Chapter 133

Chapter 133

“Is this a hospital or a restaurant? Why does everyone come here just to eat every single day?”

During the week I was hospitalized, people came by almost every day under the excuse of visiting me, only to eat before leaving.

Cha Seungjoon, Moon Hyunbin, and Moon Changsoo were especially bad.

They practically clocked in at my hospital room every day.

“Hey, your mother keeps bringing this much delicious gamjatang. How am I supposed to just leave without eating?”

Cha Seungjoon said while drinking straight from his bowl.

“Is it really okay for a production manager to keep disappearing from the set like this?”

“Yeah.”

He answered without hesitation.

“Director Song and PD Baek told me not to come to the set and just stay here with you.”

Moon Hyunbin, who was also drinking gamjatang straight from his bowl, chimed in.

“They say even dogs aren’t bothered while they’re eating. You nearly died, so why are you still so heartless? Does it bother you that much when we eat?”

Moon Changsoo grinned beside him.

“Exactly. I heard people who nearly die become endlessly generous afterward. I guess this hyung is an exception.”

“Ha... don’t you people have work?”

I grumbled.

“Hyunbin hyung, don’t you have any shoots these days?”

Mom, who had been watching us from the side, immediately spoke.

“Son, don’t say things like that.”

Then she proudly added,

“I joined Hyunbin’s fan club a few days ago.”

Moon Hyunbin immediately beamed.

“As expected of our mother!”

He clasped his hands dramatically.

“For your sake, I might have to hold a fan meeting soon.”

“Oh my, if you did that, it’d be an honor!”

I stared at the two of them.

“Wow. You two really get along perfectly.”

Moon Changsoo held out his bowl.

“Mother, can I have another bowl of gamjatang?”

Mom immediately stopped him.

“Stop eating so much. Hyejoo might come later, so leave some.”

At the mention of Hyejoo, Moon Hyunbin, Moon Changsoo, and Cha Seungjoon all frowned at once.

“Hyejoo is coming?”

Moon Hyunbin complained.

“She already visited once. Why does she keep coming?”

Cha Seungjoon nodded in agreement.

“Exactly. I feel uncomfortable whenever Han Hyejoo comes.”

Then he suddenly thought of something.

“Come to think of it, if Gil Boyoung knows you were injured, I’d think she’d come back to Korea at least once.”

Moon Changsoo looked worried.

“Seriously. Is Boyoung noona planning to settle down in Japan for good? She never seems to come back.”

I clicked my tongue at him.

“You’re supposed to be her agency manager, and you don’t even know where she is right now?”

Moon Changsoo blinked.

“Isn’t Boyoung noona in Japan?”

“Tsk, tsk.”

I shook my head.

“She’s in France right now. There’s a chance she might appear in a French director’s film.”

“And she said she wanted to come back to Korea, but I stopped her. I’m not seriously injured, so there’s no reason for her to fly all the way back.”

Moon Hyunbin looked offended.

“Tch. She doesn’t even reply to the emails I send her, but apparently she contacts you directly.”

He crossed his arms.

“Just wait, Gil Boyoung.”

Mom, who had been listening to the conversation, suddenly leaned in.

“Gil Boyoung?”

Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

“You mean that child actress, Gil Boyoung?”

“Is Boyoung close with our Kibaek too?”

Ah.

Danger.

When Han Hyejoo had visited a few days ago, Mom had immediately recognized her as the woman who had been involved in that scandal article with me.

After that, she had showered Han Hyejoo with all kinds of interest.

I absolutely could not allow Gil Boyoung to become her next target.

“Ah, Mom.”

I hurriedly tried to change the subject.

“Could you get me some water? W-Water...”

Knock, knock.

Someone knocked on the hospital room door.

“Ha... who is it this time?”

“At this rate, the doorway’s going to wear out.”

“Is there still anyone left who hasn’t visited?”

Moon Changsoo looked amused.

“I swear, it feels like a hundred people have come through here in the last few days.”

