Chapter 49

Part 48

"..."

"If you don't answer, I'll start cutting off your fingers."

"N-No! The Emperor Guild only provided the money!"

"Then who owns this place?"

"Th-That's..."

The man's eyes darted nervously.

But Yugeon had already received his answer.

No.

He had seen it for himself.

"Genocide."

There was an employee identification card hanging around the man's neck.

And at the bottom of the card was a small Genocide emblem.

CRACK!

Yugeon snapped the man's neck, killing him on the spot.

His eyes turned cold.

He had suspected something like this.

Ever since he discovered that the Emperor Guild had been conducting business with Genocide, it had been difficult not to notice the connection.

"..."

After descending for some time, Yugeon stopped in front of a room.

A thick wall of reinforced glass stood before him.

And beyond it...

"A Goblin?"

A small corpse lay on a bed.

It was a Goblin.

There was an Orc in the room beside it.

And in the next room...

Yugeon's expression stiffened.

"A Dwarf...?"

A snow-white beard.

Short legs.

Thick hands.

It was unmistakably a Dwarf.

The problem was that they weren't inside the Tower.

When he first saw the Goblin and Orc, Yugeon had assumed that they were simply monster corpses brought out of the Tower.

But a Dwarf was another matter entirely.

This is impossible.

Travel between the worlds of different races wasn't possible yet.

The only place where humans could meet other races was inside the Tower.

As he had explained before, even if someone kidnapped a member of another race and left the Tower with them, each individual would return to their own world.

Humans would return to Earth.

Members of other races would return to the worlds they came from.

Then how did a Dwarf end up here...?

The same rule even applied to the corpses of other races.

Even if a member of another race died inside the Tower, their body would return to its original world.

Only items could be brought back.

CRUNCH!

Yugeon tore the door off its hinges and entered the room.

There was something strange about the corpse.

Its right arm was missing.

It hadn't simply been cut off.

The entire arm had disappeared cleanly from the shoulder.

The leg on the opposite side was in a similar condition.

The missing limbs looked as though they had never existed in the first place.

These aren't wounds from combat.

Yugeon moved to another room.

The Goblin's torso was horribly twisted.

Its bones protruded through its flesh, and its face was frozen in an expression of terror.

The Orc, on the other hand, still had all four limbs.

Instead, there were marks showing that its eyes had been gouged out.

"This is insane."

Step. Step.

Yugeon headed toward the laboratory at the end of the corridor.

One of the computers was still running.

Someone must have abandoned the room in a hurry when the alarm sounded, because they had even left their documents open.

Click.

Yugeon examined the screen.

[Dimensional Transfer Experiment No. 183]

[Subject: Adult Orc]

[Result: Failure]

[Left upper limb and lower body lost during transfer. Subject died thirteen seconds after arrival.]

[Dimensional Transfer Experiment No. 201]

[Subject: Human Awakener]

[Result: Failure]

[Coordinate deviation. Recovery unsuccessful.]

[Dimensional Transfer Experiment No. 229]

[Subject: Adult Dwarf]

[Result: Partial Success]

[Biological transfer succeeded, but mental collapse occurred. Communication impossible.]

Click.

Click.

Yugeon's hand stopped as he continued scrolling through the documents.

The more he read, the more the pieces of the puzzle began falling into place.

Was Genocide the organization that discovered how to travel between the worlds of different races?

Yugeon's eyes widened.

Memories of the world before his regression suddenly resurfaced.

At some point, it had become possible to travel to the worlds inhabited by other races.

Members of those races had also begun visiting Earth.

Once travel between their worlds became possible, they could exchange supplies and provide one another with manpower and other assistance.

That cooperation had helped Earth, which was already on the brink of destruction, cling to life for a little longer.

I only knew that some event eventually made travel between different races possible.

But to think that Genocide had been responsible for that development...

Of course, Yugeon himself knew how to travel between dimensions.

What he hadn't known was that Genocide had been the first to discover the method.

"..."

He scrolled farther down.

The early experiments had been horrific.

Parts of the subjects' bodies had disappeared while they were passing between dimensions.

Even those who survived had suffered damage to their minds.

Some subjects had been found in completely different locations.

Others had arrived with only half their bodies intact.

Yet the organization hadn't stopped its experiments.

When members of other races were no longer sufficient, they began using kidnapped humans as experimental subjects too.

They would send people from Earth to the other side.

Then they would try to bring them back.

Whenever one person died, they used another.

Whenever a member of another race died, they found another victim.

They had repeated the process hundreds of times.

So all these corpses were...

They had been nothing more than experimental materials for crossing dimensions.

Just as Yugeon was scrolling down the screen, another document caught his eye.

[Dimensional Transfer Experiment No. 271]

[Subject: Female Elf]

[Result: Success]

[No physical loss.]

[No mental contamination.]

[Normal vital signs.]

[Some experimental results and related materials are scheduled for transfer to Metropolitan Facility No. 2.]

"Success?"

At that very moment...

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Applause came from behind him.

"Impressive."

Yugeon turned his head.

A man stood at the laboratory's entrance.

Gray hair.

A thin build.

And black gloves covering both hands.

