Chapter 31

Chapter 31

31. First, Just Throw the Ball Inside the Square

Lee Jin-woo was nervous.

He took a deep breath while surrounded by KBO legends.

Of course, this boy was nervous just like the other players.

But there was one difference.

He had someone he could rely on.

Lee Jin-woo looked at Seo Ji-tae.

“There’s only one thing I have to do.”

Lee Jin-woo’s eyes sharpened.

And then the fastball show began.

Yeah, this is what you call a fastball!

Lee Jin-woo smiled as he caught the laser-like pitch in his mitt.

There was only one sign.

One finger again.

Seo Ji-tae’s rising fastball slammed fiercely into the mitt.

The fourth pitch.

The fifth.

The sixth.

Every single one was a fastball.

Even the location was the same, right through the middle of the strike zone.

The expressions of the people watching slowly began to change.

“Why is he only throwing fastballs?”

“Is he doing that on purpose? He’s only throwing fastballs, so hit one!”

From an outsider’s point of view, it was a strange sight.

But the members of Invincible Baseball Team fell one after another before Seo Ji-tae’s fastball.

“That’s fast.”

157 km/h.

Each time the speed appeared, the officials were shocked all over again.

“What kind of velocity is that?”

“He can keep throwing that?”

“Without even mixing in breaking balls?”

“No, more importantly, why is he only throwing fastballs?”

Before they knew it, the inning ended.

Then came the next inning.

Seo Yoon-dong, the cleanup hitter, stepped in with a puzzled expression.

“What is he doing? Is he intentionally throwing nothing but fastballs?”

Lee Jin-woo lifted his catcher’s mask.

The nervousness from the beginning was already gone.

“I just trust my pitcher.”

“What?”

“A catcher’s job is to call pitches that fit his pitcher.”

“But you’ve only called fastballs.”

“And nobody has hit one properly.”

“!”

Seo Yoon-dong’s mouth opened slightly.

These boys were not even adults, yet they were challenging former KBO monsters with nothing but fastballs.

“Then I’ll just have to send one flying.”

Seo Yoon-dong was a home run hitter.

Lee Jin-woo felt slightly nervous, but he quickly shook his head.

Ji-tae can handle him.

Lee Jin-woo’s sign did not change.

Fastball.

Seo Ji-tae was the same.

A high leg kick, followed by his three-quarter delivery.

The ball shot out like a whip and collided with Seo Yoon-dong’s bat.

Contact.

Unfortunately, it became a deep foul ball that looked like it might have been a home run.

Even so, Lee Jin-woo asked for another fastball.

Because that was what Seo Ji-tae wanted.

Seo Yoon-dong made contact with the second pitch as well.

But the ball was pushed backward into the stands.

Lee Jin-woo noticed the difference and smiled.

He’s getting overpowered. Even Senior Seo Yoon-dong!

A thrill ran through him.

A legend he had only seen in baseball news was now standing against him and Seo Ji-tae.

Two strikes.

Fastball again.

Seo Ji-tae’s motion became slightly faster.

Then his rising fastball exploded forward.

Even faster than before!

Seo Yoon-dong quickly adjusted his timing and swung.

At that instant, Lee Jin-woo’s mitt caught the laser.

“Strikeout!”

The umpire made the call.

Seo Yoon-dong’s body finished its swing as his face showed disbelief.

[158 km/h]

Only a 1 km/h difference.

But it was enough to overpower the batter.

Seo Yoon-dong struck out.

Lee Jin-woo felt excited after catching such an incredible pitch.

The next batter was the same.

The pitch after that was the same too.

Even when the hitters knew what pitch was coming, they could not match the timing.

“Why can’t I hit it?”

The players of Invincible Baseball Team were retired, but they had once been elite players.

Yet they could not hit even one pitch from this young kid?

And he was only using one type of pitch.

Lee Jin-woo remembered something Seo Ji-tae had once said during practice.

[People talk about magic pitches, but an overwhelming fastball is worth just as much as any magic pitch.]

That’s right. A powerful fastball is practically a magic pitch from a baseball manga!

Seo Ji-tae threw only fastballs, but he divided them between high fastballs and pitches through the middle.

Occasionally he threw a ball outside the zone, but it was not intentional.

Seo Ji-tae was human too.

Sometimes his aim was simply off.

“Why can’t we hit it?”

The members of Invincible Baseball Team grew angry and swung harder.

But if simply swinging harder was enough to hit Seo Ji-tae’s pitches, he would never have made it to America.

Then, when almost every batter had already become a victim,

Tok.

At last, someone made contact with the fastball nobody had been able to touch.

It was their long-awaited chance after spending the entire game swinging through air.

However, the bat head could not overcome the force of the pitch.

It was pushed backward.

The ball failed to carry.

It dropped weakly onto the dirt.

A ground ball right in front of the pitcher.

The hitter lowered his head.

Seo Ji-tae calmly walked forward a few steps.

He stretched out his glove and easily picked up the rolling ball.

He did not even look toward first base.

He simply took the ball from his glove and casually tossed it toward Lee Jin-woo.

Out.

Another inning ended.

The Invincible Baseball Team players, the producer, and the writers all stared at Seo Ji-tae with the same expression.

Lee Jin-woo removed his catcher’s mask.

You really are amazing.

Skill.

As always, Seo Ji-tae proved his words through his ability.

Compared to him, I’m still lacking... but I’ll definitely catch up!

The timid expression Lee Jin-woo had shown when he first joined the national team was now completely gone.

Seo Ji-tae and Lee Jin-woo had proven themselves.

The Team A game could only be described with two words.

Shock and terror.

The producer, writers, players, and spectators could only stare with their mouths open.

[The seniors from Invincible Baseball Team will teach the arrogant Seo Ji-tae a lesson.]

