Chapter 13

Chapter 13

"It's a beautiful mansion. Why would anyone leave it abandoned like this?"

Even Jessica, seeing it for the first time, thought the building looked far too good to waste.

Because my guardian sent the only surviving son to the Imperial Capital after the accident.

Jake answered silently as he climbed down from the wagon.

After sending Jake to the capital, Baron Valentino had dismissed every remaining servant.

He collected the tenant fees separately through an agent.

As a result...

No one remained in the house.

It had been abandoned ever since.

Seeing Jake's distant expression...

Jessica's imagination immediately created another dramatic story.

The last survivor of a noble family destroyed after being falsely accused.

A boy who discovered the location of a hidden dungeon inside the family library.

He secretly fled toward the Great Forest while avoiding other nobles.

And along the way...

He stopped at his ruined childhood home...

Jessica's dramatic deduction continued for a while.

Then she saw Jake holding an axe.

Her imaginary story abruptly ended.

Jake had picked up an old axe lying in front of the house and entered the mansion.

"Let's sleep inside tonight."

He glanced back.

"I'll prepare some firewood, so please take care of the wagon."

Come to think of it...

The sun was already going down.

There was a small village beneath the distant hill.

But there probably was no proper inn there.

Sleeping inside the mansion was not a bad choice.

"Tch. So you just picked it as a camping spot?"

Jessica shook her head.

"The last son of a destroyed noble family... What a childish thing to imagine."

Then she paused.

"But are there trees inside the house?"

At this point...

Jessica had mostly given up trying to guess Jake's background.

So the ridiculous story she had just imagined quickly vanished from her mind.

A short while later...

Jessica put the wagon inside the half-collapsed stable.

When she entered the mansion...

She heard the sound of wood being chopped somewhere deeper inside.

Following the noise...

She found Jake in what looked like a study.

He was smashing apart an elegant old desk.

"Whaaat?!"

Jessica stared.

"That's good furniture! Why are you breaking it?"

Even at a glance...

The desk looked ancient and refined.

To Jessica, it seemed like something that could sell for a considerable amount of money.

Jake shook his head.

"It can't be sold anyway."

He pointed toward the wood.

"The family crest is engraved into it. Other nobles wouldn't buy it."

"And if the crest was carved out, it would lose most of its value."

Jake lifted the axe again.

"Since it was abandoned together with this building, the only useful thing left is burning it."

Jessica unconsciously nodded at the unnecessarily detailed explanation.

Even after leaving the room...

She continued tilting her head.

"He really knows everything."

Then another thought appeared.

"But is it actually okay to smash noble furniture like that?"

Still...

If she asked, Jake would probably only say it was fine.

Jessica gave up and headed toward the main hall.

Since they were going to sleep in an abandoned house...

She needed to check the fireplace.

Back in the study...

Jake stopped chopping for a moment.

He stared bitterly at his father's desk.

This was already the second time he had destroyed it.

The first time had been far in the future.

He had briefly returned to this house with a group of fugitives.

At that time...

He had also destroyed the desk to make firewood.

They had needed plenty of fuel.

So they had smashed apart not only the desk but most of the furniture in the house.

Now...

He was destroying his father's desk for the second time.

But this time...

It was not actually because he needed firewood.

Jake lifted the axe again.

He began smashing the desk.

The desk had been made from solid hardwood.

Only after many heavy blows did it finally split in half.

Crack!

The desk fell apart toward both sides.

And then...

Clatter, clatter, clatter!

Silver coins poured from inside.

After Jake's parents died in the carriage accident...

Baron Valentino had rushed to the estate.

Jake himself was still unconscious.

The baron quickly became his guardian.

Claiming that Jake needed treatment...

He sent him to the Imperial Capital by carriage.

Then...

He dismissed every remaining servant.

After that, Baron Valentino thoroughly searched the mansion.

He was looking for hidden money.

The house and land deeds.

And the noble family seal.

If he wanted to steal away the remaining property before Jake became an adult...

He absolutely needed both the deeds to the leased farmland and the noble seal.

But the baron's search had failed.

He had searched so violently that the mansion looked haunted.

Yet he had found none of the things he wanted.

Because of that...

He had no choice but to remain Jake's guardian until Jake reached adulthood.

As guardian, he could at least continue stealing part of the tenant income.

Even the adult Jake in the future had never found his parents' inheritance.

Because of that...

He had never been able to exercise full ownership over the property.

Still, the tenant fees provided enough money for Jake to live relatively comfortably as a scribe in the capital.

Then...

Years later...

After the capital fell into enemy hands...

Jake returned to this house with members of the imperial family who had become fugitives.

He had deliberately avoided his hometown for years because the memories of his parents and his previous life were painful.

By then...

Even his hometown village had already burned during the war.

Memories mattered less than surviving the cold night.

So...

His father's desk became firewood.

But the desk in the study had contained a hidden drawer Jake did not know about.

Unless someone discovered the hidden locking mechanism...

It could never be opened.

Jake's father had placed the family seal, important documents, and emergency funds inside it.

Only Jake's parents knew the drawer existed.

They had never told their young son.

And because both died at the same time...

The drawer remained unopened for many years.

In the future...

Jake only discovered his parents' inheritance because he had smashed the desk apart.

Unfortunately...

Both then and now...

Jake had no idea how to locate the hidden unlocking mechanism.

So there was only one method.

Brute force with an axe.

Just as he had done in the future...

He destroyed his father's desk again.

Money and documents were scattered across the floor.

Jake swept the shillings into a pouch he had prepared.

He also placed the land deeds and the ring engraved with the family seal inside his clothes.

Unlike the money...

The deeds and seal were useless for the moment.

Jake was officially dead.

