Chapter 81

Chapter 81. A Coup Out of Nowhere

After the attempted assassination against me became public knowledge, letters and gifts arrived from all over.

Most of them contained words of sympathy, and it seemed handing out Royal Marcel had paid off.

Chloe gathered all the gifts, made a detailed list, and reported them one by one.

“...And the Germania Imperial Family and Chancellor Count Leopold sent large amounts of goods along with long letters expressing their ‘regret.’ As compensation, they say they will confiscate the former Count of Westfalen’s personal assets and send them to us.”

“So they dumped everything on the former Count and let Noah slip away.”

“The former Count probably took the blame voluntarily.”

The former Count, who had been the restraint keeping Lorian and Noah in check, was now gone.

This was not what I had intended.

Janis Dijon must be thrilled.

It would be troublesome if Westfalen collapsed under Dijon’s influence right now.

And considering nobody had mentioned Dijon at all, it seemed Westfalen had brushed aside my warning that Noah was the target of a curse.

If Noah dies, Michael is next. Then I’m next after him. I need to stop this somehow.

My hatred for them was irrelevant.

The fact remained that the Westfalen family served as a breakwater protecting Marcel.

If possible, it would be better to keep both Noah and Count Michael alive.

However, although many people in Westfalen had been friendly with me, there was nobody I could truly call my ally.

Being close to someone did not mean they would take risks for me.

I had no choice but to find a way through Pascal’s father, the Heraldry Officer.

“Palatinate also sent a letter and gifts wishing for Your Lordship’s health and safety.”

Palatinate was the territory I had once screwed over during the black mage incident.

They must have enjoyed watching the Westfalen family receive an even bigger beating from me.

It felt like they had sent gifts under the principle that the enemy of my enemy was my friend.

“Send Count Palatinate one of the new Royal Marcel products in return. Tell him I look forward to continued friendship between us.”

Just in case, I should reconcile with Palatinate.

They might become useful later.

“Distribute the gifts we received from the various territories among the knights who fought this time, including Sir Orian.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Then I urgently summoned Pascal.

Pascal hurried into my office after the sudden summons.

“My lord, is something urgent?”

“Yeah. Can you contact your father?”

“Yes. He wrote recently that he got fired. He’s the ‘former’ Heraldry Officer now. Hahaha!”

Why are you laughing when your own father got fired?

Was Pascal really planning to move his entire family here?

“I’ll officially give you leave. Secretly visit Westfalen.”

“W, Westfalen?”

“Why are you scared?”

“Because... I might die.”

I laughed.

Unless Noah had gone insane, why would he touch Pascal?

Ah.

Maybe he really had gone insane.

“Can you go quietly and come back? I’ll attach a knight to you.”

“Can I go with Sir Martin? I think the other knights would be discovered quickly.”

Both Pascal and Martin were known faces in Westfalen.

If they were going secretly anyway, it was better to send people who knew the geography and military deployment well.

“Good idea. Hand over your work properly before you leave.”

“There’s not much to hand over... Ah, we finally found a Mage Tower that researches evil energy.”

During the lighthouse pyramid excavation, Pascal had guessed that evil energy was the reason most of the documents were damaged.

At the time, I had ordered him to find a mage who could explain whether evil energy truly existed.

“Where?”

“Basra Mage Tower.”

I immediately frowned.

Basra Mage Tower was even farther away than the Fatima Dynasty.

The closest related person was Amar Mustafa Hussein, the master of Vincent, the heir of the Duke of Veneto.

We had made a terrible first impression on each other.

Actually, I had insulted him.

Even writing him a letter felt uncomfortable.

“Leave the matter of evil energy to me now. Just make sure you return safely from Westfalen.”

“Am I delivering a letter to my father?”

“There is no letter. Tell him verbally.”

Pascal swallowed.

Apparently, he realized this was no ordinary errand.

Maybe this was what a spy felt like before infiltrating enemy territory.

