Chapter 55

Chapter 55

“We look amazing!”

“So shiny! So incredible!”

“BARBARIAAAAN!”

What a ridiculous day.

Seriously.

I stood there with an exasperated expression, watching the kids gallop around like horses and make an incredible amount of noise.

“...Izak. What exactly are our kids wearing?”

Zakan had approached after hearing the commotion.

He stared at the children with a bewildered expression.

“Ask Mari.”

“...Mari. What did you make?”

I gestured toward Mari beside me.

She flinched and nervously fidgeted with her fingers.

“W-Well... I thought it would be all right. Ahaha... I-Is it too flashy?”

Yes.

Very.

Extremely.

Mari laughed awkwardly while watching our expressions, but when Zakan stared at her seriously, her voice quickly became quieter.

“I-I’m sorry... I didn’t realize it would be this flashy. But there are Ink Mushrooms everywhere in the northern forest. If I gather some and dye the fabric, it should be fine.”

Zakan nodded at her hurried explanation.

Right.

The material itself was incredibly light and durable.

If it was properly dyed, it could become the best workwear and combat clothing in the Rock Tribe.

“Good. Do that.”

Since the forest was dangerous, Zakan ordered her to take Malko and several teenagers from the combat group with her.

Mari sighed in relief and left.

I watched the children run around blinding everyone for another moment before clicking my tongue and heading toward my quiet fields.

This place is exhausting.

All right...

Time to take care of something I’ve been putting off.

I sat down in the middle of the quiet field and opened my status window.

I had accumulated quite a few unused Stat Points.

==========

This had gotten complicated.

As I continued leveling up, my traits and skills had steadily increased.

My Farming Journal was filling out nicely too.

I had more familiars now.

More titles as well.

Six remaining Stat Points...

I rubbed my chin while staring at my status window, which had become much more impressive compared to the beginning.

I knew better than anyone how difficult it was to increase a raw stat by even one point in the brutal game L.O.C.

A smile naturally crept onto my face.

So...

Where should I put these precious points?

I can increase Strength with the Muscle Potatoes that’ll start multiplying from tomorrow.

I glanced toward the five glowing Special Cultivation Slots.

Muscle Potato leaves were already poking out from the soil.

There was no need to waste precious Stat Points on Strength.

Intelligence and Mental Strength wouldn’t help much right now either.

Both were currently around 20.

For the time being, I would mostly be dealing with barbarians.

This was enough.

My current Mental Strength was sufficient to suppress the penalty from my unique trait, Barbarian Mind, and maintain rational thought.

Then the answer is Agility and Constitution.

The Northern Frontier was a place where anything could happen at any time.

Whether I needed to run or endure an attack...

I had to survive first if I wanted the other barbarians to survive too.

Without hesitation, I invested all six remaining points into survival-related stats.

[Agility has increased by 3.]

[Constitution has increased by 3.]

Now I had become a fine barbarian with:

Strength 25.

Agility 20.

Constitution 25.

Intelligence 21.

Mental Strength 20.

I stood and tried running.

My steps felt as light as feathers.

Strength surged through my body.

The feeling that my chances of survival had increased made me chuckle without realizing it.

Perfect.

I was about to walk away with a satisfied smile when...

SKRIIIIII! KIAAAAA!

“...!?”

A sound that should never have been heard echoed from the peaceful center of the village.

I instinctively drew the axe from my waist.

Then sprinted toward the sound.

BOOM...!

A massive shadow crashed into the village square where the children had been running around only moments earlier.

“KYAAAAAA!”

“M-MONSTER!”

As the dust cleared, the children saw the horrifying creature and scattered in all directions while screaming.

It was as large as two adult men combined.

Its body was covered in tough grayish-brown hide.

At the ends of its four legs were sharply curved, sickle-shaped claws capable of cutting into solid rock like tofu.

Sticky acidic saliva dripped from its gaping jaws.

Damn it...!

That’s a Hooked Sickleclaw Lizard!

Alarm bells screamed inside my head.

I had fought these things in the game.

And they were incredibly troublesome opponents.

