Chapter 11

Chapter 11

11. Right-Handed Submarine

The Golden Lion Tournament final.

The stadium was packed with far more spectators than usual.

It was the top of the first inning, and Cheongryong High School was currently batting.

Seo Ji-tae smiled from the bullpen as he looked at the large crowd for the first time in a while.

This is how it should be. Baseball is better with a big crowd.

Unlike him, the other Cheongryong players were feeling the pressure of the championship game.

Even the third-years were nervous.

“What are you doing, Senior? Let’s go out there, crush them, then have a team dinner.”

“Uh… Yeah…”

Kang Tae-ho glanced at the hand inside his glove and followed him out.

And so, the championship game began.

Their opponent was Chungdeok High School, one of the strongest championship favorites in the tournament.

From the bullpen, Seo Ji-tae looked at a huge hitter lightly swinging his bat.

“Kwon Geon-woo. I’ve heard of him.”

The heart of Chungdeok High School’s lineup was third-year cleanup hitter Kwon Geon-woo.

In the future, he would become a natural power hitter who won the KBO home run title in his mid-twenties.

Someone who would become the KBO home run king was obviously one of the very best hitters in high school baseball.

He was the heart of Chungdeok High School’s powerful offense.

Their entire cleanup trio was considered one of the best lineups in high school baseball.

But against Seo Ji-tae, that did not matter.

“Out!”

With the umpire’s call, Seo Ji-tae easily finished the bottom of the first inning.

The matchup everyone had been waiting for came in the bottom of the second.

Seo Ji-tae and Kwon Geon-woo finally faced each other for the first time.

Kwon Geon-woo stepped heavily into the right-handed batter’s box.

“Hm?”

Then Kwon Geon-woo did something surprising.

He pointed his bat toward the outfield fence.

It was a declaration of war.

“Oh? You dare?”

He had no intention of backing down against the left-handed fireballer.

It was exactly the attitude expected from a future home run king.

Power against power.

But Seo Ji-tae only looked him over with a smile.

“But I never heard that you reached the Major Leagues in the future. You only played around in the KBO. Home run king? So what?”

Seo Ji-tae had no intention of feeling pressured by some future KBO home run champion.

He simply needed to throw an overwhelming fastball down the middle and crush him with pure power.

First pitch.

A 154 km/h rising fastball flew straight through the middle of the strike zone.

Kwon Geon-woo swung violently.

“Oh?”

For the first time, Seo Ji-tae smiled after seeing someone make solid contact.

With a heavy impact sound, the ball flew hard backward and struck the net.

Foul.

Kwon Geon-woo had shown the bat speed and strength needed to foul off a 150 km/h fastball.

“Good! Send it over the fence!”

Cheers erupted from the Chungdeok dugout.

Seo Ji-tae nodded.

“You’re definitely different from the small fry.”

He entered his windup.

The fastball shot forward like lightning.

Second pitch.

The bat made contact.

But this time, the direction was different.

The ball had arrived with the same fastball timing, yet the contact weakly pushed it off to the side.

“!”

Kwon Geon-woo’s expression changed.

His contact had started getting pushed backward.

Sorry, but I’m still adjusting the feel of my left hand.

Seo Ji-tae quickly threw the third pitch.

This time, a high fastball.

The radar gun displayed 154 km/h.

“Hup!”

Kwon Geon-woo swung with everything he had at the point where he expected the ball to drop.

But because of the optical illusion created by the rising fastball, his bat cut uselessly underneath it.

Kwon Geon-woo’s face twisted.

Seo Ji-tae smiled.

A perfect swinging strikeout.

Seo Ji-tae’s overwhelming power had casually crushed the heart of Chungdeok High School.

Cheongryong took control of the momentum.

Then they scored one run in the third inning and took the lead.

But the first crack in Seo Ji-tae’s perfect game appeared in the bottom of the fourth.

“Hm?”

Seo Ji-tae frowned after throwing the pitch.

The problem was not on the mound.

It was behind home plate.

Catcher Kang Tae-ho failed to catch Seo Ji-tae’s curveball.

The ball rolled all the way to the backstop, allowing the batter to reach first.

An uncaught third strike.

Seo Ji-tae had recorded a strikeout, yet the hitter still reached base.

“…What the hell is that senior doing?”

Seo Ji-tae clicked his tongue in irritation.

Fortunately, he finished the inning without allowing a run.

Back in the dugout.

“Is something wrong with your hand?”

Seo Ji-tae asked Kang Tae-ho.

“No.”

Kang Tae-ho simply denied it.

Seo Ji-tae crossed his arms.

“If you make another mistake, I’m telling them to replace you.”

“I know, I know. It was just a mistake. Seriously.”

Kang Tae-ho desperately hid his injury.

And in the bottom of the fourth, the wound finally burst open.

Kang Tae-ho’s pain became worse.

Seo Ji-tae had not allowed a single hit.

