Chapter 29

Chapter 29

Kang Ha-min was normally a gentle person.

There was a reason people nicknamed him Shih Tzu.

He had often heard people say,

"I've never seen you angry."

Of course,

that didn't mean he never got hurt.

He simply kept most of that pain inside.

Either way,

Kang Ha-min rarely looked seriously angry at anyone.

This time was different.

Kang Ha-min was Baek Cheon-myeong's master.

That meant everything connected to Baek Cheon-myeong

was also Kang Ha-min's responsibility.

An adult was someone who took responsibility.

That was one of the things his parents had taught him.

Yoo Ah-rin had been kidnapped by Returnees who were targeting Baek Cheon-myeong.

In other words,

she had been dragged into Kang Ha-min's affairs.

"Tell me your name."

So Kang Ha-min's expression was colder than ever.

The woman who had pretended to be Yoo Ah-rin sat on the floor in front of him.

The contract preventing her from disobeying her master

instantly tightened around her existence.

"Hk!"

Her body shook as though she had been struck by lightning.

Her master's cold expression felt like the end of the world.

She had to speak.

She had to answer.

But fear made her lips freeze.

So she physically grabbed her own jaw

and forced her mouth open.

"Sh, Shin Ji-min! My name is Shin Ji-min!"

Shin Ji-min.

"Age."

"T, twenty-one."

Young.

How old had she been when she was caught in a Dimensional Break?

Ha-min felt sympathy,

but he couldn't stop now.

"Where did you take Yoo Ah-rin?"

"N, near the Incheon docks."

"Good. Guide us."

Now they knew where Yoo Ah-rin was.

There was no reason to waste more time.

Kang Ha-min looked toward Baek Cheon-myeong.

He was already prepared to leave.

"Tell Mr. Baek Cheon-myeong the rest on the way."

Naturally,

Kang Ha-min had no intention of going with them.

He was technically a Hunter,

but he had almost no real combat experience.

If he went,

he could easily become a hostage.

More importantly,

This is the Returnee group that even managed to injure Deus.

They couldn't underestimate them.

"Ah, yes."

Baek Cheon-myeong grabbed Shin Ji-min just as he had when he first brought her home.

She was already terrified of him,

but she couldn't disobey Kang Ha-min's command.

BOOM!

Baek Cheon-myeong launched himself toward the Incheon docks.

Kang Ha-min immediately shared his vision with Baek Cheon-myeong

and steadied his breathing.

"Mr. Baek Cheon-myeong."

His expression was more serious than ever.

"Bring her back safely."

The absolute command of Gravekeeper Kang Ha-min was given.

Baek Cheon-myeong's eyes flashed with terrifying sharpness.

[As you command.]

It was an order he would fulfill no matter what.

Inside an empty building,

a woman lay on the ground with a leather sack covering her head.

Her name was Yoo Ah-rin.

She had been kidnapped while traveling to work that morning.

An A Rank bodyguard was always with her.

But the kidnappers had defeated even that A Rank Hunter with ease

and successfully taken her.

Where am I?

She vaguely remembered the sound of the sea while drifting in and out of consciousness.

If she was near the sea,

Incheon was the most likely place.

It was the closest coastal area to Seoul.

Yoo Ah-rin recalled the faint memories from right before her kidnapping.

Every attacker had worn masks.

She hadn't seen their faces.

But her sharp eyes had noticed one thing.

One man had fur visible between his gloves.

It looked more like animal fur than human hair.

Someone with fur like that,

and enough strength to overpower an A Rank Hunter.

A Returnee.

Yoo Ah-rin quickly reached that conclusion.

The strength of Returnees had been discussed for years.

They possessed monster-like abilities

while also containing mana like Hunters.

Hunters became stronger through the Tower and rewards.

Returnees,

on the other hand,

were said to absorb the mana contained directly within Monster Stones.

They survived beyond Dimensional Breaks by absorbing Monster Stones.

And even after returning to Earth,

they could continue becoming stronger using them.

The fact that a Returnee had survived long enough to return to Earth

already proved their strength.

Their strange abilities often confused even experienced Hunters.

That's why governments capture and study Returnees.

Hunters could only be created through the Tower.

But Returnees could potentially be produced repeatedly

as long as they were able to absorb Monster Stones.

Naturally,

governments paid close attention to them.

Hunters were difficult to control because of human rights and many other reasons.

Their value had already risen too high.

In many cases,

governments were the ones begging Hunters for cooperation.

And once a Hunter achieved Tower Ascension,

they stopped caring about the surface entirely.

No matter how much a country invested in them,

the moment they achieved Tower Ascension,

they were gone.

Governments hated that.

Returnees were different.

They had practically no recognized human rights.

Their appearances were often far from human.

If governments could place a leash around them,

they could become controllable military assets.

And Returnees didn't achieve Tower Ascension.

To governments exhausted by dealing with Hunters,

they were extremely attractive resources.

That was why countries captured Returnees whenever they appeared.

Recently,

however,

news had begun spreading that Returnees were disappearing from facilities around the world.

They were escaping.

So it's them.

Normally,

Yoo Ah-rin didn't pay much attention to Returnee-related news.

It wasn't directly connected to Hunters.

But now things were different.

Returnees had formed their own force

and kidnapped her.

Then why had they taken Yoo Ah-rin?

Are they after money?

