Chapter 23

Chapter 23

The following afternoon...

After finishing the morning schedule, Theron carried the temporary access pass given to him by an Executioner and headed toward the main building.

Only a low wall separated the trainee dormitories from the main building.

But to trainees...

Everything beyond that wall belonged to another world.

A guard checked the pass and looked Theron up and down suspiciously.

"...Section Five?"

He frowned.

"You're the Special Trainee?"

"Yes."

"Strange world."

The guard stepped aside.

"Go in."

The hallways were cool and quiet.

As Theron walked...

He memorized everything he saw.

Every branching corridor.

Where guards stood.

The height of windows.

The terrain visible outside them.

Even without training... this place is worth entering.

Things he had ignored in his previous life were now pieces of a map.

Eventually...

He reached the stairs leading underground.

When he opened the iron door at the bottom...

A wide space appeared.

The underground training hall was completely different from the ordinary trainee grounds.

Black stone designed to absorb impact covered the floor.

Real weapons lined the walls.

Not wooden training swords.

Sharpened steel.

At the center stood Berton with his arms folded.

"You're here."

"Yes."

"Before training begins, I need to confirm something."

Berton gestured.

A man stepped away from the wall.

Gray robe.

Various tools hung from his waist instead of a sword.

Clearly not a warrior.

"Medical officer."

Berton explained.

"Special training places a different level of burden on the body."

"We need to check your condition before starting."

"...My condition?"

"Size of your mana hall."

"Development of your mana pathways."

Then Berton added casually...

"And whether the Sigil has properly taken root."

Theron's heart skipped one beat.

...Sigil.

The Death Sigil.

The restraint planted into all trainees when mana training began.

The tool that would eventually be used...

To kill them when their usefulness ended.

No trainee on this island knew the truth.

Even Theron had only discovered it at the moment of his death in the previous life.

But there was a problem.

Theron no longer possessed a Death Sigil.

The night he consumed the Blood Jade Fruit...

Its burning power destroyed the parasite within his heart.

And now...

On the very first day...

This problem appeared.

The medical officer approached and grabbed Theron's wrist.

Theron instinctively tensed.

The man spoke.

"Stay still."

"I'll only send mana through you to examine your body."

"It won't hurt."

Cold foreign mana began entering through his wrist.

It traveled against his pathways.

Toward his heart.

Think.

Theron's mind became cold.

If they discovered the Death Sigil had disappeared...

Everything would end.

Forget being a Special Trainee.

He would probably be dragged underground and dissected.

There was only one solution.

Imitate it.

Theron remembered exactly how the Sigil had felt inside his heart.

He had lived with it nearly his entire previous life.

And when the Blood Jade Fruit destroyed it...

He had felt its structure break apart in detail.

The Death Sigil consisted of two main elements.

The parasitic roots around the heart.

And the shackles tightening the mana pathways.

The medical officer could inspect for it using mana...

But not with perfect precision.

He was only searching for a foreign presence around the heart.

Therefore...

I'll replace it with something else.

Theron controlled the Dark Tempelst mana until it became incredibly thin.

Then he used it to draw a shape around the surface of his heart.

The same pattern as the Death Sigil's roots.

It required extraordinary control.

But Theron had already reached the limits of mana control in his previous life.

Hummm.

The mana settled around his heart and moved faintly like the Sigil.

"...?"

The medical officer felt something strange and looked at Theron.

Theron tilted his head innocently.

"...Nothing."

The man concentrated again.

Meanwhile...

Theron deliberately constricted several of his mana pathways.

He needed to hide the true quantity and purity of his mana.

However...

"..."

Purposely choking perfectly healthy pathways created a suffocating pain that felt almost like cutting into his own flesh.

Theron showed nothing.

He tightened them even more.

Then the medical officer's mana reached his heart.

"..."

A long, heavy silence.

The air in the training hall seemed frozen.

Theron felt the probing mana touching the surface of his heart.

He kept the imitation Sigil perfectly stable.

Even his breathing remained constant.

A single bead of sweat formed on his forehead.

That was fine.

For a young trainee receiving this inspection for the first time...

Some nervousness was natural.

The probing mana moved around his heart.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

...Please.

Cold sweat moved down Theron's back.

A fake remained a fake.

A sufficiently skilled person might notice the difference.

Then...

"...Everything is normal."

The medical officer removed his hand.

"Sigil properly settled."

He considered Theron again.

"Mana hall... slightly above average for his age."

"Mana pathways are developing well."

"I see."

Berton nodded.

It had never been an inspection ordered out of suspicion.

It was simply a routine process for every Special Trainee.

Yet to Theron...

Those few moments had been the most dangerous since returning to Hell Island.

...Passed.

Theron silently relaxed the pathways he had constricted.

The crushing pain disappeared.

His complexion returned to normal.

But...

If they ever inspect it another way...

That could become a serious danger.

Which meant...

I don't have unlimited time before escaping.

He had gained another reason to hurry.

Theron looked at Berton as though nothing had happened.

"Is it finished?"

"Yes."

Berton walked toward the center of the training hall.

"Now your training as a Special Trainee begins."

He took a real sword from the wall and threw it toward Theron.

Theron reflexively caught it.

Berton also drew a sword.

"Instructor... personally?"

"Consider it an honor."

Berton's eyes hardened.

