Chapter 24

Chapter 24

The brightly glowing underground chamber suddenly went dark.

Jake had experienced the exact same thing not long ago.

Or rather...

A very long time ago.

It had happened beneath the Imperial Palace.

The life he had experienced there...

Jake grabbed the Ego Wand with a distorted expression.

-It's a small-scale Reality Replication Magic Circle.

Fatima explained kindly after Jake supplied mana.

-Because it was designed for research, it only replicates the underground laboratory.

-The maximum duration is one year.

-But for magical training, there's nothing better.

Jake's expression did not change.

The duration was shorter.

The range was smaller.

But just as he feared...

He had been caught in the same kind of magic.

-This is another world created entirely from mana.

-It can only exist for one year, but you can complete any training you need during that time.

-One year later, you'll return to this exact moment while keeping the memories of everything you experienced here.

-Time inside has been accelerated hundreds of thousands of times.

-To the outside world, almost no time will have passed.

Apparently, Fatima noticed Jake's mood turning worse.

She quickly explained the nature of the world.

But even without her explanation...

Jake already understood this kind of world far too well.

He had entered one before.

Not a small region such as a dungeon...

But an entire copy of this world, or perhaps the whole planet.

And he had lived there for decades.

Jake turned around.

Jessica had been dragged into this world with him.

-What happens to the companion who entered with me?

-Oh.

-There were other people inside the dungeon, weren't there?

-After one year, they'll disappear along with the replicated dungeon.

Fatima corrected herself.

-Or more accurately...

-When you return to the original timeline, they won't remember what happened here.

-Other people?

-This entire research facility was replicated.

-Anyone who entered other sections would have been copied as well.

"My god."

It was not merely the dungeon Jake and Jessica entered.

The massive dungeon next door had also been copied.

The expedition members Jake saw in the illusion earlier...

Had not been a mistake.

Every expedition member inside the dungeon had been dragged into the replication.

"Did something go wrong?"

Jessica looked worried.

She seemed to think the magic itself had malfunctioned.

Jake decided to tell her everything.

You're only telling her because she won't remember after we return, aren't you?

Another version of himself seemed to mock him from within.

Jake accepted the criticism.

Then he spoke.

"Please don't be shocked."

"Listen until I finish."

Jake told Jessica everything...

Except that he had reincarnated from another world.

He started with being born into a low-ranking noble family.

Becoming an apprentice scribe.

What happened beneath the Imperial Palace.

Living an entire lifetime inside the magical world.

Escaping from the palace afterward.

Meeting Jessica.

Traveling all the way here.

Jake told her everything that had happened since he had been born in this world.

Jessica became completely confused.

No...

Her expression honestly looked as if she no longer understood what anything meant.

Jake's explanation exceeded every wild theory Jessica had ever imagined about him.

By several times.

If he had mentioned reincarnation too...

She might have simply decided he was insane.

In the end...

Jake had to explain everything several times.

Only then did Jessica barely manage to understand.

"So..."

Jessica carefully asked,

"Jake isn't just a little old man."

"You're actually a grandfather... sir?"

Jake shook his head.

"I only have the memories."

"Treat me like you always have."

"And I'm officially dead, so you don't have to treat me like a noble either."

Jessica breathed a huge sigh of relief.

"Thank goodness."

"I was seriously worried things were going to become awkward between us."

At last...

Jessica could understand Jake's strange behavior.

His broad knowledge.

His social skills.

His refined manners.

His survival ability.

And the way he constantly acted as if he already knew what would happen.

Then...

She became extremely happy about the future of her childhood friend.

"Then Conrad becomes a Great Sword Master in the future!"

"That's amazing!"

Unfortunately...

The future had already changed.

Jake no longer knew whether Conrad would truly become a Great Sword Master.

Still...

He saw no reason to ruin Jessica's happiness.

Conrad had already achieved his dream of becoming a knight.

Even if he never became a Great Sword Master...

That alone was enough.

"The problem is that we're trapped here now, right?"

"Yes."

Jake nodded.

"We're stuck inside this dungeon for one full year."

"Of course, we could just kill ourselves and end it early..."

"But that's not exactly realistic."

Even if Jessica believed Jake...

Believing him enough to commit suicide was another matter.

And Jessica had absolutely no intention of killing herself.

"We basically received one extra year of life."

Jessica shrugged.

"Even if we die, we'll come back."

"It's a shame I won't remember anything, but you'll remember."

"So it doesn't really matter."

Perhaps because of her naturally cheerful personality...

Or simply because she had never experienced such a world before...

Jessica accepted the situation surprisingly easily.

Or perhaps...

Because this would help Jake.

Once she understood everything...

She worried less about the magic and more about how they would survive the next year.

"Jake can spend the year training magic."

"We can get water from the pool we came through."

"Hmm..."

"Then food is probably the problem."

"There weren't any animals or monsters in our dungeon..."

Fortunately...

Fatima claimed there was a solution.

A huge food storage facility had been built in another section of the dungeon long ago.

Preservation magic had been cast over it.

Fatima believed the food might still be safe.

But so much time had passed...

They would need to check.

Before that...

There was one more thing Jessica needed to know.

The expedition team inside the larger dungeon had also been caught in the replication.

Naturally...

Jessica's eyes widened.

And then...

Time passed.

One year later.

The final day of the replicated world.

Jake stood before two piles of stones.

There were no names carved into them.

But Jake had carefully built them as graves.

Jessica's grave.

And Amber's.

Amber had helped him study magic.

Jessica had struggled for Jake until the very end.

