Chapter 1

Chapter 1

“Haaah...!”

Had his breathing stopped for a moment?

Do-jin slowly drew in a deep breath.

The smell of rusted iron stung his nose, but he no longer even registered something like that.

He was used to it.

Corpses.

Everything around him was either a corpse or a ruin.

“...Am I the only one left?”

No.

Even if some of his companions were still alive nearby, it would not change the situation much.

Perhaps for them, being able to die now was actually a blessing.

“...”

Do-jin raised his head and looked at the sky.

Shrieeeeeek!

Shaaaaaaaaah!

The sky had lost its blue color and was covered in cracks.

Saying that the sky itself had cracked sounded absurd, but that was exactly what Do-jin was seeing.

It looked like a sheet of glass about to shatter and collapse at any moment.

And monsters continued pouring endlessly through those cracks.

They were nothing like the ordinary monsters Do-jin had encountered until now, such as orcs or trolls.

They looked like enormous slimes without any fixed shape, constantly twisting and squirming.

Yet those shapeless monsters were covered with countless eyes and mouths.

Their countless eyes endlessly searched for humans.

Their countless mouths devoured every human they found without leaving even one behind.

And now...

Only a single monster and a single human remained.

“...!”

Do-jin's aura surged into his spear with a roar.

He poured in every skill and item effect he had acquired until now, and immense mana gathered at the tip of his double-bladed spear.

Wheeeeeeng!

The highly compressed mana began spinning with terrifying force.

And...!

Do-jin awakened another power he had only recently learned to control.

He was not yet very skilled with it.

But this was the only way he could defeat the monster before him.

Hoo...!

The golden mana contained within the spear itself mixed with Do-jin's unique green aura.

Then a strange black energy began blending into them.

Black energy.

It was a power Do-jin had awakened after spending ten years constantly crossing the line between life and death.

Death Energy.

Do-jin had repeatedly crawled through the narrow gap between life and death, struggling to survive and seize victory.

Over time, death itself had become familiar to him.

At some point, he had become able to see the energy of death.

Then he learned to contain it within his body.

Eventually, he reached the point where he could control it with his own will.

That was the decisive reason Do-jin had been able to reign as humanity's strongest.

However, the monster did not remain idle.

When they had first appeared, the creatures had overwhelmed Do-jin's companions with sheer numbers, killing and devouring them one after another.

But perhaps because Do-jin's companions had fallen one by one until no other survivors were left to eat...

Or perhaps because they had begun to feel threatened by Do-jin, the one human who was killing them instead...

The monsters displayed a reaction they had never shown before.

The creatures that had been scattered everywhere, busy consuming human corpses, suddenly rushed toward the green monster.

Splat!

One after another, they stuck themselves onto it.

And began transforming into one gigantic creature.

Yes.

The very monster now standing before Do-jin.

“What is this, Phase Two?”

Do-jin stared past the shapeless monster at the countless cracks in the sky.

More monsters were still emerging from them.

The only difference from when the battle had begun was that the newly arriving monsters no longer scattered.

Instead, they immediately fused with the surviving monster in front of him.

“...”

Do-jin gritted his teeth as he watched.

“...Fine. Let's take this all the way to the end, you bastards.”

Do-jin sharply turned his head and took in everything around him.

His companions, half-eaten and discarded.

Their eyes were still wide open in death.

The land itself had turned black and lifeless.

“...Come!”

His aura was nearly depleted.

But there was one power he could draw upon without limit.

Especially now, with reality itself approaching destruction.

Death Energy.

The entire world was filled with death.

Because of that, Death Energy had become the one power he could use freely and endlessly.

At Do-jin's command, the Death Energy around him began to move.

It flowed through Do-jin.

Then toward the spear in his hand.

Shrieeeeeeeeeeeek!!!

The monster sensed that something was wrong and screamed like it was wailing in terror.

As if desperate to gather even a little more strength, it swallowed everything around it and expanded its body.

Fragments of his companions' corpses.

The bodies of monsters Do-jin had killed.

Even the soil and rubble contaminated by the residual mana of those corpses.

Do-jin became certain.

This would be his final battlefield.

Humanity was already finished.

What was the point of surviving alone?

Even if he stubbornly clung to life, he would eventually die by himself on this dead land.

In that case...

“...Die!”

He would take at least one more bastard with him.

As if responding to its master's determination, the Death Energy and aura gathered from every direction resonated with Do-jin's spear.

The violent mana seemed ready to become a vortex and burst forward at any moment, eager to devour the prey before him.

The monster stopped expanding.

Apparently, it had already consumed everything nearby that could be eaten.

Creeeeak...

Thousands of eyes and thousands of mouths all turned toward Do-jin at once.

Eyes of different colors and sizes rolled across its mottled flesh.

Every eye was bloodshot.

The mouths scattered across its body exposed disgusting teeth.

Their tongues flicked in and out while they released incomprehensible screams.

Wheeeeeeeeeeng...

Along with a transcendent sound created by colliding particles of mana, the monster began concentrating its power.

The energy gathered.

Compressed.

And then exploded toward Do-jin.

At that exact moment, Do-jin leaped from the ground.

CRACK!

Like a bolt of lightning, he drove his spear downward.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■!!!!!!!!!!

A bizarre, agonized roar that could no longer even be properly recognized by human ears shook the entire area.

The monster could not withstand Do-jin's final attack.

It vanished.

And above the dead land where nothing remained, Do-jin fell like a discarded doll after exhausting every last bit of mana in his body.

