Chapter 13

Chapter 13 — Yulli Selection Exam (3)

After the three yulli candidates were selected, the Ibang visited Kim Jiseok's office to report the results.

"Many people applied, but only three produced answers worth considering."

Oh?

Instead of being disappointed that only three had succeeded, Kim Jiseok seemed pleasantly surprised.

"There is no reason to lament that few applicants found the correct answer. The fact that three people solved such a difficult problem is itself something worth celebrating for this county."

"You are correct."

"Then who are the three?"

"The first is a man named Hajeong from the lower village. He has spent many years preparing for a miscellaneous examination and applied in order to gain experience."

"Hajeong."

Magistrate Kim nodded.

"How was his answer?"

"He reached the correct conclusion that sikri should be paid. However, his reasoning was that a county magistrate judging such a petition should practice virtuous rule and take pity on a citizen in hardship."

"...I see."

The magistrate clicked his tongue.

From a Neo-Confucian perspective, Hajeong's answer might not necessarily be wrong.

But he had answered like a scholar.

His conclusion was correct.

His reasoning wasn't exactly incorrect.

Still, it was difficult to call it the proper legal answer.

"Then who is the second candidate?"

The Ibang concealed his nervousness.

"...The second is Kang Doyul."

"As expected. How was his answer?"

Kim Jiseok smiled immediately upon hearing Doyul's name.

The Ibang hesitated, then shut his eyes briefly before answering.

"...It was almost unbelievably perfect."

"Oh? That impressive?"

"His argument was extraordinarily precise. He went beyond judging the petition and even included additional recommendations."

"He included additional recommendations despite barely having enough time to answer the question itself?"

"...Yes."

The Ibang explained Doyul's answer in detail.

After hearing it, Kim Jiseok smiled in satisfaction.

"Haha! What a splendid answer. I chose that petition question because I myself felt uncomfortable with the obvious judgment regarding sikri. His answer feels as though someone scratched an itch I couldn't reach."

"..."

The Ibang lowered his head silently.

He wanted to diminish Doyul's answer in order to make his son Isu shine.

But Kim Jiseok was not a man who could be manipulated with shallow tricks.

Trying anything too obvious would be worse than doing nothing.

"So if Hajeong gave the answer of a scholar, Kang Doyul gave the answer of a jurist."

A yulsa was a legal specialist.

"Then who was the final correct candidate?"

The Ibang answered carefully.

"...The final candidate was my son, Isu."

"...I see."

The magistrate merely nodded.

The Ibang suddenly became anxious and hurriedly continued.

"...I-I shall report Isu's answer. Like the others, he reached the correct conclusion, and..."

"There is probably no need."

"...Excuse me?"

"He is your son, is he not? I am sure he found an excellent answer."

"That..."

The Ibang couldn't reply.

He lowered his head.

"My apologies."

"What is there to apologize for in raising an excellent son? As a father, it should make you proud."

Kim Jiseok fell into thought.

...Isu.

He knew how much the Ibang loved his son.

If Isu truly had greater ability and gave a better answer than Kang Doyul, Kim Jiseok would naturally choose Isu despite his personal preference.

But...

This has become awkward.

Of all things, Isu had passed the first stage while his own father supervised it.

There was nothing impossible about Isu succeeding through genuine ability.

Still, Kim Jiseok didn't want to suspect a loyal subordinate over something that might be innocent.

"Then post the list of successful candidates and prepare the oral examination."

"...Understood. Shall I prepare the oral examination as originally planned?"

At the question, Kim Jiseok hid his thoughts and answered calmly.

"Yes. Do so."

"...Understood."

After finishing work that day, the Ibang returned home and immediately pressured Isu, who was studying diligently.

"Isu! You must devote everything to preparing for the oral examination! The level of the other candidates is no joke."

But Isu remained full of confidence.

"Father! Stop worrying! Who am I? The talent the magistrate needs! A man destined to serve Yeongsan County as both a local clerk and a yulli! That's me!"

The Ibang became deeply worried about his son's flower-filled brain.

So he couldn't help adding something.

"...Criminal litigation will probably be important."

Isu froze.

"Father...?"

The Ibang turned away and continued with a stiff expression.

"The magistrate used the first examination to identify candidates with minimum qualifications. For this examination, he seems to want to judge whether someone can wisely resolve problems that occur in the county. And when it comes to serious incidents in the county... fistfights and murder would naturally be likely."

"...Father, what are you saying?"

Only then did Isu realize something was strange.

Come to think of it, shortly before the notice announcing the yulli position was posted, his father had suddenly recommended a useful book.

And the exact question from that book had appeared on the examination.

At first, Isu thought his studying had simply paid off.

But he wasn't foolish enough to miss what was happening now.

"The Yuchwibo contains many precious legal writings. Study it closely. This is merely advice from your father... so please don't think too deeply about it."

The Ibang wanted to reveal the exact question.

But knowing his son's personality, he couldn't commit such blatant wrongdoing.

Even this small hint made Isu stare at him with shock.

If he pushed further, his unruly son might cause an enormous scene.

I know your heart is righteous...

But just this once, please understand your father's intentions.

The Ibang hoped his son would accept what he was trying to do.

However...

"..."

After hearing his father, Isu's tightly clenched fists slowly loosened.

His thoughts grew complicated.

Dun!

