Chapter 138

Chapter 138

“You were out here? We’ve been looking all over for you.”

Song Jaehyun approached me as he spoke.

“Ah, I was taking some calls. Interview requests, distributors... people keep calling from everywhere.”

“As expected of Cannes.”

Baek Seonghan smiled happily.

“Just making it into the Competition is enough to have them contacting us first. Hahaha.”

“Seriously. It’s already like this. If we actually win something, it’ll probably become complete chaos.”

“Come on, win something?”

Song Jaehyun waved his hands dismissively.

“I’m not even hoping for an award. Besides, have you seen the other films in the Competition? They’re all made by incredible directors.”

Baek Seonghan clicked his tongue at him.

“Come on. Being too humble can be ugly too.”

He looked toward me.

“We’re allowed to dream, aren’t we?”

“Of course.”

I nodded repeatedly.

Then Song Jaehyun quietly took my hand.

“Kibaek.”

His voice became sincere.

“Thank you. Really.”

“If it weren’t for you, I never would’ve even dreamed of making it into the Cannes Competition.”

The warmth of his hand seemed to convey more than words ever could.

“No, Director.”

“This is the result of you spending three years agonizing over the screenplay day and night, then working just as hard to make the film.”

I smiled at him.

“And Director, you know I have good instincts, right?”

Song Jaehyun chuckled.

There was a strange mixture of relief and expectation in his smile.

I continued.

“I’m sure we’ll get a good result, so save your thanks until then.”

At my hopeful words, Song Jaehyun’s eyes reddened for a moment before a bright smile spread across his face.

“All right.”

“Then I’ll trust your instincts one more time, Kibaek.”

There were many things in the way we looked at each other that didn’t need to be said aloud.

Time passed quickly after that.

YTBS’s May Monday-Tuesday miniseries Happy Laundry successfully aired its first episode.

A few days later, Director Song Jaehyun and the Kingdom of Crime team boarded a flight to attend the Cannes Film Festival.

Because there were only a limited number of seats available, Song Jaehyun, Han Taesung, and Kim Eunkyung traveled separately in first class.

The rest of us, Baek Seonghan, me, Cha Seungjoon, Woo Jungin, and Film Team Leader Ju Hanyoung, flew business class.

“Kibaek, when you call a waiter at a French restaurant, just quietly raise your hand or make eye contact until they notice you.”

Cha Seungjoon had spent a week backpacking through France after completing his military service.

Ever since we boarded the plane, he had been endlessly showing off everything he knew about the country.

“You can’t shout, ‘Excuse me, auntie!’ like you do back home. You’ll embarrass yourself.”

“And right, bathrooms.”

“In France, you even have to pay to use some public restrooms.”

“You didn’t know that, did you?”

“I know. I know.”

I sighed.

“So please stop already and get some sleep.”

“What are you going to do if you can’t adjust to the time difference?”

“I’m fine.”

Cha Seungjoon grinned.

“I’m naturally a night owl anyway. I’m practically already adjusted.”

With that, he returned his attention to the French travel guidebook in his hands.

I turned toward the window.

There was nothing outside except clouds.

Before my regression, Kingdom of Crime had received enormous praise from countless world-famous directors and critics.

But...

That didn’t necessarily guarantee that Kingdom of Crime would win anything at Cannes this time.

Even so, there was one possibility I was willing to put my hopes on.

Jean Dumont.

A world-renowned French film director.

Before my regression, Jean Dumont had praised Kingdom of Crime so highly that he once said the fact that it had failed to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes was nothing less than a trick of God.

Of course, Jean Dumont wasn’t a member of this year’s Cannes jury.

But there was hardly anyone in the film industry who didn’t know how much influence a single word from him could carry.

And there was something else.

The president of this year’s jury, legendary Hollywood director Steven Berg, regarded Jean Dumont as his mentor.

If Jean Dumont could mention Kingdom of Crime to Director Steven, even just a little...

If that happened...

Then maybe challenging for the Palme d’Or really wouldn’t be impossible.

But there was one problem.

There was no guarantee Jean Dumont would even watch Kingdom of Crime at this festival.

Jean Dumont was famous for visiting Cannes almost every year.

But that didn’t mean he watched every single film being screened.

Ha... what do I do?

I absolutely have to make Jean Dumont watch Kingdom of Crime.

There were two missions I absolutely had to accomplish during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

One was getting Director Jean Dumont to watch Kingdom of Crime.

And the other was...

Just as I continued thinking...

“Hey, hey, CEO Min.”

Cha Seungjoon suddenly nudged me excitedly.

“Meal service. The food’s coming.”

A flight attendant had appeared in the aisle, pushing a meal cart.

Ha...

Before my regression, Cha Seungjoon was always a dependable mentor-like hyung to me.

But now, Cha Seungjoon no longer felt like a dependable mentor.

If anything...

He almost felt like an adorable younger brother.

Then again, I really was young back then.

I looked at him and smiled quietly.

“Hyung, seeing you this happy makes me happy too.”

“Eat plenty.”

Cha Seungjoon stared at me as if wondering what kind of nonsense I was talking about.

