Chapter 79

Chapter 79: Someone's Death

I shifted my gaze and looked around Lee Munjeong.

“...Shit.”

The scene was so brutal that the curse slipped out before I could stop it.

Two headless bodies lay near him.

Blood continued to gush from their severed necks.

Don't tell me... he tore their heads off with his bare hands?

That was impossible.

I raised my head and looked at Lee Munjeong.

His face was deathly pale, completely devoid of life.

Dark-red veins bulged across every exposed part of his body, including his face, as though they were about to burst.

Bloody tears streamed from both of his eyes.

It felt as though something that didn't belong in this world was standing before me.

“Aaaaagh!”

“H-His head...!”

Screams erupted from the stands a moment later.

People stumbled backward.

Some collapsed to the ground and covered their mouths.

I could even hear people retching.

In an instant...

fear and terror swallowed the entire arena.

People screamed in panic.

Yet Lee Munjeong stood there with a blank expression, completely at odds with the chaos around him.

That made him even more terrifying.

Then his mouth opened.

“Ugh... uuurgh....”

A strange sound crawled from his throat.

It was impossible to tell whether it was crying or groaning.

Lee Munjeong dropped the heads he was holding.

Thud. Thud.

The two heads rolled across the ground, leaving long trails of blood behind them.

Lee Munjeong lowered his head.

Then bent down and picked up a sword lying on the floor.

It belonged to one of the dead Righteous Alliance martial artists.

Blood dripped from the hand gripping the hilt.

Of course...

it wasn't Lee Munjeong's blood.

It was blood from the martial artists whose heads he had torn off.

How?

He was practically dead.

I couldn't understand it.

Lee Munjeong had already burned through all of his Innate Qi.

It wouldn't have been strange if he had died on the spot.

And yet...

he had stood back up.

Worse...

he had suddenly gone insane and killed two Righteous Alliance martial artists.

And there was something else strange.

My sword had pierced straight through his shoulder.

But no blood was coming from the wound now.

It looked as though the injury had already closed.

Something's wrong.

I need to check this myself.

I was just about to move toward him when...

“Move aside! Everyone, move!”

People began rushing up from below the arena.

Righteous Alliance martial artists.

They immediately blocked the path ahead.

The entire route leading onto the platform was sealed off.

“What are you doing—”

“Stay back!”

I tried to protest, but the Righteous Alliance martial artists released a strong pressure.

They even pointed their swords toward me to stop me from advancing.

What the hell is this...?

Meanwhile...

more than a dozen Righteous Alliance martial artists surrounded Lee Munjeong.

“Drop the sword!”

“Put down your weapon immediately!”

Lee Munjeong didn't answer.

“Ugh... uuurgh....”

Instead, he stared at them with a blank face while making that same grotesque sound.

There wasn't even a trace of human emotion in his eyes.

“Lee Munjeong!”

One of the martial artists shouted.

“This is your final warning! Drop the sword now!”

At that moment...

Flash!

Lee Munjeong moved.

He swung his sword and charged straight at one of the martial artists.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The sounds of swords being drawn and clashing rang across the arena.

Then came a choked gasp.

“Ghk...!”

One of the Righteous Alliance martial artists clutched his chest.

Blood leaked through his fingers.

In the very next instant...

Lee Munjeong's sword cut across his throat.

SHWAAAK! SHHK!

The severed head fell to the ground.

The headless body collapsed after it.

“T-This lunatic...!”

“W-What are you doing?! Stop him!”

“Subdue him!”

The encirclement tightened.

Swords rushed toward Lee Munjeong from every direction.

It looked like only a matter of time before he was brought down.

But...

that assumption was wrong.

CLANG! CLANG! CLAAANG! CLANG!

Shockingly, Lee Munjeong blocked the entire curtain of swords crashing toward him.

Only moments earlier...

he had burned away all of his Innate Qi and been on the verge of death.

And now...

his sword was faster and stronger than when he'd fought me.

What the hell is happening?!

This kind of power couldn't come from the Death-Stealing Pill.

Then...

“AAAAAARGH!”

Another Righteous Alliance martial artist fell to Lee Munjeong's killing sword.

His right arm was severed.

The warrior screamed and collapsed.

At that moment...

a gap opened in one side of the encirclement.

Lee Munjeong didn't miss it.

He burst through the Righteous Alliance martial artists with the movements of a beast.

He was heading toward the spectator stands.

“Stop him!”

The Righteous Alliance martial artists shouted and chased after him.

But they were too late.

Lee Munjeong's body had already reached the stands.

“Aaaaagh!”

“W-What the hell?!”

People screamed.

The crowd shoved and stumbled over each other.

Some fell.

Others trampled across them in panic.

Then Lee Munjeong swung his sword straight ahead.

SHWAAAAK!

Four or five people around him collapsed at once.

Every one of them had been decapitated by his blade.

“AAAAAAAGH!”

“Aaaaaagh!”

“S-Save me!”