That was the scene everyone had expected.

But it had been completely destroyed.

Seo Ji-tae had only pitched four innings.

Yet he allowed just one hit, no runs, and struck out nine.

The crowd was speechless at the terrifying numbers.

“Is that even possible?”

“He’s seriously good.”

People who had only known Seo Ji-tae through the way the media portrayed him were now shocked by what they saw.

Seo Ji-tae had left for America after finishing his high school baseball tournament.

Ordinary people did not watch every high school baseball game.

But now Seo Ji-tae’s ability had been revealed directly before a general audience.

The result was pure admiration.

The pitching of a sixteen-year-old boy was on another level.

“He really does have the skill.”

One spectator’s comment perfectly described Team A’s game.

“I heard Kim Geon-seok is good too.”

“Yeah. They say he throws about as fast as Seo Ji-tae.”

Expectations grew.

Just how skilled was Kim Geon-seok, who had openly challenged Seo Ji-tae?

Now Team B’s game began.

“Play ball!”

At the umpire’s call, Kim Geon-seok went into his windup.

The overwhelming impression Seo Ji-tae had left on the mound still remained.

Whether Kim Geon-seok knew it or not, he delivered an overhand fastball.

The ball shot forward from his fingertips.

It was certainly fast.

“That’s fast!”

But the crowd’s excitement did not last long.

The pitch completely missed the catcher’s mitt.

It slammed hard into the dirt outside against a left-handed batter.

It was such a wild pitch that even blocking it was difficult.

[155 km/h]

A red number appeared on the scoreboard.

The velocity itself was excellent.

“Whoa, it really is fast.”

“Isn’t that dangerous?”

But the crowd’s reaction was clearly different from when Seo Ji-tae had pitched.

Then came the second pitch.

Another powerful fastball rushed toward the catcher.

But the catcher’s glove had to move far outside the border of the strike zone.

“Ball!”

Unfiltered voices immediately poured down from the stands.

“What is he doing? Is he nervous? Throw properly!”

“What’s the point of being fast if you can’t even get near the strike zone?”

“Didn’t Seo Ji-tae put a 158 km/h pitch right on the upper edge of the zone?”

Thanks to this entertainment program, the spectators could directly compare Kim Geon-seok and Seo Ji-tae.

Kim Geon-seok’s expression twisted.

He repeatedly rubbed rosin powder onto his hand.

Then he threw again.

Another pitch outside the border.

He threw again.

This time, barely a strike.

One strike, three balls.

Kim Geon-seok forced himself to throw the next pitch.

But it bounced before the plate and got past the catcher.

Walk.

“He put the first batter on immediately.”

A spectator laughed.

“It’s only the beginning. If he gets his control together, he’ll be dangerous.”

The crowd still thought he had only faced one batter.

But they soon realized they were wrong.

The next batter was hit by a pitch.

His control never settled down.

Against the third batter, Kim Geon-seok threw another wild pitch.

The runner advanced all the way to third.

The Invincible Baseball Team hitters exchanged looks.

They waited.

They did not swing.

They simply stood there.

“Damn it!”

Kim Geon-seok’s expression was collapsing.

For every strike he threw, there were already three or more balls.

There was no way things could go well like this.

“Ball!”

Another runner advanced.

The bases were now loaded.

The Invincible Baseball Team players laughed.

“Come on, there’s nothing to hit.”

“If his control is that bad, we can just stand here and walk to first.”

The veteran players could not hold back their laughter.

It was completely different from facing Seo Ji-tae earlier.

Kim Geon-seok was simply a young pitcher with nothing but velocity, and no control.

His face turned bright red.

He threw with only one thought, I have to put this one in.

But Team B’s cleanup hitter, Son Joo-hyun, saw the pitch and smiled.

Kim Geon-seok had reduced his velocity just to get the ball inside the zone.

The pitch flew straight toward the center of the plate on an extremely honest path.

Son Joo-hyun smiled.

His lower body rotated perfectly.

A clean crack rang out.

The ball caught the center of the bat and drew a towering arc.

The center fielder chased it for several steps, then stopped.

He could only stare helplessly as it disappeared over the fence.

Grand slam.

Kim Geon-seok’s head snapped toward the outfield.

The crowd clicked their tongues.

“The moment he lowers the speed for control, he becomes batting practice.”

“A fastball without control? Professionals eat that for breakfast.”

“Isn’t the difference between him and Seo Ji-tae way too big? They wanted this guy instead? Amazing, truly amazing.”

Before long, Kim Geon-seok’s legs were trembling.

Against high school players, they had at least swung and missed at his velocity.

But the Invincible Baseball Team did not.

[148 km/h]

The speed kept dropping.

He threw again.

Ball.

Wild pitch.

He self-destructed while showing every mistake a pitcher should avoid.

By the end of the second inning, Team B trailed 7 to 0.

It was beyond brutal.

It was almost pitiful.

Kim Geon-seok was finally taken off the mound.

Even the higher-ups watching could no longer defend his performance.

He walked off weakly.

But then came the problem.

The pitcher replacing him was...

[Oh? Seo Ji-tae is coming in!]

Surprisingly, the next pitcher for Team B was Seo Ji-tae.

“I only threw four innings. I’ll stop the bleeding for you.”

As Seo Ji-tae stepped forward, Kim Geon-seok could not even lift his head from embarrassment.

“Don’t worry. When one teammate struggles, another teammate helps.”

Seo Ji-tae even raised his thumb.

Kim Geon-seok could not even get angry.

He ran off the field as if escaping.

Then he watched Seo Ji-tae with envy as the boy threw powerful fastballs with both velocity and control.

By the time filming ended, the officials, spectators, and reporters could no longer say anything against Seo Ji-tae.
