Chapter 50

Chapter 50

“I understand. Thank you for answering.”

I had no idea how the doctor interpreted my words.

But instead of questioning me further, he changed the subject.

“I understand now that your condition isn't immediately dangerous. Still, my skill could theoretically be wrong, so you need another full examination. Even if nothing appears wrong now, your condition could suddenly worsen. I can't discharge you immediately.”

“...How long will it take?”

“If every test comes back normal and your condition remains stable for the next few days, you should be able to leave in three or four days.”

Three or four days isn't too bad.

I reluctantly nodded.

“Okay.”

“There probably won't be a major issue. Ah, I'll remove the bandages.”

The doctor smiled bitterly and began unwinding the bandages around me.

By the time he finished, I quietly sighed in relief.

“I'll be going now. If you experience even the smallest problem, tell us immediately.”

He gave a light bow and approached the door.

I thought he was leaving.

Then he seemed to remember something.

He came back and pulled something from his coat.

A business card.

“This might be unnecessary advice, but from what I understand, Hunters never know when something might happen to them. Rather than continuing such dangerous work, you might consider working in the medical field.”

There was only one reason he would bring that up right now.

“The pay is fairly good too, especially because not everyone can do it.”

My eyes widened slightly at the unexpected suggestion.

“I just wanted you to know that option exists. Get some rest.”

I watched him leave while rubbing the business card between my fingers.

...That actually doesn't sound bad.

Doctors had the reputation of earning a lot of money.

I had never been especially gifted academically, so becoming a doctor had always felt completely outside my reach.

After retiring as a Hunter, I'd have to decide whether to return to school or find a job anyway.

If I could use my Hunter abilities in a field that paid more...

That didn't sound bad.

I'll think about it later.

I placed the business card, which had the name Oh Minwoo written on it, on the bedside table.

Then Han Siwoo spoke quietly.

“You know... I was a little scared.”

He sat on the small chair beside the bed and stared at the floor.

“I thought you might never wake up.”

His emotionless voice somehow sounded like he was holding something back.

“I feel like I had a lot I wanted to say when you opened your eyes. But now that you're awake, I don't even know what to say.”

I fidgeted with my fingers awkwardly.

My chest felt strange.

Almost ticklish.

Or maybe unsettled.

“I still remember this, though.”

Han Siwoo finally lifted his head and looked at me.

This time, I was the one who looked away.

“Thank you for waking up.”

I didn't know what to say.

So I stayed silent.

Still...

It didn't feel bad.

It felt as though something indescribable had filled my chest.

Han Siwoo didn't seem to expect an answer anyway.

The conversation ended there.

The silence I created stretched on.

It wasn't uncomfortable.

It felt like the quiet of an ordinary lazy afternoon.

When the peaceful silence started becoming awkward again, I carefully spoke.

“Have you seen my phone?”

Han Siwoo stared at me in amazement.

Then he silently laughed.

“Can you stop looking at your phone even now? Jihoon hyung probably has it.”

“Why does Oppa have someone else's phone? What am I supposed to do in a hospital room without it...?”

I frowned.

Han Siwoo pressed his thumb against the space between my eyebrows and smoothed out the wrinkle.

“Stop frowning.”

“I can't even control my own face now?”

“You only just realized?”

“Hey!”

His hand, which had seemed to be pressing my forehead, suddenly pushed my whole face backward.

My head jerked back slightly.

I stared at him in disbelief.

What was he, an elementary school kid?

A laugh escaped me.

Then another.

Eventually, I burst out laughing.

Han Siwoo did too.

Nothing about the situation was particularly funny.

Still, for some reason, we kept laughing for quite a while.

Thinking about it...

We used to act like this often.

After the world changed, ordinary moments like these disappeared.

I was briefly lost in nostalgia when...

BANG!

“Kim Jia!”

“Noona!”

My brother and Lee Junhyuk rushed into the hospital room.

Seriously.

Speak of the devil.

My brother hurried toward me.

I shamelessly held out my hand.

“Oppa. My phone.”

He completely ignored my hand and stared at me with a serious expression.

“You! You...!”

His mouth opened and closed like a fish.

Eventually, apparently unable to speak, he shut it again.

I stared at him.

He had clearly run here.

His already terrible hair looked even worse.

Come to think of it, he had been injured back then too.