Yet because of repeated catching errors from the catcher, he suddenly found himself in a no-out situation with runners on first and second.

It became a situation where the coach, catcher, and pitcher had to gather on the mound.

Seo Ji-tae’s face twisted.

“What exactly are you trying to do right now?”

The stands stirred.

Cheers erupted from Chungdeok High School’s dugout.

No outs.

Runners on first and second.

And Chungdeok High School’s cleanup hitter, Kwon Geon-woo, was coming to the plate again.

Kang Tae-ho quickly removed his mask and ran to the mound.

His face was twisted with sweat and pain.

“Hey, Ji-tae. Should we just intentionally walk Kwon Geon-woo?”

“…I’m asking what the hell you’re doing.”

Seo Ji-tae did not even pretend to listen.

He pointed his chin toward Kwon Geon-woo, who was swinging his bat sharply near the batter’s box.

Seo Ji-tae had already completely crushed him in the first matchup.

This time, he wanted to toy with him using breaking balls.

“Senior, show me the hand inside your glove.”

“What?”

“Why can’t you catch the ball properly? You weren’t this bad before.”

Seo Ji-tae suddenly grabbed Kang Tae-ho’s wrist.

And finally, the injury was exposed.

“I knew it. If you can’t catch properly, leave the game. You’re just causing trouble.”

“Even if I’m injured, I’m still helping the team.”

“That is causing trouble, Senior. Switch with someone else.”

Seo Ji-tae did not hold back even against his senior.

“Playing through an injury only works as an excuse if you can still catch properly. Let’s replace you before you become the reason we lose.”

“But…”

“Coach, change the catcher.”

Seo Ji-tae looked directly at Head Coach Choi Dong-il and declared it.

Even the coach was speechless after seeing Kang Tae-ho’s hand.

“You idiot. You’re the captain. If you had told me, I would’ve prepared another catcher.”

“B-But Coach, no one else can catch his pitches properly.”

Kang Tae-ho wanted to stay in the game until the end because he was approaching the professional draft.

But Seo Ji-tae had no obligation to care about that.

“Coach, change the catcher. You don’t want to lose from here, right?”

“Tae-ho does have a point… Your pitches are difficult to catch, so finding someone who can handle them…”

“There is someone. A catcher who has practiced with me.”

“Who? Tell me quickly.”

“Lee Jin-woo. My classmate.”

At Seo Ji-tae’s words, Kang Tae-ho and Choi Dong-il froze.

“A-Are you insane? We have other senior catchers!”

A catcher change in the bottom of the fourth inning of a championship game, with no outs and runners on first and second.

Choi Dong-il shouted in disbelief.

“What kind of nonsense are you saying? How is a freshman supposed to catch your pitches in this situation?”

“Lee Jin-woo can catch my pitches. He’s practiced with me. He’s the catcher who can receive them most reliably in this situation. Or are you going to give up here?”

The ace was practically holding the championship trophy hostage.

Choi Dong-il’s face twisted.

“Change him.”

In the end, he had no choice but to signal the umpire for a catcher substitution.

Bottom of the fourth inning.

No outs.

Runners on first and second.

At the plate was Kwon Geon-woo, the best power hitter in the tournament.

“M-Me?”

Lee Jin-woo, who had been quietly sitting in one corner of the dugout, hurriedly put on his protective equipment and ran onto the field.

One unusual detail stood out.

He was carrying two different gloves.

“I-I’m playing in the final?”

His legs trembled slightly under the eyes of the seniors and the suffocating pressure.

With a tense expression, he climbed onto the mound and approached Seo Ji-tae.

He covered his mouth with his glove as he spoke.

“J-Ji-tae. Kwon Geon-woo is at the plate. What do we do? He’s the cleanup hitter. Are you really going to challenge him directly?”

Seo Ji-tae looked toward Kwon Geon-woo.

“I told you I’m going to Major League Baseball, right?”

“Huh?”

“And you think I’m going to avoid one KBO hitter? If my pitches were that weak, I wouldn’t even dare mention the Major Leagues. He’s just practice for me.”

It was a statement filled with both confidence and arrogance.

But Seo Ji-tae’s voice carried absolute certainty.

Lee Jin-woo swallowed.

No way. He’s using the submarine here? In the final?

A thrilling shiver ran down Lee Jin-woo’s back.

Everyone feared the powerful hitter in front of them.

Yet Seo Ji-tae treated him like nothing more than practice.

And he was about to use the right-handed submarine delivery they had trained together.

“Haa… You really are incredible.”

The overwhelming presence coming from the ace his own age filled the mound.

Before Lee Jin-woo realized it, his fear had disappeared.

He gripped his mitt tightly.

The moment those words ended, Seo Ji-tae handed his normal left-handed pitcher’s glove to Kang Tae-ho as he left.

Then he put an ambidextrous glove on his left hand.

Right-handed.

Lee Jin-woo’s eyes widened.

“Ji-tae, are we starting?”

