Chapter 33

Chapter 33

Hansarang Mart.

After capturing the off-the-books transaction taking place inside that gloomy warehouse...

I arrived at the office earlier than usual the next morning.

It was still early.

No other employees had arrived yet.

A pleasant silence filled the office.

There was also the warm smell of WG Instant Rice in the air.

The factory had been running through the night, producing enormous quantities.

This was the time when those products were being shipped across the country.

In one corner of the break room...

Boxes of instant rice samples were stacked neatly.

I smelled the rice and sat at my desk.

Then I transferred the photos and videos I had taken from my car the previous night onto my computer.

Lee Sejun's greasy smile filled the monitor.

His face as he accepted the thick brown envelope full of cash from the dumping wholesaler.

Every ugly moment remained clearly recorded.

Seeing it again made my expression harden.

Lee Sejun...

He was feeding himself by chewing up the company's money like that.

He's insane.

The more I watched, the angrier I became.

Still...

I forced myself to calm down.

These photos and videos alone would probably be enough for me to go straight to CEO Jeong and destroy Lee Sejun.

Breach of trust.

Embezzlement.

Disruption of the distribution network.

If an off-the-books transaction of this size was discovered even at a major corporation...

It could lead directly to criminal charges and detention.

But I did not want to rush blindly.

Lee Sejun had created more than ten suspicious marts around Gwangju and nearby areas.

Hansarang Mart...

The place I saw yesterday...

Was not even his largest account.

Its order quantity did not rank near the top.

This was only the tip of the iceberg.

And for something like this to continue...

A manager-level employee had to approve it.

Manager Jang Woojin.

It was almost impossible without either his silent approval...

Or his active participation.

I needed to tie Manager Jang and Lee Sejun together and take them down at the same time.

If I exposed everything now...

They might simply sacrifice one person as the tail and escape.

I could not act carelessly.

I needed something deeper.

And I needed to find it quickly.

At that moment...

The office door suddenly opened.

A noisy figure entered.

Im Sanghyeon.

“Yaaawn... Good morning!”

He stretched and yawned so widely his mouth looked ready to split.

The moment he saw me...

He jumped.

“Inwoo?”

“You're insanely early.”

“Now that you got A rank, your eyes are practically shooting lasers.”

“You came early too.”

“I drank last night, and for some reason I woke up before dawn.”

“I figured I'd come here and sleep a little.”

I laughed.

“Was yesterday fun?”

He clicked his tongue dramatically.

“Don't even ask.”

“I was drinking with some people from planning while looking at the instant rice sales numbers.”

“Everyone talked about you nonstop.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“They wouldn't stop praising you.”

I shrugged.

“Well... I guess they wanted to congratulate me.”

Im Sanghyeon shook his head and changed the subject.

“Oh, right.”

“That bastard Lee Sejun left before quitting time yesterday.”

“Did he?”

“Yeah.”

“He normally attends every company dinner so he can brag about himself.”

“But yesterday, he left like he had some urgent appointment.”

I naturally nodded.

He really had had an urgent appointment.

A cash-filled envelope worth millions of won was waiting for him at the warehouse.

Since the subject had already turned toward Lee Sejun...

I asked something.

“Sanghyeon, by the way...”

Even though we were alone in the office...

I looked around before lowering my voice.

“Do you know anything about Lee Sejun's family?”

“You mean his parents?”

He tilted his head.

“Yeah.”

“I thought you might know something.”

There was probably no employee more curious about other people than Im Sanghyeon.

He smiled and nodded.

“Of course.”

“I don't know everything, but I know a little.”

“As expected of you.”

“I think Lee Sejun's father used to run a huge distribution vendor company.”

My eyes widened.

“A distribution vendor?”

“Yeah.”

“I think it was food-related.”

“I'm not completely sure.”

“How did you even find that out?”

He thought for a moment.

“I think I heard it from the owner of one of our regional distribution agencies in Honam.”

“I heard his father once controlled distribution for processed foods from several major companies.”

“But it's a company we don't know?”

“Lee Sejun never talks about his father in detail.”

“So I don't even know the company name.”

“And it felt awkward to ask.”

Im Sanghyeon wrinkled his nose.

“But I vaguely remember something from when we first joined.”

“He bragged in front of Manager Jang that several of his first accounts came through his father's connections.”

“Really...”

“Yeah.”

“I don't know which company it was.”

“But I'm pretty sure it was food distribution.”

Then he tilted his head.

“Why are you asking about Lee Sejun's father?”

“No reason.”

“I was just curious.”

“Suddenly?”

He blinked.

“Look at the car he drives.”

“And his watches.”

“We already knew there's no way an assistant manager's salary could pay for that.”

“I was just wondering how rich his family must be.”

“True.”

“He changed cars again recently.”

“Again?”