No.

If they wanted money,

there was no reason to target a troublesome Hunter.

It would be easier to kidnap someone with greater wealth and social status.

Then there was probably another goal.

If it wasn't money,

what was it?

My ability?

Her Appraisal ability.

Yoo Ah-rin was definitely the best Appraiser in South Korea.

But that reason had the same problem.

An Appraiser's role ultimately connected back to money.

Then the last possibility.

The value of Yoo Ah-rin as a person.

More specifically,

the connections tied to her.

She was famous throughout South Korea for having a massive network.

Who could be connected to her through that network?

There aren't many advantages to kidnapping me specifically.

Having many connections didn't mean many of those people would risk themselves to save her.

In the end, they're mostly business relationships.

Her wide network existed because of her value as an Appraiser.

She hadn't built many relationships deeper than that.

It was bitter,

but that was reality.

Then she returned to the question.

Why did they specifically need Yoo Ah-rin?

One connection that belongs only to me.

A person appeared in her mind.

Hunter Baek Cheon-myeong.

Yoo Ah-rin had investigated Baek Cheon-myeong in her own way.

But the more she investigated,

the more obvious it became that most information about him had been created by the government.

He had almost no real acquaintances from his past.

Then who had he met most often recently?

Yoo Ah-rin,

the Chief Administrator of the Hunter Marketplace.

But even so...

There was no way Baek Cheon-myeong would personally come to rescue her.

That meant the plan probably wasn't simply to use Yoo Ah-rin as a hostage.

However...

There were many skills in the world that could copy another person's appearance

or create illusions.

If the enemy were Returnees,

that was even more believable.

Yoo Ah-rin quickly reached a conclusion.

They're going to use me somehow to target Hunter Baek Cheon-myeong!

This was bad.

Baek Cheon-myeong had made her feel the value of being an Appraiser for the first time in years.

He could become the foundation that pushed her toward greater growth.

She couldn't allow him to be killed.

I need to escape.

More importantly,

Returnees who had already committed this kind of crime probably had nothing left to lose.

Governments already treated them as dead.

People who could disappear at any time had little reason to fear criminal consequences.

Once Yoo Ah-rin became useless,

they would probably kill her.

She steadied her breathing

and slowly raised her mana.

Yoo Ah-rin was an A Rank Appraiser.

Her combat ability was far below that of ordinary A Rank Hunters.

But she had earned enormous wealth through Appraisal.

And what had she bought with that money?

Self-defense equipment.

Crackle!

Sparks exploded from within her clothes.

They tore through the special restraints binding her body.

The Returnees had used special equipment,

but the extremely expensive defensive tool hidden beneath Yoo Ah-rin's clothes successfully cut through it.

The moment she confirmed she was free,

she ripped the leather sack from her head.

Her hair scattered.

An empty room appeared around her.

No one was nearby.

She began moving immediately.

Her physical ability might be weaker,

but her senses were still excellent.

Yoo Ah-rin pressed close to the wall

and sharpened her perception.

She would escape without being discovered

and join Baek Cheon-myeong.

That was the plan.

Then,

Stop.

Her body froze.

Something wet and sticky had wrapped around her from below.

Her shadow had grabbed her.

The instant she realized something was wrong,

she reached toward her chest.

BANG!

Her body flew into the air

and slammed into the floor.

The shadow had grabbed her ankle

and swung her like a weapon.

"Kgh!"

Terrible pain spread through her body.

She slowly opened her eyes.

Someone was crawling upward from the shadow.

A strange human with six arms.

Long black hair covered his face and dragged across the floor.

He looked far more like a monster than a person.

Definitely a Returnee.

He moved his creaking arms

and approached Yoo Ah-rin.

She had believed the room was empty.

She never imagined someone had been hiding inside her shadow.

Yoo Ah-rin realized her mistake

and gasped for breath.

The man's hand grabbed her throat

and lifted her into the air.

Her legs kicked desperately.

She struck his arm with her hands,

but her strength wasn't enough to break his grip.

Damn it. Was escaping too reckless?

The moment she revealed her intention to escape,

there would be no second chance.

Yoo Ah-rin understood that the situation was hopeless

and closed her eyes.

So this was the end.

She had lived so desperately.

And this was how it ended.

Even now,

not a single person came to mind who might rescue her.

She had never truly allowed anyone close to her.

She knew so many people.

Yet when facing death,

not one person appeared in her mind.

Loneliness.

For the first time in her life,

Yoo Ah-rin truly felt loneliness.

No.

That wasn't right.

It was simply an emotion she had buried long ago.

She had been lonely her entire life.

Only now did she finally recognize it.

Heh.

What an empty life.

Yoo Ah-rin closed her eyes.

Slash!

Then a terrifying sound cut through the air.

Thud.

When she realized what had happened,

she was already sitting on the floor.

She landed hard enough that tears briefly appeared in her eyes.

"AAAAAAAH!"

At the same time,

a man's scream pierced her ears.

Yoo Ah-rin raised her head in shock.

She saw someone's back.

That figure was familiar to her.

"Ah."

Baek Cheon-myeong.

He stood there holding a wooden sword,

his long hair flowing around him.

The person Yoo Ah-rin believed would never come to save her.

He had come.

The loneliness that told her no one would ever rescue her

was finally cracked by one sentence.

"You're safe."
