Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Part 52

At the entrance to the Tower, Yugeon stood alongside his companions and Eilen.

The Tower looked no different from usual.

However, their destination today was different.

"Woojin."

"I'm ready."

Woojin shook the object he was holding.

It was an auxiliary device they had prepared in advance, designed to release mana.

An item capable of projecting spatial distortion outward.

Normally, with Woojin present, they wouldn't have needed an item like this. But this time, they were conducting a test.

It was a consumable item that would break after approximately three uses.

They didn't need spatial distortion to enter the Tower, but they would need the item when leaving for the world inhabited by the Elves.

Under normal circumstances, I would've investigated Genocide's laboratory in the metropolitan area first...

Yugeon had raided the facility immediately after the press conference, only to find it completely empty.

The organization had even set fire to the offices, burning everything so that nothing could be recovered.

In the end, Yugeon had abandoned the pursuit for the time being and decided to travel to the Elves' world instead.

"Let's go in."

Step. Step.

Yugeon was the first to step inside the Tower.

Mincheol, Hwarin, and Woojin followed him, with Eilen entering last.

BZZZZT.

"Everyone inside?"

"Yes."

Everyone nodded in response to Yugeon's question.

"Then let's leave."

At Yugeon's instruction, they all turned around.

The entrance they had passed through just moments earlier was directly in front of them.

It was the first time any of them had entered the Tower only to leave immediately.

HUMMMMM!

As spatial distortion spread from the item, it enveloped Yugeon, Mincheol, Hwarin, and Woojin.

Eilen was the only one unaffected.

"The coordinates have been established."

Woojin hadn't done it himself.

The spatial distortion and coordinates programmed into the item had activated.

More precisely, the distortion would only activate once the coordinates had been successfully established.

"Here I go."

"Let's go."

Eilen took the lead and stepped through the entrance.

The others followed her without hesitation.

Whoooooosh.

The refreshing sound of a cool breeze.

Endless grasslands and fields of shimmering silver grass.

"Wow..."

An exclamation escaped Woojin's lips.

Even Mincheol forgot that he was holding a camera as he looked around in amazement.

An enormous waterfall could be seen between the distant mountain ranges, while unfamiliar creatures drifted slowly across the sky.

And despite the brightness of what appeared to be midday, tiny lights resembling fireflies floated through the air.

"So this is..."

Hwarin looked around, unable to finish her sentence.

Eilen smiled ever so slightly.

"Alvheim."

The world of the Elves.

They had arrived in Alvheim.

"We really crossed over."

Mincheol turned around.

The entrance to the Tower, which had been in Korea just moments ago, now stood amid a completely different landscape.

"Mincheol."

"Yes, Hyung! Don't worry. I've been filming properly since we got here!"

"The camera has spatial distortion applied to it too, right?"

"Yes."

Woojin nodded.

There was no way he would have forgotten something so simple.

"Is it all right to film this area?"

Mincheol raised the camera and asked Eilen.

"This area is fine. I'll let you know when we get closer to the roads and the settlement."

"Understood."

Mincheol slowly began recording the surrounding scenery.

Meanwhile, Yugeon looked at Eilen.

Even her expression was different from how it had been on Earth.

Back then, she had constantly been on guard, like a hedgehog with all its spines raised.

Now her steps were light, and her expression had softened.

She's back home.

It was only natural.

Yugeon smiled faintly and began walking forward.

They had been traveling for about an hour when the previously level path came to an end.

An enormous precipice appeared before them.

It was so deep that the bottom was barely visible.

The distance to the cliff on the opposite side was considerable too.

Mincheol approached the edge, then cautiously took a step back.

"How are we supposed to cross this?"

"Just wait."

Eilen took a small flute from inside her clothes.

It was a simple flute made of wood.

"We can't continue on foot from here."

"Then how do we get across?"

"We ride."

TWEEEEEEET!

A long, high-pitched whistle rang out beyond the cliff.

Eilen blew the flute three times at regular intervals before lowering it.

"Now we wait."

"?"

Mincheol swept his camera across the sky.

A short while later, Woojin was the first to notice something.

"Over there."

"Where?"

"Up there."

Everyone turned their gaze in the same direction.

At first, it looked like a bird.

However, as it drew closer, its size began to seem rather strange.

"...What is that?"

Mincheol stared with his mouth hanging open.

The creature had a broad, flat body that seemed to glide effortlessly through the air.

Its shape resembled an enormous stingray, and a passenger compartment made from wood and leather had been installed on its back.

"It's a Ravion."

"A Ravion?"

"Yes. We use them to travel long distances. They're very gentle creatures."

As the Ravion approached the cliff, it tilted its body and slowly began descending.

Whoooooosh.

A powerful gust of wind swept across the area as its enormous body came down.

"Hyung."

Mincheol, who had been about to board the Ravion, lowered his camera and pointed into the distance.

"What's that? Over there, really far away."

Yugeon followed his gaze.

Beyond the horizon, at a distance far greater than the mountain ranges, stood a tree of an almost unimaginable size.

