Chapter 15

Chapter 15

Woo Min-cheol led them underground.

The area had originally been used as a parking garage.

After buying the entire building, he converted the parking area into a laboratory.

"More importantly, why is that guy following you?"

Woo Min-cheol looked at Jang Byeong-jun, who stood behind Seong-un with his arms crossed while observing the surroundings.

"He's the money."

Ten billion won.

And the source of that enormous sum was apparently the man behind him.

The aura around Jang Byeong-jun was anything but ordinary.

He had probably climbed to at least Floor 15.

Woo Min-cheol decided not to care.

All he needed to do was hand over the elixir and receive the money.

He picked up a glass bottle filled with purple liquid and handed it to Seong-un.

"This is it."

So this was Tears of Bellos.

The name came from combining poison extracted from a venomous snake called Bella and a highly poisonous toad called Rosto.

It's still incomplete, though.

Seong-un already knew that Tears of Bellos wasn't finished.

If I remember correctly, he only completes it around the time I originally start climbing.

The reason it remained incomplete for so long was simple.

Woo Min-cheol's recipe wasn't perfect.

Breath of Illipia.

Breath of Illipia possessed healing power.

Healing in an elixir whose main focus was poison?

Ironically, when Illipia's healing energy reacted with Rosto's venom, it amplified the poison's toxicity and lost its own healing properties.

Two years from now, this would become common knowledge.

At the present time, nobody knew.

"Are you sure this works?"

Seong-un looked at the elixir and tilted his head.

"What do you mean?"

"Is this really one hundred percent complete? It doesn't look like it."

Damn it.

How did a brat who hadn't even dried the blood behind his ears figure that out?

Woo Min-cheol decided he needed to push harder.

The one who needed something wasn't him.

It was this brat.

"If you don't want it, give it back!"

"Sure."

Contrary to his expectations, Seong-un agreed without hesitation.

"Huh?"

Woo Min-cheol was the one caught off guard.

"I don't buy elixirs that haven't been properly tested."

"Hah. Are you saying my elixir has a defect?"

"I'll provide the materials."

"What?"

"I came here because I believe in your alchemy, old man. If I provide the materials, you can finish it, right?"

"Well... yes."

Woo Min-cheol nodded without realizing it.

"So it really wasn't complete."

Seong-un chuckled as though he'd known all along.

Only then did Woo Min-cheol realize his mistake.

His face reddened.

"Ahem. So you're saying you'll provide the materials?"

"Yes. But reduce the price to two billion won."

"What?!"

He wanted to cut eight billion from the original ten?

Asking for a reduction of one or two billion might've been understandable.

But eight billion?

That was practically robbery.

Woo Min-cheol was about to explode when Seong-un raised one finger and added another condition.

"From now on, I'll also provide any materials you need at a low price."

"A low price?"

"Yes. I'll arrange it so you can get them at half the market price."

The Association would be paying for all of it.

At the Association's scale, this amount of money was nothing.

"Are you serious?"

Woo Min-cheol's eyes widened.

Aside from Tears of Bellos, he had dozens of unfinished elixirs.

Trial and error was one issue.

But the biggest problem had always been acquiring materials.

If that problem disappeared, and materials became half-price on top of that, he could begin experimenting on all the other elixirs as well.

It was far too sweet an offer to reject.

"Yes. In exchange, let me receive the completed elixirs first. I'll pay a proper price for them."

Woo Min-cheol's alchemy was genuine.

Just like in Seong-un's previous life, those elixirs could dramatically accelerate his climbing speed.

"Fine. We'll do that."

The deal was made.

Interesting.

That was Jang Byeong-jun's brief impression as he watched everything from a short distance away.

Seong-un's behavior was hard to believe for someone who had only just finished Floor 1.

How did he even know about a place like this?

An elixir that increased poison resistance.

Seong-un was probably planning to use it against the Floor 2 boss.

If the effect was powerful enough, the difficulty of Floor 2 would drop significantly.

Could he possibly achieve another unbelievable result?

"Mr. Seong-un."

Jang Byeong-jun approached and spoke quietly.

"Yes. You're wondering how I know all this?"

So he had noticed exactly what Jang Byeong-jun was thinking.

After considering for a moment, Jang Byeong-jun slowly nodded.

"Yes. To be honest, I'm curious."

"It's information I obtained while struggling in many different places because I wanted to survive."

"...I see."

Jang Byeong-jun nodded.

It wasn't a completely satisfying explanation.

But he decided not to press further.

"More importantly, the finances are fine, right?"

The materials alone had cost 2.5 billion won.

Seong-un had also promised to pay another two billion here.

And that wasn't all.

He had promised to provide every material Woo Min-cheol requested at half its current market price.

The Association would have to absorb the entire loss.

Even so, Jang Byeong-jun answered as if it were nothing.

"Of course. This is an investment in you, Mr. Seong-un. This amount is nothing."

Seong-un chuckled.

There's weight behind those words.

From the Tutorial through Floor 1, Seong-un had proven himself clearly enough that the Association was willing to invest billions without hesitation.

If he'd produced disappointing results on Floor 1, they wouldn't have been this bold.

All the more reason to take full advantage of them.

"Learn this properly."

Seong-un turned toward Han Geon-woo, who was standing beside him looking blank.

"Huh? Learn what?"

"Why do you think I brought you all the way here?"

All Han Geon-woo had done was receive materials from the Association and deliver them to Woo Min-cheol.

"Uh... material delivery?"

He squeezed his brain for an answer.

Fortunately, it was correct.

"Exactly. From now on, you'll bring him whatever materials he needs."