* * *

Pascal and Martin boarded the lord’s ship, the Benedikta, and quickly traveled to the lowlands west of Westfalen.

From there, they boarded a regular river vessel and traveled upstream.

Their original plan had been to infiltrate from neighboring Palatinate or Saxony.

However, security was surprisingly loose.

So they moved directly into Westfalen.

Because they took the shortest route, they arrived much faster than expected.

As they stepped off at the Westfalen dock, both looked confused.

“Martin, doesn’t something feel strange? There’s no inspection at the harbor.”

“Yeah. Forget the soldiers, I don’t even see any knights.”

If they had encountered a knight they knew, they would have fled.

But right now, even their forged identity cards were completely unnecessary.

“Could it be because of that incident?”

“I can’t say no. All of Knight Commander Cain’s closest men died, and they were high-ranking knights too. The atmosphere inside the knight order must be a complete mess.”

Their guess was correct.

The Westfalen Knight Order was in chaos because it had to select a new Deputy Commander and replace the missing knights.

Even territorial patrols were barely functioning.

“That works in our favor. Let’s go to my house first.”

It happened to be market day.

The sun was also beginning to set in the west.

The two moved without attracting much attention.

Pascal’s father, now the former Heraldry Officer, was shocked by his son’s sudden appearance.

“What are you doing here without warning? Sir Martin came with you too?”

“Father, we’re here on a secret mission. Lock the doors and make sure the maids don’t spread anything.”

“A secret? Understood. Go upstairs to your room first.”

Fortunately, the maids in the house had all served for many years and were trustworthy.

A short while later, the former Heraldry Officer personally brought food to Pascal’s room.

“I brought something to eat. Sir Martin, please have some too.”

The two devoured bread and stew.

They had traveled so quickly that they had missed proper meals.

“But what do you mean by secret mission? Did Viscount Marcel send you?”

“Yes, Father. His Lordship told us to save Young Lord Noah.”

“The Young Lord? How did he know enough to send you? The Young Lord has been unconscious since yesterday. Nobody has found a way to save him, and they say he may die any day now.”

Pascal and Martin could not understand.

“That’s strange. His Lordship should have warned everyone that it was a black mage’s curse.”

“That is not it. Curse detection magic items found nothing.”

Martin joined the conversation.

“Could the detection magic items have been defective?”

“No. His Lordship already bought several new ones. Even the priests found nothing.”

The three fell silent.

They could no longer think of any useful solution.

The reason nobody could detect the curse was simple.

The cursed necklace Sophia had brought from Dijon was an extremely sophisticated magic item.

Only a very high-ranking priest or mage could barely detect it.

A curse designed specifically to evade detection magic items.

Even Eric had not anticipated something like this.

Nobody had imagined Sophia would openly hang a cursed necklace around Noah’s neck.

“Regardless, Viscount Marcel truly is merciful. After all the poor treatment he suffered here, he still worries about the Young Lord’s safety.”

The former Heraldry Officer did not properly know about the assassination attempt against Eric.

The former Count of Westfalen had taken all the blame himself and ordered everyone involved to remain silent.

The truth had not even spread properly within the knight order.

Martin realized the incident had not yet become public inside the territory.

So he explained everything.

“...That is why Noah, under Dijon’s curse, and his follower Cain sent assassins after our lord. Brock, Raines, Ambrose, Ziegler, and Lawrence. Five men. Fortunately, we stopped them. The former Count took the blame in Noah’s place.”

The former Heraldry Officer’s eyes widened in shock.

“Is, is that really true?”

“Yes. I swear on my honor that everything I told you is true.”

“This is... I need to step out for a moment.”

“Huh? Father, where are you going?”

“There are people I need to meet. Don’t worry. Rest.”

The former Heraldry Officer disappeared somewhere.

He returned around two hours later.

And he brought six people with him.

Both Pascal and Martin knew all of them well.

“Sir Tax Officer? The Deputy Commander, Finance Officer, Guard Captain, Cavalry Commander, and even Baron Bielefeld...”

