Chapter 50

Chapter 50. Fortune and Misfortune (1)

Jooheon was startled.

There was definitely a corpse in front of him.

Why the hell is there a random corpse here?

Then—

[Identity synchronization complete.]

[Current identity: Shin Yijun.]

[Residence type: Goshiwon.]

“...Shin Yijun?”

Jooheon instinctively looked back at the corpse.

Shin Yijun.

Was that this man’s name?

Then a familiar voice came from behind him.

“What, this one killed himself?”

“!”

The door opened.

A familiar face appeared.

Majesty Yoo Jaeha.

Jaeha pointed at the dead man.

“Why are you so surprised?”

“That guy is your identity.”

Silence.

Jooheon immediately understood.

So this key steals someone else’s identity.

That was how it made the user appear to be a citizen of the world they entered.

At the same time, Jooheon picked up a sheet of paper from the floor.

A suicide note.

The handwriting was calm, written in ballpoint pen.

[I can’t do this anymore. No matter what I try, nothing works. I don’t want to go to Murphy’s City. Anywhere but there.]

Jooheon’s eyebrow twitched slightly.

“...Murphy’s City?”

“Oh, that?”

Majesty Jaeha answered as though he knew all about it.

“This is the World of Fortune.”

“Murphy’s City, on the other hand, is a lower-class district where people whose luck has run out are forcibly relocated.”

“Basically an experimental city where only the unluckiest bastards get dumped.”

“Apparently, once you’re sent there, getting struck by lightning under a clear sky and dying is considered normal.”

Jooheon crumpled the suicide note with a cold smile.

Well.

Betrayne had probably designed that city too.

“An experimental city.”

“That bastard Betrayne really has disgusting hobbies.”

Getting a usable identity was good.

But if this identity belonged to someone on the verge of being sent to Murphy’s City...

[Remaining Fortune: 0.]

[Luck Points: 0.]

As expected.

Majesty Jaeha rested a hand against his chin and chuckled.

“That’s troublesome.”

“With zero luck, everything goes wrong.”

“You pick up a wallet and get accused of theft.”

“You obey every rule and somehow still end up in an accident.”

“Ten times out of ten, only the worst possible option remains.”

Jaeha looked down at the corpse.

“And you just stole the identity of a person like that.”

Jooheon frowned.

“What?”

“I thought using this key got me VIP treatment.”

Though admittedly, merely avoiding the intruder radar had already been a huge benefit.

Jaeha replied:

“Probably Rulebook.”

“It may have sucked up to another Majesty and twisted your causality with a misfortune-type Artifact.”

Sure enough—

[You are afflicted with Permanent Misfortune.]

[Curse caused by a Misfortune Artifact.]

That fucking Rulebook.

Jaeha shrugged.

“It just means they don’t intend to let you survive easily.”

Jooheon stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re talking like this has nothing to do with you.”

“You shouldn’t be much better off than me.”

Jaeha lightly tapped his own chest.

“There’s a world of difference between you and me.”

“The identity I extorted belonged to the owner of this goshiwon.”

“Looks like she was murdered, but she had money.”

Jooheon’s eyes lit up.

“Oh.”

“Lend me some.”

“You seriously think I will?”

Majesty Jaeha laughed.

It was the smile of someone with Majesty pride.

And the expression of a man saying, I’m not like you.

“This woman’s Fortune is excellent too.”

“So I’m going to make some money in this City of Fortune.”

“I’ll earn enough to cover your share too.”

Cup-Ramen Jaeha sounded worried.

[Captain, are you going to be okay?]

[At this point, you’re basically the Man of Misfortune.]

I survived next to the Bankruptcy Queen.

How unlucky could this really be?

Jooheon headed for the door.

Then—

Pop!

“...Huh?”

The doorknob came off in his hand.

Jaeha stared at it blankly.

“...That came off?”

That wasn’t all.

ZZZT! ZZZZT!

Sparks suddenly burst from the ceiling.

The fluorescent light blinked once.

Twice.

Then—

POP!

CRASH!

It fell to the floor, scattering sparks.

Cup-Ramen Jaeha screamed on instinct.

[Captain! Your head! Your head!]

“!”

Sparks landed in Jooheon’s hair.

At the same time, an electrical wire at his feet crackled and exploded.

The smell of burning quickly filled the tiny room.

Majesty Jaeha watched it all and snorted.

“...You’re insanely unlucky now.”

There was no worry in his voice.

No tension.

It was funny because it was happening to someone else.

Sure enough, Jaeha spun around.

“I’m not taking an unlucky bastard like you with me.”

“Stay here quietly this turn.”

“At least you won’t be able to cause a scene at the casino.”

Apparently, he was already sick of dealing with Jooheon.

Jaeha casually opened the door.

“Watch the house~”

Jooheon frowned and raised one hand.

Maybe Hand of Redefinition can do something about this...

Then his lips slowly curved upward.

“Ha.”

A short, wicked laugh.

“No.”

“There’s a better way.”

Then—

[Authority activated.]

[...Captain?]

The atmosphere changed.

Jooheon tossed the broken doorknob in his hand.

Clang!

As if that sound were a signal—

“Huh?”

Majesty Jaeha, who had been walking away, slipped on the floor.

