Chapter 43

Chapter 43. Winter Season (7)

Cynthia couldn’t believe her ears.

Jooheon sounded far too calm.

“I’m blocked because I’m currently classified as an ‘Invader,’ right?”

He casually rolled one shoulder.

Like a man who had dodged taxes this way countless times before.

“Then I just stop being an invader.”

“Simple.”

What the hell was this bastard planning?

Jooheon tapped his arm with one finger.

“Hand over your Majesty Authority.”

“...What?”

What did this bastard just say?

Jooheon grinned viciously.

“Didn’t hear me?”

“Give me ownership of this world.”

“You... are you insane?”

Cynthia shouted with an expression too stunned even to laugh.

“What do you think this world is?!”

“It’s not something I can just hand over that easily!”

“Why not?”

Jooheon smiled as if it were obvious.

“If it’s my land, then ‘summoning’ my Artifact isn’t an invasion.”

He shrugged.

“It’s just taking something out of a drawer in my own house.”

“Do you seriously think that makes sense?”

Then Majesty Yoo Jaeha cut in.

“He’s right.”

“That doesn’t really make sense.”

Cynthia let out a relieved breath now that another Majesty was finally agreeing with her.

Then Jaeha continued.

“You should hand it over to me instead.”

“...What?”

Majesty Jaeha crossed his arms and looked over the entire city.

Half-mocking.

Half-serious.

“How is a rookie supposed to manage a city this size?”

He held out a hand.

“Give it to me. It’s mine now.”

Cynthia screamed.

“ARE YOU INSANE?!”

“WHY WOULD IT BE YOURS?!”

Jaeha smirked.

“Then which one of us do you think is right?”

“Have you considered that neither of you is right?!”

Jooheon looked utterly unconcerned.

“Fine.”

“Then just hand it over temporarily.”

Cynthia hesitated.

“If it’s only temporary...”

“That might actually be negotiable.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe for a reasonable—”

“Thousand years.”

“AAAAAAAAARGH!!!”

It was almost possible to hear Cynthia’s mind snapping.

She dropped to the floor, clutching her head.

“AAAAAH...”

“You’re both insane.”

“You’re both completely insane!”

Jooheon already had his hand extended.

“Come on.”

“The authority to this world.”

Cynthia stared at him.

“...You’re actually serious?”

“Yeah.”

“I need it to summon Hades.”

“Damn it!”

“Only temporarily!”

Cynthia screamed and grabbed his hand.

Then—

[Majesty Authority transfer request detected.]

[Authority transfer: Dionysus → Yoo Jaeha.]

The city system’s voice rang through the air.

Jooheon narrowed his eyes.

“Why the hell are you getting it?”

Majesty Jaeha looked at him like he was an idiot.

“You thought it would go to you?”

“Legally speaking, I’m the invader.”

“I told you I used my Invasion Right.”

He grinned.

“Relax.”

“I’ll register you as my subordinate.”

“Then you should be able to summon your Artifact too.”

A vein bulged on Jooheon’s forehead.

At that moment, golden system text flashed in the air.

[Authority transfer request detected.]

[Evaluating...]

Before Jooheon could reach out—

The system coldly delivered its verdict.

[Denied.]

“...What?”

Majesty Jaeha shouted.

“WHY?!”

Another message appeared.

[Authority transfer requirements not met.]

[Required value: Madness 80 or higher.]

[Current candidate: Yoo Jaeha (Madness 12).]

[Disqualified.]

“...Madness value, huh.”

Jooheon muttered.

Cynthia straightened her shoulders and finally regained a little confidence.

“See?”

“I told you it wouldn’t be that easy.”

She crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes.

“Do you know why I’ve managed to hold onto this city until now?”

“Maintaining that level of Madness...”

“You have no idea how difficult it is.”

Jooheon and Jaeha silently looked at her.

Cynthia exhaled.

There was something strange in her expression.

Pain.

Pride.

Exhaustion.

“You probably thought I drank every day because I liked it.”

“No.”

“I drank because I had to endure.”

She gave a faint, trembling laugh.

“The core of this city eats away at your ‘mental strength.’”

“If I stop drinking even for a single day...”

“I start hearing screams inside my head.”

Yet despite that...

There was unmistakable pride in her expression.

“Still.”

“I endured.”

“Lonely.”

“Exhausted.”

“Unable to sleep.”

She lifted her chin.

“And I maintained Madness 80.”

It wasn’t exactly something to brag about.

Yet she somehow made it sound like one.

“It wasn’t an easy life.”

“All of this was...”

“In its own way, my sacrifice to protect the city.”

Majesty Jaeha muttered:

“...You’re seriously bragging about that?”

“Of course I am!”

“Who else could endure a city like this?”

