Chapter 44

Chapter 44: Name Value

Geonwoo looked at Han Eunchae again.

[Compatibility: 94 points]

The highest score among all the Princess candidates.

But the performance he had just seen didn’t fully explain that difference.

His gaze went to the remaining lines.

[Tendency to predetermine a scene’s emotion and reactions]

[Limited experience responding to unexpected choices from scene partners]

Geonwoo thought back to her performance.

The moment she lowered her gaze after the deposed Crown Prince criticized the King.

The timing of her breath.

The moment she looked back at him.

It was a well-prepared performance.

Because it was so prepared, Geonwoo had something else he wanted to check.

“Actress Han Eunchae.”

“Yes?”

“Let’s see one more scene besides the assigned one.”

Eunchae looked at him.

“A different scene?”

“Yes.”

Eunchae thought briefly, then nodded.

“Sure. Which one?”

Geonwoo flipped through the open screenplay.

Then his hand stopped.

“Let’s use the scene you mentioned earlier.”

“The one where she goes to get the young Prince?”

“Yes.”

Eunchae opened her script.

“Give me a moment.”

“I haven’t memorized that scene.”

“You don’t need to.”

“You can read from the script.”

“Okay.”

“Still, give me a little time.”

Eunchae continued,

“I want to check what happens before and after it and organize the overall flow.”

“Of course.”

She returned to her seat and picked up the screenplay.

Her fingers moved quickly through the pages.

It was the scene where Yeonhwi entered the inner palace and took the young Prince with her.

She checked the dialogue before and after the selected section.

The casting director also found the scene and gave a copy to the reading actor.

After reviewing the script, Eunchae raised her head.

This time, she kept the screenplay in her hand.

“I’m ready.”

She returned to the filming position with the reading actor.

“We’ll begin.”

The camera rolled.

The reading actor spoke first.

“Your Highness. You cannot enter right now.”

Eunchae’s gaze dropped to the script.

“Whose order is that?”

Her response came slightly late.

It wasn’t as smooth as her prepared scene.

“Her Majesty the Queen ordered that no one be allowed inside.”

Eunchae looked at the other actor.

“I will see the Prince.”

The reading actor stepped forward.

“Please return.”

He came closer than expected.

Eunchae’s shoulders stiffened for an instant.

Then she immediately corrected her posture.

“I’ll speak to Her Majesty myself.”

Geonwoo raised a hand.

“Hold on.”

The camera stopped.

Eunchae looked at him.

“Yes?”

Geonwoo asked,

“Does Yeonhwi need that person’s permission to enter?”

Eunchae didn’t immediately answer.

She checked the line she had just said.

Then she turned back a little farther and shook her head.

“No.”

“But just now, you were trying to get permission.”

Eunchae looked down at the script.

“You’re right.”

“Yeonhwi has already decided to take the Prince and leave.”

Geonwoo continued,

“Show me that.”

“Yes.”

Eunchae read the section again.

“Let’s continue from where we stopped.”

At Geonwoo’s words, Eunchae and the reading actor returned to their previous positions.

The camera rolled again.

“Please return.”

This time, Eunchae didn’t immediately answer.

She looked at the other actor first.

Unlike before, there was no expression suggesting she was deciding how to persuade him.

Eunchae took one step forward.

“I’ll speak to Her Majesty myself.”

The line was exactly the same.

But now, it no longer sounded like she was asking permission.

It sounded like a declaration.

She was going inside.

If that caused a problem, she would personally speak to the Queen.

The reading actor’s eyes shifted briefly.

Eunchae continued the performance while checking the script.

Because she hadn’t prepared the scene, some lines arrived a beat late.

When the reading actor moved differently from what she expected, her reaction was sometimes delayed too.

Even so, something had changed.

Geonwoo raised his hand.

“Cut.”

The camera stopped.

Eunchae lowered the script and breathed out.

“Was it really obvious I hadn’t prepared?”

“Yes.”

The producer glanced sideways at Geonwoo in surprise.

The casting director’s eyes widened too.

Even Eunchae briefly looked startled.

Geonwoo immediately continued.

“But that was better.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Dialogue can be practiced.”

“In the first scene, you were already preparing your next reaction before your partner finished speaking.”

“And just now?”

“You watched your partner before moving.”

“That means the acting rhythm connected between the two of you.”

Eunchae remained silent for a moment.

She seemed to be replaying the performance in her head.

Then she nodded.

“I need to fix that.”

“We can work on it together during readings later.”

At those words, Eunchae looked up.

Geonwoo paused, then added,

“If you’re cast.”

Eunchae chuckled.

“Yes.”

“If I’m cast.”

A faint smile appeared on Geonwoo’s face too.

Her second performance hadn’t been as smooth as the first.

Checking the script interrupted her rhythm.

When her scene partner moved unexpectedly, her response sometimes came a beat late.

Yet strangely, she felt more like Yeonhwi.

Even without forcing her presence, your eyes went toward her.

Only then did Geonwoo understand the score of ninety-four.