Terrified screams rang out everywhere.

“Ugh... grrrr....”

Lee Munjeong growled like an animal.

His eyes had completely sunk into madness.

And a new victim stood directly before him.

A young woman holding a child.

Frozen in terror...

she covered the child's head protectively.

Her voice trembled.

“P-Please... spare us....”

But her plea didn't seem to reach Lee Munjeong's ears.

“Ugh... uuurgh....”

He raised his blood-red sword overhead.

The cold blade descended toward the woman and child.

The woman squeezed her eyes shut and pulled the child even tighter into her arms.

At that desperate moment...

CLAAANG!

A clear metallic sound rang out.

Lee Munjeong's sword had been stopped by another blade.

A masked martial artist stood there, blocking the blood-soaked sword head-on.

A different kind of commotion erupted from the stands.

“N-Nameless!”

“It's Nameless from the Dragon-Phoenix Awakening Tournament!”

The cries spread rapidly across the arena.

Nameless....

My eyes narrowed.

Nameless.

The masked swordsman who had concealed his identity throughout the tournament.

The unknown fighter who had defeated Namgung Hyeon, one of the Five Dragons, and advanced to the semifinals.

That very Nameless now stood between the maddened Lee Munjeong and the woman.

“Get away.”

Nameless held his sword at an angle and moved the woman behind him.

Lee Munjeong tilted his head toward the masked man.

“Ugh... uuurgh....”

The same grotesque sound came from him again.

Then...

“UUUURGH!”

Lee Munjeong swung wildly at Nameless.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The speed was incredible.

Every strike was a swift killing move.

Even the slightest delay would mean a fatal wound.

And he was moving even faster than he had against me.

Nameless responded with a fast sword of his own.

He repeatedly met Lee Munjeong's attacks head-on.

But his defense wasn't perfect.

Shhk!

Lee Munjeong's blade cut through the edge of Nameless's clothes near the shoulder.

Blood seeped from the wound.

Had his reaction been even slightly slower...

his shoulder might have been severed completely.

And the danger wasn't over.

Lee Munjeong's sword tip grazed the edge of Nameless's face.

Shhk.

The end of the mask was sliced thinly.

At the same time...

Nameless's posture shifted slightly.

Lee Munjeong didn't miss the opening.

SHWAAAAK!

A killing strike shot toward Nameless's throat.

Another victim was about to fall to that bloodthirsty sword.

Then...

SHAAK!

Nameless's sword moved.

A flash of blue light cut through the air.

And then...

Thud.

Something heavy rolled across the floor.

It was Lee Munjeong's head.

Thump.

His headless body collapsed at the same time.

PSHHH!

Blood erupted from the severed neck.

A fountain of red sprayed upward, staining the ground.

Nameless looked down at Lee Munjeong's body...

then flicked his sword once.

The blood thrown from the blade splashed onto Lee Munjeong's corpse.

"..."

Everyone in the arena watched in stunned silence.

All eyes were fixed on Nameless.

Whoooosh.

A cold gust of wind passed through the silence.

It swept across Nameless's face.

The edge of his mask, already half-cut by Lee Munjeong's blade, slowly peeled away.

Slip.

Then it fell.

The face that had been hidden beneath the mask was finally revealed.

I focused on him.

He looked barely twenty.

Despite having just finished a life-or-death battle...

his face was astonishingly calm.

There was even a faint smile on his lips...

as if nothing had happened.

But the instant I saw his face, one thought rose in my mind.

He looks like someone....

Before I could finish that thought...

someone in the stands gasped.

“Th-The Heavenly Origin Star...!”

That single cry lit the fuse.

“Y-Yes! It's the Heavenly Origin Star!”

“Moyong Seong?!”

“It's Moyong Cheonhwi's son! Moyong Seong!”

The murmurs exploded into thunderous cheers.

Only moments earlier...

the place had been filled with blood and screams.

Now it was boiling with unbelievable excitement.

But not everyone was cheering.

Some clutched corpses and sobbed.

Others held their blood-soaked family members and stared blankly at the sky.

Righteous Alliance martial artists moved with grim expressions as they gathered the bodies of their fallen comrades.

People shouted Moyong Seong's name in celebration.

At the same time...

the faces of grieving families calling out the names of the dead entered my sight.

Something about the whole scene felt horribly wrong.

I started walking forward.

My steps stopped where Lee Munjeong's severed head had fallen.

I lowered my gaze.

His face lay there...

nothing left below the neck.

...Lee Munjeong.

Blood continued to stream from both eyes.

It looked almost like tears of blood.

Then...

my previous life suddenly came back to me.

The flash of blue light I'd seen before dying.

My life had ended with that light.

...Was my head cut off like this too?

Then a voice came from above me.

“Hey, Kunlun's Young Hero.”

“Why are you staring so hard at that ugly thing?”

I raised my head.

And what entered my vision...

was Moyong Seong, smiling with a faintly bloody grin.
