Chapter 37

Chapter 37

Barbarians valued tradition and superstition as much as their lives.

Maybe even more.

Among the traditions they considered sacred...

There was one called the Ash Ring.

A public challenge before a bonfire.

For barbarians, asking someone to fight within the Ash Ring was one of the highest forms of praise.

It meant acknowledging the opponent as an equal warrior...

Or even a superior one.

For barbarians who lived and died by pride and honor...

Such a challenge could never be taken lightly.

Karga stepped toward the fire.

“Before this bonfire, I, Karga, warrior of the Volcano Tribe, challenge Zakan, Chief of the Rock Tribe, to a spar!”

Burta immediately looked troubled.

“Karga... Even so, during this meaningful feast, challenging the savior of our Volcano Tribe...”

Karga cut him off with a sly smile.

“Burta.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Did you not say it yourself?”

He pointed toward Zakan.

“You said this young Chief defeated that vicious Varg.”

Then he placed a hand on his own chest.

“You said he was a great warrior who surpassed even me, Karga.”

Karga smiled.

“Then for the pride of the Volcano Tribe, what is wrong with asking that great warrior to teach me something?”

“...”

Burta closed his mouth.

Even from where I sat...

I could clearly see his anger and discomfort.

He had invited us as people to whom he owed his life.

Now Karga was demanding a fight.

But what would happen if Burta used his authority as Chief to forbid it?

It would mean the Chief of the Volcano Tribe publicly admitted that the Rock Tribe’s Chief was too weak and cowardly to face Karga.

It would insult us.

For barbarians who valued honor more than their lives...

There could hardly be a greater humiliation.

Karga turned toward the warriors.

“Is that not right, brothers?”

His voice grew louder.

“For a barbarian, a battle in the Ash Ring is something to be proud of!”

Burta remained silent.

The Volcano Tribe warriors took that silence as permission.

They began pounding spear shafts and axe handles against the ground.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

“KARGA! KARGA!”

“ZAKAN! ZAKAN!”

I rested my chin on one hand and watched Karga.

That snake-like bastard was trying to drag Zakan into a public arena.

He wants to humiliate him.

If Zakan refused...

He would be branded a coward and a fraud.

If he accepted...

Karga would personally crush him.

That would strip away the image of the Rock Tribe’s hero.

At the same time, it would undermine Burta’s judgment for praising us as saviors.

Burta was smart enough to understand that.

That was why his fists were clenched and his expression had become stiff.

But he probably couldn’t find a way out either.

Karga’s challenge perfectly exploited barbarian customs.

There was no loophole.

Karga raised the corner of his mouth.

Then looked directly at Zakan.

“What do you say, Zakan?”

His voice was polite...

But clearly mocking.

“Will you give Karga the opportunity to face that great sword of yours?”

Zakan silently stood.

Of course.

There was no way this stubborn teenage Chief would run from an official challenge issued by another tribe’s second-in-command.

Wait.

What exactly are Karga’s stats?

A sudden feeling of unease struck me.

I quickly looked at him.

“BARBARIAAAAN!”

“WAAAAAH!”

“BARBARIAAAAN!”

The excited Volcano Tribe warriors went wild when I shouted Warrior’s Roar.

They probably thought I was supporting the match.

No.

I’m just using a skill.

[Skill ‘Peeking’ activated.]

I ignored the idiots and focused on the blue window.

==========

Holy shit.

I nearly choked.

I had already guessed he wasn’t ordinary.

This was a brutal Frontier where strength directly meant authority.

Anyone who survived long enough to become the second-in-command of a major tribe had to be powerful.

But Karga was B-Rank.

Strength 69.

Growth 88%.

He was already a nearly complete warrior.

Meanwhile...

Our Zakan had S-Rank potential.

He would eventually become a tyrant powerful enough to chew through the Empire.

But...

He’s still growing!

Right now, Zakan was only a young warrior slightly above D-Rank.

What if he fought Karga now?

I would bet my right wrist that Zakan’s spine would be folded in half within ten seconds.

Zakan opened his mouth.

“Very well, Karga. In the name of the Rock Tribe...”