It wasn’t because Han Eunchae’s acting was overwhelmingly superior to the other candidates.

Her historical-drama experience and improvisational responses still needed work.

But she already possessed the attitude and presence Yeonhwi needed.

The weak points could be built up later.

Geonwoo looked away from the monitor.

“That’s enough for today.”

“Okay.”

Eunchae closed the script.

“Thank you.”

“Thank you for coming.”

She also greeted the producer and casting director.

Then Eunchae left with the screenplay.

The door closed.

The casting director immediately asked,

“Director, what did you think?”

“She was good.”

The producer laughed.

“You’ve said ‘good’ a lot today.”

“There are a lot of good actresses.”

The producer looked at Eunchae’s evaluation sheet.

“Still, Han Eunchae seemed a little different to you.”

Geonwoo checked the remaining audition schedule.

There were still actresses left to see.

“Let’s finish seeing everyone before we discuss it.”

“Understood.”

The remaining auditions for the Princess continued for another two days.

Good actresses kept appearing.

Geonwoo watched every scheduled candidate.

After the final actress left, the casting director closed the door.

“Whew. Finally finished.”

The producer looked at the pile of evaluation sheets.

“Why is choosing one Princess this difficult?”

The casting director laughed.

“Because we’re not choosing the best out of bad actresses.”

The producer nodded with a laugh.

“Let’s narrow down the people we want to reconsider first.”

The casting director opened the evaluations.

Names of actresses who had received high marks over the past several days had been marked.

“I think we should keep this actress.”

The producer pointed at one name.

“Agreed.”

“She was definitely the most stable in the historical-drama aspect.”

The casting director pointed at another.

“She’s difficult to remove too.”

“She looked the most natural opposite the deposed Crown Prince.”

One actress had been good but felt too strong compared with Geonwoo’s Yeonhwi.

Another showed the family relationship well, but her performance felt farther from Yeonhwi’s decisive nature later in the story.

The casting director separated those two profiles.

“Let’s keep these two for now.”

The producer nodded.

“Yes. Agreed.”

Geonwoo nodded too.

The casting director turned another evaluation page.

“What about this actress?”

Geonwoo checked the name.

“She was good.”

“But she felt slightly stronger than Yeonhwi.”

“I thought something similar.”

The producer moved the profile aside.

The next name came up.

This time, opinions differed.

The casting director wanted to keep her.

The producer didn’t think she had a distinctive enough advantage over the previous candidates.

Geonwoo briefly replayed her audition footage.

“Let’s remove her.”

One by one, the list shrank.

Some actresses were easy decisions.

Others required watching the footage again.

Evaluations and profiles moved back and forth for quite some time.

Then the casting director stopped on one page.

“What about Han Eunchae?”

The producer answered immediately.

“I think we should keep her.”

“Me too.”

“Her second performance was pretty memorable.”

Both looked toward Geonwoo.

“Director?”

“Keep her.”

The casting director placed Han Eunchae’s profile with the remaining candidates.

The meeting continued a little longer.

After replaying the footage of one final actress, the producer stopped the video.

Most of the profiles that had initially covered the table had been moved aside.

Three remained.

Han Eunchae was one of them.

The producer leaned back.

“Three left.”

The casting director looked over all three.

“We need to choose one.”

The producer looked at Geonwoo.

“Director, have you made up your mind?”

Geonwoo looked at the three profiles in turn.

All three were more than good enough.

But if he had to select one, his answer was already clear.

“Yes.”

Geonwoo pulled Han Eunchae’s profile forward.

“Let’s cast Han Eunchae as Yeonhwi.”

The casting director nodded.

“She was the one who stayed in my memory the most too.”

The producer looked down at the profile.

“She’ll have more to prepare than the other two, though.”

“Yes.”

“But we also have plenty of time to prepare.”

The producer smiled briefly.

“Then the Princess is decided.”

“I’ll contact her agency immediately.”

“Please check not only the shooting schedule but also the reading, costume, and makeup-test schedules.”

“Understood.”

That afternoon, Han Eunchae’s agency received the audition result.

Their answer came quickly.

Han Eunchae wanted the role too.

All that remained were scheduling and contract conditions.

Eunchae already had numerous group activities, advertisements, and overseas schedules.

The production company and agency exchanged calendars.

Several adjustments were made over the weekend.

Fortunately, there were no unavoidable conflicts that would prevent filming.

The contract review was completed the following week.

Han Eunchae visited TS ENM again with her manager.

This time, it wasn’t an audition room.

A contract sat on the meeting-room table.

Eunchae read to the last page before returning to the first.

The Night the King Died

Princess Yeonhwi

Actress Han Eunchae

Her manager asked beside her,

“Finished?”

“Yeah.”

“No problems?”

Eunchae glanced at him.

“You read it yesterday too.”

“You’re the one signing it.”

“I know.”

“I checked everything too.”

Eunchae picked up the pen.

She wrote her name in the designated place.

The producer checked the signature.

“The contract is complete.”

Eunchae immediately looked at Geonwoo.

