Chapter 77

Chapter 77, The Taiwan Game

Manager Heo Jun thought about it for a long time.

This was the semifinal.

If they lost here, they would immediately fall into the bronze medal game.

The Taiwan game.

There had been no major surprises in Group A.

The United States had beaten every team by mercy rule.

It was like the old basketball Dream Team.

That was what America felt like right now.

They were overwhelmingly the strongest team in the world, crushing one national team after another.

Choi Seong.

Every American scout had come to the stadium to see him.

Yoo Jong-hyeon, who had been expected to form part of Korea’s one-two punch, had struggled more than expected.

I have to dream bigger.

Choi Seong was eligible to pitch starting from the Taiwan game.

He could not pitch against Cuba because Korea’s third starter had gone out.

If Choi Seong threw around fifty pitches against Taiwan...

America will destroy us afterward.

Manager Heo Jun finished his calculations.

As a manager, sometimes he had to gamble.

He would start Yoo Jong-hyeon against Taiwan.

Heo Jun needed a championship on his national team résumé too.

In the end, he made his decision.

He would save the Choi Seong card.

To beat America and win the gold medal, he absolutely needed Choi Seong.

“Yoo Jong-hyeon will start against Taiwan.”

A few players let out disappointed sighs.

Yoo Jong-hyeon briefly glared around him, but there was nothing he could do.

The media had already pointed at him as the biggest reason Korea almost suffered disaster against China.

“We will beat Taiwan, then go all-out against the United States. We can do it, right?”

“Yes!”

Manager Heo Jun noticed Choi Seong’s surprised expression but did not show any reaction.

Only Choi Seong could stop America.

No other player could do it.

“If we give up runs, we score more. If we can’t score, then we don’t allow runs.”

Everyone nodded at Manager Heo Jun’s words.

However, the players were not deeply moved like they had been during Choi Seong’s speeches.

Manager Heo Jun awkwardly scratched his head.

“There will also be some lineup changes against Taiwan.”

Changes were needed in the middle infield and lower part of the lineup.

The top of the order was performing well, but the bottom had been terrible.

There had not been any major defensive errors, but most of them were batting in the low .100s.

“This time, Go Gyeong-tae will join the starting lineup.”

·

Honestly, replacing the third baseman made sense.

Second baseman Park Min-ho was also batting in the .100s, but his defense was excellent, so they could not remove him.

Ahn Hong-gyu had actually done well enough at shortstop.

He was hovering around the low to mid .200s and had even hit a home run against Cuba.

“I’m playing third base? It’s been years since I played there.”

Go Gyeong-tae asked in surprise.

Manager Heo Jun did not change his decision.

Go Gyeong-tae’s weak nerves were about to appear again.

I calmly grabbed his shoulder.

“Senior, just think about playing good defense at third. Nobody expects anything from your bat. Just think of making the national team as pure luck.”

Go Gyeong-tae’s expression somehow relaxed.

I had insulted him pretty hard.

Why did he look better?

Kwon Geon-woo, who had been listening beside us, started looking uncomfortable.

Did Go Gyeong-tae have some slightly masochistic tendencies?

It almost felt like that.

“Thanks. I’ll go practice defense at third!”

“Are you... really okay?”

“Of course! You said it harshly on purpose, right? Somehow, the pressure disappeared.”

At least it ended in a good direction.

When I was about to help him practice fielding, someone grabbed my shoulder.

This pattern was becoming strangely familiar.

I turned around and saw Yoo Jong-hyeon smiling bitterly.

“How do you think I should pitch? I feel like you understand this opponent better than anyone here...”

Lee Sang-heon, who was standing nearby, spoke to his senior.

“Hyung! Just ask confidently. We all need to play well anyway, so what’s the problem?”

Now that I looked at them, the two Incheon Dolphins players had completely opposite personalities.

Lee Sang-heon had a fiery personality and was nicknamed a real man.

Yoo Jong-hyeon, on the other hand, was the type of ace you strangely wanted to protect.

He cried more often than expected and frequently became emotional.

Lee Sang-heon usually kept him steady from the side.

“Senior, are you seriously going to keep acting like that? He’s your junior, your junior!”

Apparently, he was frustrated watching Yoo Jong-hyeon hesitate.

Yoo Jong-hyeon acted completely differently off the mound from the bold pitcher he appeared to be during games.

Then again, Lee Sang-heon was the same.

“Senior Sang-heon, last time you were desperately asking me for advice from the bullpen. You’ve changed quickly.”

“Wh, what?”

Lee Sang-heon’s face only turned red.

He had no answer.

I gave Yoo Jong-hyeon simple advice.

“Be careful with Peng Yuan. He’ll probably bat cleanup. If possible, just walk him.”

Peng Yuan was Taiwan’s famous first baseman.

In my previous life, he played a huge role in leading Taiwan to fourth place.

He was the eleventh Taiwanese player to reach America.

He currently held the Taiwanese records for most Major League hits and home runs.

During this tournament, people would even start calling him the God of Taiwan.

“Peng Yuan?”