“Wait—!”

BANG!!

“AAAGH!”

Jaeha lay sprawled on the floor for a moment, speechless.

“...What?”

Something was wrong.

Why the hell did I fall on perfectly normal flooring?!

And that wasn’t all.

“OW!”

Someone in another room smashed their fingers in the doorframe while closing the door.

Then—

CRASH!

Cups and plates fell to the floor in the neighboring room.

BANG! CLATTER!

The entire goshiwon erupted in screams.

“AAAAH!”

This time, someone tumbled down the stairs.

Then the fluorescent lights throughout the ceiling suddenly burst.

POP! POP! POP!

And in the middle of all that...

The automatic sprinklers activated for no reason.

“AAAAH!”

Cold water poured down.

The floor instantly became slippery.

“Why did the sprinklers suddenly go off?!”

“There isn’t even a fire!”

Before they could finish—

The electrical wires started sparking through the pooled water.

ZZZT!

“AAAAARGH!”

The screaming didn’t stop even during the blackout.

Then a window suddenly shattered.

A shard of glass buried itself into the wall right beside Jaeha’s face.

THUNK!

Jaeha sucked in a breath.

Finally, he sat down and shouted:

“You! What the hell did you do?!”

Jooheon laughed loudly.

What did he do?

[Majesty Authority: Spam (SPAM) Transmission]

  • Forcibly delivers an unavoidable amount of power into a target regardless of consent.

  • Cannot be blocked.

  • Cannot unsubscribe.

Jooheon had decided to make use of the <Permanent Misfortune> afflicting him.

By using his Spam Authority.

[Authority operation method altered.]

[Wide-Area Transmission (SPAM).]

“From now on, I’m not just an unlucky bastard.”

Jooheon grinned.

“I’m the bastard who spreads disasters.”

“What?!”

Jooheon began walking down the goshiwon hallway.

Everything around him descended into chaos.

Lights burst everywhere he passed.

Cracks spread along the walls.

What the hell is that?

He’s basically walking nuclear waste...!

He was forcibly delivering the lightning meant for himself to everyone around him.

A truly vicious method.

Majesty Jaeha finally understood and recoiled.

“Hey, tone it down—AAARGH!”

Ignoring Jaeha’s scream, Jooheon toyed with his Majesty Ring.

And when I don’t need it, I can just turn off the transmission.

“Don’t worry.”

“If my luck is at rock bottom...”

“I’ll just steal everyone else’s luck until the average balances out.”

Wearing Rulebook’s curse like a medal, Jooheon walked out of the goshiwon.

And thus...

The most vicious ‘uninvited guest’ in history set foot in the Queen of Fortune’s city.

Jooheon leisurely walked down a dazzling casino street.

“As expected.”

“Good gear really does put you ahead from the start.”

Majesty Jaeha stared at him.

Good gear?

Ahead from the start?

He was speechless.

But this was a city of gambling.

Even crossing a single street, the stakes changed three times.

At one table, people gambled with their lifespan.

Inside glass capsules, life lines flickered like the hands of a clock.

The instant one participant lost...

Their hair turned white in moments as they screamed.

At another table, memories were stacked like chips.

“One patent’s worth of knowledge.”

“Two combat experiences.”

The cards flipped.

The winner’s eyes flashed as knowledge was stolen directly from the loser.

But what truly caught Jooheon’s attention lay beyond that.

Not an Artifact auction house.

An Artifact gambling hall.

The items on display were actual Artifacts currently in use.

“Next round.”

“Upon defeat, ownership of the <Sun Artifact> transfers to the winner.”

At the dealer’s announcement, a golden shield landed on the table.

“That’s at least B-Grade.”

“No, if the core’s intact, it’s A-Grade.”

People swallowed hard.

Artifacts were piled up like chips.

Rings.

Swords.

Hearts.

Contracts.

Every time a loser had an Artifact taken away, the atmosphere around the table changed.

And watching all of this...

Someone looked ready to explode with happiness.

“Wow.”

Jooheon slowly inhaled.

The smell of the city filled his lungs.

Sweat.

Desire.

And the atmosphere right before something was stolen.

“This place is amazing.”

“You can openly get Artifacts like this?”

“Perfect opportunity for some barter.”

A low voice came from behind him.

“Don’t even think about touching those.”

“This isn’t a city ruled by some ordinary Majesty.”

“I know.”

“You already told me.”

“The Queen of Fortune or whatever lives here, right?”

“Haah.”

Majesty Jaeha, now wrapped in bandages thanks to Jooheon’s misfortune, sighed.

“I told you.”

“The owner of this city is one of the Twelve Executors.”

Jooheon’s eyebrow rose slightly.

“Right.”

“The lackeys of the highest Artifacts of the Four Great Civilizations.”

Jaeha nodded.

“Exactly.”

“This entire place is structured so its Majesty profits no matter what.”

“So unless you want them to strip your soul clean, stay quiet and—”

Jaeha suddenly stopped.

“What?”

Then his face changed.

“Where the hell did that bastard go?!”

Jooheon was already gone.

Majesty Jaeha immediately became uneasy.

Normally, maybe it wouldn’t matter.

But right now—

Where the hell did that bastard go with all that bad luck?!

(To be continued.)