Their toughness was already annoying enough.

But there was another reason they were so vicious.

These things...

You have to kill them twice!

Cutting off the head wasn’t enough.

The monster’s heart and brain operated separately.

Even after its brain was destroyed, a second nerve cluster inside its torso would continue controlling the body.

Just before death...

It entered one final frenzy and sprayed highly poisonous acid in every direction.

A spiteful monster that tried to take everyone nearby down with it.

At the moment, Zakan was probably the only person in this village capable of reliably killing one.

“GET BACK!”

As expected...

Zakan was the first to move.

He roared like thunder.

He drew the huge greatsword from his back and launched himself forward.

“KIAAAAAK!”

The Sickleclaw Lizard opened its jaws toward a nearby child.

At that exact moment...

CRAAACK!

CRUNCH!

Zakan’s greatsword smashed halfway through its thick neck.

Green bodily fluid erupted like a fountain.

It was a fatal wound that would have instantly killed an ordinary monster.

But just as I feared...

The lizard’s neck bent at an unnatural angle.

It did not die.

Instead...

Its body began convulsing and swelling.

Phase Two.

Its postmortem frenzy was beginning.

“Zakan! Get back! That thing isn’t dead yet...!”

SLASH!

Before I could finish shouting...

Zakan instinctively sensed the danger.

He reversed the motion of his greatsword and tore a cross-shaped wound across the creature’s chest, exactly where its heart was located.

“KIEEEEEK!”

CRASH!

Only then did the Hooked Sickleclaw Lizard collapse.

It died before it could even enter Phase Two.

Thanks to Zakan’s incredible combat instincts, the immediate danger had passed.

But the cold sweat running down my back didn’t stop.

There’s no way one of them would be alone...!

According to the original game’s setting...

Unless it was a boss-class mutant, Hooked Sickleclaw Lizards always moved in packs of at least five.

I urgently looked around.

But...

No additional attack came.

“Why is this one alone...?”

I muttered under my breath.

Then looked between the tightly closed main gate and the watchtower.

How had this thing bypassed our fortress-like wall and guards...

Only to suddenly fall into the middle of the village?

“Izak! Behind us!”

A child on the watchtower screamed with a pale face.

“The rear wall!”

Zakan and I turned toward the back of the village at the same time.

The rear wall...

The back half of the village was naturally protected by a tall cliff.

It was one of the safest areas around.

We had built and reinforced a sturdy wall along the remaining open half where the cliff ended.

Then...

From beyond that rear wall...

Horrifying monster cries began echoing.

SKRIEEEEK! KIAAAAK!

CRASH! CRACK!

Something was repeatedly smashing against the wall.

Judging from the noise and the cries...

There definitely weren’t only one or two.

Zakan tightened his grip on his greatsword, still dripping with green fluid.

“Malko! Evacuate the children into the residence!”

Then...

“Combat group, follow me immediately!”

Zakan sprinted toward the rear wall.

I clenched my teeth.

Then followed right behind him with my axe in hand.

From my shadow...

The young Divine Beast Arken raced beside me.

“Zakan! Remember this!”

I shouted while running.

“Those monsters keep moving even after their heads are cut off!”

Then...

“When they die once, they enter a frenzy and spray poison!”

Zakan listened carefully.

“You need to destroy the head and immediately pierce the heart!”

Zakan immediately shouted toward the teenagers following us.

“Move in pairs!”

Then...

“When one cuts off the head, the other destroys the heart!”

The children nodded bravely without any hesitation.

But...

Would they really be all right?

My kids barely had any real combat experience.

If they failed to stop those insane lizards from entering their postmortem frenzy...

We were finished.

Damn it...!

How did they break through a wall reinforced with steel plates?

We finally reached the rear wall.

Then...

Zakan stopped.

The children behind him stopped.

And so did I.

“What the...”

“...?!”

We froze at the unbelievable scene before us.

CRUNCH!

CRAAACK!

Bones shattered.

Flesh tore apart.

One section of the wall had already been completely destroyed by the monsters’ concentrated attacks.