“Director, when is our first reading?”

“We still need to cast the historian and deposed Crown Prince.”

“There are also many supporting roles left.”

“As soon as all the casting is finished, we’ll schedule the full table read.”

Eunchae nodded and stood.

“Director, I look forward to working with you.”

“So do I.”

Eunchae took her copy of the contract and the screenplay.

She left the meeting room with her manager.

Once the door closed behind them, Eunchae walked several steps before looking down at the contract again.

Her manager watched from beside her and laughed.

“You happy?”

“Yeah.”

“You acted completely normal in there.”

Eunchae looked at him.

“Of course.”

“How could I make it obvious that I was that happy?”

She was still smiling.

The smile never left her lips.

They reached the elevators.

Her manager pressed the button and asked casually,

“What exactly are you so happy about?”

Eunchae thought for a moment.

She had received many film and drama offers before.

It wasn’t her first time signing a contract.

This one was different.

“This time, I got the role after auditioning.”

Eunchae pulled the contract a little closer to her chest.

“That’s why I’m happy.”

The elevator opened.

Her manager stepped inside first and laughed.

“Maybe you should’ve started auditioning sooner.”

“Oppa!”

“What?”

“Can’t you just congratulate me?”

“Haha. Fine.”

“Congratulations!”

Eunchae laughed too as she stepped into the elevator.

Two days after the contract was signed.

Geonwoo was at home reviewing the next casting materials.

The phone on his desk vibrated repeatedly.

At first, he ignored it.

Once.

Twice.

Then a call came.

The producer’s name appeared.

Geonwoo answered.

“Yes?”

“Director, have you seen the article?”

“What article?”

There was a brief silence.

“You haven’t seen it yet.”

Geonwoo removed his hand from the laptop and checked his phone.

The producer had sent him an article.

The moment Geonwoo read the headline, he understood.

[Exclusive: Han Eunchae Joins Director Baek Geonwoo’s New Film The Night the King Died]

Geonwoo opened it.

It even stated that the contract had already been signed.

The production company hadn’t officially announced anything yet.

“They even know we signed the contract.”

“Yes.”

“We’re checking where the leak came from.”

“What about Actress Han Eunchae’s side?”

“Her agency says they only just saw the article too.”

“We’re holding a response meeting together this afternoon.”

That afternoon.

There were more people than usual inside the TS ENM meeting room.

Geonwoo.

The producer.

The casting director.

Members of the publicity team.

They had already spoken once with Han Eunchae’s agency.

A publicity employee changed the screen on the laptop.

“For now, most of the article itself is accurate.”

The producer nodded.

“The contract is finished, so we can’t deny it.”

“Yes.”

“The problem is that it was reported much earlier than our planned announcement.”

They had been discussing announcing Han Eunchae’s casting together with the other major cast members.

But the article had come first.

The publicity employee continued,

“Han Eunchae’s agency wants to coordinate our official position first.”

“For now, they’re only telling reporters they’re checking.”

The producer rubbed his chin.

“What if we just make the confirmation today?”

“That’s possible.”

“But it’ll look like we’re being dragged into announcing it because of the article.”

“We should watch the situation a little longer.”

At that moment, someone knocked.

“Come in.”

An employee entered carrying a laptop.

The producer looked up.

“What is it?”

“I was asked to pass something along from overseas sales.”

The publicity employee looked puzzled.

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

“Since the article came out, overseas distributors have started sending inquiries.”

The employee opened the laptop.

“A Japanese distributor asked whether advance sales of local distribution rights are available.”

“We also received two inquiries from Southeast Asia.”

The producer looked at the screen.

“They’re already talking about rights?”

“They said that if Han Eunchae’s casting is confirmed, they want to negotiate first.”

The employee opened another email.

“A buyer we already had a meeting scheduled with for our Korean-film lineup also asked us to introduce The Night the King Died first.”

“How long has it been since the article came out?”

“A little over three hours.”

The producer laughed in disbelief.

“That was fast.”

The employee opened the next mail.

“Most of the inquiries are asking us to confirm whether Han Eunchae has really joined.”

Geonwoo asked,

“An article alone is enough to make them move immediately?”

The overseas-sales employee answered casually.

“Because it’s Han Eunchae.”

The publicity employee uncrossed their arms.

Their expression had changed from when the meeting began.

“Then there’s even less reason to delay the announcement.”

The producer nodded.

“Let’s coordinate with her agency again.”

The publicity employee picked up the phone.

At that moment, another email notification appeared on the overseas-sales employee’s laptop.

The employee checked it and raised an eyebrow.

“Another one.”

“From where?”

“Europe this time.”

The producer leaned forward.

“What are they saying?”

The employee read.

“They want a film introduction package and our expected shooting schedule.”

“They’re also asking whether advance sales are negotiable.”

Until just moments ago, the meeting had been about how to handle the leaked article.

Now, the screen was filling with overseas inquiries one by one.

Geonwoo looked again at the article headline displayed at the top.

Han Eunchae’s name was the first thing his eyes noticed.