It was an enormous tree that rose straight through the clouds.

Despite being so far away that everything else appeared no larger than grains of sand, the World Tree still stretched high into the sky.

Its sheer scale seemed to distort their sense of perspective.

"The World Tree."

Yugeon answered casually.

He remembered it because he had visited Alvheim before his regression.

"...How did you know?"

Eilen stared at him in surprise.

She hadn't even mentioned the World Tree, so how had he recognized it?

"Well, it's pretty common knowledge that the Elves have a World Tree in their world. With something that enormous growing in the middle of nowhere, it's not exactly difficult to figure out what it is."

"Ah."

Eilen nodded.

"Can I film that?"

"From this distance, it's fine."

"Got it."

Mincheol immediately captured the World Tree on camera.

Yugeon admired the sight for a little longer before stepping onto the Ravion's back.

On the Ravion's back was a passenger compartment resembling the basket of a hot-air balloon.

It was large enough to hold at least ten people comfortably.

The Elf pilot standing at the front widened his eyes the moment he saw Eilen.

"Huh?!"

"Long time no see."

"H-How...? I heard you'd gone missing..."

"I'll explain everything once we reach the city."

The pilot's gaze moved toward the humans behind her.

His expression immediately stiffened.

"Humans...?"

"They're my guests."

"...Understood."

Those few words were enough to stop him from asking any more questions.

As Eilen took hold of the railing, the Ravion slowly rose into the air.

Whoooooosh.

The precipice rapidly fell away beneath them.

"Wooooow..."

Mincheol couldn't contain his amazement.

Forests, rivers, and small villages passed quickly below their feet.

"So the Elves don't all live in one place."

"Of course not."

Eilen answered Woojin's remark.

"We have several cities and plenty of villages. There are kingdoms too."

"You have kings?"

"If there are kingdoms, obviously there are kings. However, individual cities are governed by councils of elders."

Eilen held up five fingers.

"Each city has five elders."

Places that weren't directly governed as kingdoms were administered by their five elders.

Eventually...

"There it is."

A city appeared between the trees.

"Wow..."

This time, even Hwarin let out a quiet exclamation.

The first things that caught her attention were the enormous tree stumps.

Each stump was as large as a two-story building, with windows and doors built into it.

Small gardens had even been constructed on top.

There were stone buildings scattered among them, but the vines and grass covering their walls and roofs allowed them to blend naturally into the forest.

Whoooooosh.

The Ravion landed in a broad landing area on the outskirts of the city.

And the moment Yugeon and his companions stepped onto the ground...

"...Humans?"

"How are there humans here?"

"Look at their ears. They're short."

"Are they really humans?"

Every Elf in the vicinity stopped what they were doing.

Merchants selling their goods.

Elves carrying supplies.

Young Elves playing together.

Even Elf Awakeners with bows strapped to their backs.

They all stared at Yugeon's group in astonishment.

Some even reached for their weapons.

"Chief Administrator Eilen?"

However, the atmosphere changed slightly the moment someone recognized Eilen.

"The Chief Administrator is alive!"

"Then are those humans people she brought here?"

"..."

The Elves who had been openly preparing to draw their weapons gradually lowered their hands.

Noticing their reactions, Yugeon turned to Eilen.

"Everyone seems to relax a little when they see you."

"Of course they do. I'm the one who brought you here."

"Is that really so important?"

"The fact that I'm walking ahead of you is proof that you're safe to be around."

Eilen spoke as though it were obvious.

"If you were enemies, I would have been the first to try to kill you."

"I see."

Step. Step.

Eilen began walking into the city.

Yugeon and his companions followed her.

The Elves' gazes followed them wherever they went.

However, the atmosphere was no longer as hostile as it had been at first.

Just then, Woojin quietly spoke to Yugeon.

"Hyung."

"What?"

"Everyone keeps calling Eilen the Chief Administrator."

"I heard."

"What kind of administrator is she?"

Eilen's ears twitched slightly as she walked ahead of them.

"I train the Elves who are going to enter the Tower."

She had overheard Woojin's whispered question and decided to answer it herself.

"Combat, survival, and even the rules they need to follow inside the Tower. I'm the Chief Training Administrator."

"Looks like you're a much more important person than I thought."

Yugeon chuckled.

In the center of the city stood an enormous tree.

It was nowhere near the size of the World Tree, but its trunk was much thicker than those of the surrounding trees.

A broad entrance had been carved between its roots.

Eilen entered, and Yugeon's group followed her inside.

Within the tree was a circular meeting hall.

And at the far end, five Elves were waiting.

Some appeared quite elderly, while others looked roughly middle-aged by human standards.

Eilen stopped when she saw them.

"Elders."

All five turned toward her simultaneously.

"Eilen."

"So you really are alive."

"...Thank goodness."

The elder in the center rose from his seat.

Eilen lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

"What are you apologizing for?"

"I failed to protect the others who went with me."

The meeting hall fell silent.

Eilen's voice grew a little quieter.