“Let us skip the greetings. Sir Martin, please explain everything you told us earlier again, in detail. Everyone here wants to know the truth.”

Every person gathered there had either lost their position because of Lorian, Noah, and Cain, or had suffered under their abuse of authority.

The atmosphere suddenly felt like a conspiracy meeting for a rebellion.

Martin did not care.

He calmly explained everything.

The gathered men listened with grave expressions.

“Everything I have said is true. I swear on the honor of Lord Eric Marcel and my own.”

Martin was famous for being upright and honest.

Nobody there could doubt him.

“Hmm. A storm is coming to Westfalen.”

“What should we do? If we simply leave things alone, Lady Sophia’s child will become the next lord.”

“If Young Lord Noah dies immediately...”

“Under the current circumstances, we must protect and support His Lordship.”

“I agree. Let us drive out those corrupt bastards. Remove Knight Commander Cain, push Countess Lorian into retirement, and expel Sophia Dijon.”

“Let us gather our comrades and restore His Lordship’s authority.”

“Agreed!”

They were openly discussing a loyalist coup.

Martin and Pascal kept their mouths firmly shut as the situation suddenly escalated.

This was not even their own territory.

And as two young men who had only recently become adults, they had nowhere near enough influence to step forward.

The next day.

The former Heraldry Officer decided to send Pascal and Martin back to Marcel.

The baton had now passed to Westfalen’s old power holders.

There was nothing two young men could do anymore.

There was no reason to expose them to unnecessary danger.

But just as the two were preparing to leave,

news arrived.

Noah Westfalen was dead.

* * *

While I waited for Martin and Pascal to return,

Countess Karin Ronalp suddenly came to Marcel in person.

Damn it. Of all times, she comes now.

She sat on the reception room sofa wearing an outfit that showed more skin than cloth.

Her seductive smile and movements seemed designed to toy with me.

She had probably trapped many men using exactly the same method.

But in my previous life, I had already survived an era of crop tops and dolphin shorts.

I was a seasoned old man.

Something like this would not make me blink.

Perhaps she felt embarrassed by my completely calm gaze.

Karin opened her fan and began fanning herself.

“...Viscount Marcel, I’m glad to see you survived.”

Then Karin’s expression changed completely.

There was not a trace of concern.

Her eyes were filled with expectation.

I could roughly guess what she was thinking.

Because of the assassination attempt, she probably believed I had completely broken with Westfalen.

In other words, Marcel was now a kite with the Westfalen string cut.

But why is she suddenly willing to ignore even the Franche royal family? The crown won’t simply sit still.

It was widely known that Court Count Chatillon was paying attention to Marcel because of the canal project.

There was no way Karin did not know.

I needed more information about that.

I should ask Tower Master Gaston.

And judging by her current attitude, she had probably thrown away the Marcel and Ronalp marriage alliance too.

I decided to probe her.

“There was a slight misunderstanding between myself and the former Count of Westfalen.”

“A misunderstanding? In Germania, do you call attempted assassination a misunderstanding? Hohoho.”

Sarcasm.

There was no need to probe further.

She planned to act however she wanted.

“Yes. A misunderstanding. Anyway, your second daughter’s name was Anna, correct? About our marriage...”

“What a shame. Anna’s marriage has already been arranged. You made her wait too long.”

Fuck! When did you change from grabbing my ankle and begging me to marry her?!

Even the false information Chloe had deliberately leaked through our agents had become useless.

I swallowed my rising irritation.

I needed to find a way out of this situation.

But Karin moved first.

“About that canal you’re building. You’re making it to trade with us, aren’t you?”

“...That is part of the reason.”

“Part? Hohoho. Connect that canal directly to the sea. Make it so our ships can travel through it.”

She wanted long-term free use of the canal.

If that happened, Marcel would simply be bypassed.

We would fail to become a major trade hub of southern Franche.

If this continues, we’ll be right back where we started. I need time.
