Chapter 17

Chapter 017: Suspicion (6)

Yoo Seok-in was considered an essential figure within the National Republican Party.

The party had repeatedly asked him to run for office himself.

However, he always answered that he had committed too many sins to become a politician.

He was an unusual man.

Everyone wanted him as an aide.

Yet he had personally chosen to work for Assemblywoman Kim Ga-eul.

Kim Ga-eul was only twenty-seven years old.

She had entered the National Assembly for the first time as a proportional representative.

Only two years had passed since then, but she had already achieved remarkable results as a member of the Public Administration and Security Committee.

Inside the party, people called Kim Ga-eul and Yoo Seok-in the perfect pair.

News of Assemblywoman Kim Ga-eul's summons was immediately passed to Hee-soo through Chief Jang.

Hee-soo had just finished a night shift.

The previous night, he had personally descended a cliff using ropes to rescue someone stranded halfway down a mountain.

Someone else could have gone.

However, Hee-soo had volunteered and descended himself.

Even someone with Hee-soo's exceptional stamina couldn't survive forever on three or four hours of sleep while constantly performing physically demanding rescues through the night.

Still, that particular night had been unusually peaceful.

Other than the stranded person, there hadn't been a single additional rescue victim.

Hee-soo later learned that nobody in Seoul had died that night.

When he heard that a summons had arrived from the National Assembly, he asked irritably,

"Why me?"

"They'll send the questions later."

"You've been requested as a witness for the Public Administration and Security Committee's national audit in two weeks."

Anger surged through Hee-soo.

However, the person responsible wasn't in front of him, so there was nowhere to direct it.

That only made him feel more helpless.

"I'm too exhausted right now."

"I think I need to rest."

"My head is killing me."

"All right."

"Are you going home?"

"No."

"I'm going to the apartment today."

"What for?"

"You haven't gone there in a long time."

"There are some things I need to pick up."

"And some things I need to check."

"Understood."

"I'll prepare the car."

"Please do."

After finishing the shift change, Hee-soo headed toward his apartment.

During the drive, he fell asleep as though he had fainted.

Chief Jang wanted to let him sleep longer.

However, he decided it would be better for Hee-soo to rest somewhere comfortable, even if only briefly.

"We're here."

Still half-asleep, Hee-soo got out of the car.

He walked toward the apartment in a daze.

The moment he opened the door and stepped inside, a chilling sensation ran through him.

His sleepiness vanished completely.

"Haah."

"I'm back here again."

It was impossible for him to feel comfortable in this place.

Every time he died, this was where he started again.

The bathroom was especially unpleasant.

Haah.

It's not like I'll die just because I go inside there.

So why is it so difficult to enter?

He didn't need to use the bathroom.

And there would be no real problem if he simply avoided going inside while staying here.

However, Hee-soo couldn't accept allowing himself to be controlled by nothing more than his brain's warning signals.

He approached the bathroom and opened the door.

"Meow."

The sudden sound of a cat startled him so badly that he shouted and stepped backward.

His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the floor.

"AAAAH!"

The cat casually shook out its legs and approached him.

It was a strange-looking calico Korean shorthair.

"What the hell is this?"

"Why is there a cat in my apartment?"

"Meooow."

"You always call me 'this,' don't yooooou."

"This?"

"Angel?"

"That's right."

"I'm the angel."

Hee-soo stared.

"You're telling me the cat in front of me is the angel, and it's talking?"

"Meooow. Correct."

"If I appeared in my normal angelic form, I would attract too much attention."

"That isn't what I want, meooow."

"Ah, damn it."

"Why does this cat sound keep coming out automatically?"

"What kind of software did they install in this body...?"

"Even an angel can't overcome a cat's instincts?"

"More importantly, your speech has become much more casual."

"Is that because I look like a cat?"

"What?"

"Angels care about honorific speech too? Sir?"

"Of course."

"I'm much older than you."

"Older?"

"So you were born at some point?"

"Are angels actually born?"

"No, wait."

"Is that how it works, sir?"

"It would be better if you didn't try to learn such private details."

"Anyway, take me with you."

"Huh?"

Hee-soo looked inside the bathroom.

Cat hair was scattered everywhere.

"I can't take you anywhere if you're going to shed this much."

"My family hates loose animal hair."

"We don't even raise dogs because of it."

"Understood."

"I'll stop shedding."

"So take me with you."

"But why do you even want to stay with me?"

"Because this is a newly implemented system, I've been ordered to remain beside you and observe yooooou."

The involuntary cat sounds clearly annoyed the angel.

Hee-soo wasn't particularly happy about taking him either.

"Couldn't you just monitor me through my phone?"

"Or you're an angel."

"Couldn't you become invisible and watch me?"

"Or use some kind of divine long-distance vision?"

"We considered that."

"However, by majority vote, the cat, no, direct observation from beside you was chosen."

"In the past, we often monitored people remotely."

"But it wasted too much energy."

"It also caused various problems and kept creating unnecessary bugs in this world."

"Eventually, He banned it."

"What?"

"Majority vote?"

"You vote over there too?"

"Of course."

"You humans only use majority voting because you remember our system."

"How else would humans have invented it, meooow?"

The angel, still in cat form, carefully brushed his whiskers with one paw.

Then he began licking that paw.

