Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Perhaps it was because his voice had sounded like something no human being should have been capable of producing.

It had been the voice of a monster.

A monster consumed by madness that had been building inside him for years.

When did it all begin...?

As the memory of his voice grew clearer, even Riena's eyelids began to tremble.

No, was he always like that? Or did he become a monster along the way?

Had the label that had followed him relentlessly, almost as though it were trying to kill him, finally destroyed the person he once was and given birth to a monster in his place?

The illegitimate son of a ducal family.

Duke Cartes had practically encouraged the scandal surrounding Kanter, his only son and heir, by doing absolutely nothing to stop it.

And that was hardly the worst of it.

"It was that day. The day my father beat my nanny, who had been like a mother to me, to death."

"My goodness...."

"It was my fault. Because I was such a worthless son.... I suppose he wanted to kill me, even if he had to starve me to death."

Because Riena had lost her sight, she hadn't been able to see his expression when he told her those things.

But she hadn't needed her eyes to understand.

There had been countless scars hidden beneath his uniform.

And then there were those occasional bitter laughs he let out with such empty eyes.

"It was a day when the snow was falling heavily. That day, I was born again. I really did come back from the brink of death, after all."

Had that been when everything started?

Was that when you began nurturing the monster inside you, Kanter?

The memory of his faint smile surfaced in her mind, and Riena squeezed her eyes shut.

Her chest ached.

"...Please help me prepare for the banquet. I'd like to attend early this year."

The lavishly decorated banquet hall glittered so brilliantly that it almost hurt to look at it.

Tributes sent by neighboring kingdoms on the same continent added to the splendor of the celebration.

And standing in the middle of it all was Riena, who had arrived earlier than usual.

"How adorable...!"

"Your Highness! You're truly the angel of the Empire!"

Her ivory-colored hair flowed gracefully down to her waist, while her golden princess dress gave her an air of elegance.

Everyone who crossed her path seemed eager to approach her and exchange a few words.

"Your Highness, you look absolutely beautiful today!"

"Thank you! You look wonderful today, too, my lord."

Her answer was so adorable that the nobleman staggered, clutching his chest.

And he wasn't the only one.

With reactions like that, it was only natural that more and more nobles began gathering around Riena.

"I would love to capture Your Highness's elegance in a painting. How can someone so young possess such remarkable grace?"

"Even if we searched every country on the continent, we wouldn't find anyone as adorable as our princess."

"Your Highness, please look this way!"

As the compliments came pouring in, Riena even struck a few adorable poses, effortlessly capturing everyone's attention.

The people watching her either clutched their chests or covered their mouths as they burst into laughter.

Her cuteness was simply too much for their hearts to handle.

"I hope we all get along for the rest of the year, too! Well, I'll be going now."

Taking advantage of a brief opening, Riena quickly brought the conversation to an end.

She had just spotted Trinia entering the banquet hall.

"Oh my, Lady Trinia looks beautiful today, too!"

Trinia wore a dress made from pure white fabric adorned with blue gemstones.

Its gently swaying skirts made her look even more attractive.

Beside her was a moderately luxurious baby carriage.

Trinia really is a woman who knows exactly how much is enough.

Concealing a bitter smile, Riena approached her with a few quick steps.

"Greetings, Your Highness!"

"Hello! Is the baby sleeping?"

"Would you like to see him?"

Without even waiting for an answer, Trinia lifted the prince from his carriage and lovingly cradled him in her arms, making sure everyone could see him.

Countless eyes immediately turned toward them.

This was the first time the son of the Emperor's mistress had appeared at an official gathering, so it was only natural that he would attract attention.

However, a strangely uncomfortable silence settled over the hall.

The lively banquet hall suddenly seemed to have been covered by a thin layer of ice.

Trinia's gaze began to waver uneasily.

"S-shouldn't someone stop this?"

"Lower your voice."

A servant standing nearby whispered something into her ear, but Trinia simply pressed her lips together.

"Wow! He's so tiny! He's still just a little baby, isn't he? Hello, baby!"

Trinia wanted nothing more than to drive away the princess, who was making such a fuss without seeming to notice the atmosphere.

But with so many people watching, there was no way she could do that.

Just then, Countess Sertua turned toward Trinia.

"Lady Trinia, this is not a pattern that just anyone is permitted to use."

"Pardon? Ah... is that so? I wasn't aware of that."

"This pattern is reserved exclusively for direct members of the Imperial Family. Please be more careful."

At Countess Sertua's firm warning, Trinia bit her lower lip with an innocent, wounded expression.

The two baby blankets the Imperial Princess had given her were identical in every respect except for their embroidery.

That single difference determined whether the child using the blanket was officially recognized as a direct member of the Imperial Family.

It was no trivial matter.

But Trinia saw things differently.

The prince has the Emperor's blood running through his veins anyway! Those damned hyenas. Just wait until I get my hands on them.

Keeping a perfectly natural smile on her face, she spoke calmly.

"I simply didn't know. I only thought that because Her Highness the Imperial Princess had given me...."

Before Countess Sertua could respond, the nobles standing nearby immediately spoke up.

"That's rather unpleasant to hear. Why are you bringing Her Highness into this?"