A huge hole had opened through it.

Yet...

Not a single one of the lizards that should have been pouring through that opening had managed to take even one step into the village.

At the gap in the broken wall...

A small mountain of lizard corpses had already formed.

And standing on top of that mountain...

Blocking the opening with his enormous body...

Was a complete stranger.

“BARBARIAAAAN!”

A massive man.

A long scar crossed half his face.

His entire body had been torn apart by the lizards’ claws.

Blood dripped everywhere.

Yet...

He swung his axe like a madman.

Then stabbed his spear into their hearts.

He fought desperately.

If the entire wall had collapsed, the monsters would have surrounded him and killed him long ago.

But because there was only one opening...

The stranger had planted himself directly inside that narrow gap.

He refused to let anything through.

“...What exactly is happening here?”

I muttered in disbelief.

Beside me...

Zakan also stared at the strange man with widened eyes.

My mind began racing.

Is he one of the exiles Burta warned us about?

Did he intentionally break our wall and try to release monsters into the village, only to get trapped when his escape route was cut off?

It was suspicious.

Why would a complete stranger risk his life fighting a pack of monsters in front of someone else’s village?

“Protect the village first!”

Questions could wait.

The unfamiliar man blocking the gap staggered after taking a heavy blow from one of the lizards.

Zakan immediately gave the order.

“BARBARIAN!”

He raised his greatsword.

But just before he charged...

A small shadow shot forward faster than him.

“Awooooo!”

Arken.

The Divine Beast lunged at a Hooked Sickleclaw Lizard trying to enter through the gap.

He clamped his jaws around its neck.

Then violently shook his head.

A moment later...

He threw the monster directly toward Zakan.

“...?”

Zakan stared at the lizard that landed at his feet.

Its body had already started swelling as it prepared to enter Phase Two.

Zakan immediately stabbed his greatsword straight into its heart.

“Woof! Woof!”

Arken had already run farther ahead.

He wagged his tail furiously toward Zakan as if telling him to hurry up.

Zakan glanced at Arken.

Then leaped forward.

He landed beside him.

Damn...

Is this the beginning of the legend?

The greatest barbarian warrior...

And the legendary Divine Beast of the north.

The moment they instinctively began working together...

The chaotic battle quickly started turning in our favor.

A short while later.

Zakan’s greatsword destroyed the head and heart of the last Hooked Sickleclaw Lizard.

The fierce battle finally ended.

The unfamiliar man stood there gasping for breath.

He was barely supporting himself by using his axe as a cane.

Zakan pointed his greatsword toward him.

“Do not move.”

I also spoke coldly.

“Who are you?”

Then...

“Why were you fighting monsters here after destroying our wall?”

The scarred man’s pupils trembled.

The kids forced him onto his knees before Zakan.

Zakan grabbed his head roughly and pushed it down.

Then...

His gaze stopped at the back of the man’s neck.

“...An exile.”

There was a clear mark burned into his skin.

The brand of exile.

Zakan narrowed his eyes.

“Did you come here to raid us?”

Then...

“You’re a scout for a group of exiles.”

The man clenched his bloody lips.

“Listen to me.”

Then...

“I am an exile, but I swear I did not come here to raid your village!”

Zakan’s eyes remained cold.

“Why should I believe the words of an exile?”

He raised his greatsword.

“You know barbarian law.”

Then...

“An exile who returns dies.”

The man opened his mouth desperately.

But...

Before Zakan could bring the sword down...

“PUT THAT SWORD AWAY!”

A desperate shout came from the bushes beside the wall.

A woman staggered out.

Then threw herself between Zakan and the man.

She was covered in dirt.

Both hands carefully supported her enormous belly.

Pregnant...?

The female barbarian had a powerful frame almost as impressive as the man’s.

She was heavily pregnant.

But her eyes were fierce enough to look as though she might bite Zakan’s throat out at any moment.

She bared her teeth.

Then stood protectively in front of the blood-covered man.

“If you kill him...”

Her voice was sharp.

“Everyone in your village will die.”

...

What kind of strange threat is that?
