Chapter 28

Chapter 28

Ten days remained before the test.

From the first dawn...

Every trainee in Section Five gathered at the training ground.

The wake-up bell was still far away.

Not one person complained.

After being told the bottom fifty were not needed on this island...

No one could sleep anyway.

Theron stood before them.

"For the next ten days, we have one goal."

He looked around.

"Find each other's weaknesses and fix them as much as possible."

Theron used a branch to draw lines across the ground.

He divided the training area into four sections.

Then assigned trainees to each.

"We'll divide into four groups."

"Every hour, switch opponents."

"After every match..."

Theron raised one finger.

"The winner must tell the loser one weakness they noticed during the fight."

"A weakness...?"

Someone looked confused.

Theron nodded.

"Our enemies inside the test are not one another."

"They're the other three hundred and fifty."

He continued.

"So if one of your comrades finds a weakness now..."

"You're lucky enough to discover it before an enemy finds it during the test."

Instead of hiding weaknesses...

Expose them.

Correct them together.

A training method completely opposite to Hell Island's common sense.

At first...

The trainees murmured.

Then one by one, they nodded.

They had already experienced how far Theron's methods could take Section Five.

"Begin."

At Theron's command...

Wooden swords began clashing across the training ground.

The special training was brutal.

CLANG! BOOM!

"Perka."

Theron watched one match.

"You have a bad habit with your shield."

Perka breathed heavily and turned.

"A habit?"

"You pause half a beat after blocking."

"When you're with a group, it's manageable."

"But when you fight alone..."

Theron pointed.

"Your side opens during that half-beat."

"...So what should I do?"

"Counterattack the instant you block."

Theron demonstrated.

"Use the force you're redirecting with the shield and transfer it directly into the sword."

Perka repeated it several times.

Then his eyes widened.

Blocking and cutting...

No longer felt like two movements.

They became one.

Renil received the opposite prescription.

"Renil, you're fast."

"But your breathing is shallow."

"Breathing?"

"You spend everything in the first ten exchanges."

"The test lasts all day."

"At your current pace, you'll be exhausted before noon."

"...Then?"

"Attack three times."

"Retreat once."

Theron continued.

"Use that one retreat to refill your breath."

"You'll hate slowing down..."

"But it's how you keep your speed for the entire day."

For silent Tioren...

One short explanation was enough.

"Tioren."

"Forget about using a bow inside the test."

"When people get close, you're helpless."

Theron handed him a short wooden weapon.

"So learn to draw a weapon and attack the instant an enemy enters your range."

"With your speed, you can do it."

"...Understood."

One person after another.

Theron's eyes identified the nature of every one of the forty-two trainees.

His advice was always precise.

At first...

Many doubted him.

But as their own bodies changed day by day...

Everyone started hanging on every word Theron spoke.

Soon...

After every sparring session...

Trainees crowded around Theron, waiting for their own advice.

Everything engraved into Theron's body through countless life-and-death battles...

Was slowly becoming part of his comrades.

The first additional change came on the morning of the second day.

Just as everyone prepared to divide into groups...

Noise came from the entrance.

Palcoat.

Behind him...

Valk and six or seven others carried wooden swords.

"...What?"

Renil frowned.

"Why are they here?"

An awkward silence fell.

Until now...

Palcoat's group had never joined the special training.

Naturally...

Everyone remained cautious.

Palcoat walked through the stares.

Stopped in front of Theron.

Stood silently for a long moment.

Then finally forced the words out.

"...Do you have room?"

A short question.

But the bandages around his hand showed how many nights it had probably taken to ask it.

Theron looked at him.

Then casually tilted his head toward one group.

"Second group has space."

"Warm up and join."

"..."

That was all.

No welcome.

No mention of the past.

Palcoat stood blankly for a moment.

Then led his group toward the second training area.

"What? That's it?"

Perka looked at Theron in disbelief.

Theron shrugged.

"He came."

"That's enough."

No words were needed.

The moment someone stood on the same training ground holding the same weapon...

He was already a Section Five comrade.

That afternoon...

Palcoat showed exactly why he belonged.

BOOM!

His natural strength combined with the "last handspan" technique.

His downward strike became one of the strongest in Section Five.

Three trainees in his group dropped their weapons one after another.

"Strong..."

"Was he always this strong?"

"He was always strong."

"But now..."

"This is completely different."

Palcoat silently pointed his wooden sword toward the next opponent.

Yet Valk noticed the tiniest proud lift of his shoulders.

"Brother! Your shoulder! Too much power again!"

"...I know, idiot!"

Every time Palcoat shouted back at Valk's constant advice...

The other trainees laughed.

Someone who once ruled Section Five through fear...

Had become just another noisy part of the training ground.

But beyond the walls...

Things were very different.

"I heard two people from Section Three were taken to the infirmary yesterday."

"They fought within the same group and one guy lost control..."