Cha Seungjoon frowned.

“Don’t tell me Han Hyejoo is coming again.”

While the three traded comments back and forth, the door opened.

A man carrying a fruit basket stepped inside.

“Huh?”

Cha Seungjoon immediately stood.

“Jung Hangyeol?”

Jung Hangyeol recognized him and quickly bowed.

“Ah, Manager Cha. You’re here too.”

“You’re probably still not feeling well yourself. How did you come all the way here?”

“No, I only had some minor abrasions.”

Jung Hangyeol looked apologetic.

“I wanted to visit sooner, but...”

I quickly sat up.

“Please, sit down first.”

Then I looked toward Moon Changsoo.

“Changsoo, bring that chair over.”

Moon Changsoo hurriedly brought a chair beside my bed and offered it to Jung Hangyeol.

Once he sat down, Jung Hangyeol looked over my body anxiously.

“I’m truly relieved you weren’t hurt more seriously.”

He lowered his head.

“I don’t know how I could ever repay this.”

He explained that he had wanted to visit sooner, but his wife had given birth on the day of the accident.

That was why he had only been able to come now.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I’m the one who’s grateful you’re safe.”

Jung Hangyeol’s expression tightened.

“No, I’m the one who should be thanking you.”

“If it weren’t for you, CEO Min, I really would’ve...”

He swallowed.

“I might not even have seen my child’s face.”

The thought alone seemed too horrible for him to continue.

Mom, who was listening beside us, pressed a hand to her chest.

“Oh my goodness...”

“That really was close.”

“Your wife must’ve been scared half to death.”

Then she asked,

“Is the baby okay?”

“Yes.”

Jung Hangyeol nodded.

“They were discharged from the maternity hospital yesterday, and my wife and baby are both at home now.”

“I really wanted to come earlier, but because of my wife and the baby...”

I repeatedly told him he didn’t need to apologize.

Then...

Jung Hangyeol hesitated for a moment before reaching into the inside pocket of his coat.

He pulled out an envelope and carefully held it toward me.

“Um...”

“In a situation like this, I know I should naturally cover your hospital bills and the cost of repairing your car.”

His eyes dropped.

“But honestly, my circumstances aren’t very good right now.”

“This isn’t much, but please use it toward the hospital bill for now.”

“And once my situation improves, I’ll definitely repay everything.”

Perhaps because he felt so guilty, he couldn’t even properly meet my eyes.

Startled, I immediately pushed the envelope back into his hand.

“No. You don’t need to do this.”

“I didn’t jump in there because I wanted compensation.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You were injured because you were trying to save me.”

“If I could, I’d give you anything.”

He looked embarrassed.

“But right now, as an unknown actor doing minor roles, I can barely support myself.”

Jung Hangyeol explained that he had recently started appearing in minor drama roles and was slowly gaining recognition.

But even that wasn’t enough to cover living expenses.

So he worked every part-time job he could get.

And now that his child had been born, the weight of being the head of a household had become even heavier.

“Actually, that day...”

“When I was offered the minor role, I hesitated because my wife was about to give birth.”

He smiled bitterly.

“But I accepted because I thought I could at least earn a little extra money for diapers.”

The burden of supporting a family was clear in his words.

Then...

Mom, who had been watching the two of us pass the envelope back and forth, suddenly snatched it out of our hands.

Before Jung Hangyeol could react, she practically shoved it back into the inside pocket of his coat.

“What are you doing?”

She frowned.

“My precious son got hurt this badly, and you think you can settle it with a few bills like this?”

“That won’t do.”

Jung Hangyeol froze.

Mom continued.

“You said you’re an actor, right?”

“Then become famous and make lots of money.”

“When that happens, pay him back ten times over.”

Then she looked him straight in the eye.

“And you know how much money it costs to raise a child, don’t you?”

“So you better become famous as fast as possible.”

Jung Hangyeol’s eyes trembled.

Moon Hyunbin, who had been watching, immediately gave Mom a thumbs-up.