"Then when am I supposed to climb...?"

"The Association will help with that."

"Really?"

Han Geon-woo looked desperately toward Jang Byeong-jun.

"...If it's a request from Mr. Seong-un."

Jang Byeong-jun didn't particularly like it.

But if it was for Seong-un, he could invest.

That answer satisfied him.

If Seong-un wanted to make proper use of Han Geon-woo, the man needed to grow to a certain level first.

"Master, you called for me?"

At that moment, the disciple Woo Min-cheol had summoned came down into the underground laboratory.

"Hm?"

Seong-un recognized him immediately.

The crosswalk.

The young man in his twenties who had bumped shoulders with him near the Association.

That man was standing here now.

Ah. So that was Lee Sang-hyeon.

Woo Min-cheol's disciple.

Alchemist Lee Sang-hyeon.

In Seong-un's previous life, the backlash of time and side effects from experiments had hit him badly.

Half his face had melted.

All his hair had fallen out.

And rapid aging had made him look like someone in his early-to-mid fifties.

That was why Seong-un hadn't recognized his younger, perfectly healthy face right away.

"Come here and introduce yourself. These people are going to be our VIP customers from now on."

Woo Min-cheol introduced the group.

Main customer: Seong-un.

Money source: Jang Byeong-jun.

Errand boy: Han Geon-woo.

Woo Min-cheol quietly whispered to Lee Sang-hyeon that Seong-un was the one controlling the money source, so he should stay on Seong-un's good side.

Thanks to Super Sense, Seong-un heard every word.

"Hello. And, um... I'm sorry about what happened before."

At the repeated apology, Seong-un smiled.

"If you're really sorry, then please take good care of me from now on."

There was no downside to building a friendly relationship with Lee Sang-hyeon.

The elixirs he would eventually create would become a tremendous help while climbing the Tower.

"I'll do my best!"

Lee Sang-hyeon answered with perfect discipline.

Two days passed.

Amazing. Not a single one of these materials is useless.

Woo Min-cheol repeatedly admired the rare ingredients Han Geon-woo had delivered.

They were extremely expensive.

More importantly, most were ingredients Woo Min-cheol had already been searching for.

The question was whether these materials could actually complete Tears of Bellos.

As soon as doubt started forming, Woo Min-cheol shook his head.

My pride is on the line. I have to succeed.

The scale of the deal had become too large.

If he failed to prove himself now, the embarrassment would be his alone.

Woo Min-cheol activated a skill.

First was Fruit's Search.

Using this A-rank skill, he examined the properties of each ingredient.

Then he used the S-rank skill Fruit's Combination to calculate the predicted results.

But there was a problem.

No.

No matter how many materials he added to Tears of Bellos, the predicted completion rate never reached one hundred percent.

Had he gotten the mixture wrong from the start?

That couldn't be right.

Tears of Bellos already had a completion rate of ninety percent.

The problem wasn't the combination itself.

Something was missing.

As his doubts continued growing...

[98% (Dangerous)]

A projected value of ninety-eight percent appeared.

What? It's almost complete?

Woo Min-cheol's eyes trembled violently.

Why?

He had been testing every possible combination.

And this time, all he'd done was add Breath of Illipia to the existing recipe.

The completion rate had risen from ninety to ninety-eight percent.

Breath of Illipia possessed healing energy and was normally used to manufacture potions.

Tears of Bellos, on the other hand, represented destruction, damage, and deterioration.

That was why he'd never expected anything from this combination.

How could it create a result like this?

Confused, Woo Min-cheol tried combining Breath of Illipia with several other poisons.

As expected, every result showed zero percent.

Ingredients with completely opposite properties simply couldn't mix.

Fascinating. Why does it react only with Rosto's venom?

Curiosity flashed in Woo Min-cheol's eyes.

Then he immediately began searching through the other ingredients.

He couldn't recklessly proceed merely because they'd reacted.

The result was marked Dangerous.

Nobody knew what would happen if he used that combination as it was.

I need something to act as a bridge.

While searching through the ingredients, Woo Min-cheol's eyes lit up.

He was holding a pure white feather.

A White Fairy Wing Feather.

It possessed neutralizing properties.

Could this stabilize the mixture?

[100% (Safe)]

Correct.

Woo Min-cheol grinned.

The completion rate increased by another two percent, reaching one hundred.

The Dangerous classification disappeared as well.

Tears of Bellos was complete.

Two hours had passed since Woo Min-cheol began researching the elixir.

Nobody knew how long it might take to complete something that had still been unfinished.

Han Geon-woo, who had delivered the materials, declared that he would sit there and wait until it was done.

"Um... Would you like something to drink?"

Lee Sang-hyeon, who had been watching nervously from some distance away, approached cautiously.

"Cola. With ice."

Han Geon-woo forced down his irritation and ordered a cola.

"Understood."

Lee Sang-hyeon left to get it.

Left alone, Han Geon-woo sighed and ran both hands through his hair.

"Haah. Why the hell did he tell me to wait until it's finished?"

Seong-un had ordered him to wait until completion, take the elixir, and return.

Han Geon-woo knew full well that nobody could predict how long an elixir might take to finish.

Depending on an alchemist's ability, completion could take one month.

Several years.

Or it might remain incomplete for the rest of their life.

And Seong-un wanted him to wait until it was finished?

That was practically the same as telling him not to climb the Tower.

"He told me the Association would support me... So when the hell am I supposed to start climbing?"

Just as he fell into depression...

"It's finished!"

Woo Min-cheol appeared.

There was a glass bottle in his hand.

But unlike the purple liquid they'd seen before, this one was bright red.