Was he okay now?

Useless thoughts wandered through my head.

“Why did you do that?”

“Are your injuries okay?”

We spoke at the exact same time.

I closed my mouth and simply looked at him.

My brother looked angry.

But strangely, his anger didn't seem directed at me.

His face twisted as though he was swallowing frustration.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

“Did you trust us that little?”

“...”

“Do you know you almost died?”

Of course I knew.

I had done it while fully aware.

Honestly, I had wondered sometimes.

If I died while saving my teammates, how would they react?

The novel only showed fragments.

There were occasional lines about them remembering me and blaming themselves.

But that wasn't enough.

I had reread the book many times.

Still, what I wanted to know wasn't there.

I had wondered what it would feel like if I truly belonged among them.

So this is what it feels like.

I was happy.

Relieved that the crisis had passed.

And at the same time, slightly sad because I felt guilty for making them worry.

I knew I hadn't done anything wrong.

In the end, I didn't regret stepping forward.

Because I did, everyone survived.

And yet...

For some reason, I couldn't look them directly in the eyes.

I lowered my head slightly.

Then a voice came from above me.

“You know... I wanted to be someone impressive.”

The calm, dry voice belonged to Lee Junhyuk.

“I always wanted to be the main character wherever I went. But back then, I felt like a complete extra.”

I didn't really understand what he meant by 'main character' and 'extra.'

Still, Lee Junhyuk looked more serious than I had ever seen him.

“I never wanted to feel like that again. But what I felt this time was even worse. So bad I never want to feel it again.”

Back then?

I didn't know what event he meant.

It didn't sound like something I knew.

The baseball cap in his hands slowly crumpled under his grip.

“You know that feeling when you feel completely useless? Like you're nothing but a burden? That shitty feeling?”

His dry voice gradually became wet with emotion.

I still didn't fully understand.

But I understood one thing.

Lee Junhyuk was showing us his true feelings for the first time.

The same Lee Junhyuk who had always acted like an outsider in the party.

Realizing that made me feel strange.

I quietly said,

“I'm sorry.”

Instinct told me that probably wasn't the right thing to say.

But I wanted to say it anyway.

As expected, the backlash came immediately.

“Hey. You think I wanted to hear that from you?”

“Noona, you seriously know how to make someone feel even more miserable.”

“Hmm... sorry about that too.”

I scratched my cheek.

But what else could I say besides sorry?

A sigh fell over me as I lowered my head like a criminal.

“Haa. Forget it. Let's stop talking. More importantly, why are your bandages already off? How's your body?”

The conversation finally returned to something normal.

I raised my head and smiled slightly.

“They removed them because I'm fine. I'm okay now. What about you?”

“What... Ah. That? That was forever ago. I'm already healed.”

“That's good.”

Yes.

It really was good.

Everyone was alive.

“Noona, you're really okay? You were unconscious for a month.”

“I may not look like it, but I'm a healer. I can take care of my own body.”

“And yet you were unconscious for a month?”

Why was my brother complaining even after I woke up?

At this point, maybe he had secretly wanted me to stay asleep.

While I glared at him, something was held out in front of me.

The Red Orb.

“Honestly, I'm not that grateful... but I was a little grateful this time. Here. I'm giving it back.”

Grateful?

Was I really hearing Lee Junhyuk say that while I was still alive?

“Take it already.”

Apparently frustrated because I was staring blankly, Lee Junhyuk placed the Red Orb directly into my hand.

Then he turned toward the door.

“I came here from my part-time job, so I'm busy. I'm leaving.”

He pulled the baseball cap down over his face and left the room.

After Lee Junhyuk left, the other two focused on me again.

“Kim Jia. I don't want you pushing yourself alone anymore.”

“Exactly. Who did you get this recklessness from? Do you have ten lives or something?”

Not ten.

But it had felt like I had around three at one point.

“You won't do it again, right?”

I quietly looked away.

Han Siwoo followed my gaze stubbornly.

His eyes made it obvious he wouldn't let this go without a clear answer.

...I've already finished what I needed to do.

There shouldn't be anything else that forces me to take risks, right?

After a brief hesitation, I answered.

“Well... yeah.”

“Keep that promise. If you ever do something like that again, seriously...”

Han Siwoo's face twisted painfully.

I answered with a sigh.
