Chapter 83

Chapter 83. We Are Westfalen (2)

Cut off Eric’s head myself? No. Why should I take that risk?

Even Cain, simple and violent as he was, could not casually attack a noble like Eric.

There was a reason nobles could exist as nobles.

If someone touched one,

other nobles rushed in and showed them how badly they had fucked up.

To eliminate one noble, Cain needed another noble standing behind him.

During the previous assassination attempt, Noah had served as that backing.

Now Cain needed a replacement.

So he went to Countess Lorian.

Lorian was still the true power behind Westfalen.

Even the influence of the former Count still flowed through her.

Cain entered Lorian’s chambers with the Head Maid.

The moment he stepped inside, he covered his nose.

Ugh. What is that smell? This woman really hasn’t taken a single step outside.

The room was filled with the mixed smells of excrement, perfume, sweat, and several other unpleasant things.

After her only son Noah died, Lorian had locked herself in the room in grief.

If Count Michael had cared for her even slightly, it might not have become this bad.

Michael was probably ignoring Lorian while playing around in the beds of his mistresses.

Cain approached Lorian.

She lay on her bed, silently staring out the window.

“This is Knight Commander Cain.”

Lorian slowly turned her head.

Her empty eyes reflected how deeply she had been broken by loss.

“Eric has come here.”

“......”

Even the name Eric seemed unable to stir her.

She turned back toward the window.

“You should avenge Young Lord Noah.”

That made Lorian look at Cain again.

Focus slowly returned to her eyes.

“What do you mean, avenge him?”

“Isn’t it obvious Eric killed the Young Lord?”

“...Explain.”

“Think carefully. Who benefits most from Young Lord Noah’s death? Only Eric. He must have cursed the Young Lord to kill him, then come here to become Count Michael’s successor.”

Lorian’s lips moved weakly.

She still did not seem convinced.

Cain pulled out something from the past to drive the final nail.

“Eric has the signet ring. He is definitely going to start a rebellion.”

“...!”

Lorian’s eyes widened.

Everyone had always mocked her suspicions as delusions.

Now those delusions seemed to be becoming reality.

It felt as though fire suddenly ignited inside her chest.

“A rebellion! Eric is starting a rebellion!”

“Yes. Just give the order. I will bring you the head of Eric, the leader of the rebellion.”

Cain opened a scroll he had prepared in advance.

The title read,

‘Order for the Suppression of Rebellion.’

Eric was named as the leader of the rebels.

Below that was a death list containing nobles and quasi-nobles belonging to the pro-Michael faction.

Several retainers had already signed it.

Only the final signature line remained blank.

“Sign it.”

The Head Maid, who had already been bought by Cain, handed Lorian a feather pen.

Lorian’s hand shook violently.

But she signed.

“I want bloody revenge against my son’s killer... Sir Cain, please.”

Lorian trembled and cried.

The sight was pitiful enough to inspire sympathy in most people.

Cain merely smiled.

“Hehehe. I will set everything right.”

Even after leaving for the knight order headquarters, Cain could not stop smiling.

Noah’s death had ruined the marriage between Noah and Cain’s daughter.

But Count Michael still remained.

If Cain used the death list in his hand to eliminate every opposing faction,

then married his daughter to Michael,

he would become Michael’s father-in-law.

Wouldn’t that make me practically a Count? I would effectively become a noble. Hehehe.

Cain’s grin widened until his white teeth shone.

* * *

Knight Commander Cain first wanted accurate numbers.

He scattered his knights through the lord’s city to gather intelligence.

The result was bad.

“The enemy has thirty-seven knights?”

“Yes. Both Deputy Commanders appear to have joined that side, the faction supporting Eric and Count Michael.”

The Westfalen Knight Order had four Deputy Commanders.

Two had recently been dispatched to the colonies, removing them from the current struggle.

One had always been friendly with Pierre and the Head Butler, placing him firmly in the pro-Michael faction.

The other position had belonged to Brock.

After Brock died, a politically neutral knight had been selected as the new Deputy Commander.

Now both remaining Deputy Commanders had switched sides.

Twenty knights stationed around the lord’s castle followed those two.

Ten more knights had arrived with branch-family nobles.

Eric had declared seven knights at the inspection point.

Then intelligence arrived that both the former Guard Captain and the current Cavalry Commander had joined Eric’s side.

Cain had always ignored factional loyalties among ordinary soldiers.

That effectively meant almost every soldier stationed around the lord’s castle now supported Eric.

We have twenty knights. They have at least thirty-seven plus soldiers. Numerically, we are at a disadvantage. I am a Sword Master, but if this becomes a chaotic melee, I cannot predict the result.

A Sword Master was powerful.

But if a street battle broke out around buildings and narrow roads,

even a Sword Master could exhaust himself and get cut by a blind sword.

Eric’s own knights were another unknown variable.

Cain did not understand how they had done it,

but Marcel’s knights had slaughtered four Upper-rank Sword Experts and one Mid-rank Sword Expert.

There might be an unknown high-level knight among them.

Cain silently thought.

The reporting knight cautiously spoke.

“Commander, the knights are becoming restless. Please give us a direction quickly...”

What he could not bring himself to say was,

some knights were already talking about running away if their side started losing.

Still, the meaning reached Cain.

Cain rose.

“I will meet the Count.”

“The Count?”

If Cain could pull Michael to his side, the game would end.

Westfalen had a pro-Michael faction.

There was no such thing as a pro-Eric faction.

But unless Michael was a complete idiot, there was no reason he would support Cain.

Even so, Cain thought the gamble was worth taking.

Michael is the biggest idiot of all. I should at least try.

Cain immediately headed toward the Count’s office.

* * *

Count Michael almost laughed when Cain entered.

