forward slowly.

Quiet.

The only sound was the canary fluttering inside its cage.

Even the knights moved without making footsteps.

We descended through stairs and corridors.

Air somehow circulated all the way down here, so breathing was not difficult.

I would have to investigate the ventilation system later.

After descending what felt like roughly fifteen meters underground, we encountered another large iron door.

“Everyone, prepare for combat.”

The knights tightened their formation, raised their weapons, and activated their aura.

Rumble.

Using the password discovered through [Convenient Lesser Appraisal], I opened the door.

Then,

Uuuaaagh...

A zombie rushed out.

Smash, smash!

It disappeared instantly.

There had been five zombies.

The knights destroyed every one of them in less than two seconds.

Zombies in this world were weak.

Even zombies nearly three thousand years old were still one-hit kills.

“Advance.”

Maintaining formation, we slowly moved through the iron doorway.

The place resembled a huge warehouse.

However, stacked crates and dividing walls made it feel like a complicated maze.

We had not even advanced ten meters before another monster appeared.

Huuuu...

A glowing spiritual body floated through the air.

A specter.

These things caused confusion, fear, and other effects through mental attacks.

“Ghh!”

Several knights were immediately struck by its mental attack.

Whoosh, whoosh.

One knight swung his mace.

However, normal physical attacks did not work on a spiritual being like a specter.

A knight capable of Aura Focus could gather aura directly into his weapon and deal some damage.

Unfortunately, only two knights in the territory could do that, Raul, Chief of Security Affairs, and the retired Sir Pierre.

Neither was here.

Even covering your entire body in aura and attacking would only deal slight damage.

“Damn it. Winnie, can you attack them with magic?”

“I’m preparing!”

While she prepared, I decided to draw the specters toward me.

Thanks to [Status Abnormality Immunity], their mental attacks did nothing to me.

I concentrated mana into Soul Reaper and swung at one specter to get its attention.

Slash!

Kieeeeh...

The specter was cut apart in a single blow.

“Huh?”

What was this?

Whatever.

Kill first, think later.

I began cutting through the five or six specters.

When one completely disappeared,

[The soul stack of the item ‘Soul Reaper’ has increased. (1/100)]

Now I understood why this sword was called Soul Reaper.

Whenever it killed something, it absorbed the soul and increased a stack whose purpose I did not yet understand.

Maybe once it reached one hundred, some ultimate attack would go, whoosh, bang!

Anyway, I now had an easy way to deal with troublesome undead monsters.

“Undead bastards, repeat after me. You’re already dead.”

The knights gave me strange looks after hearing my muttering.

I ignored them.

We were busy.

Slash, slash, shraaak!

Kieeeeh...

[The soul stack of the item ‘Soul Reaper’ has increased. (6/100)]

I destroyed every specter by myself.

The knights stared at me in amazement.

“Oh, my lord. As expected of one blessed by the gods.”

“To defeat such troublesome monsters so easily, incredible.”

It was nothing.

This was item power.

“We’re advancing again. This whole place is one huge chamber, so prepare in case a large number of undead attack at once.”

The knights nervously gripped their weapons and raised their aura.

First zombies.

Then specters.

There was no telling what would appear next.

As we moved deeper, the cramped maze suddenly opened into a wide space.

More than a hundred zombies and skeletons had gathered there.

And near the center stood a knight with a burning head.

Then a thought entered our minds.

Who are you?

It was [Thought Transmission].

The Death Knight with the burning head had used it.

Even if we spoke different languages, the skill allowed communication.

Powerful monsters sometimes used abilities like this.

I had experienced it many times in my previous life, so I remained calm.

“Fallen knight, I am Eric Marcel, lord of this land.”

Marcel? This land is Massilia of the Calipha Dynasty.

Undead monsters, even when they retained their personalities, were often mentally damaged.

Their understanding of time and space became distorted.

“You are a ghost of Calipha. The Calipha Dynasty fell nearly three thousand years ago.”

Three thousand years? Liar! Our lord will come to rescue us!

Apparently, they had been trapped here during a war and died waiting for rescue.

Their resentment had accumulated until they collectively became undead.

If I resolved their resentment, perhaps they would become weaker.

For now, conversation was worth attempting.

“Will you tell me what happened? Why are you trapped here?”