After roughly twelve hours of flying, we arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France.

From there, we took another domestic flight for around an hour and a half before arriving at Nice Airport.

When we reached Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the local coordinator we had hired in advance for interpretation and event guidance was already waiting for us.

“You must be exhausted after such a long journey.”

He bowed politely.

“We’ve only spoken on the phone until now, so it’s nice to finally meet you in person.”

“I’m Kim Jihoon, your local coordinator.”

Kim Jihoon had been introduced to us by someone involved with a film that had been invited to the Cannes Competition a few years earlier.

He was currently an international student pursuing a doctorate in film at Paris 8 University.

“Yes. We’ll be relying on you.”

We climbed into the van Kim Jihoon had brought and headed toward Cannes.

After around forty minutes, we could see the sunset stretching across the coastal road.

Kim Jihoon spoke from the driver’s seat.

“From here on, this is Cannes.”

This is Cannes...

Until that moment, it still hadn’t fully sunk in that I had actually come here after being invited to the Cannes Film Festival.

But hearing that we had entered Cannes finally made everything feel real.

A strange emotion washed over me.

And apparently, I wasn’t the only one feeling it.

The van, which had been filled with conversation only moments earlier, suddenly fell silent.

Everyone simply looked out through the windows, lost in their own emotions.

Not long afterward, we arrived at the hotel Kim Jihoon had booked for us.

It was located in an area called Centre Ville, about a fifteen-minute walk from the Palais des Festivals, where the Cannes Film Festival was held.

Originally, we had planned for only Director Song Jaehyun and the actors to stay separately at the Majestic Hotel on Boulevard de la Croisette.

But Song Jaehyun had insisted on simply staying with the rest of us.

The Majestic was famous as a hotel where directors and actors invited to the Competition had traditionally stayed.

“All right, everyone unpack first.”

Kim Jihoon looked around at us.

“Rest for a while, then let’s meet in the lobby in forty minutes.”

“For dinner, something simple like pasta should be fine, right?”

“Ah...”

I cleared my throat.

“I kept eating Western food on the plane, so I’m already craving kimchi stew.”

Cha Seungjoon immediately clicked his tongue.

“You really are hopelessly old-fashioned.”

“You came all the way to France and you’re asking for kimchi stew?”

Everyone burst into laughter.

Kim Jihoon grinned.

“There aren’t any Korean restaurants nearby, but there is a similar Japanese place.”

“I’ll take you there sometime during the festival.”

We each headed into our rooms and unpacked.

Cha Seungjoon and I were sharing a room.

After nearly fifteen hours of travel, the moment I lay down on the bed, it felt like my entire body was melting into it.

“Kibaek.”

Cha Seungjoon stood by the window, looking out at the now-dark city.

“To be honest, I still can’t believe I’m actually here.”

“It feels like I’m having one long dream.”

“Me too.”

“Kibaek.”

His voice suddenly became serious.

“Now that I’m actually here... I’m getting greedy.”

I looked at him, wondering what he meant.

His eyes were unusually serious.

“The Palme d’Or.”

Then he continued,

“Or even the Jury Prize.”

“I just want us to win something.”

“We will.”

I answered without hesitation.

Then Cha Seungjoon suddenly grinned.

“And honestly...”

“I’m craving kimchi stew too.”

The restaurant district near our hotel was packed with people.

Every restaurant lined up along the street was bustling with customers.

They were probably people who had arrived early to enjoy the film festival beginning the next day.

Following our coordinator Kim Jihoon, we entered the restaurant he had reserved.

A waiter guided us to our table.

“Is someone else coming?”

Cha Seungjoon looked at the number of chairs, which exceeded the number of people currently with us.

“Ah, Senior Han and Actor Na said they’re coming over.”

Lead actors Han Seokgu and Na Sungjoon, along with actress Yoo Seolhee, had arrived in Cannes a day before us.

While we waited for our food after ordering, I quietly asked Kim Jihoon,

“By any chance, is a place called the Splendid Hotel far from where we’re staying?”

“The Splendid Hotel?”

Kim Jihoon thought for a moment.

“No. Maybe about ten minutes on foot?”

“That’s closer than I expected.”

I continued,

“If you have time, could you show me where it is tomorrow?”

“Sure.”

“It’s on the way to the theater anyway, so I can point it out as we pass.”

“Thank you.”

Baek Seonghan looked at me suspiciously.

“Why the Splendid Hotel?”

“Do you have business there?”

“Ah, no.”

I quickly brushed the question aside.

“I just heard it was a famous hotel. Ahem.”

The truth was, I had two goals I absolutely had to accomplish during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

One was meeting Director Jean Dumont and somehow getting him to watch Director Song Jaehyun’s Kingdom of Crime.

And the other...

Was meeting Reid Hayes, the founder and CEO of Networking Flex, the company that would eventually become the world leader in the OTT industry.

Before my regression, I had accidentally learned that Networking Flex CEO Reid Hayes had made an unofficial visit to the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.

The moment I heard that Kingdom of Crime had been invited to Cannes this time, that memory
