Chapter 5

Chapter 5

The punishment room was one of the cruelest punishments in the training facility.

A special magic circle blocked every sense except touch.

No sight.

No sound.

No smell.

Nothing.

Only endless darkness remained.

It might not sound terrible at first.

But someone with a weak mind could completely lose their sanity after only a few days.

That was why punishment-room sentences usually lasted at least one day and at most four or five days.

Only the minimum amount of food and water were provided.

If I can get inside there...

What Theron needed right now was simple.

A place where he could be completely alone.

And time.

Considering the training that's coming...

Not long after learning the Mana Method, the real training would begin.

These current exercises were nothing more than children's games.

When that time came...

I need to fix this useless Mana Method... and reach One-Star.

But there was not enough time.

Theron calmly organized his thoughts while watching the argument grow more violent.

There was no reason to waste energy on something this pointless.

Especially when they needed to survive what was coming.

And to prevent things like this from constantly happening...

I also need to establish my position here.

This place followed the law of the strong.

If he wanted people to stop creating trouble for him, he needed to make an example once.

His decision was made.

"Palcoat!"

Theron shouted and rushed forward.

Unfortunately, the current difference between Theron's body and Palcoat's was larger than it looked.

Theron probably would not lose even in a direct fight.

But...

Right now, I need to leave a strong impression.

Just once.

Whoosh!

The instant Palcoat turned around, Theron kicked off the ground and jumped.

BAM!

His knee struck Palcoat directly under the chin.

The attack landed perfectly.

Palcoat's eyes rolled back.

He collapsed immediately.

THUD!

They were around the same age.

But Palcoat was more than a full head taller than Theron.

His body was much bigger as well.

Yet Theron had knocked him unconscious with a single strike.

The training ground fell silent.

"...Theron?"

Perka blinked in shock.

Theron looked around at the trainees with cold eyes.

"Anyone else have a problem?"

It was a side of Theron none of them had ever seen.

For the first time, no one looking at him thought of the words "Idiot Theron."

"...Theron?"

Berton looked at the instructor standing before him as though he had never heard the name before.

Bengle, the instructor in charge of Section Five, bowed slightly and nodded.

"Y-Yes. He's one of the trainees in my section... The one everyone calls Idiot Theron."

"You're saying Idiot Theron completely destroyed six trainees from Section Five?"

Berton's cold gaze fell on Bengle.

Bengle flinched.

The incident had happened suddenly.

But because it had happened inside Section Five, Bengle was responsible.

And Berton had absolutely no mercy.

"I-It was completely unexpected. Until only a few days ago, he couldn't even raise his voice. I never thought he'd suddenly cause something like this..."

"A hidden blade is often sharper than the one everyone can see."

Berton closed the book he had been reading and placed it on his desk.

Then he looked at Bengle.

"Explain in more detail."

"Y-Yes... Three suffered broken limbs. Two were only knocked unconscious. But... there's a trainee named Palcoat. He's one of the physically stronger trainees in Section Five."

"Palcoat? You mean that bear-like brat."

Berton knew most of the more noticeable trainees from every section.

Bengle quickly nodded.

"Y-Yes. He's big, so his stamina isn't particularly good, but his physical strength is impressive. He's one of the trainees worth watching."

"And?"

"Theron... knocked Palcoat unconscious with a single attack."

"Unconscious?"

How could that possibly happen?

Palcoat weighed nearly twice as much as Theron.

And these children had barely begun learning the Mana Method.

"Are you sure the story isn't exaggerated?"

"Almost every trainee saw it. Their testimonies all match."

"...I see."

There were occasionally people like that.

People who suddenly awakened after some unknown event.

Berton narrowed his eyes.

He lightly tapped the desk with his index finger.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

After thinking for a while, Berton spoke.

"You said his name was Theron?"

"Yes."

"Lock him in the punishment room for one week. Afterward, keep a close watch on him."

"O-One week?!"

Bengle stared at him in shock.

The punishment room could destroy a person's mind.

Normally, even the longest sentences were only three or four days.

"Isn't one week too severe?"

"Didn't you say he was an idiot? This is a good opportunity to make an example out of him."

But Berton's real thoughts were different.

If...

If spending a week inside the punishment room became another trigger for Theron...

He'll either completely change... or lose his mind.

Either result was acceptable to Berton.

With an uninterested expression, Berton reopened his book.

Bengle looked uncomfortable.

Still...

"U-Understood."

He stepped back and lowered his head.

Once Berton made a decision, he almost never changed it.

And so...

That decision was immediately delivered to Theron.

Unlike the submissive attitude he had shown in front of Berton, Bengle now glared fiercely at Theron.

"Considering what you've done, I wouldn't complain even if we broke your arms and legs and threw you out as food for wild animals..."

Bengle deliberately exaggerated his angry expression.

Even he knew the punishment was unusually severe.

"You'd better behave from now on. If any of you cause another disturbance, I'll throw you straight into the punishment room."

