Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Day 9.

Agility reached 100.

Vitality reached 19.

But Hyeon-jun couldn’t hunt.

Delayed muscle pain hit him, forcing him to spend the entire day lying down.

Day 10.

Vitality reached 29.

He hunted eight Rune Rabbits.

He also sold his Agility Rune.

Rune sale price: 280,000 won.

Final payment: 196,000 won.

Day 11.

Vitality reached 39.

He hunted ten Rune Rabbits.

Final payment: 245,000 won.

Day 12.

Vitality reached 49.

“And now I’m sick again.”

Maybe it was because he had hunted two days in a row.

He had felt perfectly fine yesterday, but today the muscle pain returned.

“From now on, I should hunt one day and rest the next.”

Things might have been different if he had a party.

But hunting alone put a considerable strain on his body in many ways.

“Still, it’s not as bad as a few days ago.”

The day after his first hunt had been terrible.

He had genuinely been unable to move.

Other than going to the bathroom or eating, he had literally spent the entire day lying down.

“What a waste of time.”

His body was used to working every single day.

Even while suffering severe muscle pain, he couldn’t stop thinking about all the time he was wasting.

“I can’t spend today like that too. I should do something.”

Exercise was out.

That required using his body.

Studying theory?

He already knew so much that there wasn’t much more worth studying.

“Ah. Should I do that?”

Hyeon-jun sat down in front of his low table.

His hunting was gradually getting on track.

It was time to start planning how to reach E-rank.

“There are three requirements for becoming E-rank.”

Hyeon-jun wrote them down in a notebook.

1.

Raise the Soul Circuit to E-rank.

2.

3.

Complete the Hunter Academy beginner course.

4.

5.

Clear an F-rank Closed-Type Gate once.

6.

First was raising the grade of his Soul Circuit.

To increase his Soul Circuit grade, he needed to raise all five Major Stats to 100.

“That means I need a total of 500 Runes.”

In cash, that was worth over one hundred million won.

It wasn’t an impossible goal for ordinary Hunters, but it certainly wasn’t easy.

“That kind of money used to be completely beyond my reach.”

That had been true in the past.

Now, however, time alone would solve the problem.

“Agility 100. Vitality 49. The remaining Stats are all 10. I need 321 more Runes.”

Any Stat that stopped awkwardly at ninety-nine could be finished using the original Rune.

Thirty-two more days.

As long as he didn’t waste Copy on anything else, his Soul Circuit would reach E-rank on Day 32.

“That takes care of number one. Next, number two.”

He had to pass the promotion exam administered by the Hunter Academy.

The Hunter Academy was a government-certified educational institution that provided various forms of Hunter-related training.

It had originally been established to provide basic education regarding Awakeners and Other Spaces.

In practice, it was also a preventive measure designed to reduce pointless Hunter deaths.

That’s why anyone who wants to become a Hunter has to take basic classes and pass an exam.

Granted, the classes were online, so almost nobody actually paid attention to them.

Regardless, Hunters still had to pass the Academy’s promotion examination.

Its official name was the E-rank Hunter Qualification Examination.

As the name suggested, it tested whether someone possessed the qualifications needed to become an E-rank Hunter.

“I heard it isn’t that difficult.”

It wasn’t graded comparatively.

As long as someone exceeded a fixed passing score, they passed and could become E-rank.

“And it’s free.”

The second requirement didn’t seem particularly worrying.

The problem was the third one.

“Clear an F-rank Closed-Type Gate once.”

He absolutely didn’t want to enter a Closed-Type Gate.

However, if he wanted to raise his rank, there was no avoiding it.

“At least I only have to do it once.”

While worrying about it, Hyeon-jun also felt a strange excitement.

It was similar to what he had felt when he first dreamed of becoming a Hunter.

Unpredictable experiences inside unknown spaces.

Danger, in another sense, meant excitement and thrill.

Back when he had been an immature teenager, Hyeon-jun had dreamed of becoming a Hunter precisely because of that thrill.