"But it won't be easy."

Shing.

Cold steel emerged from the sheath.

"Attack me. I'll hold back enough not to kill you."

Theron drew his own sword.

His face reflected in the sharp blade.

"..."

"Don't hesitate."

Theron looked toward Berton.

He wanted nothing more than to drive the blade into the man's heart immediately.

But...

Not yet.

Theron released a quiet breath and took his stance.

Then...

Whoosh!

He kicked off the ground and charged directly forward.

The movement used the training facility's basic charge...

Combined with only the smallest hint of the variation he might have shown against Isaac.

CLANG!

Berton casually swept it aside.

"Hmm."

Theron's follow-up attacks arrived.

Slash.

Thrust.

Reverse cut.

Everything was built from the training facility's foundations...

Then covered with a thin layer of real battle experience.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Berton blocked everything without moving even half a step.

Naturally.

Theron was not even using twenty percent of his real ability.

The difficult part is choosing the correct level.

The Executioner had reported his fight with Isaac.

Therefore, Theron needed to display enough skill to match that report...

Without revealing anything truly dangerous.

Clang! Clang!

A sword dance balanced on a thin rope.

Ten exchanges.

Twenty.

At the thirtieth...

"Stop."

Berton lowered his sword.

Theron stepped back while breathing heavily.

Half of that breathlessness was real.

Half was acting.

"...How was it?"

"Your fundamentals are solid."

Berton studied him.

"And your battle sense is far too developed for your age."

Then...

"But..."

His eyes grew complicated.

"Something..."

Theron remained still.

Berton stared at him as though feeling something but unable to identify it.

Heavy silence lasted for a moment.

Then Berton shook his head.

"Nothing."

He sheathed his sword.

"Instead, I'll explain what needs improvement."

Theron straightened.

"I'm listening."

"Your reverse cut."

Berton drew again and slowly demonstrated.

"You change the direction using your wrist."

"That makes it fast."

"But..."

"You lose weight."

The blade traced a path through the air.

"Use the elbow."

"Not the wrist."

"You become half a beat slower..."

Berton finished the movement.

"But the strike carries far more weight."

The same reverse cut.

Yet the quality was completely different.

...As expected.

Theron's eyes faintly brightened.

He already knew the principle.

He had learned it with his own body across countless battles in his previous life.

But Berton had condensed that principle into only a few sentences.

Decades of battlefield experience...

Refined into instruction.

Berton had turned Theron and the others into tools.

But his ability to teach was real.

This was why Special Trainees had grown so quickly.

And why Berton had been trusted to continue training soldiers here.

Theron repeated the reverse cut three times.

Using the elbow instead of the wrist.

On the third...

The weight at the sword tip changed.

"...Fast learner."

Satisfaction flashed through Berton's eyes.

He liked Theron more than expected.

After a long period of training...

"That's enough today."

Berton pulled something from his clothes and tossed it.

Theron caught a black wooden plaque.

Main building access pass.

On the back...

A symbol for the library.

"You can freely use the library after the evening bell."

Berton added,

"But don't touch anything beyond the third shelf."

"The forbidden section."

"...Understood."

"Go."

Theron left the underground training hall with the plaque in hand.

Its weight felt strangely heavy.

That evening.

The Advanced Martial Arts Library.

Theron stopped inside the doorway.

Shelves filled the room all the way to the high ceiling.

Swordsmanship.

Spearmanship.

Mana control.

Cultivation methods.

The martial arts accumulated by Hell Island over decades slept beneath the lamps.

A place ordinary trainees did not even know existed.

In his previous life...

Theron had only entered here after becoming a Shadow Knight.

...By then, it was too late.

A few books meant little to a sword that had already hardened into its final shape.

But now...

Things were different.

He was twelve.

A vessel that could still become anything.

And now he could pour the knowledge of this entire library into it.

Far inside...

Beyond the third shelf...

A dark area blocked by iron bars could be seen.

The Forbidden Section.

The place Berton had ordered him not to touch.

...Even in my previous life, I never learned what was inside.

The door had remained closed even after he became a Shadow Knight.

Not now.

But someday...

He would look beyond those bars too.

Theron withdrew his gaze and slowly walked between the shelves.

His fingers moved across the book spines.

He compared the visible titles with lists from his memories.

Introduction to Lower Cultivation... useless.

Imperial Swordsmanship Manual... already engraved into my body.

His feet stopped at the middle of the second shelf.

An old leather cover.

The title was half-erased.

A thin book.

[A Wanderer's Notes on Walking]

A title so plain and careless that most people would ignore it.

Compared to everything else in the library...

It looked worthless.

But Theron's eyes deepened.

...So it was here.

In his previous life...

The true value of this unimpressive book only became known decades later.

Fragments of a lost ancient footwork technique hidden behind what looked like random travel notes.

A warrior who reconstructed those fragments later said near the end of his life...

[Half of my sword came from that thin book.]

Theron removed the book and sat at a table in the corner.

He pulled a lamp closer.

Opened the first page.

Dense writing.

Confusing.

Disorganized.

Half of it seemed like complete nonsense.

But Theron knew how to find the truth hidden within nonsense.

There's no need to hurry.

The nights of Hell Island...

Were becoming nourishment entirely for Theron.

The library's night was long.

And there was plenty to steal.