He would probably follow his companions soon.

That was fine.

Dying after destroying that monster was far better than dying while leaving it alive.

“...”

No more monsters were pouring out.

Yet cracks still covered the sky.

The land was dead.

And that was not a metaphor.

No plants could grow here.

Not even a single insect could survive.

Monster or Player.

Unless a living being possessed mana, it could not remain alive here for long.

And it was not only the land beneath Do-jin.

Every piece of land on Earth had been contaminated in the same way.

It had happened when the dungeons disappeared and those damned shapeless monsters emerged.

Kill the monsters, and humans survived.

But when those monsters died, the corrupted mana released from their bodies contaminated the land.

Naturally, nearby humans were not exempt from its effects.

Just like Do-jin now.

He had clearly won.

Yet he was still dying.

[Warning.]

[Debuff: Primordial Chaos.]

[If it is not removed within 30 seconds, you will become part of Chaos and disappear.]

[Remove it immediately.]

He was now in the same condition as all the companions who had defeated countless monsters only to die afterward.

But after watching his companions die before him, Do-jin had already guessed what his own fate would be.

He did not care.

Something else filled his thoughts instead.

“If humanity had only cleared the tutorial properly...”

Was it because he had just finished such an intense battle?

Burnout?

Or perhaps this was simply how a person accepted death.

Consumed by a terrible sense of emptiness, Do-jin continued muttering.

Old memories flashed through his mind like a revolving lantern.

The Great Transformation had begun roughly...

Ten years ago.

At first, it had not been serious.

No.

If anything, many of the changes had actually benefited humanity.

Thanks to the new resources known as Magic Stones and Gold, mankind entered a second golden age.

Some chosen Players gained enormous wealth and glory.

That was why people openly said things like this at the time.

“The Great Transformation is a gift from God to humanity!”

That paradise became hell five years later.

The first five years had only been the tutorial.

Then the Main Scenario began.

“We didn't even know it was a tutorial. We spent five whole years chasing Gold and Magic Stones...”

During the five years of the tutorial, humanity had become obsessed with the Magic Stones and Gold rewarded by the System.

During the tutorial season, Players could display spectacular abilities inside Arenas.

But in reality, they were barely different from ordinary people.

At best, Players in the real world could bend spoons or summon a single mascot-like low-ranking spirit.

Even physically stronger Players were not true superhumans.

Once they logged out of an Arena, guns and blades could still subdue them.

Magic Stones and Gold, however, immediately contributed to scientific and economic progress in the real world.

Magic Stones revolutionized civilization even more dramatically than iron had in ancient history.

Gold provided humanity, which had been suffering from energy shortages, with an almost limitless supply of incredibly efficient energy.

Unlike oil or nuclear power, it created no pollution.

It was practically humanity's ideal resource.

So rather than risk entering difficult Arenas, failing, and embarrassing themselves, Players preferred steadily collecting Magic Stones and Gold from easy Arenas.

As a result, humanity placed Player growth on the back burner.

Only later did people realize that this had been humanity's fatal mistake.

Once the Main Scenario began, countless dungeons opened.

As difficulty increased, humanity was slowly pushed onto the defensive.

Eventually, Monster Waves erupted indiscriminately across the entire world.

Humanity lost vast amounts of knowledge, technology, and lives.

Civilization collapsed.

It was not as though the Players had simply continued fooling around.

The moment the tutorial ended and they realized their suppressed powers had been fully released in reality, they desperately began leveling up and fighting monsters.

But it was too late.

No matter how hard humanity struggled, the Players could not keep pace with the monsters' growth.

Only then did mankind realize that those wasted five years had been their golden opportunity.

They mourned.

But everything was already too late.

In the end, only five humans survived long enough to participate in the final battle.

Do-jin was one of them.

And when that final battle ended...

Lee Do-jin became the last human alive on Earth.

“...”

That was when a notification window appeared for no apparent reason.

[Quest Complete.]

[Winner: Player Lee Do-jin.]

[Searching for the reward desired by the Player.]

“...A reward? You're giving a reward to someone who's about to die?”

Do-jin sneered.

The System was thorough to the bitter end.

But when the reward window appeared, Do-jin's expression immediately stiffened.

[Quest Reward - Choice at the Crossroads]

[Player Lee Do-jin may choose one of the following options to continue the game.]

[1. Ascension into a Higher-Dimensional Being]

[2. Reset]

He had no idea what a "Higher-Dimensional Being" in the first option actually meant.

But Reset?

If it really meant reset...

“...Are you saying I can return to the past?”

Thump!

Thump!

Do-jin was the only living being left on Earth.

There was no reason he should hear such a sound.

And yet, it felt as though the pounding of his own heart echoed directly beside his ears.

“If I can start again... then...!”

His trembling fingers reached toward the reward.

No.

They were about to.

“Ugh...!”

A sudden pain struck him.

Or perhaps it was pain he had only just become conscious of.

It whipped through his entire body.

At the same time, his health began dropping rapidly.

It was the effect of the debuff from the warning window.

“Ghk...!”

Why was it happening so quickly?!

Do-jin gritted his teeth.

A horrifying pain unlike anything he had ever experienced swallowed his entire body.

“Damn it!”

Just before his body collapsed, Do-jin barely managed to move one finger.

[Player Lee Do-jin has selected <Reset> as the reward.]

[The game will now be reset according to the Player's choice.]

[Reset point: August 25, 2026, eight years ago, the day the target awakened.]

[Rewinding Earth's time to August 25, 2026.]