"Section Seven already eats separately."

"They don't even trust each other enough to sit with spoons nearby."

Rumors heard in the meal line were brutal.

With the blade of the bottom fifty against their throats...

The other sections were already tearing into themselves before the test began.

The word "comrade" disappeared.

Everyone became nervous and sensitive.

Perka listened while holding his tray.

"...We'd probably be like them without you."

"Who knows."

Theron answered briefly.

But he knew.

That was how Hell Island normally worked.

And exactly the situation Berton wanted.

The other sections will destroy themselves before the test begins.

If only Section Five entered with its unity intact...

That alone meant half the battle was already won.

"Reporting."

An Executioner stood before Berton.

"Since the test announcement, there have been twenty-three conflicts between trainees."

"Eight people sent to the infirmary."

"Section Three has serious injuries as well."

Berton nodded.

Exactly as expected.

The moment the blade of the bottom fifty was placed against their throats...

Trainees always collapsed this way.

"Section Five?"

"...That is..."

The Executioner carefully chose his words.

"No conflicts."

"Not one."

Berton's eyebrow moved.

"None?"

"They're actually training together."

The Executioner continued.

"The winner of each spar tells the loser a weakness they noticed."

"A... strange method."

For the first time...

Berton's expression shifted.

They were not breaking from fear.

They were not simply huddling together in panic.

They were using the blade itself as a whetstone to sharpen one another.

"...Interesting."

Berton walked to the window.

Dust rose from the distant Section Five training ground.

"But a training ground and a test field are different."

His eyes narrowed.

"When their own ranking is at stake..."

"When their own lives are at stake..."

Berton smiled faintly.

"Let's see whether they can still hold hands."

That was the true question.

The answer would come ten days later.

Two nights before the test...

Theron sat alone inside the Advanced Cultivation Room.

Hummm.

Each time mana circulated beneath the bracelet's resonance...

He felt something unfamiliar around the edge of his mana hall.

A firm wall.

But one that returned an echo whenever touched.

A wall that had become thin.

The Four-Star wall...

The gateway to Aura manifestation was already directly ahead.

If Theron forced himself...

He might be able to break through right now.

But Theron calmly settled the rising mana.

There's no reason to rush.

A wall was best broken after becoming thin enough to collapse naturally.

More importantly...

Trying to advance immediately before the test was too risky.

If his mana pathways suffered even a small backlash...

He might not be able to participate at all.

After finishing cultivation...

Theron left the room and looked through a hallway window.

Moonlight covered Section Five's training ground.

The sounds of wooden swords could still faintly be heard.

Everyone squeezing out the final day while sacrificing sleep.

A faint smile appeared on Theron's lips.

...We've come far.

When he remembered the day he first returned to this island...

The change felt almost impossible.

People who had once done nothing but glare at each other...

Now spent the night filling each other's weaknesses.

Finally...

The tenth night arrived.

The night before the test.

Section Five's dormitory was strangely quiet.

Not because everyone slept early.

Everyone lay awake staring at the ceiling.

Perka eventually broke the silence.

"...Hey. Anyone asleep?"

"How the hell could we sleep?"

Renil answered.

Several quiet laughs appeared in the darkness.

Perka sat up.

"Tomorrow..."

He hesitated.

"What happens if we meet each other inside?"

The dormitory became quiet again.

It was the question everyone had swallowed for ten days.

Theron spoke from the darkness.

"Fight."

Everyone listened.

"If you obviously avoid one another, the instructors might punish us."

"..."

"But..."

Theron continued.

"You don't need to fight like you're trying to kill each other."

"We know every weakness the others have."

"That means we can fight each other safely."

"That's the real reason we spent ten days training this way."

Knowing someone's weakness meant knowing their vital openings.

And knowing those openings also meant knowing where not to strike.

"Fight seriously."

"But break nothing."

"Whoever wins goes higher for both of you."

"That's enough."

Theron's quiet voice reached everyone.

"Tomorrow night..."

"Every one of us meets again in this dormitory."

"That's Section Five's goal."

"...Everyone survives."

Perka repeated softly.

Renil laughed from beside him.

"Sounds insane..."

Then he smiled.

"But somehow I think we'll do it."

Faint smiles appeared across the dark room.

The heavy atmosphere loosened.

One by one...

Everyone finally closed their eyes.

Soon...

Even breathing filled the darkness.

Only Theron remained awake.

Everyone survives.

He knew better than anyone how difficult that goal was.

Three hundred and fifty enemies.

A battle lasting all day.

Berton watching from above.

Countless variables.

But precisely because of that...

They needed to succeed.

No one dies on a board I'm controlling.

That would be the clearest answer possible...

To Hell Island's design.

And to the man who designed this test.

Theron quietly closed his eyes.

The next dawn...

Dong. Dong. Dong.

The bell beginning the test split Hell Island's sky.
