Chapter 91

Chapter 91, Norman's Revival

Sajik Stadium had been filled with excitement since the afternoon.

Even in the cold air, the cheering was already rising like a storm.

The big match against the Seoul Triples.

Only one game separated us.

Whichever team won this game would take another step toward winning the regular-season championship.

I sat in the passage behind the dugout, running my fingers over the stitching of my glove.

I calmly prepared for my start.

My opponent was the Triples' ace, Kang Mu-hyeok.

Originally, the Triples' number-one starter had been their foreign pitcher, Curly.

But since the middle of the season, Kang Mu-hyeok had completely established himself as the heart of the team.

His fastball reached the high 150s, and he had a slider that worked perfectly with his unusual three-quarter pitching motion.

This season, he had been the only pitcher to hold me hitless in a game.

Ever since that day, the movement of his pitches had remained in my mind.

It never breaks until the very end. The angle of the ball as it leaves his fingertips is always consistent.

I kept imagining that movement.

I pictured his slider in advance and adjusted my swing path.

Today, I would wait for that pitch.

That one pitch.

Top of the first.

Shortstop Ahn Hong-gyu stepped into the batter's box.

He was currently the best leadoff hitter in the league.

Ever since the Olympics, he had frequently sent me teasing messages.

A .300 batting average.

Twenty home runs.

Twenty stolen bases.

He had already become a complete player.

“Hong-gyu, watch out for the first pitch. This guy attacks from the very beginning.”

Yoon Jae-jun muttered while adjusting his catcher's mask.

I looked at the target he showed with his mitt and nodded.

Let's challenge him with a four-seam fastball.

The first batter's bat cut through empty air.

On the next pitch, he hit a high fly ball.

Kwon Geon-woo caught it easily.

I quickly retired the second and third hitters too.

The inning ended after only three batters.

Cheers rose from the stands.

“Choi Seong! That's Choi Seong for you!”

I steadied my breathing and returned to the dugout.

Soon afterward, in the bottom of the first, Kang Mu-hyeok stepped onto the mound.

His first pitch was a 155 km/h four-seam fastball.

Our lineup was quickly overpowered.

I was the only one who managed to attack his fastball and record a hit.

“...This is fun.”

It had been a while since I had faced someone willing to challenge me directly.

However, every other hitter struck out.

Kang Mu-hyeok's pitches definitely had life.

In the top of the second, I pitched even more calmly.

I did not allow a single hit.

The third inning was the same.

The game moved quickly, while the tension continued growing.

Both sides of Sajik Stadium were filled with burning cheers.

Red and navy flags seemed ready to swallow each other.

But in the top of the fourth, an unexpected crack appeared.

Ahn Hong-gyu stepped into the batter's box again.

The count was no balls and two strikes.

I threw a low inside four-seam fastball.

It was the perfect location.

At least, that was what I thought.

But the ball came off his bat faster than I expected.

BOOM!

The ball flew far beyond the left-field wall.

The stands suddenly froze.

“Home run! Ahn Hong-gyu's twenty-first home run of the season!”

The umpire raised his hand toward the sky.

I lowered my head slightly.

It had definitely been the perfect location.

But baseball always produced results that fell outside your calculations.

You really never know what will happen in baseball.

With that thought, I calmly retired the remaining hitters.

At the end of the top of the fourth, the score was 1-0.

I had never allowed the opposing team to score first throughout the season.

But today was different.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kim Byeong-hee approached me inside the dugout.

“Master, are you okay, sir? That's the first time you've allowed the other team to score first this season.”

“I'm fine. If anything, the game just became more interesting.”

He let out a relieved breath.

When I stepped into the batter's box, I looked directly into Kang Mu-hyeok's eyes.

His first pitch was a fastball straight down the middle of the strike zone.

I watched for the movement I had been waiting for.

Then the slider came in slightly.

At that moment, I swung.

BOOM!

The ball cleared the right-field wall.

1-1.

The stands exploded.

The cheering at Sajik surged like the sea.

I slowly rounded the bases.

The heat, the wind, and everything on the field seemed alive.

Inside the dugout, Yoon Jae-jun pumped his fist.

“That's it! Choi Seong School!”

From the fifth inning onward, the silence returned.

Both pitchers were nearly perfect.

Kang Mu-hyeok's fastball was still heavy, while my four-seam had become even sharper.

I continued piling up strikeouts.

Just as he was trying to contain me, I was overwhelming his team.

By the sixth inning, I had recorded ten strikeouts.

The 1-1 tie left almost no room for another scoring opportunity.

In the top of the seventh, I returned to the mound.

Sweat ran down my face, but the feeling in my fingertips remained clear.

I struck out two consecutive hitters.

Against the final batter, I threw a screwball.

Swing and miss.

Another strikeout.

The top of the seventh was over.

The cheering at Sajik Stadium grew even louder.

“Now this is real baseball!”

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, my turn came again.

From the batter's box, Kang Mu-hyeok's eyes looked cold.

I adjusted my helmet and pictured the trajectory of his slider.

I won't be fooled this time either.

The crowd held its breath.

Camera flashes went off.

The ball left his fingertips.

Its movement seemed to blur the line between a fastball and a slider.

I read that tiny moment.

Then I swung with all the strength in my body.

BOOM!

Once again, the sky above Sajik seemed to split open.

The ball traced an arc toward the outfield wall.

Every eye in the stands focused on a single point.