A level appeared above the man's head.

[Lv. 90] Logan Berg

He was one of Genocide's executives.

Yugeon was familiar with his name, at least.

"Han Yugeon."

"Do you know me?"

"Is there anyone in the world these days who doesn't recognize your face?"

Logan's lips curved into a smile.

"You're also the one who destroyed the Emperor Guild, aren't you?"

"That's right."

"You've made things very inconvenient for us. You destroyed one of our sources of funding, and now obtaining experimental materials has become a headache too."

"Materials?"

Yugeon's gaze turned ice-cold.

"Yes. Those things."

Logan casually pointed toward the corpses beyond the glass walls.

"Experiments always require sacrifices. Thanks to those sacrifices, we've discovered a path to a new world."

"Haa... So you've been spouting that same bullshit since this far back, Logan Berg."

"What...?"

The moment Yugeon spoke his name, Logan's expression changed.

Only a tiny number of people knew his real name.

Even within Genocide, very few members knew it. Most simply referred to him as the Doctor.

"You bastard... How do you know my name?"

Shing.

Instead of answering, Yugeon drew the Godslayer Sword.

"Heh, heh. Is that your answer?"

HUMMMMM!

Black mana erupted from both of Logan's hands.

RUMBLE!

The floor and walls cracked simultaneously, and the entire laboratory began shaking.

Level 90.

Logan was among the world's strongest Awakeners.

However, Yugeon wasn't particularly impressed.

Ding!

[You have activated Heaven-Annihilating One Sword.]

[Feat 1 has been consumed.]

FLASH!

Slash.

"...Huh?"

Logan's eyes widened.

His field of vision was tilting strangely.

And then...

Thud.

Roll.

His severed head fell to the floor and rolled away.

"I don't have time to waste. Shut your mouth and die."

Yugeon shook the blood from his sword and returned his attention to the computer.

The Elf.

The successful subject mentioned in the document.

She was still alive.

Dash!

Yugeon hurried out of the laboratory.

BOOM!

The door to the isolation room was blown completely off its hinges.

Inside stood an enormous glass chamber.

It was filled with blue liquid and connected to dozens of tubes and wires.

And sleeping within it was...

Pointed ears.

Pale skin.

Long, flowing hair.

An Elf.

She really is alive.

Yugeon quickly approached the chamber.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The machine beside it displayed a normal heartbeat.

None of her limbs were missing, either.

Her condition was clearly different from that of the corpses he had seen earlier.

Her body was completely intact.

"So she's the first successful subject."

CRASH!

SPLOOOOSH!

Yugeon shattered the glass chamber.

Blue liquid spilled across the floor, and the Elf's body fell forward.

Catch.

Yugeon caught her.

Haa... Haa...

Her breathing was steady.

Interdimensional cooperation, huh...

Yugeon carefully laid the Elf on the floor.

Then he returned to the computer and began copying the data.

There's a server folder. Perhaps...

Click.

Tsk. It only contains information about this facility.

Yugeon clicked through the server folder and clicked his tongue in disappointment.

He had hoped to find records relating to Genocide's other facilities.

Unfortunately, the folder contained only information about this location.

Still, it's a good thing all the data for this facility is here.

Otherwise, he would have had to search every computer in the building and gather the files individually.

First, I need to save this Elf.

Yugeon looked at the unconscious woman.

"For now, she's not in any immediate danger."

Hwarin released the wrist of the Elf lying on the bed.

Yugeon had brought her back from the facility near Jejin Station to their base and asked Hwarin to examine her.

"Is there anything wrong with her body?"

"She doesn't have any serious injuries. However, it looks like she was kept drugged for a long time. There are a lot of strange substances remaining in her system, and her mana is almost completely depleted."

Hwarin examined the Elf's condition once more.

From the outside, she appeared perfectly healthy.

Compared to the Goblin, Orc, and Dwarf he had seen near Jejin Station, her body was completely intact.

At the very least, none of her limbs had been torn away.

"Will she wake up once you treat her?"

"Yes. I don't think it will take very long."

HUMMMM.

Pure white light emerged from Hwarin's fingertips.

[Holy Healing]

As the gentle light enveloped the Elf's body, a little color gradually returned to her pale face.

Mincheol, who had been watching from beside the bed with his arms crossed, tilted his head.

"But Hyung, is she really an Elf?"

"Of course she's an Elf."

"Huh... I've seen Elves several times inside the Tower, but seeing one here on Earth feels really strange."

"Same here."

Woojin adjusted his glasses and looked toward the bed.

Meeting other races inside the Tower wasn't unusual.

After all, races other than humans also climbed the Tower.

But they were on Earth right now.

That fact alone made the Elf lying before them an extraordinary existence.

"Genocide discovered a way."

"A way to cross dimensions?"

"More precisely, a way to travel between Earth and the worlds inhabited by other races."

Mincheol's expression became serious.

Woojin's eyes also widened in surprise.

"Was something like that really possible?"

"It is."

Yugeon gave a short answer.

He already knew the method itself.

However, he hadn't expected Genocide to have come so close to discovering it at this point in time.

And now I understand why they conducted so many experiments.