“As expected of our mother.”

“Absolutely amazing.”

Jung Hangyeol lowered his head again, looking completely unsure how to respond.

I smiled at him.

“I’m a very filial son, so I can’t disobey my mother.”

“Take the money back.”

“And just like she said, you need to become famous as quickly as possible.”

“That way, you can pay back my hospital bill and the cost of my destroyed car.”

Then I added casually,

“So for now, start with the audition I’m going to introduce you to next month.”

Jung Hangyeol looked at me as if he had misheard.

“Did you just say... audition?”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“I said audition.”

Then I asked,

“Do you know the miniseries Father, In Your Name that ended last year?”

“Of course.”

His eyes lit up.

“I really enjoyed that drama.”

“I even got a copy of the script and practiced with it.”

Then he tilted his head, clearly wondering why I was suddenly asking.

“Perfect.”

“In a few months, Writer Do Kijeong, the writer of that drama, is starting his next project.”

I continued,

“I’ll contact you.”

“Come audition for it.”

Jung Hangyeol’s eyes shook again.

“R-Really?”

“Yes.”

“Writer Do is working on the script right now.”

“And there’s a role that I think would fit you perfectly.”

Jung Hangyeol hesitated as though the situation felt unreal.

Then his eyes became wet.

“Th-Thank you...”

“You saved my life, and now you’re even...”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“To be honest, I was impressed by your acting during the Kingdom of Crime audition too.”

“At the time, there were circumstances that meant we couldn’t cast you.”

“But I genuinely thought you had what it takes to become a good actor.”

Jung Hangyeol tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling, clearly trying not to cry.

Moon Hyunbin suddenly spoke.

“Actually, I was trying not to make it obvious because I’m an actor too, but I’ve seen you on TV before.”

Jung Hangyeol quickly looked at him.

“In the drama My Love That Feels Like a Fake, you appeared a few times as the chairman’s secretary, right?”

Jung Hangyeol nodded, visibly moved.

“Th-Thank you.”

“I was only on screen for a few seconds each time, so I thought almost nobody would recognize me.”

“Come on.”

Moon Hyunbin smiled.

“Ordinary viewers might not notice.”

“But we’re actors.”

“Even if someone only appears for one second, you can tell right away when they’re the real deal.”

“Th-Thank you, sunbae.”

Jung Hangyeol repeatedly bowed toward Moon Hyunbin.

“There’s no need to bow that much.”

Moon Hyunbin laughed.

“And if CEO Min says your acting was memorable, he really means it.”

“He practically discovered me too.”

At the statement that I had practically discovered Moon Hyunbin, Jung Hangyeol looked toward me again.

I turned to Moon Changsoo.

“Ah, Changsoo.”

“Talk it over with CEO Ma and consider scouting Hangyeol.”

Moon Changsoo smiled.

“I was actually planning to give him my business card before he left the moment you said his audition performance had impressed you.”

Jung Hangyeol looked back and forth between Moon Changsoo and me, clearly confused.

“Oh, by the way.”

I pointed toward Moon Changsoo.

“He’s a management director at Starlight, Hyunbin hyung’s agency.”

Jung Hangyeol blinked in shock.

“S-Starlight?”

“For actors... that’s practically a dream agency.”

He sat there looking as though he might actually be dreaming.

Mom watched me with a proud smile.

After finishing his visit, Jung Hangyeol thanked me again and again before leaving the hospital room.

I was left with a strangely emotional feeling.

I had changed someone’s fate.

The next day, after getting permission from the hospital, I was discharged one day earlier than originally scheduled.

And several days later, Director Song Jaehyun’s Kingdom of Crime finally completed all filming.

Over four months, the production had finished a total of eighty-eight shooting sessions.

But even after principal photography ended, there was no time to rest.

We immediately entered post-production.

The submission deadline for the Cannes Film Festival competition was in mid-March.

That meant we had only two months to finish the minimum editing and post-production required for the submission.