He could not simply reveal himself, sell the land, or demand tenant payments.

Still...

He had no intention of hiding his name forever.

To openly use it again...

The empire itself would probably need to be overturned.

Jake intended to make that day happen eventually.

For now, this money will help.

After paying Jessica's escort fee...

Travel expenses to the Great Forest...

The horse...

The wagon...

And other costs...

Jake did not have much money remaining.

If he arrived penniless...

Forget exploring dungeons.

He would first have to worry about how to feed himself.

That was why Jake had separated from Rachel's group and come to his childhood home.

Reality always comes down to money.

Technically...

It felt a little like robbing his dead parents' hidden inheritance.

But as long as the result was good...

Everything was fine.

The family seal.

The land deeds.

And a large amount of money.

Jake could only thank his late parents.

"Did you finish making the firewood?"

Jessica's voice came from beyond the corridor.

Jake, who had briefly become lost in emotion, raised the axe again.

Now...

It was time to actually make firewood.

CRACK!

The main hall showed exactly how thoroughly Baron Valentino had searched the mansion.

Jake and Jessica had to push piles of debris aside.

Afterward...

They ate dinner and spread blankets separately on the floor.

For the first time in years...

The fireplace burned expensive furniture and warmed the room.

Jessica, happy to sleep indoors after so long, patted her stomach with satisfaction.

Dinner had been ordinary soup and dry bread.

Still...

Eating it inside a real house somehow made it taste better.

"But how did you know about this house?"

Jessica asked.

She had quickly abandoned the idea that Jake was the son of this mansion.

Still...

She did not believe he had arrived here by accident.

Jake had guided the wagon directly to the house.

And if he knew nothing about it...

There was no way he would confidently walk inside carrying an axe.

"..."

Jessica clicked her tongue.

"Tch. Another secret."

At this point...

She roughly understood which subjects Jake considered private.

His personality was not bad.

He was strangely talented at almost everything.

He often acted like an old man despite being young.

But he never revealed anything about his identity or past.

For an employer and mercenary...

That was perfectly acceptable.

But Jessica felt that after traveling alone together for so long, they had become fairly close.

So it disappointed her.

She wondered if she was simply being overly friendly because she unconsciously wanted someone to replace the childhood friend she had separated from.

Jake did not find her meddling particularly uncomfortable.

So he simply let it pass.

And today...

His silence was not really about secrecy.

He simply did not feel like answering.

He had come here prepared.

Even so...

Lying down inside the house where he had played since childhood brought far too many memories rushing back.

The night passed inside his abandoned childhood home.

The next morning...

Jessica woke feeling refreshed after sleeping indoors.

Jake woke feeling stiff after tossing and turning all night.

They ate breakfast and left the mansion.

"Tch, tch."

Jessica looked back at the building beneath the sunlight.

"It looks even more wasteful during the day."

She clicked her tongue again at the sight of the old mansion.

Jessica went to the stable and brought out the wagon.

Jake looked back at his childhood home one final time before climbing up beside her.

He probably would not be able to return for a very long time.

In his future memories...

He had stayed away by choice.

Now...

He truly could not come back.

Knowing that made the final sight of the house feel incredibly lonely.

The wagon left the estate and turned west.

If they traveled farther south...

They would reach the village where Jake's childhood friends lived.

Jake deliberately avoided that route.

That was when Jessica, who was driving, suddenly looked ahead with an oddly pleased expression.

"Oh?"

She grinned.

"Is this the first attack during this escort?"

Two people had suddenly burst from the forest beside the road and were running toward the wagon.

Fortunately...

Or unfortunately...

They were still fairly far away.

It would take them some time to reach the wagon.

"Are ambushes these days done by a man and woman running hand in hand without weapons and wearing half-torn clothes?"

Jake asked.

Jessica drew her sword.

"Maybe it's some new kind of bandit strategy."

After so long without anything happening...

Jessica seemed almost happy that something interesting had appeared.

"They're probably running over to ask for help, right?"

"I just hope this doesn't become annoying."

Jake drew back the string on his crossbow.

Jessica sounded slightly worried.

The man and woman looked desperate.

They were clearly being chased by something.

They were still fairly close to the Imperial Capital, so there probably was not much danger.

Still...

Mercenary work could become dangerous without warning.

"If it gets too troublesome, we can always pretend we didn't see them."

That's going to be difficult.

Jake shook his head inwardly at Jessica's words.

She was prioritizing him as her employer.

But Jake could not ignore the approaching pair.

They were near his hometown.

It would have been difficult for Jake not to recognize people from around here.

And he had already realized at a glance...

They were his childhood friends.

There was no way he could abandon them.

"GRAAAR!"

At the same time Jake raised his crossbow...

A massive wild dog burst from behind the fleeing pair.

"Damn."

Jessica narrowed her eyes.

"That's a wild dog turning into a magical beast."

It was far larger than an ordinary wild dog.

Almost the size of a leopard or a huge wolf.

Saliva dripped from its mouth.

Its eyes were bloodshot red.

It had been corrupted by mana.

Unlike Earth...

This world was filled with mana.

Some monsters were born with mana inside their bodies.

And ordinary animals could also become magical beasts after being contaminated by it.

Humans learned to accept mana in controlled ways.

Animals overwhelmed by mana often lost their reason and attacked people.

"Aaah!"

The woman running away while holding the man's hand finally fell.

The man stopped.

He moved in front of her.

Jessica frowned.

Then she leaped from the wagon.

"Why does trouble always happen like this?!"

Even in the sudden chaos...

Jake's expression did not change.

No wind.

Distance, thirty meters.

Hold my breath...

Jake pulled the trigger.

WHOOSH!

The bolt flew.