The Celts! Those damned Celts came like a wave! They killed our families and neighbors!

Surprisingly, the Death Knight answered readily.

According to his story, foreign enemies invaded, burning the city and harbor.

Survivors fled into the only remaining facility, the Maritime Business Administration lighthouse.

But no rescue force ever arrived.

Trapped inside a limited underground space, they gradually died from starvation and disease.

So they were abandoned.

Either this place had not been worth defending strategically, or the Calipha Dynasty simply lacked the ability to save them.

I offered the Death Knight a chance to return home.

Luring them peacefully was better than fighting and losing people.

“If you want, I can send your remains back to your homeland.”

The Death Knight hesitated.

But centuries of hatred had already twisted him too deeply.

He spat out curses against the Celts.

I kept speaking, buying time.

When I glanced back, Witch Winnie nodded.

She had finished preparing her offensive magic while I distracted the Death Knight.

“Winnie, now.”

“[Flowing Lava].”

It was not actual lava.

It was simply a fire-element attack.

A spark left Winnie’s palm, grew larger, and fell into the center of the undead formation.

If I compared it to a game, it was basically [Fireball].

Boom!

Zombies and skeletons exploded into fragments under the scorching blast.

At the same moment, I shouted.

“Charge!”

“Waaaa!”

Kuu, kuu.

I took the point while the knights followed.

Stone Golems split to the left and right to handle the weaker monsters.

Their combat level was not high, but their mass was enormous.

Against trash mobs like zombies and skeletons, they were extremely effective.

Crash, crash, crash.

With a single sweep of a Stone Golem’s arm, undead flew away like leaves in autumn.

You control stone monsters! Not bad, mage! But I will make those stone monsters mine!

The Death Knight was about to use a mental attack on the golems.

I merely smiled.

“Go ahead if you can.”

As if a mental attack could work on the AI installed in my golems.

It had not worked in my previous life.

It would not work now either.

While the Death Knight focused on the golems, I broke through the zombies and skeletons in front.

[The soul stack of the item ‘Soul Reaper’ has increased. (21/100)]

[The soul stack of the item ‘Soul Reaper’...]

Together with the knights, I surrounded the Death Knight.

Calling it a formation was generous.

We were basically gang beating him from every direction.

But against a powerful opponent, nothing beat numbers.

“Don’t risk your lives. Hit and retreat!”

“Yes, my lord!”

We attacked and withdrew with short intervals between each strike.

No matter how powerful a monster was, being surrounded by many opponents was difficult.

The Death Knight, meanwhile, failed to dominate the golem’s AI and became furious.

Why won’t that stone monster listen to me?! Does it have no mind?!

Looking down on AI, huh?

I attacked the Death Knight from the front.

I swung Soul Reaper rapidly, pushing him back.

My goal was to keep his attention on me with flashy swordplay.

Axel and the other knights could deal the real damage.

Clang, clang, kraang!

Soul Reaper and the Death Knight’s longsword collided repeatedly.

Young brat, you’re pretty good!

“Old bastard, you talk too much!”

You insolent wretch!

Provoked, he lunged directly toward me.

The knights waiting for an opening immediately rushed in and struck repeatedly.

Dozens of attacks landed in only a brief moment.

The Death Knight swung his longsword in a huge arc and knocked several weapons aside.

But that was the advantage of a gang attack.

He could not block everything.

Slash! Smash! Thud!

Guaaaagh!

Seeing him scream, I seized the opening.

I drove Soul Reaper straight into his torso.

Stab!

Guaaaagh! You barbaric Celts! Cowards!

“So what? I clearly told you I would send you back to your homeland.”

“......”

“Now rest in peace.”

At that moment, perhaps realizing his end was near, the Death Knight suddenly ran toward the back of the chamber.

“Hey! Don’t run!”

Ignoring me, he reached a huge door and grabbed its handle.

“Huh?”

No way.

Creeeeak...

Step, step.

Two more Death Knights walked out through the newly opened door.

Ah.

We’re screwed.

There were now three Death Knights.

Time to retreat.

“Everyone, run back to the entrance! We’ll stop them there!”

“Yes, my lord!”

The knights sprinted away at full speed.

I used the Stone Golems as bait and followed.

How the hell do we stop them? Damn it!

I had only come here to turn on a lighthouse.

Now it had become a boss raid.