He had only abandoned those feelings after tragedy struck and he gained people he had to protect.

“My situation hasn’t changed even now... but maybe I can afford to challenge myself a little.”

The past few days of hunting had given Hyeon-jun considerable confidence.

Even if dungeons were full of unpredictable situations, he felt he could handle an F-rank one.

“Of course, not right now.”

At the moment, only his Agility was high.

He needed to grow more.

“At minimum, my Soul Circuit should reach E-rank.”

Technically, if Strength, Agility, and Vitality all reached 100, it would probably be worth attempting.

But Hyeon-jun wanted something more certain.

More importantly, something safer.

“One mistake in there could kill me...”

Death.

The thought alone sent a chill through him.

But it wasn’t simply because he was afraid of dying.

There was something even more frightening.

The pressure the world would place on his younger sister if he died.

That was something he never wanted to leave behind for her.

“So I need to make it as safe as possible.”

Hyeon-jun added another section beneath the third requirement.

3-1. Safety goals.
3-1.1 Reach E-rank Soul Circuit.
3-1.2 Gain experience.

I still don’t have enough actual experience as a Hunter.

He had entered dungeons above F-rank several times before.

But only as a porter.

Even then, he had thought they were dangerous, so he hadn’t gone often.

And now that I’m actually hunting, the only monsters I’ve killed are Rune Rabbits.

There was no telling what kind of monsters would appear inside a dungeon.

He needed to personally fight as many different monster types as possible and gain real combat experience.

I know the theory extremely well, but actually fighting them is another matter.

Hyeon-jun added another line below.

-Once Vitality and Strength both reach 100, hunt in fields other than the Grassland Field.

It was a neat summary of his future plan.

“Ah. Once my Soul Circuit reaches E-rank, I should try party hunting too.”

Hunters weren’t allowed to enter dungeons alone.

It wasn’t a System restriction.

It was a legal restriction intended to reduce reckless Hunter deaths.

He thought it would be useful to learn how to hunt alongside other people before entering a dungeon for real.

“Good. This should be enough planning.”

Just as Hyeon-jun placed a period at the end of his notes...

Bzzz.

His smartphone vibrated.

Since quitting his jobs, it rarely rang anymore.

The screen showed the word:

[Younger Sister]

“What’s this about?”

She usually contacted him through messenger apps.

She almost never called.

And right now, she should have been at school.

“It’s not even vacation yet.”

Curious, Hyeon-jun answered.

“Hey, Hyeon-a.”

-Oppa, can you talk right now? You didn’t step away from work because of me, did you?

He still hadn’t told his younger sister that he had started Hunter work again.

He knew she would worry, so he had been waiting for the right opportunity.

“If I couldn’t talk, I wouldn’t have answered. What’s wrong? Why are you calling?”

-They’re kicking me out of the dorm.

“What? Why?”

The words struck like a bolt from the blue.

Why would they suddenly kick her out of the dormitory?

-They’re renovating the entire dorm.

“...Hey. You’re supposed to say that part first. I thought you were actually getting expelled.”

-Hehehe. That was the reaction I was hoping for.

“When are you coming home? Today?”

-No. Construction starts a few days after vacation begins, so I’ll probably come home in a little over two weeks.

Hyeon-jun looked around his apartment.

Two people could technically lie down inside.

But it certainly wasn’t large enough for two people to comfortably live together.

“Will you be okay? It’s a basement apartment. It’ll be uncomfortable.”

-Of course I’ll be okay. It’s not like that place is a garbage dump.

“I’m worried you won’t be able to study properly.”

-I can just go somewhere else to study. It’s fine.

“Somewhere else?”

The neighborhood where he lived had a lot of hills.

His basement apartment sat near the top of the highest one.

To reach the subway, he had to walk ten minutes to the village bus stop, take the bus down the hill, then continue from there.

Transportation was terrible.

“You haven’t forgotten where the house is, right?”

-Of course not! That distance is basically exercise. Don’t worry about it.

“Hmm...”