Hee-soo could only stare at the impossible sight.

After watching blankly for a while, he finally snapped out of it.

"Wait."

"Do I actually have a choice?"

"I mean, can I refuse to take you with me?"

"Good question."

"No."

"Then why did you ask me?"

"Because I don't know where your family house is."

"And this cat body has far more limitations than I expected."

"I couldn't even leave this bathroom."

"I nearly starved this body to death, meooooow."

"Then why did the majority vote choose such a useless cat body?"

"To minimize interference with the current world."

"And also to avoid using too much energy."

"Every time you die and restart from the past, it consumes an enormous amount of energy."

"Maintaining two people in this world who can do something like that is already extremely difficult."

Hee-soo's eyes narrowed.

"Oh."

"So resurrection uses a lot of energy."

"Is that why there's a limit on the number of times I can use it?"

"The council is still debating whether the regression function should even exist."

"One of the reasons I need to remain beside you is to prevent you from using it unnecessarily."

Hee-soo tilted his head.

"Then if I restart again, do I have to come back here around this time and pick you up again?"

"That's right."

"Why?"

"Are you planning to restart again?"

The angel's question instantly reminded Hee-soo of death.

A chill ran through his whole body.

"Haah."

"I'd rather not."

"Still, unavoidable deaths can happen."

"There is another function prepared for that."

"You can change your save point."

"What does that mean?"

"At the moment, your save point is fixed on the day you first died."

"However, if you change the save point, you can revive from a date you personally choose."

Hee-soo's eyes immediately lit up.

"What?"

"That function exists?"

"Then of course I'll use it!"

"It requires 356 days of your lifespan."

Hee-soo immediately let out a dry laugh.

"Hahaha."

"What a joke."

He only had six days of life remaining.

And those six days were the result of nearly a month and a half of exhausting rescue work.

One full year was an almost impossible amount.

"Even if I save two people every single day, it would still take nearly a year to collect that much!"

Forget a full year.

Even one month of extra lifespan would allow Hee-soo to accomplish countless things.

He had so little spare lifespan that he even volunteered to work on his days off.

Only after working himself nearly to death had he finally managed to collect six days.

It was the first time he had allowed himself a proper day off.

And now the angel was telling him he needed another 365 days of life.

The number made his head spin.

Instead of answering, the angel changed the subject.

"If you take me with you, sleeping for one hour will restore your body as though you slept for seven and a half hours, meooow."

Hee-soo's eyes immediately sharpened.

"What?"

"Is that true?"

"I am an angel, meooow."

"I do not lie."

"Do I need to spend lifespan to activate that too?"

"No."

"It activates automatically once you take me with you."

"Then of course I'm taking you!"

"You should've started with that!"

"You really won't shed hair, right?"

"Of course not."

"Good."

"Let's go."

"I knew you'd say that."

"Do you have any idea how much trouble I'm having because I don't have enough time to sleep?"

"If I can reduce that to one hour..."

"This is a true blessing from God."

"I told you already."

"God doesn't interfere."

"We handle all of this."

"Fine."

"A blessing from the angel."

"The council."

"Fine."

"Then when does this blessing from God, no, the council, begin working?"

"Now."

Hee-soo's eyes widened.

"Then let's test it immediately."

"I'm going to sleep for one hour."

"I'm so tired right now..."

He couldn't even finish the sentence.

He collapsed onto the sofa.

He didn't have enough strength to reach the bedroom.

The moment his body touched the sofa, he began lightly snoring.

The angel settled beside his head in a loaf position.

One week after bringing the angel home.

Chairman Choi, who had strongly opposed the cat at first, now liked him enough to gently scratch his head while doing paperwork.

"Hee-soo."

"Why doesn't Angel ever beg for Churu?"

Hee-soo answered politely.

"Father, Angel doesn't need things like that."

"He's a cat who doesn't like Churu."

However, the answer that came back was different.

"MEEEOOOOW!"

Chairman Choi burst out laughing.

"Hahahaha!"

"Look at that."

"He's asking for it."

"Hahaha."

"Here."

"I have some right here."

Chairman Choi had already prepared premium Churu.

The angel immediately began licking it enthusiastically.

At that moment, a door opened on the second floor.

A coughing sound followed.

Cough, cough.

The moment the angel heard it, he stopped eating and ran toward the elevator.

A worried voice came from the second floor.

"Chairman Wang, you'll be in serious trouble if you push yourself like this."

"It's fine."

Cough.

"Let's go downstairs."

"Yes, sir."

"Goodness."

"Why have you become even more stubborn?"

The elevator doors opened.

Inside stood former Chairman Choi Ji-yong, Hee-soo's grandfather and Chairman Choi's father.

The angel immediately began rubbing his head against Chairman Wang's leg.

Life suddenly returned to the old man's eyes.

His coughing stopped.

Then he laughed.

"Ho... hahaha."

"What a strange little creature."

Hee-soo scratched the back of his head.

Haah.

First 'this,' then 'subordinate,' and now 'strange creature'...

The angel's voice echoed directly inside Hee-soo's mind.

It's fine.

He's a man who will soon stand beside Him.

At that level, we tolerate language like this.

Thank you very much.

There's no need to thank me.

This is simply one of the blessings that naturally appears when someone lives together with an angel.