Cynthia continued, caught somewhere between pride and sorrow.

“Who besides me could withstand this city...?”

“All this Madness...”

“Sanity loss...”

“Sacrifice...”

“It was all me—”

Jooheon gave a small laugh.

“Madness 80?”

“?”

Then the entire city shook.

BOOM!

A Dionysus symbol appeared in the sky.

Dark-red energy surged from the city center.

[Seo Jooheon: Madness 99.]

[City Management Compatibility: Maximum.]

[Qualified entity detected.]

[Authority transfer target automatically changed.]

Cynthia’s expression was priceless.

“...Huh?”

Jooheon let out a short laugh.

“Looks like I’m the only one qualified.”

The city system announced its judgment without emotion.

[Majesty Authority transfer complete: Cynthia → Seo Jooheon.]

[Highest Madness compatibility confirmed.]

[‘City of Dionysus’ has registered a new owner.]

The city’s neon lights slowly shifted.

Black.

Gold.

The entire city trembled as its rules were rewritten.

[Authority transfer complete.]

[The owner of this worldline is now ‘Seo Jooheon.’]

Cynthia stared in disbelief.

“...That makes no sense!!”

Jooheon remained expressionless.

“Good.”

“Then I can summon now.”

Cynthia collapsed and clutched her head with both hands.

“My city...”

“My work...”

“Everything I did...”

“Gone in an instant!”

“Why is this so unfair?!”

Jooheon looked down over the city and shrugged.

“The city recognizes a good owner.”

The instant he finished speaking—

Rulebook’s face appeared in the sky.

[AAAAAH!!]

[W-WHAT IS THIS?!]

[How did an authority transfer happen like this?!]

[There is no precedent for this kind of loophole!!]

Jooheon frowned.

“...Why are you freaking out?”

Rulebook continued without taking a breath.

[Yes, the rule technically allows ownership transfer when the city’s Madness requirement is met, but!!]

[This is not how that rule was meant to be used!]

[Lord Betrayne and Lady Delaira would be extremely disappointed if they saw this!]

Jooheon snorted.

“You’re making it really obvious whose side you’re on.”

Rulebook bristled.

[I am an impartial system!]

[This situation is simply far too unsportsmanlike!]

“Impartial?”

Jooheon’s lips lifted slightly.

“You just called her ‘Lady Delaira,’ didn’t you?”

[Th-That was...]

[Courtesy!]

[Basic courtesy!]

“Courtesy, my ass.”

“You’re just biased.”

Rulebook glared.

[This kind of authority transfer is extremely inappropriate!]

[Rulebook Operating Principle No. 3: ‘Avoid exploiting the system!’]

[You are practically the definition of exploitation right now!!]

Jooheon shrugged again.

“But I didn’t break any rules, right?”

[...No.]

[It is within the rules.]

“Then we’re done.”

Jooheon raised his hand.

“Summon Right.”

“Hades.”

Rulebook screamed.

[AAAAAH! PLEASE STOP!]

[THIS IS CLEARLY AN INVASION!]

Jooheon scoffed.

“Why is calling my own Artifact into my own city an invasion?”

He smiled.

“Or is this only a problem because it puts Delaira at a disadvantage?”

Rulebook shouted.

[That kind of accusation is inappropriate!]

[I am the honest mediator of the noble Majesty War!]

“I didn’t break the rules.”

Jooheon activated the Summon Right.

As his hand lowered—

The center of the plaza began turning black.

“Then shut up and summon it.”

Rulebook practically ground its teeth.

[...Summon Right activation accepted.]

[I did not want this outcome...]

Jooheon’s smile slowly widened.

[Summon Right activated.]

[Warning: Hades-type Artifacts are classified as high-risk.]

[Requires immense Dominance and stamina.]

[If the user’s mind wavers, the Artifact may drag the user into death as well.]

[Do you wish to proceed?]

Jooheon scoffed.

“You think that’s enough to scare me?”

He slammed his hand down again.

The circular design in the center of the plaza began to reverse.

The symbol of Dionysus twisted.

Changed.

BOOM!

It transformed into a symbol of the Underworld.

Then the ground split open.

Cynthia’s face went pale.

“Wait!”

“My city isn’t going to break, right?”

“Right?!”

But the fissure answered her by slowly opening wider.

Cold air rose from below.

Darkness followed.

The aura of death spread across the city like the breath of some enormous beast.

Then—

A sound came from the hole.

Clink.

Clank.

Chains dragging across stone.

Majesty Yoo Jaeha backed away with a look of disgust.

“...Ah.”

“That sound...”

“That’s the sound of something that really shouldn’t be coming out.”

Crk.

Crk.

A shadow crawled upward.

No.

The shadow took shape like twisting vines and began rising from the abyss.

(To be continued.)