“Wait!”

Why is he so damn quick?!

Before our fragile little future hero could charge headfirst into disaster...

I grabbed his shoulder and stepped forward.

We needed a way out of this ridiculous difference in strength.

Then...

A brilliant idea struck me.

I can naturally avoid a fight we’re guaranteed to lose...

And get what I want at the same time.

Two birds with one stone.

To overturn this situation...

I needed the Ancestor Spirit.

I began forcing my brain through the most complicated modern knowledge I could remember.

The Maillard reaction threshold at searing temperatures.

Molecular gastronomy pairing principles.

Potato starch gelatinization temperature curves...

I pushed my modern intelligence to the limit.

Now that my Mental Strength had reached 20...

I needed far more logical thinking to trigger the effect than before.

[The barbarian mind resists logical thought.]

The world spun.

My vision shook violently.

An intense wave of dizziness struck me.

My nose tingled.

Then...

Blood flowed.

It ran from my nose and down my chin.

“Gasp!”

Malko immediately screamed.

“The Ancestor Spirit has come to Izak again!”

Perfect timing.

The unbearable headache made my eyes roll upward.

The Volcano Tribe warriors stared in shock.

“H-He really is a Shaman who receives revelations from the Ancestor Spirits!”

“The Ancestor Spirit has descended upon the Rock Tribe’s Shaman!”

“BARBARIAN...!”

The feast that had been roaring with Warrior’s Roars suddenly fell silent.

Then...

The Volcano Tribe barbarians dropped to the ground.

One after another, they bowed.

Ugh.

My head hurts.

I walked into the center of the silent feast.

Blood covered my face.

My eyes rolled upward dramatically.

I raised one hand toward the sky.

“BARBARIAAAAN!”

Then I deepened my voice.

“You foolish children...”

Everyone froze.

“I, Barbarian, am disappointed in you.”

“G-Great trouble!”

Malko looked terrified.

“The Ancestor Spirit is disappointed!”

“Barbarian is angry!”

I pointed a blood-covered finger toward Karga.

“Karga.”

His face stiffened.

“Your desire to receive instruction from the great child of the Rock Tribe is admirable.”

I nodded.

“A spar before the bonfire is indeed a fine tradition.”

Karga seemed slightly relieved.

Then I continued.

“However...”

My voice became colder.

“Your eyes are terribly poor.”

“...?”

I pointed toward myself.

“That night, the one who ended Varg’s life was not Zakan!”

Silence.

“It was this child.”

I struck my chest.

“The Shaman Izak, whom I currently inhabit!”

“...!”

Huh?

Why did Zakan just twitch?

I glanced beside me.

His nostrils were flaring slightly.

What’s wrong with him now?

Anyway...

The feast erupted into whispers.

“The Shaman killed Varg?”

“Not Zakan?”

“Amazing. As expected of someone recognized by Barbarian.”

Karga stared at me again.

Even though Burta had probably told him the truth...

He clearly hadn’t believed it.

Naturally, he must have assumed Zakan, the famous warrior Chief, was the one who killed Varg.

I spread my arms dramatically.

“This tiny space before a bonfire is too humble to prove the greatness of the child I have chosen!”

Karga frowned.

“Too humble?”

He immediately objected.

“A spar within the Ash Ring is an ancient and sacred tradition.”

I knew he’d say that.

I smiled inwardly.

“I do not reject tradition!”

Then I raised my voice.

“I speak of proof before the trials of nature itself!”

Everyone fell silent.

“If you truly wish to test the child I have chosen and the hero of the Rock Tribe...”

I pointed west.

“Why not go to the sacred ground of the Volcano Tribe?”

My voice thundered.

“To the place called hell itself.”

Everyone’s expression changed.

“The Lava Maw.”

The moment that name left my mouth...

Burta and hundreds of Volcano Tribe warriors stared at me in horror.

“No!”

Burta jumped up.

“The Lava Maw is...”

Karga cut him off before he could finish.

“Excellent!”

His eyes gleamed.

“This is a revelation directly given by the Ancestor Spirit!”