"I have arrived!"

Several days later, after the first-round results were posted, Isu appeared proudly before Doyul.

"...What is it this time?"

"As expected, you're incredible! More than a hundred people took that difficult examination, yet you passed! H-Hahaha! The m-magistrate... truly recognized... the right... talent..."

Isu's face became increasingly awkward.

"...Thank you. Did you come to congratulate me? Congratulations to you as well."

"...Th-Thank you. And..."

"...?"

"Argh!"

Doyul looked confused.

After hesitating for a while, Isu suddenly blurted it out.

"S-Scholar! I came because I wanted to ask how you studied in order to solve the sikri question so well!"

"...Excuse me?"

After hearing his father's words, Isu had been troubled.

If I pass because of my father's influence... will I truly be proud of myself?

Isu wanted to be a son worthy of pride.

He wanted to win through his own ability, not someone else's help.

That was why, after much deliberation, he came to Doyul intending to share the information.

But...

Why is he asking this all of a sudden?

Naturally, Doyul was only confused.

...His passion for studying is impressive.

But what do I say? I can't exactly tell him I built my foundation with Professor Gwak Yunsik's textbooks and studied Kim Jungho's Civil Law Lectures and The Essence of Law School Civil Law...

After thinking for a moment, Doyul laughed and gave a vague answer.

"There wasn't any special method. I calmly examined the facts and wrote down the conclusion I reached. It seems the magistrate happened to view it favorably."

"...Ugh. So that's how it was."

Isu muttered seriously to himself.

Then he suddenly shoved a book toward Doyul.

"...What's this?"

"That! I can't explain exactly why!"

Isu shouted with his face flushed red.

He had decided to act honorably.

Yet somehow, doing it like this was strangely embarrassing.

"For some reason! I think that book might be important in the oral examination! And especially criminal litigation! And among that, things likely to happen in a county would probably include...!"

"...Isu? What are you talking about?"

Isu squeezed his eyes shut.

"P-Probably fistfights or murder!"

"..."

Doyul stared silently at Isu.

"O-Of course, I may be wrong! But for some reason, I thought it might help you!"

"I see."

...Now this is interesting.

Doyul already suspected that Isu had received help from his father.

But he hadn't expected Isu to come share the information.

The moment he finished, Isu awkwardly turned and hurried away.

"Why are you running off so quickly?"

"...I need to tell the others too!"

Doyul watched him flee.

His father tried to help him, but he rejected it.

Donggu spoke from beside him.

"He really has endless energy. Every time we see him, he's running somewhere."

"True."

"What's that book?"

"Ah. He just gave it to me."

Donggu looked at Doyul with a suspicious expression.

"...Shouldn't you be careful? He seemed so serious about becoming the yulli, and now he's suddenly giving you a book. Something feels strange."

"...Maybe."

Doyul slowly read the book Isu had handed him.

At this point, it's almost certain Lee Isu was a supporting character.

Which means the real question is...

At first, Doyul hadn't been sure.

But after everything that happened, he was now nearly convinced.

...What should I do about the yulli position?

If he became the yulli, he could naturally become close to the magistrate.

But what if taking the position that originally belonged to Isu caused the story to derail?

Doyul absentmindedly touched the book and sank into thought.

"Thank you all for coming."

On the day of the oral examination, Kim Jiseok welcomed the three candidates in his office with a gentle smile.

"I have reviewed all your answers. Every one of you is talented. Unfortunately... I cannot make important use of all three of you, so I ask for your understanding in advance."

"Of course!"

Isu answered energetically.

"As I informed you beforehand, this round was supposed to be an oral examination. However... seeing such promising young men has reminded me of my own youth."

The Ibang, standing silently nearby, looked at the magistrate in confusion.

"So I happened to remember a question I encountered during the palace examination when I was young."

"...!"

"Although this position is nowhere near as formal as the main state examination... there may be no better way to test your abilities."

At those words, the Ibang's eyes widened.

"This also fits our intention to judge purely by ability regardless of status. Furthermore, someone helping with the countless unexpected affairs of a county should not simply memorize a book and produce a fixed answer."

Kim Jiseok had decided to replace the planned oral-exam question and eliminate any room for controversy.

If they truly have ability, they will produce good answers.

The three candidates reacted differently.

First, the Ibang was obviously shocked by the magistrate's sudden decision.

H-He changed the question without saying anything...!

Second, Hajeong believed he had been deceived.

I thought something was strange the moment the local clerk's son passed! There really was a predetermined candidate! That bastard Lee Isu tricked me!

And lastly, there was Isu.

H-Huh...? He changed the question?

Isu was actually relieved that the question changed.

But now he had accidentally given false information to the other applicants.

The situation had become messy.

"..."

"..."

A brief silence filled the magistrate's office.

Doyul calmly watched the eyes moving back and forth.

...Hmm.

A question from the state examination.

"What do you all think?"

At Kim Jiseok's question, Doyul smiled.

"Your decision is indeed wise, Magistrate."

"Thank you for saying so."

Kim Jiseok smiled faintly at Doyul's relaxed response.

While tension filled the room, curiosity began rising inside Doyul.

...A main state examination question.

I wonder what it'll be.

This might actually be fun.

Doyul's passion for learning burned brighter than anyone else's.

At that moment, curiosity about the question overwhelmed every other concern.