-Ah, Oppa, I need to go. Class is about to start.

“All right. See you in a week.”

Hyeon-jun ended the call.

He stared at the darkened screen for a while.

Then he opened his banking app and checked his balance.

Technically, he had enough money to rent a two-bedroom apartment.

But most of that money was already reserved for expenses.

“Considering what I’ve been earning since starting Hunter work, I could probably refill the account pretty quickly.”

His thoughts deepened.

Until now, his younger sister had remained in the dormitory even during school vacations.

Next year, she would begin serious preparation for her entrance exams.

He wanted her to spend this winter break comfortably at home.

“All right. I can stretch myself a little.”

After thinking it over, Hyeon-jun made his decision.

He would leave the basement apartment he had lived in for years.

And move somewhere new.

There was almost no gap between decision and action.

Hyeon-jun immediately visited a real estate agency.

After hearing his rough requirements, the realtor introduced him to a place.

“This apartment matches exactly what you described.”

Two rooms.

Good heating.

Windows.

Plenty of sunlight.

And it even came with appliances and furniture such as a refrigerator, washing machine, and bed.

“I’ll take it.”

Hyeon-jun quickly signed the contract and moved out of his basement apartment.

When the landlord heard he was leaving, he congratulated him and said he was glad Hyeon-jun was finally moving somewhere better.

“I guess most people don’t live there as long as I did.”

According to the landlord, before Hyeon-jun moved in, tenants had changed every few months.

That alone showed how difficult the place was to live in.

“I thought it was pretty livable.”

Hyeon-jun began packing.

It took exactly thirty minutes.

Despite having lived there for years, all of his belongings fit inside a single box.

“Once I throw away the junk, there’s almost nothing left.”

The only bulky things were the low table and mattress.

He had picked both up from the street, so he attached disposal stickers and threw them away.

His blanket was old enough that he simply discarded that too.

“Take care, basement apartment. We’ve been through a lot together.”

Hyeon-jun moved into his new home.

With only one box of belongings, calling it a move almost felt ridiculous.

“Now this is a home.”

The wallpaper was clean enough to look freshly installed.

Compared to his basement apartment, where mold had been visible everywhere he looked, this was on another level.

“It even has LED lights.”

In the basement, he had used an ancient incandescent bulb.

Sometimes when he switched it on, the entire room looked yellow.

“So this is what spending money feels like.”

Hyeon-jun threw himself onto the bed that came with the apartment.

It was incomparably softer than the mattress he had picked up from the street.

His eyes almost closed immediately.

“No, no. I need to finish everything today.”

Since the muscle pain had forced him to take a day off anyway, he decided to use the time to fill the house with missing necessities and furniture.

“I’ll buy what needs to be bought and get whatever I can through Carrot Market.”

Hyeon-jun repeatedly went in and out of the house.

Thanks to his constant movement, the once-empty apartment gradually began looking like a proper home.

A television.

An office PC and monitor.

A microwave.

A chest of drawers.

And more.

“Whew.”

Despite the winter weather, Hyeon-jun wiped sweat from his forehead.

“Now I finally feel like I’m living like a human being.”

After taking a hot shower for the first time in ages, Hyeon-jun sat in the living room.

Wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts in the middle of winter felt strangely unfamiliar.

“I used to wear a padded jacket and extra pants indoors just to save heating costs.”

Feeling indulgent, Hyeon-jun even ordered fried chicken and sat in front of the TV.

It was both a reward for finishing his move in a single day...

And a farewell to the version of himself who had panicked over every tiny expense.

“I’m happy.”

Eating fried chicken while watching television.

Truthfully, there had been a time when he thought he would never experience a day like this again.

Yet his life had changed as if by a miracle.

“I guess life really doesn’t only give you reasons to die.”

Of course, nothing had dramatically changed in practical terms yet.

His mother was still lying in the hospital.

The debt still remained.

But there was enormous meaning in the fact that his hope finally had a foundation.

Hope without evidence had always been fragile.

Now, that hope had gained real strength.