It was absurd enough that Cain openly placed a death list signed by Lorian in front of him.

Then Cain even offered him an obviously useless carrot.

“...So if Your Lordship supports me, I will offer my daughter to you. You will also gain the loyalty of the knight order. You will finally become the true ruler of Westfalen.”

Michael could no longer hold back.

“Heh. Hehehe. Hahahahahaha!”

Cain stared in confusion.

Michael laughed for a long time.

Tears even appeared in his eyes.

“Damn, that was so funny I’m crying. Hey, you knight nobody. What do you think a noble is?”

Cain thought the tone was extremely disrespectful.

Still, he did not show it.

“The former Count is gone. Noah is gone. So who am I now?”

Michael stood.

He approached Cain.

Then he repeatedly tapped Cain’s chest with one finger.

“I am already the true lord of this land. What exactly do you think I am?”

Michael pulled the longsword from Cain’s waist.

It was the sword Michael himself had presented when appointing Cain as Knight Commander.

Clang.

He threw it onto the floor.

“Sir Cain, I reject your oath of loyalty. Go home.”

“......”

“Didn’t you hear me? You’re fired. Get out!”

Cain slowly spoke.

“...Aren’t you bluffing a little too much?”

“Bluffing?”

“If you truly had that much power, then when the former Count was placed under house arrest and Noah died, why did you remain silent? Was it not because you had no power? Everyone in office follows Lorian. Nobody follows you.”

BOOM!

Michael exploded with anger.

He raised his aura and smashed the desk in half.

The Head Butler closed his eyes in pain.

He was already calculating the cost of yet another desk.

“Let us see if you can still say that after Eric cuts off your head, Cain!”

“Eric? You are already communicating with Eric?”

Cain looked at the Head Butler.

The Head Butler quietly turned his face away.

Apparently, Eric’s messenger had already visited him.

Eric, you bastard. Already...

Cain let out a hollow laugh.

“Heh. Hehehe. Hehehehe. Michael Westfalen, listen carefully. I will turn you into a useless old man locked in a back room. I will cut off Eric’s head and the heads of every one of your mistresses. Then we will see whether you can still raise that pathetic aura.”

Michael flinched under the pressure of a Sword Master.

Cain turned and left.

The discarded longsword remained on the floor.

It looked almost like a symbol of their completely broken relationship.

* * *

Cain returned to the knight order headquarters and summoned his men.

He was running out of time.

Only one method remained.

“Find Deputy Commander Heinrich. Whoever finds him, tell him I want to meet.”

Heinrich was the neutral Deputy Commander.

Cain’s goal was to recruit him.

If even a few neutral knights switched sides, Cain could overcome the numerical disadvantage.

“Commander, simple words will not be enough. You need to offer him something.”

“He will become the next Knight Commander. He can also take the manor of one of the branch-family heads supporting the enemy. Tell him that.”

The offer was shocking.

So shocking that even Cain’s own knights became restless.

Nothing similar had been promised to them.

Cain noticed.

So he added another carrot.

“You will also divide the estates of the enemy quasi-nobles among yourselves. You may choose their daughters too. Understood?”

Only then did the knights relax.

They answered loudly.

“Yes, Commander!”

And so the negotiation between Deputy Commander Heinrich and Commander Cain began.

* * *

Heinrich joined Cain with fifteen knights.

His original neutral faction had contained only around eight.

But once it looked like the balance between both sides might reverse, several knights defected purely to save their own lives.

Now the pro-Michael faction had twenty-one knights.

Cain’s faction had thirty-six.

Even including Eric and his two ghouls,

the count was twenty-four against thirty-six.

This would be a knight-against-knight battle in the middle of a city.

Even creating golems might not help much.

Westfalen’s knights were powerful.

And Cain himself was a Sword Master.

Nobody knew how many men he was worth.

Even if Eric threw ordinary soldiers into the fight like disposable goblins,

Cain’s faction clearly possessed greater physical combat power.

Heinrich used the favorable situation to push further.

He handed Cain a written contract prepared in advance.

It formally guaranteed the Knight Commander position and manor Cain had offered.

Cain disliked Heinrich for demanding written confirmation.

But he could not refuse.

Many knights were watching.

Cain signed.

Heinrich smiled.

“Commander, the promise of a noble is a serious matter. I hope I never need to present this contract to you.”

“A noble? Are you calling me a noble?”

“Of course. You will soon become Count Michael’s father-in-law. That practically makes you a noble.”

Cain did not know how Heinrich had guessed his secret plan.

But the flattery felt excellent.

That’s right! I’m practically a noble already. Eric, you little brat. This is battle. This is nobility. This is politics. What are you going to do now? Hehehe.

Cain shook Heinrich’s hand.

Thirty-six knights looked forward to the coming battle as though it were a blessing from the gods.

Sweet rewards waited after victory.

* * *

Dawn.

The first light was beginning to appear.

Cain’s faction gathered at the knight order headquarters and prepared for battle.

According to their intelligence, Eric and the pro-Michael knights planned to attack the knight order building with every available soldier.

Cain assembled everyone.

He inspected the barricades outside the building and shouted.

“Do not relax simply because we have more knights! The rebels will throw soldiers at us and attack with everything they have! Stay alert!”

He and Heinrich reviewed their defensive tactics.

They would use their numerical advantage in knights to force a war of attrition.

Then they would launch a full counterattack.

“I will personally lead the counterattack.”

“Hahaha. At this rate, the battle will end before I even get a chance to fight.”

The two laughed as they waited for Eric.

Several hours passed.

Nobody came.

The knights gradually became nervous.

Cain stared at the training ground outside.

“Was our intelligence wrong? Is the attack not today?”

Then one knight shouted.

“The lord’s residence! Look at the lord’s residence!”