“Yes. If you handle him carefully, you should be fine.”

In my previous life, when eight of the nine best-position players at the Olympics were Americans, Peng Yuan was the only non-American to make the team.

Peng Yuan calmly tied his shoes.

Honestly, finishing second in Group A had worked out well.

It was actually good news for Taiwan.

“Choi Seong isn’t starting, right?”

“That’s right. They’re using Yoo Jong-hyeon, the pitcher who got hit hard by China.”

“Good.”

Peng Yuan calmly thought about Yoo Jong-hyeon.

He remembered the huge number of runs the pitcher had allowed.

He also remembered seeing him in Major League Baseball years ago.

Yoo Jong-hyeon belonged to the generation just before Peng Yuan.

He had not made a huge impact in the Majors, but Peng Yuan still remembered his dynamic windup.

“We can win.”

“Of course, hyung. You’re batting .800 right now!”

Peng Yuan was in incredible form during these Olympics.

With a .800 batting average, he had led Taiwan to a 2-1 record and a place in the knockout round.

He even had more home runs than the American players.

He had already hit four and was leading the tournament.

“Right. Let’s win a medal this year.”

“Sounds good!”

Everyone followed Peng Yuan.

Like a real tough guy, he kept swinging his bat.

The air loudly split with every swing.

One hitter could not completely carry a team.

But when someone became a symbol, everyone could gather around him.

“Play ball!”

The game between Korea and Taiwan began.

Peng Yuan looked around.

LA Stadium was sold out.

After this game, the United States and Japan would play.

America would probably crush Japan.

Peng Yuan remembered Taiwan’s mercy-rule loss a few days earlier.

The gap had been absolute.

Taiwan’s league ace had collapsed after allowing fourteen runs in four innings against the American Dream Team.

It had been completely unexpected.

They only kept him in because they wanted to save the rest of the pitching staff.

Aside from Peng Yuan’s home run, no other Taiwanese hitter had even recorded a hit.

The American national team looked relaxed, almost as though they had come to play.

“We have to face America again.”

Peng Yuan promised himself that he would repay that humiliation.

Then the game started.

“Three outs, change!”

Taiwan batted first.

Yoo Jong-hyeon pitched much better than expected.

“This Taiwan game will probably be the final national team game of my career. I’m grateful to Manager Heo Jun for giving me this opportunity.”

Peng Yuan had watched Yoo Jong-hyeon’s earlier interview and felt as though an era was ending.

Yet right now...

It was almost like a final burst of life.

He was burning everything he had left.

On top of that, Yoon Jae-jun’s pitch calling bothered him.

This is going to be a long game.

Taiwan’s manager gave simple instructions.

They could challenge Yoon Jae-jun.

But they would walk Choi Seong no matter what.

Taiwan had carefully analyzed its database on Choi Seong and the rest of Korea.

The scariest hitter was not Yoon Jae-jun, despite his many home runs.

It was Choi Seong, who made different decisions depending on the situation.

“Ball four!”

With Korea’s first and second hitters already out, Taiwan’s starter walked Choi Seong.

Then he struck out Yoon Jae-jun.

Once Choi Seong was removed from the equation, things really did look manageable.

Peng Yuan led off the second inning.

He calmly picked up his bat and stepped into the box.

“Yoo Jong-hyeon.”

A player from the previous generation.

A Major League senior.

Peng Yuan greeted Yoo Jong-hyeon.

Yoo Jong-hyeon returned the greeting.

“Four-pitch walk!”

But...

Peng Yuan stared at Yoo Jong-hyeon in disbelief as the pitcher avoided him completely.

Then why did you return my greeting?

What about our battle?

Taiwan mainly played tactical baseball.

Because they had followed Japanese baseball for years, they had an enormous database.

Was that why they simply walked me?

Still, we made the same choice with Taiwan’s cleanup hitter, Peng Yuan.

It was an interesting game.

Both teams continued playing mind games.

Neither scored through the fourth inning.

Ball four.

Kwon Geon-woo was not in great condition today.

With two outs in the fourth, I walked again.

Something clearly needed to change.

Yoon Jae-jun stepped into the box.

I calmly gave him another sign.

I’m running this time.

I had avoided running much because of injury concerns.

But now it seemed necessary to shake up the pitcher.

145 km/h.

The fast pitch went outside.

At the same time, I ran.

“Safe!”

Applause followed my first stolen base for the national team.

Then...

“Ball four!”

Taiwan walked Yoon Jae-jun too.

The fifth hitter was Lee Byeong-hwan.

Taiwan was facing its first real scoring-position crisis.

“Ball four.”

They walked Lee Byeong-hwan as well.

Why?

Because Lee Byeong-hwan had been in excellent condition throughout the tournament.

He had not hit a home run, but he was still producing his best baseball.

That left Ahn Hong-gyu.

Aside from one home run, he had not done much.

He was a normal defense-first shortstop.

Could he silence the criticism that he was only useful in Korea?

Crack!

At that moment, Ahn Hong-gyu hit the ball.

Everyone looked toward the outfield.