Bengle looked toward the other instructors.

"Take him away."

"Yes!"

The junior instructors grabbed Theron's arms.

At that moment...

"Th-Theron!"

"Theron...!"

"..."

Renil looked especially guilty.

Theron had gotten involved because he had tried to help him.

And now he was being sent to the punishment room.

Every trainee knew how terrifying that place was.

People with weak minds begged to be released after only two days.

"Instructor, isn't one week in the punishment room too much?! If necessary, we could..."

Perka suddenly stood and protested.

Bengle was about to glare at him when...

"Perka."

Theron calmly called his name.

"I'm fine. So don't say anything else."

Theron shook his head.

One more word could cause Perka to be punished too.

Perka understood.

He lowered his head in frustration.

"...Sorry, Theron."

Renil looked close to tears.

He had been sentenced to an entire week because of him.

Theron remained calm.

He looked toward the instructors.

"Let's go, Instructors."

"...?"

Why was someone being dragged into the punishment room acting this calmly?

The junior instructors looked at Theron strangely as they pulled him away.

But Theron's thoughts were completely different.

One week in the punishment room...

He had never expected such a long sentence.

He had thought it would be four days at most.

Instead, he had received an entire week where he could be alone.

"Go inside."

The door to the punishment room opened.

Pitch-black darkness seemed to move like a living thing waiting to swallow him.

Theron entered with only enough food and water to survive for a week.

Then he sat down.

One week...

That was enough time to remove all the flaws in the Darkfin Mana Method.

It was also enough time to combine it with another Mana Method.

And...

"One-Star..."

If he managed to accumulate One-Star mana using the completed method...

I might be able to search for it during the next training.

In his previous life...

There had been something that changed the body of the useless "Idiot Theron."

Something that had even removed the Death Sigil from him.

If he could find it again...

I can become stronger.

Much stronger than before.

Theron remembered Castillo's face.

The man who had driven him toward death in his previous life.

Then he remembered Ashborn Zionheart.

To kill those men, he needed to become far stronger than he had ever been before.

And now...

He was standing at the beginning.

I won't get another chance like this.

If he caused the same kind of incident again just to enter the punishment room, next time they might cut off his limbs instead.

This time was precious.

Theron focused entirely on the Mana Method.

The Darkfin Mana Method taught by the training facility allowed mana to accumulate quickly.

But the more a person practiced it, the more their mana circuits became blocked.

Eventually, they would lose the ability to use mana properly.

First... I need to modify some parts of the circulation formula...

But he had to be extremely careful.

The other instructors might not notice.

But...

Berton.

The head instructor of Hell Island had extremely sharp eyes.

It would not be easy to deceive him.

If Berton discovered that Theron was practicing a different Mana Method, he would immediately suspect him of being a spy.

Theron carefully began removing the unnecessary parts from the Darkfin Mana Method's formula.

And then...

"This is the real thing."

There was another Mana Method Theron intended to combine with it.

The best Mana Method he knew.

And one with the special advantage of being compatible with almost any other Mana Method.

The Tempelst Mana Method.

Its name carried the meaning, "Ghost of the Storm."

It allowed its user to control an enormous amount of mana like a violent storm.

At the same time, it left almost no trace, like a ghost.

Of course, learning it was far more complicated than learning an ordinary Mana Method.

But...

That doesn't matter to me.

Theron had already reached Seven-Star with the Tempelst Mana Method in his previous life.

Circulating it was as easy to him as breathing.

"Huuuuuuup... Haaaaaaaah..."

Theron inhaled through his nose.

Then he slowly exhaled for twice as long.

First...

He needed to mix the Tempelst Mana Method into the existing Darkfin Mana Method and increase its efficiency.

If he completely merged Tempelst into Darkfin, even Berton would be unable to recognize its unique characteristics.

However, combining two Mana Methods was not easy.

Theron concentrated more deeply than ever before as he moved the mana inside his body.

Then...

Fsssssssh.

Mana gathered according to the Tempelst Mana Method and moved toward his lower abdomen.

But having two different kinds of mana inside the same space was extremely dangerous.

If one side was not properly controlled, they could collide.

Slowly... Slowly...

Following Theron's will, the mana created through Tempelst began circling around the mana created through Darkfin.

Almost as if it were carefully examining it.

Then...

BOOM!

A violent collision erupted inside Theron's body.

His entire body shook.

If the energy had exploded out of control, his body could have burst apart and killed him instantly.

Still, Theron calmly controlled the two different flows of mana.

At this level...

There was only a tiny amount of mana from each method.

That meant controlling them was still possible.

If either side had already accumulated much more mana, trying something like this would have been far too dangerous.

This is still the fastest method.

If he wanted to finish the fusion within one week and reach One-Star, there was no other way.

Theron moved the Tempelst mana again.

The two energies almost collided for a second time.

But then...

WHOOOOOOSH!

The two different flows of mana slowly began merging together inside Theron's body.
