Chapter 53
Without realizing it, David Chen raised his spoon again.
A second spoonful.
Then a third.
'The more I eat, the more new flavors appear... This is pure astonishment.'
The flavor that had initially felt unfamiliar and shocking had already transformed into something incredibly addictive.
His tongue had completely fallen under its spell.
'I don't even know how to describe this.'
He closed his eyes for a moment.
The busy streets of New York and the familiar alleys of Seoul crossed through his mind.
This dish broke down the boundaries between East and West, tradition and modernity, familiarity and unfamiliarity.
It was truly a flavor without borders.
Master Kang Min-jung, who had been watching quietly beside him, also carefully lifted her spoon.
She had spent her entire life walking the single path of Korean cuisine.
To someone like her, adding cream and cheese to jeyuk, rather than even something like doenjang stew, was almost heretical.
With a strict expression, she brought the food to her mouth.
The moment she tasted it, a great wave passed across her stiff expression.
'Th, this flavor...?'
The warm comfort Hong Man-gi had described.
It felt as though that exact emotion had been carved into the dish.
The spicy gochujang seasoning was familiar and warm, like the cooking of a strict grandmother who secretly had a tender heart.
The smooth cream sauce wrapped around it like the embrace of a mother who forgave and accepted everything.
'This is proper... This is real.'
A distant childhood memory surfaced in her mind.
A young girl crying alone under the strict rules of a traditional family household.
Then her grandmother quietly approaching from the kitchen.
"Child, you're hungry, aren't you?"
A wrinkled hand holding out a warm bowl of rice.
The comfort and warmth that simple bowl of rice had given her.
Spicy Cream Jeyuk Rice Bowl.
To Kang Min-jung, this dish tasted exactly like that bowl of rice from her grandmother.
The combination was unfamiliar and unconventional.
Yet at its foundation was the affection and warmth unique to Korean food, the power to comfort someone's heart.
Just like a risotto where doenjang and cheese became one, this dish possessed the power to bring completely different things together.
"Hmm... this tastes like happiness."
Without realizing it, Master Kang Min-jung smiled faintly.
She quietly put down her spoon and looked deeply at Hong Man-gi.
Her gaze contained only warm curiosity and deep admiration toward the young cook.
"Hmm... for now, I don't even know what to say. But one thing is certain. This flavor matches the keyword 'memories' better than anything else we've tasted."
The studio fell into complete silence.
Every contestant and staff member stared blankly at the judges' reactions.
They had expected harsh criticism.
Instead, both legendary judges seemed almost completely focused on the food.
Their faces showed a depth of shock and emotion unlike anything they had displayed before.
Finally, David Chen spoke.
"Mr. Hong Man-gi, are you a chef, or are you a magician?"
"Among the tens of thousands of dishes I've tasted throughout my life, this is the first time I've encountered something so confusing yet so perfectly harmonious. Spiciness and softness, crispness and moisture, familiarity and unfamiliarity. Everything is dancing inside one bowl. How should I describe it, this flavor feels like an accident, an unexpected incident."
He began pouring out praise.
"You said this was the taste of new comfort and hope, correct? After tasting it, I understand. This dish offers comfort through familiar flavors, while showing people new possibilities and hope through unfamiliar ones. Your life and philosophy have been perfectly melted into this bowl. Truly, truly extraordinary."
The studio erupted into murmurs at David Chen's praise.
This was the first time in the history of the program that the man known as the Pope of Gastronomy had spoken with such emotion.
The moment David Chen's praise echoed through the studio, the other contestants' stations fell into complete chaos.
They looked at each other in disbelief and began whispering.
"Hey, Antonio. Did I hear that correctly? David Chen called it an accident? He didn't even use that kind of expression for my foie gras terrine."
"Good grief. That wasn't an ordinary jeyuk rice bowl. Maybe it really was magic. My grandmother's secret recipe losing to something like that snack-shop dish really hurts my pride."
Unlike the two bewildered chefs, Master Lee Seon-young watched Hong Man-gi with a satisfied expression and nodded.
"What did I tell you? Didn't I say from the beginning that there was something unusual about that young man's eyes? Food is created through the heart, not technique."
Whispers continued from every direction.
"Whoa, what's that guy's Instagram account? I need to follow him. Didn't they say he's a Hunter chef?"
"My goodness. So that really must taste good. Are they saying that cream sauce is better than the secret soy sauce passed down through my family? The world really is ending."
"No, seriously, how does that combination even work? How can richness and spiciness coexist like that? I need to test it at my restaurant. Of course, I probably won't do it as well as that guy."
"Ah, I'm screwed. Should I ask them to edit out my Rainbow Cotton Candy Affogato? If mine appears after that jeyuk rice bowl, it'll look like something made by a child...."
Meanwhile,
after finishing her tasting, Master Kang Min-jung quietly spoke.
"Mr. Hong Man-gi. I have spent my entire life protecting the traditions and principles of Korean cuisine. So when I first saw this dish, I honestly disliked it. I thought it was food without roots."
She paused and looked at Hong Man-gi with warm eyes.
"But after tasting it, I realized I was wrong. Because the roots of this dish are unquestionably Korean. I can taste the rustic yet affectionate flavors our grandmothers used to cook for us. You preserved those roots while boldly accepting new ingredients and techniques, creating an entirely new flavor. Perhaps this is the true meaning of 'learning the new by understanding the old.'"
She smiled gently.
"You mentioned Full Moon Restaurant. I think I finally understand what kind of place it is. A place that embraces wounded people and gives them new hope. Your cooking clearly has that power. Today, I tasted something truly wonderful. Thank you. Truly, thank you."
When the two masters finished their praise, thunderous applause erupted through the studio.
Lee Yu-han burst into tears.
Hong Man-gi quietly bowed amid the applause and praise.
A calm smile rested on his face.
A short while later,
when the applause finally died down, Producer Gu Sang-hoon returned to the center of the stage.