Of course...

Their deaths had occurred only inside a one-year replicated world.

But to Jake...

They felt no different from real deaths.

"Still..."

"I'll be able to see them again soon."

They would not remember anything that had happened here.

But even so...

The thought of seeing people who had died again was deeply emotional.

-It's almost time.

Fatima, who had spent the entire year teaching him magic, calmly informed him that the world was about to disappear.

"You won't remember either?"

-Unfortunately, no.

-The memory transfer function of this magic circle was designed for humans.

Jake had hoped even Fatima might remember.

But the memories of this world would belong to Jake alone.

-Still...

-You've become far stronger than our original target.

-No magical technician will be able to look down on you now.

"They'd better not."

Jake stared at the graves.

"That's why all of us suffered so much for an entire year."

The other two women had suffered alongside Jake.

And in the end...

Neither had lived long enough to receive any reward.

Jake looked around one final time.

Two graves made from stacked stones.

Magic items scattered around the area.

And behind him...

Countless hard monster shells piled high.

This was where Jake had lived alone after both women died.

Now...

It was time to return.

As Jake looked back over the past year one final time...

Fatima spoke.

-You worked hard, Mage Jake.

At that moment...

The world collapsed.

"Wake up!"

"Jake!"

"Why won't this thing come off?!"

"Ah!"

"It came off!"

When Jake regained consciousness...

The first thing he saw was Jessica, nearly in tears, shaking him violently.

The next thing he felt...

Was the throbbing pain in both cheeks.

"You don't need to shake me."

Jake spoke weakly.

"I'm fine."

"Whoa!"

"You're okay?!"

Jessica immediately began talking at incredible speed.

"You scared the hell out of me!"

"You just froze while your hand was touching the magic circle!"

"I couldn't even pull your hand away!"

"I thought some petrification spell had hit you!"

Jake silently looked at Jessica as she continued rambling.

"And then I even tried taking that weird noisy wand away from you, but..."

Jessica stopped.

She tilted her head at Jake.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Instead of answering...

Jake pulled Jessica into his arms.

"Eek!"

Jessica screamed in surprise.

But when Jake whispered softly...

She could not bring herself to push him away.

"Thank you."

"I'm glad I could see you again."

The emotion in his voice left Jessica completely confused.

Still...

She decided to wait for him to explain.

After a while...

Jake released her.

Then he stared at her and smiled.

"What happened?"

Jessica looked worried.

"The magic didn't go wrong, did it?"

Those were almost exactly the same words she had spoken long ago...

Inside the replicated world.

Jake smiled again.

Then he took Jessica's hand and helped her sit.

During that year...

Jessica had truly done everything she could for him.

Even after learning all of his secrets...

She had not changed.

And in the end...

She had died protecting him.

Whether she had originally treated Jake as a replacement for her childhood friend no longer mattered.

When Jessica died...

Jake had decided that once they returned, he would tell her everything.

And now...

He did.

"Please don't be shocked."

"Listen until I finish."

He began with exactly the same words he had used before.

Jessica's reaction was similar.

If anything...

She had even more trouble understanding this time.

Jake had to explain everything several more times.

Finally...

He needed to provide proof.

"Wait here for a moment."

Jake told Jessica to wait.

Then he spoke to Fatima.

-I'm back.

-Did it go well?

-No problems, right?

Fatima sounded strangely proud of herself.

A vein throbbed on Jake's forehead.

-No problems?

-I have a lot to say.

-But first, let's synchronize.

-You've become a mage!

-Wonderful!

-Let's begin immediately!

Fatima became so excited at the idea of synchronization...

She completely failed to notice Jake's anger.

Jake wanted to complain about everything she had put him through.

But first...

Synchronization came first.

Synchronization.

It was the magical link between a mage and the ego inside an Ego Item.

It allowed the Ego Item to share its user's five senses.

Beyond that...

It was also the contract through which the user became the item's true owner.

Without synchronization...

An Ego Item could not properly perceive the outside world.

That was why Fatima had been in such a hurry to turn Jake into a mage.

And because of that...

Jake had suffered like hell for one entire year inside the replicated world.

Jake opened his hand.

Then he began sensing mana.

One year of magical training had transformed him into a proper ancient mage.

If Jake had been a modern mage who stored mana inside mana circles within the body...

He would have returned to his original state without a single trace of mana inside him.

He would have been unable to use magic.

But Jake had trained in ancient magic.

That did not matter at all.

What a true mage needed...

Was will.

Knowledge.

And belief.

Mana was merely something borrowed from the world.

Everything Jake had learned and realized during the past year remained inside his mind.

All he needed was a short moment to awaken his senses again.

"I, Mage Jake, form a contract with Fatima in the name of mana."

Jake gathered mana and declared his will to the world.

Mana moved according to his will.

Magic arranged itself through his words.

-I, Fatima, form a contract with Mage Jake in the name of mana.

With Fatima's declaration...

The magic took effect.

Blue light flowed from Jake's body and the wand.

A moment later...

Jake could hear Fatima's voice without any translation spell.

-Wow.

-How long has it been since I last saw the world?

"It'll take me a little time to recover my full ability."

-What?!

-You're already incredible!

-You're much better than I expected!

Jake merely shrugged at Fatima's surprise.

He had heard that praise countless times inside the replicated world.

It no longer affected him much.

"Don't tell me..."

Jessica stood frozen in shock.

"Did you really become a mage?"

More importantly...

Jake needed to reassure his stunned companion.

"Yes."

Jake grinned at Jessica.

"I'm a mage."