“Yeah.”

“This time it's an imported SUV.”

“Guys who work only as a hobby because they're rich are impossible to beat.”

He clicked his tongue and returned to his desk.

Lee Sejun's expensive imported cars.

His luxury goods.

It was almost impossible to believe all of those were funded by money he had stolen from the company.

But something still did not fit.

If Lee Sejun's father really was the owner of a huge distribution vendor...

Why was Lee Sejun working at a small company like WG Food instead of his father's business?

And why would he commit crimes like this just to collect extra cash?

Crimes serious enough to send him to prison.

For wealthy families...

Legally increasing assets and protecting their reputation mattered enormously.

They might interfere to help their son's workplace performance.

But if they discovered he was committing distribution crimes...

They would probably go insane.

I thought for a while.

Then muttered quietly.

“Maybe the entire 'rich family' image is fake.”

A crack appeared in the giant disguise Lee Sejun had built in my mind.

By actively spreading rumors that he came from wealth...

Whenever he behaved suspiciously...

People would simply explain it away as a rich young master's obsession with performance.

Even upper management would think...

He's just using his own family's money to increase company sales. What's the harm?

If I started from that assumption...

Everything became possible.

I needed to destroy this fake-rich-family image if I wanted to catch Lee Sejun completely.

I immediately decided to investigate.

The distribution industry was small.

If his father's company had really been that famous...

Someone who had worked in the industry for years would know.

After only a few connections...

You could often find out who worked where.

Sometimes even how many children an owner had and what those children were doing.

“Who should I ask...?”

I wondered who to visit.

The question lasted less than three seconds.

I already had the most reliable source of distribution information I could ask.

The owner of the largest food-supply mart in Honam.

Ma Juncheol.

“Perfect timing.”

“I needed to check the goods at President Ma's mart anyway.”

I immediately drove toward the food-supply mart.

“President Ma, how have you been?”

“Assistant Manager Choi!”

“You could've come empty-handed. Why did you even buy coffee?”

He warmly grabbed my hand.

“Come on. I can't visit empty-handed. Haha.”

Ma Juncheol pointed at a chair with both hands.

“If our famous Assistant Manager Choi was coming, you should've called ahead.”

“I would've prepared something nice for you.”

“President Ma, what's gotten into you today?”

“Sales have gone through the roof thanks to you.”

He patted my shoulder.

“The instant rice.”

“Everyone in this industry knows that was your work.”

“And because we're getting such a good supply allocation from WG Food...”

He raised a thumb.

“Our sales have been incredible.”

“I was lucky.”

“Luck only follows people who have skill.”

“Thank you for saying that.”

He snapped his fingers.

“Right.”

“I was about to call you anyway.”

“We need to increase orders on several other products.”

“Then I'll take the order before I leave today.”

We talked about business for quite a while.

Eventually, the conversation became more casual.

“You must be incredibly busy these days.”

“It's about the same as always.”

I carefully watched his expression.

Then asked.

“President Ma... may I ask you something?”

He raised his eyebrows.

“Anything.”

“You're probably the person I know who has been in distribution the longest and understands the industry best.”

“Really?”

Apparently pleased, he laughed loudly.

“Well, you could say I've grown some pretty thick bones in this industry. Haha.”

“Then you probably know most of the famous companies in Gwangju and Honam.”

He straightened his shoulders.

“Famous ones?”

“I know plenty of unknown ones too.”

“And not only in Honam.”

“I actually started outside the region.”

“Seoul first.”

“Then Gyeongsang Province.”

“After that, I moved into Honam.”

“Wow. Then you really do know the whole country.”

“More or less.”

“What company are you curious about?”

“If you give me the owner's name, I might know immediately.”

I hesitated.

I did not know the company name.

No one at work seemed to know it.

And asking Lee Sejun directly was impossible.

There was only one thing I knew.

His father's name.

During an old company dinner, employees had once talked about their parents' names.

Lee Sejun's father's name was unusual, so it had stuck in my memory.

“Do you happen to know someone named Lee Sesang?”

“I only know the owner's name...”

His name was only one syllable different from his son's.

Lee Sejun had once said his father had been teased at school because his name literally sounded unusual.

I still remembered that story.

Before I even finished...

Ma Juncheol frowned.

“What?”

“Lee Sesang?”

“Yes.”

“His name is unusual, so I wondered if you might know him.”

His expression became much more serious.

“That sounds like SS Distribution.”

My ears immediately sharpened.

“How does Assistant Manager Choi know SS Distribution?”

“Well...”

I hesitated.

Before I could decide what to say...

Ma Juncheol released a deep sigh.

“Why are you asking about that place?”

What happened with Lee Sesang?

And SS Distribution?

Why did President Ma suddenly look like this?

I swallowed.

Then focused completely on him.

“That place...”