Then he shouted,

“Instead of fighting before the bonfire, I will enter the Lava Maw and receive true instruction!”

“WOOOOOOOO!”

“BARBARIAN!”

“BARBARIAN!”

I raised three fingers.

“Three warriors from the Rock Tribe.”

Then three more.

“Three warriors from the Volcano Tribe.”

Everyone listened.

“Enter the Lava Maw.”

I pointed downward.

“Reach its deepest region.”

My voice grew solemn.

“Mine a Dragonblood Stone and return.”

I smiled.

“Whichever group returns first shall be recognized as the true heroes.”

Then I looked directly at Karga.

“Will you accept?”

Karga narrowed his eyes.

For a moment, it looked as though he suspected something.

But his confidence in his home territory quickly won.

“I, Karga, warrior of the Volcano Tribe, accept the will of the Ancestor Spirit.”

He turned toward Zakan with a challenging smile.

Zakan immediately answered.

“I, Zakan, warrior of the Rock Tribe, will follow the will of the Ancestor Spirit.”

Of course our teenage Chief accepted too.

And just like that...

The competition between the Rock Tribe and Volcano Tribe began.

Karga was celebrating inwardly.

The Lava Maw.

What kind of place was it?

A horrifying restricted zone infamous even among the Volcano Tribe.

Poisonous gas poured from cracks in the ground.

Lava boiled everywhere.

Fragile terrain collapsed beneath the slightest weight.

The entire place was a maze of death.

Outsiders can never pass through it.

Karga had been born and raised here.

He had trained for decades in Volcano territory.

Before Burta took the position of Chief from him...

Karga had even trained specifically to conquer the Lava Maw.

He knew every safe zone.

Every important terrain feature.

He could navigate it with his eyes closed.

But Zakan?

An outsider.

And that pretty little Shaman who looked almost like a girl?

No matter how much the Ancestor Spirit supposedly favored him...

The moment they entered the cave...

They would choke on the poisonous gas.

And there are no witnesses inside.

It was the perfect place for an accident.

If they somehow survived...

Karga could stab them from behind.

Then throw them into boiling lava.

No one would know.

I’ll show everyone that Burta was wrong.

Better warriors than Karga?

How dare they?

Karga licked his lips.

He imagined killing them in an apparent accident.

Then...

Reclaiming the position of Chief that Burta had taken from him.

He looked toward his two warriors.

“Remember this clearly.”

His voice became cold.

“We must win.”

“Understood.”

They prepared their weapons.

A short while later.

At the entrance to the Lava Maw.

The volcanic cliffs radiated enough heat to sting exposed skin.

Karga and his two subordinates covered their mouths with wet cloth.

They looked at us confidently.

Karga smiled.

“I wish you luck.”

His eyes gleamed maliciously.

“If, of course, you are lucky enough to survive the eternal flames of the Volcano.”

Zakan answered in his usual dry voice.

“The same to you.”

He ignored Karga’s mockery.

I glared at that bastard until the very end.

Laugh while you still can.

Don’t start crying after getting beaten by a kid who hasn’t even completed his coming-of-age ceremony.

Burta looked deeply worried.

But since this had been declared a revelation from the Ancestor Spirit...

He couldn’t stop us.

He placed his hands on our shoulders.

“The contest between Volcano and Rock begins now.”

His expression hardened.

“Warriors... endure the flames of the Volcano.”

Then he added sincerely,

“May all of you return alive and safely.”

He lifted his hand.

“Begin!”

“WAAAAAAH!”

The gathered warriors roared.

Karga immediately rushed forward.

He confidently showed off his knowledge of his home ground and disappeared into the cave.

I turned toward our group.

“Let’s go too.”

Malko’s face had already gone pale from the heat.

“D-Do we really have to?”

I kicked his butt.

Then walked forward.

HISSSSS!

The instant we entered...

Sulfur gas struck us.

So did insane heat that felt hot enough to melt skin.

Reality was far more terrifying than playing a game.

But memories of the map I had cleared countless times began appearing in my head.

And then...

I thought of what waited inside.

The thing that would increase my survival rate.

And...

Make me extremely happy.

My pace quickened.
