Chapter 34

Chapter 34

Past midnight.

Advanced Cultivation Room.

Beneath the lamp shining through the cracks of the door...

Theron sat cross-legged without moving.

Cultivating until dawn.

A routine repeated every night since his private meeting with Berton.

To anyone watching from outside...

Tonight looked exactly like every other night.

One at the entrance.

Theron's eyes remained closed.

One on the opposite roof.

Two watchers again.

The Advanced Cultivation Room was located on the third floor of the main building.

It had only one window.

That window faced the cliff behind the building...

Outside both observers' direct sight.

They believed guarding the entrance was enough.

Naturally...

A third-floor window overlooking a steep slope did not look like an escape route.

However...

Slide.

Theron silently opened the window.

Cold night wind shook the lamp.

But the flame remained lit.

It had to.

That light itself was proof that...

"Theron is cultivating."

I need to hurry.

If he remained away too long...

An unexpected variable could appear.

Theron climbed through the window and melted into the darkness.

He placed his body on his exhaled breath.

Then slid between the rocks like wind.

Wandering Wind.

He tightened his mana pathways to erase his presence.

Using only the minimum mana necessary...

He powered the footwork and descended the cliff.

Once below...

Theron immediately moved away and resumed searching.

It was already the fourth night.

What he sought...

Was Red Flame Herb.

The palm-sized red plant had blood-colored veins running through its leaves.

Among trainees...

It was known by another name.

The plant that burns your insides until you die.

Every generation...

At least one ignorant trainee chewed it and spent the entire day rolling around as though they had swallowed fire.

So children on Hell Island avoided red leaves on sight.

But Theron knew the truth.

The heat inside Red Flame Herb...

Was the only flame capable of burning away the Death Sigil.

Consume it.

Use mana to trap its heat.

Then move that heat toward the Death Sigil around the heart.

Two-Star was the minimum realm needed to control the process.

Anyone below Two-Star could not properly control the herb's heat.

They would only suffer.

The Sigil would remain.

The real problem...

Was quantity.

A few plants could be found around the island.

But Theron needed enough for nearly four hundred people.

Did that much even exist here?

That was why he had spent night after night searching while avoiding surveillance.

Northern forest. Failure.

Eastern coast. Failure.

The northern forest had only scattered plants.

Despite the large test area...

The shaded, cool soil was apparently poor for Red Flame Herb.

The eastern rocky coast was worse.

There was barely any soil at all.

On the third night...

Theron found several decent clusters in the western hills.

Enough for perhaps a few dozen trainees.

Nowhere close to four hundred.

Warm ground.

Still...

Each failed night narrowed the answer.

Every cluster had something in common.

A slope exposed to sunlight for long hours.

Soil warmer than its surroundings.

A plant carrying heat...

Grew in land that carried heat.

Then where was the hottest land on the island?

Only one place remained.

The southwest.

A region trainees never visited.

At the same time.

Top floor of the main building.

"What is Theron doing?"

Berton suddenly asked while reviewing documents.

The Executioner standing near the door answered immediately.

"Practicing his Mana Method in the Advanced Cultivation Room."

"...Persistent little bastard."

Berton muttered.

Theron completed ordinary training.

Then trained directly with Berton.

At night he read inside the library.

And even after all that...

He cultivated mana until dawn.

Calling it simple willpower was no longer enough.

And this had continued for weeks.

Not one missed day.

Berton smiled slightly.

"He seems very concerned about the Inspection Delegation."

Theron was too clever not to notice the blade hiding beneath the word "reward."

That was probably why he was driving himself so brutally.

The picture itself...

Was exactly what Berton had intended.

However...

"Still."

Berton stood.

"If he destroys his body from overtraining before then, that would be troublesome."

He walked toward the door.

"Let's go to the Advanced Cultivation Room."

"Tomorrow, I'll order him to rest completely."

"I'll accompany you."

The Executioner quietly followed.

Officially...

Berton was checking the trainee's condition.

But the Executioner knew this surprise visit in the middle of the night had another purpose.

Theron's routine had been painfully honest for weeks.

Berton wanted to inspect the inside of that honesty with his own eyes.

Soon...

They reached the third floor.

Berton raised his hand toward the cultivation-room door.

At that exact moment...

Click.

The door opened from the inside.

"...Is something wrong?"

Theron stepped out and looked up at Berton.

His clothes were soaked with sweat.

His breathing remained rough.

Exactly the appearance of someone who had spent the entire night cultivating.

Berton stared at him for a moment.

"Too much training becomes poison."

He spoke calmly.

"Take tomorrow off."

"Rest properly."

"...But..."

"The Inspection Delegation is still some time away."

"Rest appropriately while preparing."

Berton's voice hardened.

"That's an order."

"...Understood."

Theron lowered his head.

Even after hearing the answer...

Berton did not immediately leave.

His gaze slid past Theron into the cultivation room.

A lamp that had burned all night.

A cushion depressed by someone sitting cross-legged.

Sweat on the floor.

Nothing unusual.

A perfectly ordinary dawn inside a cultivation room.

"...Rest."

Berton turned.

Theron remained beside the door until the footsteps of Berton and the Executioner disappeared completely down the hallway.

The moment the sound vanished...

Theron stepped inside.

Closed the door.

Then...

Thud.

He sat heavily on the floor and released the breath he had been holding.

"Haaaah..."

A little later...

And it would have been dangerous.

...That was close.

Theron had returned through the window less than a hundred breaths before he heard the two presences approaching from the hallway.

The sweat covering him...

Came from running all night to the far southwest.

The rough breathing...

Was real too.

Ironically...

That had saved him.

Someone exhausted from cultivation and someone exhausted from running all night looked almost identical from the outside.

If Berton had opened the door first...

If Theron had been caught beside the window before he could even change his clothes...

Weeks of perfect honesty would have shattered instantly.

...I need to increase the interval.

Theron's gaze cooled.

He's started moving.

Still...

Despite the cold sweat on his back...

He had gained something important.

A full day tomorrow.

No training.

No reason for anyone to question what he did during his "rest."

Granted directly by Berton himself.

And more importantly...

"...I found it."

A smile slowly appeared on Theron's face as he fell backward onto the floor.

"A massive field of Red Flame Herb."