"Her Highness is only six years old, yet you're trying to shift the blame onto her?"

"And here I thought you were such a humble woman...."

For a brief moment, anger flashed across Trinia's face.

Countess Sertua's expression also turned cold.

"Lady Trinia, where have you put the baby blanket Her Highness presented to you?"

At the countess's question, Trinia tilted her head and answered as though she were the one being wronged.

"This is the very blanket Her Highness gave me!"

The ladies-in-waiting who had been watching the exchange let out derisive snorts.

"What are you talking about? We all know exactly what the blanket Her Highness gave you looks like."

"That's right. Besides, Her Highness never even mentioned the Imperial Family's crest."

"We helped choose everything, from the fabric to the embroidery. I have no idea what you're talking about."

As the accusations came pouring out one after another, Trinia could no longer hide her bewilderment.

"There's no possible way I could fail to recognize a blanket I embroidered with my own hands. I distinctly remember using the same kind of fabric and embroidering nothing but a laurel pattern around it."

Countess Sertua continued speaking urgently, without giving Trinia a chance to interrupt.

"Where, exactly, have you put the blanket Her Highness presented to you?"

"Perhaps she didn't use it and simply tossed it onto some old shelf?"

"She probably wanted the Imperial Family's crest for herself."

As the nobles began adding their own remarks, the Empress, who had been watching from a distance, rose from her seat.

"What is all this commotion about?"

"Your Majesty...!"

As though she had been waiting for this very moment, Trinia hurried toward the Empress and bowed her head.

"I-I truly didn't know! Besides, my only offense was using the gift Her Highness so graciously presented to me because I treasured it...!"

"Enough!"

The Emperor's voice rang sharply throughout the banquet hall.

"Why are you making such an enormous fuss over a mere baby blanket?!"

However, despite the Emperor's furious shout, the nobles' faces remained filled with displeasure.

"Your Majesty, matters of Imperial etiquette must be treated with the utmost seriousness!"

"Exactly. Even if she truly didn't know, this isn't something that can simply be overlooked."

The Emperor's gaze shifted toward Trinia.

Seeing her trembling with her head lowered, he appeared to feel sorry for her.

However...

Those wretched bastards!

Trinia was grinding her teeth, desperately swallowing the curses that rose in her throat as she listened to the nobles' protests.

"Imperial Princess, speak for yourself. Is that really the blanket you presented to her?"

The Emperor's voice broke the silence.

Riena gathered the skirts of her dress and slowly made her way toward the center of the banquet hall.

Every pair of eyes turned toward Riena and Trinia.

"I... humbly report to His... Imperial Majesty...."

The nobles sighed and shook their heads as they watched the princess shrink into herself.

Matching their expressions of concern, Riena deliberately made her hands tremble, causing her dress to quiver slightly.

At the sight, the nobles pressed their hands against their foreheads and glared fiercely at Trinia.

"Will you hurry up and speak?"

The Empress's commanding shout cut through the banquet hall.

It was such a powerful outburst that even the nobles flinched, instinctively clutching their chests in alarm.

"Hic... Hic!"

Taking advantage of the moment, Riena collapsed onto the floor and burst into loud, childish sobs.

Just like a six-year-old!

Trinia could only stare at Riena in stunned disbelief, unable to hide her confusion.

"Tsk! How could anyone make Her Highness cry on such a wonderful day?"

"At this rate, Her Highness will be too frightened to present Lady Trinia with any gifts at all!"

"What on earth has Her Highness done wrong...?"

"Can you believe this? That woman is quite the fox! She's certainly no ordinary person!"

Refusing to be outdone, Trinia hurriedly brought tears to her own eyes and spoke.

"Y-Your Majesty! Her Highness the Imperial Princess has done nothing wrong."

"Then are you saying that you are the one at fault, Lady Trinia?"

"T-there has been a misunderstanding. Her Highness gave me two baby blankets!"

"Two blankets? Was the other blanket the same as this one?"

Trinia slowly nodded.

At that, Countess Sertua stepped forward and bowed.

"Your Majesty, the blanket I made did not bear the Imperial Family's crest. And I most certainly made only one!"

The Emperor, who had been silently observing the exchange, finally spoke in a low voice.

"In that case, the blanket the Imperial Princess presented to her must be somewhere. Go and find it."

As soon as the order was given, the attendants hurried out of the banquet hall.

"Lady Trinia, you should admit what you've done and apologize to Her Highness while you still have the chance."

Countess Sertua's voice was remarkably sharp.

Looking at the baby blanket the attendants had brought back, the Emperor spoke calmly.

"Countess Sertua, examine the blanket."

Breaking the silence that had settled over the banquet hall like a bucket of cold water, the countess made her way toward the raised platform.

She unfolded the neatly folded blanket.

After examining it, she answered with determination in her eyes.

"This is indeed the blanket I made."

As soon as she finished speaking, the Empress's attendant standing beside her unfolded the blanket and displayed it to the gathered nobles.

Trinia's face turned deathly pale, and she began waving her hands frantically.

"N-no! That's not true! Her Highness gave me two baby blankets! I swear it's true!"

Finally, the Empress turned toward Riena.

"Imperial Princess, did you present Lady Trinia with two baby blankets?"