For a moment, the entire world seemed to fall silent.

The ball continued flying high and far.

And finally, it cleared the wall.

It was the hit that broke the 1-1 tie.

Sajik Stadium exploded again.

“It's Choi Seong! Choi Seong has done it again!”

I slowly circled the bases.

The feeling in my fingertips and the cheering ringing in my ears washed over me like waves.

The game was not over yet, but the momentum had already shifted.

2-1.

Kang Mu-hyeok's expression turned ugly.

In the end, we won the game 2-1.

It was the conclusion of an intense pitching duel.

The moment the final out was recorded, the cheering at Sajik Stadium seemed to break through the walls and rise into the sky.

I removed my cap and bowed.

The entire stadium shook, while waves of blue cheering sticks spread across the stands.

Yoon Jae-jun removed his helmet and ran toward me from the dugout.

“Hey, you crazy bastard! You did it again!”

“I was a little lucky.”

“Lucky? You're calling that luck?”

He laughed and patted my shoulder.

I answered with a smile.

Today was a day when I had pitched and hit my way to victory.

Seven innings, one run allowed.

And two solo home runs.

Inside the press room, everyone had already decided who would be the MVP.

Camera flashes had been going off from the moment I left the mound.

Interview microphones crowded in front of me.

When two teams were fighting for first place, every single game received an enormous amount of attention.

“Choi Seong, what was the decisive factor in today's victory?”

“It was all thanks to the team. Everyone trusted each other and kept fighting until the end.”

“Your two home runs were incredible. The battle for the home run title between you and Yoon Jae-jun is going to become even more intense now, isn't it?”

“I'm more than ready to defeat Jae-jun.”

The interview room burst into laughter.

Yoon Jae-jun, who was standing beside me, tapped my head with his finger.

“Hey, don't use me in your interviews.”

“What do you mean, use you? I'm just telling the truth.”

As we returned to the locker room together, the players exchanged high fives.

Kim Byeong-hee shouted, “Now this is the real Oceans, sir!”

Yugam declared, “We made history again today!”

Everyone was smiling.

With this victory, we had increased our lead over the Triples to two games again.

Reporters had already begun using the term championship magic number.

If we finished this series with at least two wins, the championship would truly be within sight.

There was a strange excitement inside the team bus.

But even amid that excitement, I remained calm.

There are still two games left. Don't let your guard down.

The next day, Wright was our starting pitcher.

He was always calm, and he always threw straightforward pitches.

That day was no different.

Six innings, two runs allowed.

His performance was almost perfect.

But the problem, as always, was the bullpen.

The middle reliever who entered in the eighth allowed consecutive walks and hits, giving up four runs.

In the end, we suffered a 6-2 comeback loss.

Wright sat in the dugout with his head lowered.

I sat beside him.

“It's okay, Wright. You were really good today.”

He nodded briefly.

“I still wanted to win. Losing it by such a small difference is frustrating.”

“We're still ahead. We just need to win the next game.”

The disappointment from the loss did not last long.

The following day, in the third game of the series, Norman stepped onto the mound.

He had struggled for quite a while, but recently, he had become a completely different pitcher.

He had trained with me every day and relearned parts of his pitching mechanics.

After lowering his release point by half a hand's width, his control had returned.

Before we knew it, his ERA had dropped into the low 3.00s.

“Seong, today I'm going to pitch exactly the way you taught me.”

“Good. Today is your stage.”

Norman went on to pitch seven innings, allowing only one run.

He faced a dangerous situation in the fifth, but he remained calm.

After the game, Manager Rodriguez spoke to the reporters.

“We are absolutely not replacing Norman. We've developed that much confidence in him.”

A rare, satisfied smile appeared on the manager's face.

That day marked the end of the rumors about replacing our foreign pitcher.

We finished the series with two wins and one loss, regaining our momentum.

The Seoul Triples also lost that day, so our lead remained at two games.

Fans walked through the streets carrying signs that read:

The Oceans' Second Championship in Decades.

My name appeared constantly in the news.

Articles with headlines such as Monster Rookie Aiming for Seven Batting Titles and MVP as Both a Pitcher and a Hitter were published several times a day.

That night, after returning to my room and taking a shower, I picked up my phone.

There was a message waiting for me.

·

You were amazing today too. You're not hurting anywhere, right?

·

I smiled and sent a reply.

·

Thank you. I'm batting second tomorrow. Nothing hurts.

·

·

I see. That's a relief.

·

·

Our next series is in Daejeon, so let's eat together before the game.

·

·

Sounds good. I'll come to Daejeon.

·

The conversation might have looked rather ordinary, but it was not.

I had not seen Lee Su-rin even once since the day I put those tickets into her handbag.

That was why I had gathered a little courage and invited her to a meal.

I was almost surprised by how readily she accepted.

Afterward, I barely paid attention to my food while trying to control my thoughts.

Two goals.

My second meeting with Lee Su-rin and defeating the Daejeon Hawks.

I intended to accomplish both.

The day of our game against the Daejeon Hawks arrived.

Even the noise of the city seemed to grow quiet near the field.

It was the first game of our series against the third-place Daejeon Hawks.

I was not the starting pitcher.

Instead, my name appeared in the lineup as the second hitter.

Before stepping into the batter's box, I looked up at the sky.

I had a feeling that we were definitely going to win.

A single ray of sunlight shone through the thick clouds.