He was not the only one shocked.

Everyone was.

“Whoa!”

The crowd and both dugouts erupted.

Standing in the batter’s box, Chungdeok High School’s cleanup hitter Kwon Geon-woo frowned.

“He’s pitching right-handed now? Has he lost his mind?”

It was the championship game.

No outs.

Runners on first and second.

The hitter was Kwon Geon-woo.

Yet Seo Ji-tae was abandoning the left arm that had been dominating the tournament and switching to his right?

“Hey! What are you doing?!”

Choi Dong-il shouted.

But the game had already resumed.

There was nothing he could do.

While everyone stared in confusion, Seo Ji-tae took his stance right-handed and looked at Kwon Geon-woo.

Everyone else was confused by the sudden switch.

Only Lee Jin-woo smiled.

Show them, Ji-tae. Show them what your right-handed submarine can do!

Lee Jin-woo gave only one sign.

Upshoot.

He knew Seo Ji-tae’s personality.

The first pitch would obviously be a confident fastball from the submarine delivery.

Seo Ji-tae smiled when he saw the sign.

And then it began.

His upper body tilted sharply to the right.

His knees sank so low that they almost touched the dirt.

Only a few centimeters above the ground.

At that exact moment, someone in the crowd shouted.

“It’s submarine!”

Seo Ji-tae’s right arm violently swept through the air.

A white baseball shot forward.

Kwon Geon-woo’s eyes widened.

The ball clearly appeared to be heading far below the strike zone, straight toward the dirt.

Certain it would be a ball, Kwon Geon-woo did not even think about swinging.

But then the snake crawling along the ground suddenly lunged at its prey.

The pitch rose violently in front of home plate and entered the mitt.

The main weapon of Seo Ji-tae’s right-handed submarine delivery.

The upshoot.

The ball slammed directly into the center of Lee Jin-woo’s mitt.

A heavy catching sound echoed through the field.

“Strike!”

At the umpire’s loud call, Kwon Geon-woo’s eyes trembled.

The pitch had clearly been dropping below his knees.

Yet it had risen.

By the time it reached the catcher’s mitt, it was around chest height.

Bright yellow numbers appeared on the scoreboard.

[139 km/h]

The stadium went completely silent.

A short silence.

Then the entire place exploded into noise.

“W-What was that? He threw submarine?”

“That’s insane! He throws 154 left-handed, and now he’s throwing 139 with a right-handed submarine delivery? How is that even possible?”

The scouts in the upper stands were no longer simply shocked.

They were confused.

“He’s a switch pitcher, but it isn’t mirrored overhand mechanics. He throws left-handed over the top and right-handed submarine? How can two completely different pitching mechanics exist in one body?”

As the crowd grew louder, Lee Jin-woo felt chills through his entire body.

The trajectory.

The power.

Both were incredible.

It’s a submarine pitch, and it’s still fast. Hitters will never adjust to this after seeing it once or twice.

The results of the training he had done with Seo Ji-tae were finally appearing in front of everyone.

He glanced at Kwon Geon-woo.

The future home run king was already swallowing nervously.

Lee Jin-woo forgot the pain in his numb palm and smiled deeply.

He felt proud knowing he was the only dedicated partner of this overwhelming monster.

Without even thinking about checking the runners, he immediately gave the next sign.

You want to crush him with power, right?

The second sign was the same.

Upshoot again.

Kwon Geon-woo desperately swung.

But the upshoot, in the high 130s with extreme tailing movement, slipped away from the center of the bat and disappeared into the mitt.

“Strike!”

Two strikes.

Again, the upshoot scraped along the ground before violently rising.

The third pitch was the same too.

Kwon Geon-woo simply did not have the skill to hit its trajectory.

“Ugh!”

Kwon Geon-woo swung with everything he had.

The ball twisted like a living creature as it rose above the bat.

“Strikeout!”

Kwon Geon-woo struck out in his second plate appearance too.

Three fastballs.

A simple three-pitch strikeout through pure intimidation.

But those fastballs were completely different from Seo Ji-tae’s left-handed fastballs.

Lee Jin-woo’s face brightened with excitement.

His left-handed pitch creates the illusion of a high fastball that drops later than expected. His right-handed pitch actually rises. It’ll be hard to find a hitter in Korea with the technique to properly hit this.

He was catching for a pitcher who threw pitches with unbelievable movement.

The fifth hitter was no match for Seo Ji-tae either.

Another upshoot rose violently from below.

The hitter could not even properly understand the trajectory.

“Ugh!”

Startled by the rising ball, the fifth hitter hurriedly put his bat on it.

The result was weak contact.

A shallow ground ball rolled toward the pitcher.

Seo Ji-tae casually fielded it and threw to second.

The second baseman immediately fired to first.

Double play.

The no-out crisis with runners on first and second disappeared after only four pitches.

Seo Ji-tae and Lee Jin-woo high-fived as they left the mound.
